Aging effects on the stabilisation and reactivity of iron-based nanoparticles green synthesised using aqueous extracts of Eichhornia crassipes

Yi Yunqiang,Wei Yufen,Tsang Pokeung Eric,Fang Zhanqiang

Aging effects play a crucial role in determining applications of green-synthesised iron-based nanoparticles in wastewater treatment from laboratory scale to practical applications. In this study, iron-based nanoparticles (Ec-Fe-NPs) were synthesised using the extract of Eichhornia crassipes and ferric chloride. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the fresh Ec-Fe-NPs were spherical and had a narrow particle size range (50 to 80 nm). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrated that the Ec-Fe-NPs were mainly amorphous in nature and consisted of Fe 0 , FeO, Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 3 O 4 . As they aged, the particle size of the liquid Ec-Fe-NPs gradually increased and then tended to stabilise. Ec-Fe-NPs that were aged for 28 days were only 19% less efficient than fresh material at removing Cr(VI). Extracts aged up to 28 days were also tested, and their antioxidant capacity was found to be 15.4% lower than that of the fresh extracts. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) using iron-based nanoparticles synthesised with the aged extracts was 67.2%. Finally, the active components of the extracts, which were responsible for the reactivity and stability of the iron-based nanoparticles, were identified by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Overall, green-synthesised iron-based nanoparticles show promise for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater in practical applications.

Removal of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd by Two Types of Eichhornia crassipes

Qiang Li,Juhong Zhan,Bo Chen,Xiangqi Meng,Xuejun Pan

Long-root Eichhornia crassipes (L.R.E. crassipes), as a new kind of macrophyte, was used in Dianchi Lake in recent years, but its comparison in eliminating metals with traditional Eichhornia crassipes was never conducted. In this article, a comparative study on the removal of toxic metals from aqueous solutions by L.R.E. crassipes and E. crassipes was first studied. In total, the removal percentage of toxic metals followed the order of Pb>Cd>Cu>Zn, and L.R.E. crassipes was better than that with E. crassipes. Meanwhile, L.R.E. crassipes had a higher relative growth rate than E. crassipes, and solutions had a better physicochemical property after dealing with L.R.E. crassipes. Results also showed that maximum removal capacity for Zn, Cu, and Cd with L.R.E. crassipes was reached at pH 5. An orthogonal of L16 (44) in the multimetal system was designed to study the effects of cometals on removal of a single metal. Metal removal from the solution involves two stages: adsorption and absorption. Removal mainly occurred in the roots, and the main removal process was adsorption. Adsorption percentages of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd were 75%, 43%, 29%, and 61% in the root surface, respectively. Bioconcentration factors of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd were 267, 102, 230, and 173 with L.R.E. crassipes, respectively. Based on these results, L.R.E. crassipes could be used as a biodegradable absorbent to purify polluted water bodies fast and effectively.

Interactive Effects of Tetracyclines and Copper on Plant Growth and Nutrient Uptake by Eichhornia crassipes

Xin Lu,Yan Gao,Jia Luo,Shaohua Yan,Tong Wang,Lizhu Liu,Zhenhua Zhang

A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the growth and nutrient uptake by water hyacinth ( Eichhornia crassipes ) under the combined stress of typical veterinary antibiotic tetracyclines (TCs) with copper (Cu). Although E. crassipes proved relatively high tolerance to the co-contamination of Cu and TCs, the plant growth and nutrient uptake were significantly and interactively influenced by co-contamination between Cu and TCs after 20 days of growth. The inhibitory effects of Cu or TCs were more evident on physiological parameters than morphological parameters. An increase in the concentrations of Cu or TCs in solution was associated with a greater decrease in plant growth and nutrient uptake. The growth of shoots and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake by shoots were less affected by Cu/TCs compared to roots. The inhibitory effect of TCs on plants growth and nutrient uptake was much stronger than that of Cu, but the opposite was true for N and P concentrations in plant tissues. The mixture of TCs with the low-Cu showed a reduction in plant growth and nutrient uptake compared with the sole treatments of TCs; while the inhibition was alleviated with increases of Cu concentrations in solution. Therefore, the interactive effects of TCs and Cu should be taken into consideration to achieve a better knowledge on phytotoxicity and bioavailability of co-contamination between antibiotics and heavy metals to aquatic plants.

