Thermal and electro-induced shape-memory Eucommia ulmoides gum composites filled with carbon nanotubes

Lin Xia,Qi Wang,Jiafeng Meng,Zhenguo Ma,Ping Zhao

A series of thermal and electro double-stimulus shape memory composites were processed using natural Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Mechanical, cure, and thermal properties were studied by universal testing machine, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. The shape memory behavior of the composites was explored via heat and electrical stimulation. The cross-linked network in the composites acted as a fixed domain, and the crystalline regions acted as a reversible domain during shape memory process. We studied the shape memory behavior of composites at different voltage and monitored the temperature change of composites during the process of electro-induced deformation memory in real time. Experimental results showed that appropriate amount of carbon nanotubes could not only improve the strength of composites but also provide electrical shape memory properties to composites. So, it is underscored that these kinds of shape memory composites exhibit excellent electro-responsive properties and have the potential to be used for intelligent and multiresponse shape memory applications.

Bio-Based, Self-Crosslinkable Eucommia ulmoides Gum/Silica Hybrids with Body Temperature Triggering Shape Memory Capability

Xin Qi,Enyun Xu,Manman Jia,Jichuan Zhang,Liqun Zhang,Dongmei Yue

At present, the synthesis of body temperature triggering shape memory polymers usually requires elaborate structural design, which limits their wide application. Herein, starting from bio-based Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG), a series of EUG/silica hybrids (ESHs) are prepared through a facile one-pot process, in which EUG is epoxied and then self-crosslinked with SiO 2 by epoxy ring-open reaction. Varying the amount of H 2 O 2 , the shape memory transition temperature ( T trans ) of ESHs is adjusted to 47.4–36.6 ℃, which is close to human body temperature (37 ℃). Among them, ESH-17 exhibited the best body temperature triggering shape memory ability ( T trans = 36.6 ℃), which can restore the permanent shape within 60 s at 37 ℃ with a shape fixity ratio of 99% and shape recovery ratio near 100%. In addition, the shape memory mechanism is discussed and shows some application scenarios of ESHs. The as-produced materials can be used as smart biomaterials such as self-tightening sutures, self-sealing root canal filling materials, and so on.

Role of epoxidized natural Eucommia ulmoides gum in modifying the interface of styrene-butadiene rubber/silica composites

Yan Wang,Jinhui Liu,Lin Xia,Mei Shen,Zhenxiang Xin,Jinkuk Kim

Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) is a renewable and sustainable polymer, which could be used as rubber or plastic by altering its crosslinking density while the complicated extracting process and nonpolar molecular chains limited its application. In this effort, a novel extraction method was introduced, which could simplify the extraction process of EUG. Then, the extracted EUG-chloroform (CHCl 3 ) solution was directly used to prepare epoxidized EUG (EEUG) with an epoxy degree of 40.0% to improve its polarity. The epoxidized natural EUG exhibiting both polar and nonpolar motives had an advantage in working as an interfacial compatibilizer for polymer composites, especially bio-based composites due to its inherent biocompatibility. Accordingly, the role of EEUG in modifying the interface of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica composites were explored. The results showed that EEUG in SBR/silica composites acted not only as a compatibilizer but also as a constructure generating better mechanical properties than other compatibilizers, such as silane couplings, Si-69 and KH-550, and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). The simplified extracting process and the epoxy modification of EUG would extend its application in rubber materials, medical materials, and biopolymer materials.

Highly efficient extraction of Eucommia ulmoides gum by IL-organic solvent biphasic system

Chunxiang Lin,Hao Yi,Ling Chen,Yifan Liu,Xiaoxia Ye,Yuancai Lv,Minghua Liu

A biphasic solvent system consisting of ionic liquids (IL) and petroleum ethers was applied in the extraction of Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) from pericarp . Effects of IL and extraction parameters on the yield and purity of EUG were investigated. The results showed that the addition of IL could enhance the yield and purity of EUG extracted from pericarp comparing with the traditional alike pretreatment method. FTIR, XRD and 1 H NMR characterization conformed the chemical structure of EUG. DSC analysis reviewed the partial destruction of crystal structure and the disappearance of β-crystal phase of EUG extracted by biphasic solvent system, resulting in the decrease of the melting point and increase of glass transition temperature. Moreover, the extracted EUG exhibited high tensile strength of 27.68 MPa, excellent elongation at break of 1069%, and thus high toughness of 181.45 MJ∙m −3 . Additionally, the excellent reusability of IL and petroleum ethers showed the extraction method of the biphasic solvent system promise as a feasible method to replace the traditional alkali pretreatment.

