Herein, a nanocomposite of Cu,Ce-containing phosphotungstates (Cu,Ce-PTs) with outstanding laccase-like activity was fabricated via a one-pot microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Notably, it was discovered that both Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ could significantly enhance the electron transfer rates of Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ , along with generous Cu 2+ with high catalytic activity, thereby promoting the laccase-like activity of Cu,Ce-PTs. The proposed system can be used for the detection of Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ in a range of 0.667–333.33 μg/mL and 0.033–33.33 μg/mL with a low detection limit of 0.135 μg/mL and 0.0288 μg/mL, respectively. The proposed assay exhibits excellent reusability and selectivity and can be used in traditional Chinese medicine samples analysis.

The development of green and highly efficient antimicrobial filter membranes for water disinfection is crucial to public health. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), an emerging bactericidal strategy, has shown significant potential for the preparation of antimicrobial filter membranes. Unfortunately, its antibacterial efficacy is often compromised by self-quenching caused by the aggregation of photosensitizers, as well as the short diffusion length and lifespan of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated. Herein, a Fe(Ⅲ)-coordinated cross-linked antibiofouling cellulose composite membrane (Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5) with significantly enhanced synergistic photodynamic and Fenton-like bactericidal performance was fabricated via a facile flow-based sequential filtration method for water disinfection. The formation of a Fe(Ⅲ)-coordinated cross-link increases the structural stability of the membrane, prevents the migration and aggregation of tetra(4-carboxyphenoxy)-phthalocyaninatozinc (ii) (TPZnPc), and also provides the Fe(Ⅲ) complexes for the accelerated Fenton-like reaction. Through synergistic photodynamic and Fenton-like reactions, the Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5 membrane achieves rapid and effective inactivation for E. coli and B. subtilis with a lethality rate of 100 % under NIR irradiation and H 2 O 2 treatment. The primary active species responsible for bacterial inactivation are singlet oxygen species ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH). The disinfection performance of the Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5 membrane in river water samples demonstrated 100 % disinfection efficiency for waterborne pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5 membrane exhibits moderate water permeance (26.6 L m −2 h −1 ), high bacteria rejection (>96 %), excellent antifouling ability, and 100 % biodegradation within 90 days. These attributes indicate significant potential for the practical application of this composite membrane in water purification.

Single atom nanomaterials possess catalytic activity like natural enzymes are termed as SAzymes which have gained great attention during last two years because of the maximal utilization of atoms and the benefit of understanding structure-property relationship. However, most of SAzymes are fabricated based on hydrophobic carbon, which disperse poorly in water and exhibit inferior affinity towards substrates, which may limit their biomedical applications. Here, we report a peroxidase-like SAzyme through the post-modification route based on hydrophilic defective metal-organic frameworks. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is employed as ligand modulator to fabricate defective NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles (HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs). Compared with the NPs fabricated through acetic acid modulation method (Ac-NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs), HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs have more missing linkers. Hence, more Fe(Ⅲ) ions can be successfully doped onto Zr 6 clusters in HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs in a single atom state via formation of Fe–O–Zr bridge. The HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs doped with Fe(Ⅲ) ions (Fe–HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs) possess higher peroxidase-like activity than Fe-Ac-NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs due to the higher loading amount of Fe. Besides, both Fe–HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs and Fe-Ac-NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs exhibit lower Michaelis-Menten constants (K m ) for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) than most reported nanomaterials, indicating their higher affinity to H 2 O 2 . Due to their excellent catalytic activity to low concentration of substrates, Fe–HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs can detect H 2 O 2 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 μM. Thus, our system can be used to detect the low cellular H 2 O 2 concentration. With high peroxidase-like activity induced by plenty of single atom Fe(Ⅲ) sites, Fe–HCl–NH 2 -UiO-66 NPs can also find wide applications in other fields including nanomedicine , pollution degradation and catalysis.

Developing a novel type of high-performance catalytic separation membrane with multifunctional remediation towards efficiently complex wastewater has been an anticipated goal. Inspired by the natural soil filtration system, we successfully constructed a soil-root-like Fe(Ⅲ)-MOF/AgNWs heterostructured membrane (AgNWs/CMC@NMB) with photo-fenton degradation property through a facile self-assembly approach under vacuum. Herein, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) acted as the root, which were boned with the soil-like of the nubbly NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) aggregation by electrostatic force and hydrogen bonding interaction to form a stable soil-like heterostructured membrane. The resultant AgNWs/CMC@NMB membrane revealed remarkable selective wettability (water contact angles (WCAs) ∼0°, underwater oil contact angles (UWOCAs) > 155°), and exhibited splendid removal efficiency (>99 %) for insoluble oils under separation flux of 1343 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Profiting from a soil-root-like porous filter structure, AgNWs/CMC@NMB membrane achieved concurrent treatment of the insoluble oils and soluble dyes by one-step efficient filtration, notably, the disposal efficiency for anionic and cationic dyes by soil-root-like structure reached above 96.7 %. Moreover, acting like roots in the soil to transport water and stabilize the soil, AgNWs facilitated electron transfer of the photo-Fenton system of Fe-MOF and enhanced the photocatalytic degradation capacity of composite membrane for the organic contaminant , which also endowed the photo-induced regeneration of fouled membrane. Overall, the construction of Fe(Ⅲ)-MOF/AgNWs composite membrane with a Soil-Root-like heterostructure emerged as a feasible route to achieve the complex sewage remediation.

