Multiple functions incorporated in one single component material offer important applications in biosystems. Here we prepared a divalent state of rare earth EuS nanocrystals (NCs), which provides luminescent and magnetic properties, using both 1-Dodecanethiol (DT) and oleylamine (OLA) as reducing agents. The resultant EuS NCs exhibit controllable shapes, uniform size, and bright luminescence with a quantum yield as high as 3.5%. OLA as a surface ligand plays an important role in tunable morphologies, such as nanowires, nanorods, nanospheres et al. Another attractive nature of the EuS NCs is their paramagnetism at room temperature. In order to expand the biological applications, the resultant EuS NCs were modified with amphiphilic block copolymer F127 and transferred from oil to water phase. The excellent biocompatibility of EuS NCs is demonstrated as well as preservation of their luminescence and paramagnetic properties. The EuS NCs offer multifunction and great advantages of bright luminescence, paramagnetic, controllable morphologies, and good biocompatibility promising applications in the field of simultaneous magnetic resonance and fluorescence bioimaging.
EuS and Gd2O2S nanocrystals with narrow size distribution are synthesized in high yields by the thermal decomposition of Eu(oleate)3 or Gd(oleate)3 in oleylamine using CS2 as the sulfur source. The dimensionalities of these nanocrystals can be facilely tuned by the addition of 1-dodecanethiol. The morphologies and crystal structures of EuS and Gd2O2S nanocrystals are characterized by TEM and XRD. The magnetic properties of the obtained nanocrystals are also investigated. The experimental results illustrate that CS2 is an effective sulfur source for the preparation of metal sulfide and lanthanide oxysulfide semiconductor nanocrystals.
In this work, the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of europium sulfide nanocrystals (EuS NCs) in K 2 S 2 O 8 cathode co-reagents was studied. Based on selective quenching of the ECL emission from EuS NCs by Hg 2+ , a novel label-free ECL sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Hg 2+ was developed. A linear response between the ECL intensity and the concentration of Hg 2+ was obtained in the range from 0.1 pM to 10 5 pM, achieving a detection limit of 0.028 pM. Moreover, this sensor was also successfully applied to the detection of Hg 2+ in seafood with good recovery. The current study provides a green and feasible method for the detection of trace Hg 2+ in seafood.
