Liquid metal (especially eutectic gallium indium, EGaIn) nanoparticle inks overcome the poor wettability of high surface tension EGaIn to elastomer substrates and show great potential in soft electronics. Normally, a sintering strategy is required to break the oxide shells of the EGaIn nanoparticles (EGaIn NPs) to achieve conductive paths. Herein, for the first time, thermal-sinterable EGaIn NP inks are prepared by introducing thermal expansion microspheres (TEMs) into EGaIn NP solution. Through the mechanical pressure induced by the expansion of the heated TEMs, the printed EGaIn NPs can be sintered into electrically conductive paths to achieve highly stretchable bioelectrode arrays, which exhibit giant electromechanical performance (up to 680% strain), good cyclic stability (over 2 × 10 4 cycles), and stable conductivity after high-speed rotation (6000 rpm). Simultaneously, the recording sites are hermetically sealed by ionic elastomer layers, ensuring the complete leakage-free property of EGaIn and reducing the electrochemical impedance of the electrodes (891.16 Ω at 1 kHz). The bioelectrode is successfully applied to monitor dynamic electromyographic signals. The sintering strategy overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional sintering strategies, such as leakage of EGaIn, reformation of large EGaIn droplets, and low throughput, which promotes the application of EGaIn in soft electronics.

Critical bone defects, exacerbated by infections, pose significant challenges to bone healing and homeostasis, necessitating the development of dual-functional biomimetics that combine anti-infective and reparative capabilities. The EGaIn holds promise across various disciplines, though its interactions with microbial cells require further elucidation. This investigation evaluates the antimicrobial efficacy of PEG-EGaIn nanocapsules against a spectrum of bacterial, employing electron microscopy. Constructs containing 1.5% PEG-EGaIn hinder biofilm-producing bacteria, while 3% concentrations amplify the biocidal effect. Furthermore, the nanocapsules promoted osteogenic differentiation rBMSCs, evidenced by enhanced mineralization and upregulation of key osteogenic genes. In addressing large bone defects, PEG-EGaIn-Col-Ap-lamellar and ethanolic-mediated Col-Ap-lamellar constructs serve as potential solutions for bone resorption mitigation and osteo-angiogenesis. Bone-remodeling were validated through μ-CT and histomorphometry confirming no evidence of chronic inflammation or fibrosis. In this study, PEG-EGaIn nanocapsules emerge as potent biocide and bone repair, underscoring their potential in combating antibiotic resistance and enhancing bone healing.

Ink-based screen-printed processes are a practical approach for scalable fabrication of wearable electronics with cost effectiveness and high throughput. However, a few challenges persist with respect to the electronic conductivity and ions diffusion rate of such devices. In this study, we investigated an EGaIn/Silk fibroin (SF) ink and a screen-printed strategy to fabricate graphene 3D array structure Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) based on high conductivity EGaIn collector. The EGaIn/SF ink, owing to the coordination and chelation between SF and EGaIn, shows excellent stability and can be used to fabricate conductive patterns on flexible substrates. Interestingly, these EGaIn patterns exhibit a novel conductivity recovery mechanism, including gravity deposition, evaporation induction, mechanical sintering, and EGaIn surface self-healing. Simultaneously, by adjusting screen meshes and accurately printing graphene ink, we obtained a graphene 3D array structure interdigital electrode on the EGaIn layer, which shows a large specific surface area and obviously multidirectional ion diffusion effect. As proofs, the resultant MSCs-100 delivered an outstanding areal (volume) capacitance of 35.72 mF cm −2 (10.26F cm −3 ) at a current density of 25 μA cm −2 , remarkable flexibility and cycling stability. Moreover, we have realized the cycling stability characterization of integrated equipment, which holds great potential for application in future flexible and wearable electronics.

Metal nanoparticles hold promising applications in photoacoustic transducers due to their unique plasmonic properties. However, current transducers using conventional noble metal nanoparticles exhibit relatively low photoacoustic conversion efficiency, primarily due to insufficient optical absorption for effective thermal or acoustic energy conversion. This paper proposes the use of nanoparticles derived from the liquid metal gallium-indium eutectic alloy (EGaIn), which demonstrate significantly higher absorption at 1064 nm compared to gold or silver nanoparticles, thereby enhancing photoacoustic conversion efficiency. To stabilize the liquid metal nanoparticles (LMNPs) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTMS) is employed as a surfactant during sonication in a solvent. Furthermore, embedding EGaIn nanoparticles in a cluster form enhances absorption through gap-induced plasmonic effects. Through optimization, a photoacoustic conversion efficiency of 5.1 × 10−3 is achieved, which is 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than those of transducers using conventional metal materials. This study highlights the potential of liquid metal nanoparticles with plasmonic effects in advancing the development of novel photoacoustic composite materials.