Iron impurities are among the most detrimental impurities in magnesium electrolysis because they can promote cathode passivation, reduce current efficiency, and contribute to Mg loss. This study systematically investigated the electrochemical reduction of Fe(Ⅲ) and the corresponding cathode passivation mechanism in an anhydrous carnallite melt composed of MgCl₂ and KCl with a molar ratio of 1:1 at 973 K. Based on cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), chronoamperometry (CA), chronopotentiometry (CP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), the results show that Fe(Ⅲ) reduction is a single-step, diffusion-controlled, quasi-reversible process. Current reversal chronopotentiometry (CR-CP) measurements based on representative curves suggested a decrease in apparent current efficiency from 92.5% to 79.1% after 10 min of electrolysis. Morphological and electrochemical analyses further suggest the underlying passivation mechanism. During the initial stage of electrolysis, Fe(Ⅲ) is preferentially reduced and deposited on the cathode surface as a porous, sponge-like structure. The newly formed porous Fe deposits may adsorb MgO-containing species from the molten salt, suggesting the possible presence of an Fe/Mg/O-rich passivation layer on the cathode surface. Such a surface layer may reduce the wettability of the cathode toward liquid Mg and hinder the spreading and coalescence of Mg droplets, thereby promoting the deposition of Mg as fine, discrete, caviar-like particles with diameters below 1 mm. This process may contribute to Mg loss and the decrease in current efficiency during electrolysis. These findings provide fundamental insight into the role of Fe(Ⅲ) in cathode passivation during magnesium electrolysis.

The use of nanocrystal technology to manufacture drug delivery systems intended to enhance therapeutic efficacy has attracted the attention of the pharmaceutical industry. However, the clinical application of nanocrystal drugs for injection is restricted by Ostwald ripening and the large-scale use of stabilizers such as polysorbate and lecithin, which have potential toxicity risks including hemolysis and allergies. Here, we designed an amorphous nanocrystal drug complex (IHNC), which is stabilizer-free and composed of indocyanine green (ICG) framework loading with a chemotherapeutic agent of 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT). Considering the possibility of industrial manufacturing, IHNC was simply prepared with the assistance of ferric ion (III) via supramolecular assembly strategy. The theoretical result of Materials Studio simulation indicated that the prepared ICG-Fe(III) framework showed a stable spherical structure with the appropriate cavity for encapsulating the two drugs of HCPT and ICG with equal mass ratio. The IHNC was stable at physiological pH, with excellent PTT/PDT efficacy, and in vivo probing characteristics. The nanoscale size and reductive stimuli-responsiveness can be conducive to drug accumulation into the tumor site and rapid unloading of cargo. Moreover, such combination therapy showed synergistic photo/chemotherapy effect against 4T1 breast cancer and its tumor inhibition rate even up to 79.4%. These findings demonstrated that the nanocrystal drug delivery strategy could avoid the use of stabilizers and provide a new strategy for drug delivery for combination therapy.

Iron deficiency is the utmost critical problem of nutrition worldwide. Polysaccharide-iron chelate is a promising iron supplementation that exhibits good stability, high absorption rate, and fewer adverse reactions, but it still owns drawbacks of extra energy and lower iron content with respect to inorganic ones. Carboxylated polysaccharide-iron has been proven with enhanced iron content, however with poor aqueous solubility. Here, Fe 3+ concentrations controlled highly soluble carboxylated inulin-iron chelates were synthesized to promote the sustained release and efficient supplement of iron with no extra energy. Inulin, soluble dietary fiber, was initially reacted with succinic anhydride (SA) to get carboxylated inulin (IN-SA) consequently enhancing the complexing ability of Fe 3+ and its bioavailability. Interestingly, the aqueous solubility of the IN-SA-iron chelate (IN-SA-Fe) directly correlated with the Fe 3+ concentrations. Relatively higher or lower Fe 3+ concentrations resulted in highly soluble IN-SA-Fe, otherwise, leading to insolubility precipitates. The possible mechanism was proposed as the polymerization reaction of IN-SA in different degrees with Fe 3+ acting as the cross-linker. Moreover, IN-SA-Fe was demonstrated with properties of sustained slow-release of iron in artificial gastric juice and good in vivo biosafety. This work provides a simple, efficient, no extra energy soluble iron supplement for the treatment of iron deficiency.

