A rapid and highly sensitive time-resolved fluorescence (TRF)-based aptasensor for simultaneous recognition of mycotoxins ochratoxin A (OTA) and fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ) was developed using multi-color, Ln 3+ -doped time-resolved fluorescence nanoparticles (TRF-NPs) (NaYF 4 : Ce, Tb and NH 2 -Eu/DPA@SiO 2 NPs) coupled with complementary strand DNA (cDNA) as luminescence probe and aptamers-conjugated amine-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) act as a capture probe. Under the optimized conditions, the time-resolved fluorescence intensities at 544 and 618 nm corresponded with Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ , respectively, were used to measure FB 1 ( Y = 19,177.1 + (− 12,054.4) x , R 2 = 0.9917) and OTA ( Y = 4138.8 + (− 11,182.6) x , R 2 = 0.9924), respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) for FB 1 and OTA were 0.019 pg mL −1 and 0.015 pg mL −1 , respectively, which were much lower than previously described methods for simultaneous recognition of mycotoxins OTA and FB 1 while detection range varied from 0.0001–0.5 ng mL −1 . This aptasensor was effectively applied to quantity FB 1 and OTA in maize samples and results were compared with ELISA method. This is the first reported time-resolved fluorescence (TRF)-based aptasensor to detect two agriculturally important toxins in the maize. The developed aptasensor has potential to be used for detection of toxins in food safety fields.

Here, a novel fluorescent carbon dots (CDs)@Eu-2, 6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) was synthesized by encapsulating CDs into the Eu-DPA MOFs for the detection of Cu 2+ . The as-prepared CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs fluorescent probe was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed the CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs exhibited the uniform ball-flower-like nanostructures and were very stable in aqueous solution due to their nanoscaled size and the ball-flower-like nanostructures. The CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs could emit two kinds of fluorescence which originated from CDs and Eu-DPA MOFs, respectively under a single wavelength excitation at 275 nm. In the presence of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence of Eu-DPA MOFs decreased and the fluorescence of CDs kept constant to result in ratiometric fluorescent response toward Cu 2+ when they were used as the recognition parts and the reference, respectively. The obtained CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs for the detection of Cu 2+ showed a wide linear range (50 nM–10 μM) and a low detection limit (26.3 nM) with high sensitivity, stability and selectivity. The work provides a good method to construct fluorescent sensors based on MOFs.

A dual-emission CDs@Eu-DPA composite was rapidly synthesized via dielectric barrier discharge microplasma technology using carbon dots (CDs), 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA), and Eu 3+ as precursors. CDs@Eu-DPA was subsequently applied for ratiometric fluorescence and visual analysis of oxytetracycline (OTC) in food samples. When OTC was introduced, the blue fluorescence of CDs was quenched via the inner filter effect, while OTC coordinated with Eu 3+ in Eu-DPA to form a complex, leading to the enhancement of the red fluorescence of Eu 3+ at 615 nm through antenna effect. Additionally, principal component analysis was employed to distinguish four different antibiotics, including OTC, chlortetracycline, tetracycline, and doxycycline. Under optimized conditions, the ratiometric fluorescence analysis and smartphone-assisted RGB analysis exhibited linear detection ranges of 0.05–210.0 μM and 0.3–90.0 μM for OTC, respectively, with limits of detection of 0.02 μM and 0.08 μM, respectively. The satisfactory recoveries in food samples were ultimately achieved through the dual-mode sensing method.

The overuse of antibiotics leads to significant health risks and environmental challenges. Therefore, selective and sensitive detection of antibiotic residues is a critical issue. Here, a double-emission ratiometric fluorescence probe (Lu-Eu-DPA) was constructed for the selective detection of gentamicin sulfate (GEN), neomycin (NEO), and erythromycin (EM). The Lu-Eu-DPA coordination polymer nanoparticles composed of luminol, the coordinated nuclear metal Eu 3+ , and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA). The coordination reaction between luminol molecules and Eu 3+ ions produce the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect, while DPA acts as a ligand for the antenna, absorbing energy from the excitation light and then transferring the energy to Eu 3+ . Based on the AIE effect and antenna effect (AE), the fluorescence intensity of Lu-Eu-DPA at 426 nm and 617 nm was correlated with the concentration of GEN, NEO, and EM, and the detection limits of GEN, NEO, and EM were 20, 25, and 48 nmol/L, respectively. The detection capability of the proposed method in pork samples was also studied. In addition, semi-quantitative determination of GEN, NEO, and EM was conveniently and efficiently performed using a smartphone-based visualization method. These results suggested that this probe with good selectivity and specificity was a promising method for swiftly detecting multiple antibiotic residues.

Lanthanide coordination compounds (LnCC), as excellent luminophores, exhibit ultrasensitive responses to the structural details of coordination environments, providing an effective platform for chemical and biomedical detection. Due to the overtones of molecular vibrations in water that cause luminescence quenching, LnCC-based sensors are typically used in heterogeneous systems, where the compounds are dispersed as solid nanoparticles in aqueous solvents. However, this reduces sensor stability, affecting sensitivity and selectivity, and complicates mechanistic analysis. In this work, we developed homogeneous luminescence detection techniques using LnCC and investigated the underlying chemical mechanisms. The Eu-DPA coordination compound was synthesized as a homogeneous detector with good water solubility (140.3 mg/g) and excellent luminescence (92.49% quantum efficiency and >2 ms lifetime at 1 g/L concentration) via multifaceted sonication. Thanks to its homogeneous nature, the sensor achieved high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability for detecting the carcinoid marker 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in water, plasma, and urine. Eu-DPA exposes numerous pyridine carboxylate oxygen sites that form hydrogen bonds with the amino groups in 5-HIAA. Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (TAS) and Time-Resolved Luminescence Spectroscopy (TRES) further confirm that electrostatic interactions between the hydrogen-bonding sites significantly influence the energy transfer process, as evidenced by changes in luminescence behavior. This work not only addresses the challenge of balancing water solubility and efficient luminescence in lanthanide complexes but also offers new insights into the development of practical biomedical luminescence sensors.