Developing multifunctional electronic fabrics with sensing capabilities, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and Joule heating performance holds great significance for health monitoring and medical protection. However, most fabrics struggle to combine multiple functions and optimize them simultaneously. For example, achieving both high sensitivity and a wide detection range in sensing devices remains a challenge. In this paper, we present a multidimensional composite structure comprising MXene Ti3C2Tx nano lamellar, self-assembled lotus leaf-like MXene/EGaIn and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) assembled on the surface of thermoplastic polyurethane to create a multifunctional MXene EGaIn/MXene CNT fabric (MEMC fabric). The multidimensional materials form a stable conductive network under tension. As a strain sensor, the MEMC fabric exhibits a large sensing range (0–360%) and ultra-high sensitivity (GF ∼ 114,700), making it suitable for artificial eardrum research. Additionally, MEMC demonstrates excellent EMI shielding effect (∼73 dB) and maintains good EMI shielding performance under tensile conditions. The fabric also showcases outstanding Joule heating performance (low voltage drive ∼2 V, fast heating time ∼13 s, and high heating stability ∼4000 s). This paper also demonstrates the multifunctional combination of MEMC fabrics, achieving simultaneous sensing, EMI shielding, and Joule heating functions under stretching. This work offers a forward-looking approach for constructing multifunctional composite fabrics, and the resulting MEMC composite materials hold potential applications in portable electronic devices and defense industries.

Conductive hydrogels with intrinsic flexibility, high sensitivity, antibacterial activity , and repeatability are used in wearable devices . The development of conductive hydrogels with simultaneously high conductivity, reliability, and controllable degradability remains a challenge. Therefore, conductive composite hydrogel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-stabilized eutectic gallium and indium (EGaIn)/polyacrylamide (PAAm)/polyacrylic acid (PAA)@FeCl 3 @polyprrole (PPy) (PVA-EGaIn-x@PAAm/PAA@FeCl 3 @PPy, where x represents EGaIn content) was employed to fabricate a multi-cross-linked network and interpenetrating hydrogel with high conductivity, mechanical properties , and controllable degradability. Ga 3+ /Fe 3+ –carboxyl group coordination bonds can act as a dynamic cross-linking network to promote controllable degradability. Meanwhile, EGaIn liquid metal and PPy, as electronic conductors, conferred the composite hydrogel with good conductivity. The effects of EGaIn liquid metal content on mechanical properties and conductivity were investigated in detail. A simple strain sensor fabricated by using PVA-EGaIn-5@PAAm/PAA@FeCl 3 @PPy achieved the detection of the current signal of human motions. The conductive composite hydrogel had good conductivity (8.1 S m −1 ), acceptable sensitivity (gauge factor of 0.28), and reliability (500 cycles at 200% strain). Furthermore, the prepared composite can be degraded in acid and base solutions for environmental preservation. This work provides a feasible method for the construction of multifunctional robust hydrogel strain sensors to facilitate the practical development of sensors for monitoring human motions.

Interface engineering, by modulating defect distribution and impedance at interfaces and inducing interfacial polarization, has proven to be an effective strategy for optimizing dielectric properties. However, the inherent incompatibility between heterogeneous phases presents a significant challenge in constructing multi-heterointerfaces and understanding how their distribution influences dielectric performance. Herein, we constructed an EGaIn@Ni/NiO/Ga2O3 composite structure by employing a low-intensity ultrasound-assisted galvanic replacement reaction followed by high-temperature annealing. The controlled addition of Ni salts allowed for the fine-tuning of Ni, NiO, and In concentrations and their spatial distribution within the interfacial architecture. Annealing treatment induced a transition from amorphous to crystalline phases, triggering dual relaxation behaviors between EGaIn/Ni and NiO/Ga2O3. Additionally, significant charge accumulation was observed at the NiO/Ga2O3 interface, likely due to the substantial work function difference between Ni and NiO, coupled with the low barrier height between EGaIn and Ni, which facilitates electron migration. Consequently, the optimized samples exhibited a maximum absorption bandwidth of 7.92 GHz, which is the highest among the EGaIn-based absorbers reported in the literature. This work not only elucidates the mechanism by which multi-heterogeneous interfacial distributions regulate the dielectric properties but also provides an effective approach for modulating the electromagnetic wave performance of liquid metals.

Fiber-based wearable electronics, distinguished by their remarkable flexibility and robust performance, have emerged as a focal point in healthcare and soft robotics. While significant strides have been made in advancing fiber-based wearable electronics, pursuing multifunctional integration, particularly in areas such as personal health monitoring continues to present significant challenges. In this work, we report the successful fabrication of ultra-elastic and multifunctional core-sheath EGaIn microfibers tailored for wearable motion detection and visual electrophysiologic monitoring. These highly conductive fibers are characterized by an intriguing core-sheath structure, achieved through the uniform coating of EGaIn liquid metal on wet-spun elastomeric microfibers, which are priorly magnetron sputtered with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for fast alloying with EGaIn. Prepared core-sheath EGaIn microfibers possess numerous micro-wrinkles on the surface via a simple pre-stretching treatment, thus demonstrating an exceptional sensitivity (GF = 108.3), a fast response time of 82 ms, and remarkable stability. Their superior electromechanical stability and sensitivity under various strain conditions enable reliable and real-time detection of human motion signals, electrooculography (EOG) signals, and visual evoked potentials (VEP). This research offers a novel approach to the multifunctional integration of high-performance fiber-based electronics.