New Method of Fabricating Carbon Materials via Uptake of Nanoplastics into Eichhornia crassipes for Enhancing Supercapacitance

Liru Su,Qianghong Wu,Jianzhou Niu,Guangbi Gong,Fen Ran

A novel strategy of an in situ design precursor has been proposed by absorbing nanoplastic with Eichhornia crassipes. Eichhornia crassipes as the precursor has natural structural advantages. This natural complex network structure ensures the stability of the material and facilitates the efficient transportation of electrolytes in the whole material. The presence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) will change the graphitization degree and promote pore formation in carbon materials during carbonization. The obtained carbon materials have an excellent pore structure, large specific surface area (765.202 m2/g), and high graphitization degree. Meanwhile, the Eichhornia crassipes–polystyrene (EC-PS25) carbon electrode material fabricated from the above plant precursor exhibits a specific capacity of 519.0 F/g at 0.5 A/g. This study provides a new idea for improving the performance of carbon-based electrode materials.

Biosynthesized iron nanoparticles in aqueous extracts of Eichhornia crassipes and its mechanism in the hexavalent chromium removal

Yufen Wei,Zhanqiang Fang,Liuchun Zheng,Eric Pokeung Tsang

Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), a species of invasive weeds has caused serious ecological damage due to its extraordinary fertility and growth rate. However, it has not yet been exploited for use as a resource. This paper reported the synthesis and characterization of amorphous iron nanoparticles (Ec-Fe-NPs) from Fe(III) salts in aqueous extracts of Eichhornia crassipes . The nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, FTIR, DLS and the zeta potential methods. The characterization results confirmed the successful synthesis of amorphous iron nanoparticles with diameters of 20–80   nm. Moreover, the nanoparticles were mainly composed of zero valent iron nanoparticles which were coated with various organic matters in the extracts as a capping or stabilizing agents. Batch experiments showed that 89.9% of Cr(VI) was removed by the Ec-Fe-NPs much higher than by the extracts alone (20.4%) and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (47.3%). Based on the kinetics study and the XPS analysis, a removal mechanism dominated by adsorption and reduction with subsequently co-precipitation was proposed.

Quantitative effects of surface oxidation on biochar derived from long-root Eichhornia Crassipes plants as Cd2+ adsorbent

Sen Lin,Yihong Guo,Lei Zhou,Hongjun Yang

Quantitative effects of surface oxidation on Cd 2+ adsorption performance of biochar derived from long-root Eichhornia Crassipes plants were systematically investigated. It was revealed that oxidation degree was positively related with the intensity of surface functional groups and harmless for the structural stability, while biochar yield would decline sharply resulting from for over-oxidization. Correspondingly, the Cd 2+ adsorption capacity exhibited an uptrend with the increasing oxidation on account of the abundant adsorption sites. Moreover, Cd 2+ adsorption on the biochar with different oxidation degrees were also investigated comprehensively, indicating adsorption performances in a similar trend highly sensitive to solution pH and ionic strength . In addition, the adsorption isotherms were found to manifest the saturated adsorption capacity for Cd 2+ increased from 0.333 mol/g to 0.487 mmol/g at 30 °C by strengthening oxidation. All synthesized biochar could keep consistent adsorption performance in multiple adsorption-desorption cycles.

