Ionic liquids have been extensively studied as solvents or catalysts for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of diesel fuel, but it is still a challenge to reduce the desulfurization time and steps. In this work, a new highly efficient desulfurization system composed of CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticle, [HMIM]Br-FeCl 3 and H 2 O 2 was developed for the ODS of FCC diesel fuel. The desulfurization performances were investigated including desulfurization time, temperature, volume ratio of IL/oil, O/S molar ratio, dosage of CoFe 2 O 4 , FeCl 3 content in ILs, regeneration, and reuse of catalyst and solvent. Owing to the coupled catalytic roles of CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticle and [HMIM]Br-FeCl 3 , where Co 2+ and Fe 3+ interact with H 2 O 2 to produce • OH radical that converts S-compounds into sulfone and sulfoxide compounds, such a desulfurization system is highly effective in removing S-compound in diesel fuel. The S-content in FCC diesel fuel was reduced from the original 272.8 ppm to 0.5 ppm with 99.82% S-removal efficiency after one step within 8 min under the optimal conditions of 25 °C, 8 min, V (IL/oil) = 1:10, O/S = 20, 5 wt% CoFe 2 O 4 dosage and n ([HMIM]Br)/ n (FeCl 3 ) = 1:1; the desulfurization performance is much better in desulfurization time and steps than other desulfurization systems reported previously. The desulfurization system can be regenerated and reused without remarkable loss of desulfurization activity. A desulfurization mechanism was proposed.

Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) diesel is the main contributor of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in diesel, so reducing the content of PAHs in FCC diesel is of great significance to environmental protection and high-value utilization of FCC diesel. To understand the potential separation of dicyclic aromatic from FCC diesel, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 2-methoxyethanol (EGME), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were selected as extracting solvents. The liquid-liquid phase behavior of the dodecane + 1-methylnaphthalene + solvent systems was determined to investigate the solvent extraction ability, the values of S were calculated and the high selectivity of DMSO could be confirmed. Then, the quantum chemical calculation found that the extraction mechanism of DMSO and DMF was weak H-bond and van der Waals (VDW) forces, while that of EGME was only VDW force. Additionally, the structure-activity relationship between solvent molecular structure and solvent selectivity was obtained by combining the experimental results and the quantum chemical calculations, which could provide theoretical guidance for the selection of high separation performance solvents in the future. Finally, the binary interaction parameters of NRTL and UNIQUAC models were obtained with the root-mean-square deviation ( RMSD ) values all less than 0.60%, which provide basic data for the further simulation of aromatics extraction of FCC diesel.