Triple shape memory and shrinkage-resistant Eucommia Ulmoides gum/polyethylene smart foam blends

Zhongtian Li,Yuan Lyu,Wuchao Cheng,Jieting Geng,Lin Xia

Foamed rubber materials play a vital role in industrial applications, but their utility is significantly limited by thermal shrinkage at elevated temperatures. Addressing this critical challenge, our study pioneers a novel chemical foaming strategy to engineer Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) and polyethylene (PE) foamed blends with integrated shrinkage resistance and triple-shape memory properties. The present investigation demonstrates how polyethylene content influences foaming morphology, vulcanization kinetics, and functional properties of blends. Notably, the EUG/P 20 blend demonstrates 85 % shrinkage resistance at 60 °C, significantly outperforming conventional foamed rubbers in thermal stability. To our knowledge, this study represents the first systematic investigation into shrinkage-resistant EUG-based foams, establishing a novel paradigm for developing anti-shrinkage elastomers through polymer blending strategies. The designed EUG/PE foamed blends show promising potential for oilfield applications, particularly as downhole filtration materials where thermal stability and shape adaptability are critical performance metrics.

Scratch behavior of fully sustainable polylactide/modified natural Eucommia ulmoides gum thermoplastic vulcanizates

Yan Wang,Zhancheng Zhang,Yaoming Zhang,Xianqiang Pei,Tingmei Wang,Qihua Wang

To make full use of the renewability of polylactide (PLA) and natural Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG), novel fully sustainable thermal plastic vulcanizates (TPVs) with high toughness were developed via dynamic vulcanization technique based on modified EUG (referred to as EUG-GMA). The latter greatly improved the toughness of PLA and the mechanism was discussed with respect to micro structure analysis. Aiming at providing theoretical guidance for PLA/EUG-GMA TPVs in scratch related applications, the scratch behavior of TPVs with different EUG-GMA content was studied in single-pass and multiple-pass scratching mode, after which the tribological mechanisms were discussed based on worn surface morphology and contact area analysis. It is revealed that the promoted interfacial adhesion due to in-situ compatibilization and the co-continuous phase structure of PLA/EUG-GMA TPVs played crucial roles in enhancing the TPVs' toughness. In addition to tribo-conditions, the above mentioned interfacial performance was also responsible for the variation of scratch behavior of different TPVs. It is expected that the present study would open up a new route of manufacturing sustainable composites combined with scratch resistance and toughness.

Porous Eucommia ulmoides Gum Monoliths Prepared via Modified Pickering High Internal Phase Emulsion Method

Zhonglei Kang,Hongli Hu,Hiroshi Uyama,Bo-xing Zhang

Development of materials based on Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) has been receiving increasing interest because of its unique properties and abundant natural sources. In this study, EUG monolithic materials with tunable and interconnected pore structures were prepared via modified Pickering high internal phase emulsion. The effects of dispersed phase volume fractions, cross-linkers, and stabilizers on structures and properties of EUG monoliths were systematically investigated. The usage of a surfactant (span 80) was suppressed by the introduction of particles including graphene, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Moreover, the pyrolyzed sample derived from the CNT-stabilized EUG monolith exhibited excellent electromagnetic shield performance. This study demonstrates a method to prepare porous monolithic EUG materials, which may have potential applications for thermal insulation and electromagnetic shielding materials.

Extraction and characterization of Eucommia ulmoides gum from Eucommia leaves by fermentation with Coprinellus disseminatus

Zhang Chuhan,Qin Lijun

AimsTo determine the optimum conditions for extracting Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) from Eucommia ulmoides leaves during fermentation by Coprinellus disseminatus. At the same time, the EUG characteristics were characterized. Methods and resultsThe ability of C. disseminatus to secrete degrading enzymes, including enzyme activity and lignocellulose content, was observed by culturing C. disseminatus on a medium with different formulations. Based on the optimal formula, the fermentation conditions were determined by an orthogonal test and EUG was extracted. After that, the characteristic parameters of EUG were determined by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, SEM, POM, DSC, XRD and GPC. The results showed that the lignin and hemicellulose contents in Eucommia leaves decreased significantly with the increase of fermentation days, and C. disseminatus mediated fermentation had an obvious damage effect on the tissue of Eucommia leaves. At the same time, At the same time, xylan can be used as an initiator to induce the expression of degradation-related enzymes. The extraction yield of EUG from Eucommia ulmoides leaves after fermentation was 3.06%, which was significantly improved. The optimum fermentation conditions were 4% inoculum, 28°C fermentation temperature, and pH = 5. The results of infrared FT-IR and 1H-NMR showed that the extract had typical characteristics of EUG, and the surface and quenching part of the EUG were smooth, as observed by SEM. In addition, DSC and XRD analysis show that there are two crystal types, α and β, in the crystallization process of molten EUG. The main crystallization type of EUG extracted from fermented leaves was β type.ConclusionThe ability of C. disseminatus to produce degrading enzymes can effectively improve the extraction rate of EUG under optimal fermentation process. The method can maintain the integrity of gutta-percha better. EUG has the characteristics of good crystallinity, many β crystal types and high molecular weight.