Magnetic biochar derived from Eichhornia crassipes for highly efficient Fenton-like degradation of antibiotics: Mechanism and contributions

Yunqiang Yi,Jiayi Luo,Zhanqiang Fang

The active components in biochar decrease markedly after hydrogen peroxide activation and the recycle of exhausted biochar is inconvenient, which hinder the application of biochar in advanced oxidation processes . In this study, magnetic biochar was successfully prepared using Eichhornia crassipes and iron salts via the impregnation-pyrolysis method. The efficiency of metronidazole degradation was 97.4% in the magnetic biochar/hydrogen peroxide system, which was approximately 28 times higher than that in the biochar/hydrogen peroxide system. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses demonstrated that metronidazole elimination in the magnetic biochar/hydrogen peroxide system was mainly attributable to hydroxyl radicals , and the contribution of hydroxyl radicals to metronidazole degradation was calculated to be approximately 84.0%. Hydrogen peroxide activation by persistent free radicals and functional groups in the magnetic biochar during metronidazole degradation was negligible. Moreover, Fe(II) in the magnetic biochar was found to play the key role in hydrogen peroxide activation, with its contribution to metronidazole degradation accounting for nearly 90.0%. This work provides a new method to utilize harvested E. crassipes to generate high-performance magnetic biochar that can be used for efficient elimination of antibiotics from aquatic environments.

Synergistic highly sensitive electrochemical detection of enrofloxacin using Eichhornia crassipes-derived carbon dots and molecularly imprinted polymer networks

Chang-Hong Wang,Yi-Yue Tang,Yan-Jun Li,Fu-Lan Xiao,Lian-Di Zhou,Qi-Hui Zhang,Chun-Su Yuan

Excessive use of enrofloxacin has detrimental impacts on human health and the ecological environment. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive platform for the detection of enrofloxacin. Herein, Eichhornia crassipes , an aquatic invasive plant, was utilized to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon dots for constructing the enrofloxacin-imprinted electrochemical sensor. The combination of nitrogen-doped carbon dots and multi-walled carbon nanotubes enhanced electrode conductivity and enriched active binding sites, improving sensor sensitivity. Meanwhile, highly biocompatible nicotinamide and L-cysteine were used as functional monomers to construct imprinting layers, enabling highly specific dual-site recognition of enrofloxacin. The sensor exhibited robust recognition capability for enrofloxacin under optimized conditions, offering a wide analytical range (0.05-100   μM) and low detection limit (0.0343   μM). Notably, the prepared sensor showed adequate recovery levels for analysis of real samples (fish flesh = 95.79%-110.59%, lake water = 97.22%-106.75%). Finally, the devised sensor performed favorably in the aqueous environment and meat products compared to standard methods, demonstrating its significant potential for trace enrofloxacin monitoring.

Recycling application of waste long-root Eichhornia crassipes in the heavy metal removal using oxidized biochar derived as adsorbents

Sen Lin,Weiwei Huang,Hongjun Yang,Shuying Sun,Jianguo Yu

An oxidized biochar was prepared using long-root Eichhornia crassipes through an aerobic/anaerobic hybrid calcination to recycle its waste plants after eutrophic treatments. The adsorption performances of the biochar were investigated and the results showed that the adsorption equilibrium could arrive in 30 min and the adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ at 30 °C were 0.57, 0.41, 0.44 and 0.48 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption could be promoted at higher pH and temperature and the adsorption tolerance for different heavy metal ions to the existence of competing ions and organic matters was hierarchical. The adsorption was deduced to be heterozygous courses and mainly controlled by complexation of oxygen-containing groups with these heavy metal ions. It was confirmed that the biochar could be regenerated with HCl solution and the adsorption performance kept consistent in 10 adsorption–desorption cycles.

