A temperature self-calibrated potential of hydrogen (pH) sensor based on the single mode fiber-tapered dual core photonic crystal fiber-single mode fiber (SMF-TDCPCF-SMF) structure cascaded with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated. The TDCPCF structure formed Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is modified with a coating of graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (GO/PVA) hybrid hydrogel to realize the measurement of pH, and the uncoated FBG is used to calibrate temperature. In our experiment, the sensitivity coefficient of 0.69 nm/pH with R2=0.99 and the hysteresis loss of less than 0.007 are achieved within the pH range from pH 4.00 to pH 9.85. The measured response time from pH 7.00 to pH 4.00, 6.00 and 9.85 are no higher than 10s. Moreover, the resonant wavelengths of MZI and FBG also exhibit good linear relationship with the temperature sensitivity coefficient of 0.15 nm/°C (R2=0.99) and 0.09 nm/°C (R2=0.97) respectively. It is demonstrated successfully that the proposed sensor has broad application prospects in the field of environmental monitoring, biological sensing and chemical analysis, due to the good performance of the temperature self-calibrated pH monitoring, repeatability, linearity, response time and reversibility.

All fiber Michaelson interferometer cascaded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor for simultaneous measurement of trace dimethyl methyl phosphate and temperature is proposed. One end of the four-core fiber (FCF) is spliced with a multimode fiber (MMF), the other end is flattened and evaporated with silver film to enhance reflection, and the Michelson interference structure is formed. The grating is engraved in the single-mode fiber (SMF) core and spliced with MMF, then the Michelson interference cascaded FBG, FBG-MMF-FCF sensor is obtained. The sensing film, MnCo2O4 is coated on the surface of FCF, and the structure, elemental composition and morphology of MnCo2O4 were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The sensitivity and the detection limit of DMMP are 86.44 dB/ppm and 0.1767 ppb, respectively. The response/recovery time is about 14/10 s. the temperature sensitivity can be compensated and calculated as 0.069 nm/°C. The sensor has good selectivity and stability, and has a good application prospect in high sensitivity detection of trace DMMP vapor.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex system. Temperature, pH, oxygen content, and other biomarkers comprehensively reflect the growth state of the tumor, necessitating a multi-parameter detection strategy to garner the precise status of tumor for treatment guidance. Fluorescence imaging technology is a promising tool for realizing this goal due to its advantages of low cost, real-time responses, and high sensitivity. However, several limitations, including the shallow penetration depth of fluorescence signals in biological tissues and the potential crosstalk between multiple fluorescence signals, hinder the practical application of current fluorescence imaging technology. In this paper, a dual-mode optical fiber sensor consisting of a fiber fluorescence pH sensor and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensor is presented. The compact sensor uses different principles for pH and temperature monitoring, thus effectively eliminating potential crosstalk between different signals. In addition, its small size allows it to be inserted into deep tissues for detection. The sensor responds quickly to changes in pH.Moreover, the temperature sensitivity of FBG packaged with PDMS is 34 % higher than the uncoated FBG. In vivo experiments confirmed that the sensor can accurately distinguish normal tissues and tumor tissues. The proposed sensor provides a novel way to realize multi-parameter monitoring of tumor microenvironment and improve the specificity of tumor detection.

Quercetin was extracted from Portulaca oleracea L. through biphasic acid hydrolysis to investigate its potential as a suppressor of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) and its hypoglycemic effect in type 2 diabetic mice. The extraction procedure was optimized utilizing the response surface method (RSM) in a single-factor experimental setting. An extraction efficiency of 0.675% was achieved using the following optimized parameters: 0.064 mol/L vitriol, 1 : 109.155 solid-liquid ratio, and 21.408 min ultrasonication. Overall, findings indicate the effectiveness of quercetin extraction. A mouse model for type 2 diabetes was established to receive oral treatment with various quercetin concentrations for 8 weeks. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) and the DPP-IV activity in the serum were significantly reduced. The weight and insulin levels of the mice in the quercetin group were raised compared to those in the model group ( < 0.01). Quercetin dose-dependently inhibited postprandial blood glucose excursions, as demonstrated by the oral glucose tolerance test. These results confirmed that quercetin has hypoglycemic effects and considerably improves insulin sensitivity via DPP-IV targeting.

Noncaloric or low-caloric sweeteners have become popular worldwide, although debates persist regarding their impact on health. To investigate whether the sweeteners are favorable for glucose homeostasis, our study assessed the effects of glycyrrhetinic acid monoglucuronide (GAMG) and several commonly used sweeteners [glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), stevioside, erythritol, sucralose, and aspartame] on glycometabolism and elucidated the underlying mechanisms. The C57BL/6J male mice were exposed to different sweeteners for 10 weeks, and our results showed that GAMG significantly reduced fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels (FBG-control: 3.81 ± 0.42 mmol/L; FBG-GAMG: 3.37 ± 0.38 mmol/L; p < 0.05) and the blood glucose levels 15 and 30 min after sucrose or maltose loading (p < 0.05). Furthermore, it improved glucose tolerance (p = 0.028) and enhanced insulin sensitivity (p = 0.044), while the other sweeteners had negligible or adverse effects on glucose homeostasis. Subsequent experiments showed that GAMG inhibited α-glucosidases potently (IC50 = 0.879 mg·mL–1), increased three SCFA-producing bacteria and SCFAs levels (p < 0.05), and promoted the gene expression of SCFA receptor GPR43 (p = 0.018). These results suggest that GAMG may regulate blood glucose by inhibiting α-glucosidases and modulating gut microbial SCFAs. Our findings prove that GAMG, beneficial to blood glucose regulation, is a promising natural sweetener for future utilization.