Bio-based Eucommia ulmoides gum/low density polyethylene shape memory composites reinforced by zinc methacrylate

Yan Wang,Xianqiang Pei,Lin Xia,Zhancheng Zhang,Qihua Wang,Tingmei Wang

In this paper, we present an efficient and green extraction process for Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) to solve the tricky problems in separation and precipitation, providing a new idea for the industrialization of EUG extraction. Subsequently, the obtained EUG was blended with low density polyethylene (LDPE) and zinc methacrylate (ZDMA) to fabricate novel shape memory composites with both covalent and ionic crosslinking networks. It was found that the improvement in mechanical performance and enhancement in shape recovery ability of the EUG/LDPE/ZDMA composites was attributable to the Zn 2+ -based ionic crosslinks. The EUG/LDPE/ZDMA shape memory composites could be candidates in the production of medical fixing materials, hot-shrinkable tubes and packaging products. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Co-vulcanization of natural rubber and Eucommia ulmoides gum for mediation of the nonlinear rheology behaviors

Zhaopeng Hu,Xin Jiang,Benteng Liu,Qiao Li,Hongda Meng,Yihu Song,Yongzhong Bao,Qiang Zheng

Co-vulcanization of natural rubber (NR) and high-moduli Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) is promising while the reduction in crystallinity of crosslinked EUG is adverse for developing high-performance materials. Proposed herein is a novel method to prepare high-strength and high-stretchability NR/EUG vulcanizates with rapid vulcanization of EUG into slightly crosslinked particles, followed by further vulcanization of NR to form crosslinked matrix network. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are employed to facilitate the vulcanization of EUG during its blending with NR. The two-step vulcanization results in vulcanizates exhibiting superior mechanical properties under shear, tensile, and compressive conditions, significantly exceeding those of vulcanizates prepared by traditional processing methods. The reinforcement mechanism is elucidated by controlling thermomechanical coupling conditions and is supported by comprehensive structural characterizations. It is suggested that the EUG crystalline regions, maintained through the special processing method, work in conjunction with the stress-induced crystallization of the matrix to enhance the vulcanizates, nearly doubling the deformation stress at 800 % strain. The crystalline regions can mediate the deformation stress during shear and compression and weaken nonlinear rheological behavior. The established structure-performance relationship is guidable for preparing high-performance NR/EUG blend vulcanizates.

Fast and simple construction of composite films with renewable Eucommia ulmoides gum and Poly(ε-caprolactone)

Pan-Pan Yue,Ze-Jian Leng,Jing Bian,Ming-Fei Li,Feng Peng,Run-Cang Sun

Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) and Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), a degradable, promising and “green” feedstock , can be used to fabricate composite films by a rapid and simple solution casting method, which have characteristics of degradability, hydrophobicity , strength , and toughness. Herein, EUG was extracted with petroleum ether from seed coats of Eucommia ulmoides and characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The FT-IR and NMR revealed that the construction of the EUG and PCL of composite films are a physical blending process . Besides, the addition of PCL effectively enhances the thermal stability of composite films. The concentration of PCL is 0.84 wt% in composite film (P 0.84 wt% ), which exhibits an excellent elongation at break and energy density at break of 514.3% and 106.4 MJ/m 3 , respectively. The maximum tensile strength of the resultant film is 1.8 times higher than that of the control film. The hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier property of P 0.84 wt% film is increased by 26.6% and 84.0%, respectively, than that of the control film. It is believed this work provided a rapid and simple strategy to fabricate degradable, strong, and tough film.

Hydrogen bond competition driven cell wall deconstruction enables green extraction of Eucommia ulmoides gum using deep eutectic solvents

Zemin Ou,Qingxia Li,Lingyu Jia,Chao Chen,Hong Yi,Maoqing Wang,Chun Li,Zhimin Wang,Xiaoqian Liu

Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) is a natural trans−1,4-polyisoprene with promising applications in green elastomers and bio-based materials. However, its extraction is limited by strong confinement within a cellulose-hemicellulose-lignin matrix. This study aims to elucidate a hydrogen bond competition mechanism to enable efficient cell wall deconstruction and EUG release. Deep eutectic solvent systems were designed by tuning hydrogen bond donors and acceptors to selectively disrupt polysaccharide hydrogen bonding networks. The results show that hydrogen bond basicity, acidity, and viscosity collectively regulate solvent penetration and competitive interactions, with the choline chloride-lactic acid system providing the optimal balance between deconstruction efficiency and mass transfer. Spectroscopic analyses reveal pronounced weakening and rearrangement of cellulose and hemicellulose hydrogen bonding networks, which correlate with enhanced EUG release, structural loosening, and controlled molecular weight distribution. Coupling this system with petroleum ether extraction and optimizing conditions via response surface methodology achieves an EUG extraction yield of 20.76 ± 0.96%, with an extraction efficiency of 90.10 ± 4.17% and a purity of 98.24 ± 0.93%, while preserving EUG integrity. The extracted EUG retains its characteristic trans-1,4-polyisoprene structure and exhibits favorable thermal and mechanical properties. These findings provide a mechanism-driven basis for scalable and sustainable extraction processes and offer guidance for the rational design of solvent systems in industrial biomass valorization.
