Improving Dispersion and Mechanical Properties of Natural Rubber and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Composites With Ionic Liquid-Modified Helical Carbon Nanofiber

Fusen Wu,Peixiu Tian,Yongzhong Jin,Wenping Xu,Hangjia Yan,Jian Chen,Lin Pi,Meng Wang,Kaiyi Lin,Rui Xu,Ziyu Wang

This study presents an innovative “ionic liquid (IL) modification-spray compounding” technique to enhance the dispersibility of helical carbon nanofiber (HCNF) and fabricate IL-modified HCNF/silica composite fillers. These fillers were used to reinforce natural rubber/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (NR/EPDM) composites. Results show that the composite filler modified with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C 4 MIM]BF 4 ) achieved the most uniform dispersion in the rubber matrix. Compared with the pure silica sample, the composite material exhibited improvements in shore hardness, stress at 300% strain, tensile strength at break, tear strength, rebound resilience, and abrasion resistance by 6.46%, 24.43%, 12.02%, 6.94%, 12.01%, and 22.75%, respectively. IL played a crucial role in the surface modification of HCNF, enabling their excellent dispersion and full reinforcement efficiency within the matrix. This research provides a novel and industrially promising strategy to address the dispersion issues of HCNF and improve the comprehensive properties of composite materials, opening up new avenues for the development of related materials.

High mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding based carboxymethyl cellulose/SiO2 composite structures for interfacial bonding of reinforced polyimide fiber/EPDM composites

Youquan Ling,Junjie Liu,Bolin Xiao,Hui Jin,Luxiang Zhao,Yanjiang Bai,Xi Zhang,Mei Liang,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a polymer abundant in hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, was employed as an interfacial layer between polyimide fibers and EPDM rubber. The formation of hydrogen bonds between CMC and the polyimide fibers facilitated a robust encapsulation of CMC on the fiber surface. Additionally, a greater number of SiO 2 nanoparticles were adsorbed onto the CMC surface through hydrogen bonding and condensation reactions, significantly enhancing the fiber's surface roughness and the matrix's wettability. This strong mechanical interlocking structure markedly improved the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of the composites. Specifically, the H pull-out force, tensile strength, and elongation at break increased by 84.8 %, 89 %, and 45 %, respectively, compared to the control samples. In-situ electron microscopy further confirmed that the reinforced interface effectively inhibited crack propagation along the interface. Low-field NMR analysis revealed that the enhanced interfacial bonding restricted the mobility of rubber molecules, contributing to higher strains and stresses during the orientation hardening phase under tension. Moreover, the improved interfacial adhesion and the incorporation of SiO 2 within the interfacial layer also enhanced the ablative resistance and thermal insulation properties. These findings demonstrate that the CMC/SiO 2 encapsulation strategy represents an environmentally friendly, rapid, and efficient interfacial modification method for polyimide fiber-reinforced EPDM insulation materials.

Interfacial Reinforcement of EPDM Composites via Electron-Beam Irradiation: Synergistic Improvement in Mechanical and Ablation Performance

Youquan Ling,Luxiang Zhao,Yanjiang Bai,Shuai Li,Junjie Liu,Bolin Xiao,Xi Zhang,Mei Liang,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

In this study, high-energy electron beam irradiation was strategically employed to modify the interface of the aramid fibers. Systematic investigation revealed that controlled irradiation doses produced dual surface enhancements: simultaneous generation of reactive functional groups and nanoscale topological restructuring. These synergistic modifications effectively improved the interfacial adhesion with EPDM rubber matrices. The optimized coirradiation protocol with epichlorohydrin demonstrated superior performance, achieving remarkable enhancements of 154% in H-pullout force and 30% increase in tensile strength of EPDM composites. Advanced characterization through low-field NMR coupled with in situ electron microscopy analysis elucidated the dynamic interfacial bonding mechanism and its direct correlation with macroscopic mechanical properties. Furthermore, the strengthened interface was found to facilitate carbon layer evolution during ablation, enabling the formation of denser adiabatic carbon structures that reduced the mass ablation rate by 21%. This radiation-induced interfacial engineering approach presents a scalable pathway for manufacturing high-performance flexible composites, successfully addressing the long-standing challenge of balancing mechanical robustness with thermal protection requirements in aerospace applications.
