Nickel-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) with respect to Li metal can enhance the energy density of lithium batteries effectively. However, the unstable Li deposition, together with the dissolution and migration of transition metal (TM) ions toward the anode deteriorate the cycle performance of NCM811||Li battery, especially when commercial carbonate electrolyte is used. Herein, tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphite (TMSPi) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) are used to construct a dual-additive electrolyte, by which both electrodes can be protected. It is found that TMSPi can be preferentially adsorbed on the cathode surface through its strong coordination with Ni4+, playing the role as a HF scavenger and suppressing TM ions dissolution, as well as mitigating the structural degradation of the cathode effectively. When it comes to the lithium anode, the presence of TMSPi may lead to side reactions with Li metal, accompanied by fast dendrite growth. The introduction of FEC could facilitate the formation of stable electrode/electrolyte interfaces on both sides. Particularly, reduce the direct contact between TMSPi and Li anode, thus ameliorate the incompatibility issue. Consequently, the NCM811||Li cell with dual-additive demonstrates excellent capacity retention of 81.2% after 500 cycles at 1 C rate. As a sharp contrast, it only retains 13.9% in the one with blank electrolyte. The findings of this work provide a new insight into enhancing the cycle performance of NCM811||Li system via the synergistic effect between additives.

With the rapid development of electronic communication technology, the issue of electromagnetic pollution has become increasingly prominent. Developing multifunctional protective materials that combine efficient electromagnetic microwave (EMW) absorption with environmental durability is of great significance. Inspired by the multi-branched structure of coral, this study successfully fabricated FeC/C nanofiber EMW absorbers with a coral-like network structure through electrospinning and carbonization processes and applied them to polyurea (PUA) coatings. The microstructure, electromagnetic parameters, and performance modulation mechanisms of the materials were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the bioinspired coral-like network structure optimizes multiple scattering paths of EMW and impedance matching characteristics, enabling FeC/C nanofibers to exhibit excellent EMW absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −67.24 dB at a thickness of 1.82 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.24 GHz. When applied to PUA coatings, this structure not only significantly enhances the EMW absorption performance of the composites (with P-30 exhibiting a RL min of −62.67 dB at 2.0 mm and an EAB of 6.22 GHz), but also imparts hydrophobic properties to the P-40 sample by constructing a micro/nano-scale rough surface. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties are notably improved, with the tensile strength of P-40 reaching 23.04 MPa and the tear strength of P-20 reaching 41.73 MPa. This study provides new design insights and technical references for the development of novel bioinspired multifunctional coating materials that integrate electromagnetic protection, environmental durability, and mechanical strength.

High-voltage lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LRMOs) are expected to become next-generation mainstream cathodes due to their higher voltage, higher specific capacity and lower cost. However, currently commercialized carbonate electrolytes still face the challenge of poor decomposition of solvents and lithium salts at high voltage, leading to serious interface side reactions and electrochemical performance degradation. Herein, we propose an interfacial chemical modification strategy based on the dual additives of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphate (TMSPa), to promote Li+ migration and ensure long-term cycling stability of LRMO-based batteries. Detailed characterization reveals that the dual additives FEC-TMSPa can promote the desolvation process of Li+ and reduce the adverse decomposition of electrolyte components by regulating the solvation structure of the electrolyte. Simultaneously, dual additives can facilitate the formation of a robust cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI)/solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) rich-in F/P/Si species, thereby reducing the interface side reactions, inhibiting the erosion of acidic substances on electrodes, and promoting the uniform deposition/stripping of Li+. As a result, the high-voltage LRMO-based batteries exhibit excellent rate performance and cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 82.36% after 500 cycles at 30 °C, and 86.9% after 150 cycles at a high-temperature of 55 °C, suggesting that the proposed strategy of synergistically regulating the interface chemistry with multiple additives is anticipated to facilitate the further application of high-voltage layered cathode materials.

