Scaled Elastic Hydrogel Interfaces for Brain Electrophysiology

Mengdi Hu,Jing Ren,Yue Pan,Liping Cheng,Xin Xu,Chee Leong Tan,Huabin Sun,Yi Shi,Shancheng Yan

The advancement in brain–computer interface technology has facilitated real-time communication between the brain and external devices, rapidly expanding invasive brain–computer interfaces. Nevertheless, little progress has been made in improving the one-way, noninvasive brain–computer interface technology using conductive methods, necessitating enhancements to the current paste contact electrodes. In this paper, a captivating spherical electrode is fabricated that exhibits noncytotoxic properties, combining alginate hydrogel with indium tin oxide conductor components. The electrode's remarkable and consistent electrical conductivity enables it to generate stable adaptive deformations that conform to diverse scalp topographies. Most impedance values fall below 10 kΩ, indicating heightened hydrophilicity compared to traditional conductive pastes, as evidenced by contact angle measurements. An empirical electroencephalography data collection study confirms its conductivity and signal transmission reliability. The acquired electroencephalography signals are utilized for emotion recognition utilizing band energy ratio analysis and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms. The operation of this system is both straightforward and convenient, requiring minimal preparation before and after the collection of electroencephalography signals. Utilizing an extensive range of raw materials and straightforward preparatory procedures enhances the potential industrial application of hydrogel electrodes, thereby significantly contributing to advancing civilian electroencephalography equipment and investigating depression-related pathologies.

Fabrication and application of flexible EEG dry electrode based on stacked-template method

Dan Luo,Xin Niu,Hui Li,Lingzhu Wang,Li Chen,Hao Liu

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a generally adopted method to monitor a person's brain activity. Traditional EEG recording usually uses wet electrodes with lower contact impedance due to conductive gels. Nonetheless, the conductive gel needs pretreated skin, which leads to allergies by long-term use. In this paper, a kind of barb micro-structured (BMS) dry electrode is presented. The coating, electrical, and electrochemical properties of the electrode are studied in detail. The EEG signals of calm and blinking eyes can be collected by placing the BMS dry electrode on the forehead of the human body. Compared to the traditional wet and planar dry electrodes, BMS dry electrodes do not need pretreated skin before use, and they have a stronger anti-hair interference performance. They also record high-quality EEG signals. Further, a mercaptan treatment is used on the surface of the electrode, which effectively improves its corrosion resistance rate (corrosion resistance rate of 26.78%), which is conducive to the long-term use of the electrode, and forms a research basis for the development of the intelligent wearable field.

A tough semi-dry hydrogel electrode with anti-bacterial properties for long-term repeatable non-invasive EEG acquisition

Wang Dongyang,Xue Hailing,Xia Long,Li Zongqi,Zhao Yubo,Fan Xinan,Sun Kai,Wang Huanan,Hamalainen Timo,Zhang Chi,Cong Fengyu,Li Yanhua,Song Fei,Lin Jiaqi

Non-invasive brain–computer interfaces (NI-BCIs) have garnered significant attention due to their safety and wide range of applications. However, developing non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes that are highly sensitive, comfortable to wear, and reusable has been challenging due to the limitations of conventional electrodes. Here, we introduce a simple method for fabricating semi-dry hydrogel EEG electrodes with antibacterial properties, enabling long-term, repeatable acquisition of EEG. By utilizing N-acryloyl glycinamide and hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan, we have prepared electrodes that not only possess good mechanical properties (compression modulus 65 kPa) and anti-fatigue properties but also exhibit superior antibacterial properties. These electrodes effectively inhibit the growth of both Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. epidermidis ) bacteria. Furthermore, the hydrogel maintains stable water retention properties, resulting in an average contact impedance of <400 Ω measured over 12 h, and an ionic conductivity of 0.39 mS cm −1 . Cytotoxicity and skin irritation tests have confirmed the high biocompatibility of the hydrogel electrodes. In an N170 event-related potential (ERP) test on human volunteers, we successfully captured the expected ERP signal waveform and a high signal-to-noise ratio (20.02 dB), comparable to that of conventional wet electrodes. Moreover, contact impedance on the scalps remained below 100 kΩ for 12 h, while wet electrodes became unable to detect signals after 7–8 h due to dehydration. In summary, our hydrogel electrodes are capable of detecting ERPs over extended periods in an easy-to-use manner with antibacterial properties. This reduces the risk of bacterial infection associated with prolonged reuse and expands the potential of NI-BCIs in daily life.

Hierarchical hybrid crosslinking multifunctional gelatin-based hydrogel: ideal platforms for flexible wearable devices, brain–computer interfaces and biomedical applications

Chang Xu,Shiqiang Guan,Hao Zhang,Weiwang Fan,Xijing Zhuang,Xufeng Dong

Hydrogels are promising candidates for flexible wearable technology, biomedicine, and even brain–computer interfaces (BCI). However, the mismatch in the mechanical properties and high biotoxicity of the materials cast a shadow on their application prospects. Herein, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel matrix primarily based on the natural polymer gelatin. Multilevel hybrid dynamic crosslinking (MHC) enables the adjustment of the hydrogel molecular network and endows the material with satisfactory mechanical properties and self-healing behavior. The excellent biocompatibility of the hydrogel is enough to support the growth and proliferation of cells while avoiding tissue rejection or inflammation. Moreover, the excellent self-adhesive performance allows the hydrogel to directly adhere to the surface of human skin and tissues, enabling real-time monitoring of body movements and non-invasive sensing of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Therefore, the multifunctional hydrogel matrix with self-adhesive behavior, self-healing properties, appropriate mechanical performance, and excellent biocompatibility can be regarded as a promising platform for applications in flexible wearable devices, biomedical materials, and BCI devices.