Adsorption dynamics and mechanism of aqueous sulfachloropyridazine and analogues using the root powder of recyclable long-root Eichhornia crassipes

Lin Liu,Shuangqing Hu,Genxiang Shen,Usman Farooq,Wei Zhang,Sen Lin,Kuangfei Lin

In this study, we reclaimed the root powder of long-root Eichhornia crassipes ( L.R.E.C. ) as a biosorbent to remove aqueous sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) and other sulfonamides. The adsorption processes were investigated dependent on multiple measurements, including FT-IR and XPS analysis. The results confirmed that the basic amine group of neutral SCP molecules and the carboxyl hydroxyl on the surface of the root powder played the leading role in adsorption processes. Additionally, the experiments of ionic strength effect validated the involvement of electrostatic interaction in adsorption. Meanwhile, the adsorption data were fitted by various models and the results indicated that the Pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model could well describe the adsorption processes, indicating the existence of physisorption and chemisorption as multi-layer adsorption. The maximum capacities of root powder for SCP were calculated to be 226.757 μg g −1 (288.15 K), 182.815 μg g −1 (303.15 K) and 163.132 μg g −1 (318.15 K) at pH of 3.0. The thermodynamic results revealed that the adsorption was a spontaneous and exothermic process. Moreover, the accordance with intra-particle diffusion presented that the adsorption processes could be divided into three steps and the reaction constant had a negatively linear relationship with the thickness of the boundary layer. The results proved that root powder of L.R.E.C. has great potential to remediate sulfonamides at practical level.

Removal of aqueous fluoroquinolones with multi-functional activated carbon (MFAC) derived from recycled long-root Eichhornia crassipes: batch and column studies

Liu Lili,Chen Xin,Wang Zhiping,Lin Sen

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) occur broadly in natural media due to its extensive use, and it has systematic effects on our ecosystem and human immunity. In this study, long-root Eichhornia crassipes was reclaimed as a multi-functional activated carbon (MFAC) to remove fluoroquinolones (FQs) from contaminated water. To get insight into the adsorption mechanism, multiple measurements, including FTIR and XPS analyses, were employed to investigate the adsorption processes of ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin as well as the experiments of effect of exogenous factors on adsorption performances. The results confirmed that the adsorption of FQs by MFAC was mainly attributed to the electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond interaction, and electronic-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction. In addition, the kinetics and thermodynamics experiments demonstrated that the MFAC possessed great adsorption performance for FQs. According to the Langmuir model, the saturated adsorption capacities exceeded 145.0 mg/g and 135.1 mg/g for CIP and NOR at 303.15 K, respectively. The column experiments were conducted to explore the application performance of MFAC on the advanced treatment of synthetic water at different flow rates and bed depths. The adsorption capacity of CIP on MFAC was estimated by the Thomas models and the bed-depth service time (BDST) models, reaching 127.56 mg/g and 11,999.52 mg/L, respectively. These results also provide a valid approach for the resource recycling of the redundant long-root Eichhornia crassipes plants. Graphical abstract

Study on the adsorption performance and competitive mechanism for heavy metal contaminants removal using novel multi-pore activated carbons derived from recyclable long-root Eichhornia crassipes

Fangjun Cao,Cheng Lian,Jianguo Yu,Hongjun Yang,Sen Lin

Long-root Eichhornia crassipes has shown great remediation capacity for eutrophication while the dispose of massive plants reaped is a pressing challenge for its large-scale application. In this study the waste plants were reclaimed and employed to prepare multi-pore activated carbons (MPAC) with high specific surface area through a simple gradient heating method. Owing to the large specific surface area and abundant multiple functional groups, the MPAC exhibited great adsorption performances for heavy metals with great adsorption capacities and rapid rate. Careful adsorption investigation indicated that the adsorption was mainly controlled by a charge transfer complex pattern. In addition, the adsorption impetuses were heterozygous involving electrostatic interaction, electron sharing or electronic-donor-acceptor interaction, etc. Moreover, the competitive adsorption reflected adsorption preference existed in the heavy metal removal using the MPAC as adsorbents due to the imparities in the adsorption affinity, thus resulting in the differences of the adsorption tolerance to exogenous influence.