Four-electron transfer process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has become a bottleneck restricting water electrolysis, due to its inherently high kinetic energy barrier. Therefore, the exploration for high-efficiency and long-term stable non-noble metal OER catalysts is crucial for sustainable energy conversion. This work designs a molten salt-mediated ball milling-pyrolysis stepwise treatment to synthesize spongy V 2 O 5 composite Fe-intercalated graphitic nitrogen (N–V 2 O 5 @FeC). Specifically, Fe-intercalated graphite is achieved using the FeCl 3 /KCl molten salt system, a highly conductive FeC substrate being constructed accordingly. Then, NH 3 generated from melamine pyrolysis enables spongy porous structure construction and N-doping. N–V 2 O 5 @FeC catalyst possesss the following advantages: First, spongy porous structure greatly increases exposure of active sites, while Fe intercalation-induced graphite edge defects and Fe–O–V bonds jointly enhance active site density of V 2 O 5 composite, thereby boosting catalyst activity. Second, N-doped carbon network improves electron transport performance, enabling catalyst's charge transfer resistance decline to 19.9 Ω. Moreover, dual stabilization mechanisms of Fe–O–V stable structure and chemical anchoring of V–O–C bonds endow the material with good structural stability under alkaline conditions. In detail, N–V 2 O 5 @FeC reaches 10 mA cm −2 current density at only 299 mV overpotential in alkaline solution, with low Tafel slope (53.0 mV dec −1 ) and 50-h stability.

Nickel-rich layered oxide materials, specifically LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 or NCM811, exhibit exceptional theoretical energy densities, rendering them highly suitable for applications demanding high energy outputs. Their superior specific capacity is a key factor contributing to this suitability. However, the unstable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) formed on nickel-rich materials during cycling degrades battery performance by consuming active lithium ions. Stable CEI formation is crucial for improving electrochemical stability. In this study, a novel NO 2 -functionalized methyl benzoate-containing reagent (Methyl 5-Nitro-2-Methylbenzoate MNM) was introduced into a conventional carbonate electrolyte. This combination promoted the in-situ formation of a stable, ion-conductive CEI on the NCM811 electrode. The assembled NCM811||Li battery exhibited excellent cycling stability, delivering a discharge capacity of 163.01 mAh g⁻¹ and maintaining 90.82% of its original capacity after 100 cycles at a 1 C rate. Moreover, at a higher charge/discharge rate of 7 C, the battery maintained a specific capacity of 136.70 mAh g⁻¹. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that MNM additives enhanced the conversion of FEC into LiF and Li₃N, improving the CEI membrane’s stability and ion transport. This study presents a novel strategy for designing highly stable electrolyte systems that exhibit ion conductivity, optimized for use in applications with high energy density requirements. A tannate-iron network-derived peroxidase-like catalyst loaded with Fe ions on carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) was reported for detection of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in food in this study. Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) was employed to form a low coordination compound on C 3 N 4 , and calcined catalyst formed hollow structure with abundant and uniform Fe sites and surface folds. CN-FeC exhibited significant peroxidase-like activity and high substrate affinity. The homogeneous distribution of amorphous Fe elements on the C 3 N 4 substrate provides more active sites, resulting in provided excellent catalytic activity to activate H 2 O 2 to 1 O 2 and O 2 ·– . The established CN-FeC/TMB/H 2 O 2 colorimetric system can detect AA in the concentration range of 5-40 μM, with the detection limits of 1.40 μM, respectively. It has good accuracy for the detection of vitamin C tablets, beverages. Taken together, this work shows that metal-phenolic networks can be an effective way to achieve efficient utilization of metal atoms and provides a promising idea for metal-phenolic networks in nanoparticle enzyme performance enhancement.

Polyanionic structures, (MO4)n−,can be beneficial to the transport of lithium ions by virtue of the open three-dimensional frame structure. However, an unstable interface suppresses the life of the (MO4)n−-based anode. In this study, MnWO4@C nanorods with dense nanocavities have been synthesized through a hydrothermal route, followed by a chemical deposition method. As a result, the MnWO4@C anode exhibits better cycle and rate performance than MnWO4as a Li-ion battery; the capacity is maintained at 718 mAh g−1at 1000 mA g−1after 400 cycles because the transport of lithium ions and the contribution of pseudo-capacitance are increased. Generally, benefiting from the carbon shell and electrolyte additive (e.g., FEC), the cycle performance of the MnWO4@C electrode is also effectively improved for lithium storage.

Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) are promising systems for improving the high-voltage performance and interfacial stability of lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). Unfortunately, they are always challenged by liquid–liquid phase separation during solution preparation. Further investigation is always required when the prepared electrolyte has encountered liquid–liquid phase separation previously. Here, we propose a “cognate cosolvent” strategy to mediate phase-separated LiBF4/fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC)|ethyl trifluoroacetate (TFAE) mixtures with ethyl acetate (EA), forming effective LiBF4/FEC/EA/TFAE-based LHCEs (B-LHCEs). Because of their unique solvation structure, the B-LHCEs exhibit high oxidative stability, facilitating Li+transport. The optimized B-LHCEs help single-crystal LiMn0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2/Li batteries form robust interphases, improving interfacial stability. As a result, distinct performance can be obtained (4.5 V, 500 cycles, ~90%, 1400, ~70%; 25 C, 128 mAh g−1, 4.7 V, 500, 82.5%). This work turns the “impossible” into an “effective” high-voltage electrolyte design, transcending the previous paradigms of electrolyte investigation and enriching LHCE preparation research.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES), as a flame-retardant electrolyte system, have the merit of high ionic conductivity and low preparation cost. However, the poor compatibility of DES-based electrolyte with Li metal anode has seriously restricted its prospects for applications. To solve this problem, a novel DES-based gel electrolyte (DSA) has been prepared by the polymerization of SSH monomer with 4-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) in the DES solution with/without an additive of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) under UV-irradiation, in which SSH monomer is synthesized by the reaction of cystine reagent with 2-isocyanethyl methacrylate ester. The impact of FEC additive on the performance of DSA electrolyte has been investigated in detail. Owing to the presence of urea-based hydrogen bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds in the SSH-ACMO gelling agent, DSA electrolyte with good mechanical properties exhibits an excellent self-repair capability at room temperature. Because of promoting the formation of SEI layer on Li metal anode, the incorporation of FEC additives could significantly improve the electrochemical performance of DSA electrolyte. The experimental results show that the as-prepared DSA-2 electrolyte sample presents high ionic conductivity of 0.85 mS cm−1 at room temperature, broad electrochemical window of 4.5 V, good non-flammability and stable interfacial characteristics.

Succinonitrile (SN) electrolyte is emerging as an ideal candidate for solid-state electrolytes due to its high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and low cost. However, severe side reactions with lithium metal and poor mechanical strength have significantly hindered the rapid development of SN-based electrolytes. In this study, an in situ thermal polymerization technique was employed to integrate SN with cross-linked poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), yielding a composite solid electrolyte that combines high ionic conductivity with excellent mechanical properties. The optimized SN-PMMA50 electrolyte achieves a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 2.95 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , an electrochemical stability window of 4.75 V, a lithium-ion transference number of 0.68, and a tensile strength of 165 MPa. Furthermore, the introduction of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)-forming additive significantly suppresses the side reactions between SN and the lithium anode. The optimized SN-PMMA50-FEC30 composite electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and cycling stability. The assembled Li/LiFePO 4 solid-state battery retains 96% capacity after 200 cycles at room temperature. The incorporation of PMMA and FEC markedly enhances the mechanical properties of the electrolyte and the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface, which provides a highly promising strategy for the application of SN-based polymer electrolytes in lithium metal batteries.

Lithium metal is recognized as the next generation anode material due to its ultra-high capacity. However, the safety hazards caused by the dendritic lithium growth hinder its practical application. In this work, rare earth nitrates, such as Y(NO 3 ) 3 , are introduced as electrolyte additives because of the unfixed coordination number and complex coordination configuration for rare earth cations. Molecular dynamics simulation reveals that the rare earth ion changes the solvation structure of the lithium ion. When it is combined with fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), the interphase generated from electrochemical reactions is favorable for the dense Li deposition. As a result, a stable and high Coulombic efficiency is achieved for Li/Cu cells in commercial carbonate electrolyte with such additive. The Li/Li symmetrical cells can operate>1000 h at current density of 1 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the NCM811/Li full cells deliver superior cycling stability and better rate performance. This strategy sheds light on utilizing rare earth elements to optimize the electrolyte for lithium metal anode and it can be extended to other electrolytes aiming at sodium and potassium battery chemistry.

An in situ polymerization strategy is regarded as a promising approach to fabricate gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) and improve interface contact between the electrolyte and electrodes, in which the initiator is initially dissolved in the precursor solution. Herein, aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate (Al(OTf)3) is preloaded onto a separator sheet as the initiator to trigger the ring-opening reaction of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL). The polymer matrix near the separator has a higher crystallization degree than that far away from the separator. Fluoroethyl carbonate (FEC) is further introduced as a liquid plasticizer to produce an amorphous GPE for enhanced ionic conductivity and interfacial stability. As a result, the as-synthesized FEC based GPE exhibits a substantial ionic conductivity of 1.5 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature, an expanded electrochemical window of 4.8 V, and a high Li+ transference number of 0.63. The symmetric Li|Li cell exhibits a stable lifespan for 650 h at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mA h cm−2. Moreover, the LiFePO4 full cell exhibits stable cycling for 300 cycles at 1C with a capacity retention of 94.5%. This work provides a novel idea for the in situ synthesis of advanced GPEs toward practical application of solid-state lithium metal batteries.