Homocysteine (Hcy) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are critical biomarkers for numerous chronic diseases, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the most prevalent. The ability to simultaneously detect both biomarkers in point-of-care settings is in high demand for CVD early diagnosis and prevention. Herein, we prepared the eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) nanoparticles decorated with p-phenylenediamine (PPD) on the surface to facilitate the subsequent attachment of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to achieve EGaIn–PPD@Au, which was modified on the screen-printed electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs). Aptamers that are specific to Hcy and CRP were then immobilized on the EGaIn–PPD@Au surface to achieve the sensing interface on ePADs. The presence of EGaIn–PPD@Au significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity, leading to amplified electrochemical signals. This aptasensor demonstrated high specificity, capable of detecting Hcy in a range of 1–50 μM with a detection limit of 0.22 μM, and the detection range for CRP was 1–100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.039 ng/mL. The aptasensor also effectively detected Hcy and CRP in clinical saliva samples, yielding an area under the curve (AUC) of about 0.80 when the individual biomarker was considered and 0.93 when both biomarkers were taken into account. The positive correlation observed between salivary and blood concentrations of Hcy and CRP, coupled with their association with cardiovascular disease (CVD), suggested the potential of this methodology as a noninvasive point-of-care strategy for the early diagnosis of CVD.

Eutectic gallium–indium alloy (EGaIn) is a biocompatible liquid metal, promising for wearable electronics. Through functionalization and formation of composites, EGaIn-based materials have shown potential in multifunctional sensing devices. Here, egg-shell EGaIn/Ag/ZnO ternary composite particles were prepared through an ultrasound-assisted displacement reaction combined with room-temperature hydrolysis. The composite was further constructed as a wearable sensor capable of both pressure and proximity detection. For pressure sensing, due to the decrease in the Young’s modulus of the egg-shell structure and the presence of the electrical double layers between Ag and ZnO, which enriched surface charges, the sensor showed excellent sensitivity at low pressures (2.17 KPa–1, <0.4 KPa) and thus the ability to sense body movements. For proximity sensing, the composite sensor was able to detect approaching objects that were up to 20 cm away. By combining and fitting the sensing curves for both the touchless and touching modes, the extracted parameters were used to create fingerprints for different objects, demonstrating the great potential of our sensor in the differentiation and identification of unknown objects for future robotics and artificial intelligence.

Achieving materials with low solar reflectance and minimal thermal losses is crucial for efficient solar energy harvesting, but simultaneously attaining these properties is challenging. To address this, we introduce a novel approach by engineering EGaIn photothermal nanoparticles, featuring an EGaIn core as the photothermal layer, encapsulated within a precisely designed conjugated organic shell. The conjugated organic layer was synthesized through a combination of aminoundecanoic acid and tannic acid, utilizing Schiff base and Michael addition reactions. This combination effectively regulates the thickness of the oxide layer on the EGaIn surface, thereby preserving photothermal efficiency and enhancing the interaction between EGaIn and the polymer matrix. Our method involves a hole-making process that firmly adheres nanoparticles to porous material surfaces, creating a photothermal cavity structure. This design integrates photothermal material with an insulating architecture, enhancing solar energy absorption and reducing heat loss. In practical applications, the prepared porous membrane achieved a temperature increase of 15 °C above ambient conditions, generating an output voltage of 100 mV and an output current of 38.8 mA in photothermal power generation. By overcoming traditional limitations of solar energy materials, this research establishes a way for the design and application of materials that successfully balance high solar absorption with minimal thermal losses. The developed membrane could play a pivotal role in the next generation of sustainable and efficient solar energy harvesting technologies, paving the way for more reliable and scalable renewable energy solutions.

The development of high-performance biosensors is a key focus in the nanozyme field, but the current limitations in biocompatibility and recyclability hinder their broader applications. Herein, we address these challenges by constructing core–shell nanohybrids with biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification using a galvanic replacement reaction between orthovanadate ions and liquid metal (LM) (VOx@EGaIn-PEG). By leveraging the excellent charge transfer properties and the low band gap of the LM surface oxide, the VOx@EGaIn-PEG heterojunction can effectively convert hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals, demonstrating excellent peroxidase-like activity and stability (Km = 490 μM, vmax = 1.206 μM/s). The unique self-healing characteristics of LM further enable the recovery and regeneration of VOx@EGaIn-PEG nanozymes, thereby significantly reducing the cost of biological detection. Building upon this, we developed a nanozyme colorimetric sensor suitable for biological systems and integrated it with a smartphone to create an efficient quantitative detection platform. This platform allows for the convenient and sensitive detection of glucose in serum samples, exhibiting a good linear relationship in the range of 10–500 μM and a detection limit of 2.35 μM. The remarkable catalytic potential of LM, combined with its biocompatibility and regenerative properties, offers valuable insights for applications in catalysis and biomedical fields.