Citric acid (CA) can effectively complex with Fe(Ⅲ) to improve the solubility of Fe(Ⅲ) and accelerate the reduction of Fe(Ⅲ) to Fe(II), while its use in Fe(Ⅲ)-activated peracetic acid (PAA) system has not been reported so far. Therefore, CA was introduced into Fe(Ⅲ)/PAA system in this study to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC), and the degradation efficiency and mechanism of OTC in this system were systematically investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of OTC in Fe(Ⅲ)-CA/PAA system at pH 7.0 could reach 81.5% after 20 min, and the degradation of OTC followed pseudo-first-order kinetic. The addition of CA into Fe(Ⅲ)/PAA system could effectively reduce Fe(Ⅲ) to Fe(Ⅱ) driving the cycle of Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) and accordingly enhance the OTC removal in this system. According to the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and scavenging experiments, hydroxyl radical (HO • ) and organic radicals (CH 3 C(O)O • and CH 3 C(O)OO • ) played major roles for the degradation of OTC in Fe(Ⅲ)-CA/PAA system. Four possible transformation paths of OTC in this system were proposed, including demethylation, hydroxylation, dehydrogenation and dehydration, based on five detected degradation products . This study provides an idea to improve PAA activation by Fe(Ⅲ) and broadens the practical application of Fe(Ⅲ) in advanced oxidation processes .

This study developed a self-supported MOF/FeOOH heterojunction cathode without binders for boosted Fe(Ⅲ) reduction in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) processes. The electron transport channels from FeOOH to in-situ grown NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) were established through the spontaneous formation of an internal electric field (IEF), which enhanced the electrical conductivity and disrupted the chemical inertness of the Fe(Ⅲ) reduction. The MOF/FeOOH cathode increased sulfamethazine (SMT) removal up to 95.76 %, 2.5 times better than using PTFE as binders. After ten-consecutive degradation experiments, the Fe(Ⅱ) content at cathode surface increased from 39.23 % to 56.73 %. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and advanced characterization techniques demonstrated the efficient Fe(Ⅲ) reduction and H 2 O 2 activation during the reaction. These results elucidate the promoting effect of modulating the “contact” between the catalyst and current collectors, as to provide a feasible and promising strategy for the development of efficient heterogeneous EF cathodes.

Fluorescent film sensors are ideal for the real-time outdoor detection of heavy metal ions of Fe3+, but they are limited because of their low sensitivity and long response time due to their special structure. In this work, we constructed a fluorescent hydrogel for the specific detection of Fe3+, utilizing poly(9-fluorenecarboxylic acid) (PFCA) as the sensing moiety and sodium alginate (SA) as the cross-linking substrate, which exhibited a rapid and selective recognition of Fe3+among a panel of 16 anions and 21 cations. It can sense Fe3+at 0.1 nM immediately owing to the porous network structure of thePFCA-SAfilm that provided enhanced ion transport channels and active sites, and the “molecular line effect” of polymer PFCA. Moreover, we successfully applied this platform to detect Fe3+in four different vegetable samples. This work provides an innovative and effective strategy for fabricating green and sustainable fluorescent sensors.

To further investigate the synergistic effects of Fe (Ⅲ) and graphene derivatives with varying degrees of oxidation for photocatalysis, commercial titanium dioxide nanoparticles and graphene oxide were employed as precursors to synthesize the catalyst in this study. Graphene oxygenated derivatives and Fe (Ⅲ)-modified titanium dioxide photocatalysts with different oxidation degrees were prepared using a simple one-step solvothermal method. The results demonstrated that the photocatalytic performance in degrading rhodamine B and sulfamethoxazole was enhanced with an increase in the oxidation degrees of graphene materials. Through the combined action of delocalized conjugated π electrons as electron transfer mediators, Fe (Ⅲ) as an electron trap, and photosensitization reactions, titanium dioxide exhibited exceptional photocatalytic properties with the assistance of graphene derivatives and Fe (Ⅲ) co-catalysts in the degradation of organic compounds. We developed a distinctive and straightforward method for fabricating graphene oxide and Fe(III) co-modified titanium dioxide catalysts. The quantity of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of graphene oxide precursors was controlled through thermal reduction. The synergistic impact of graphene derivatives and Fe (III) dual co-catalysts was further enhanced.

This study addresses the selectivity challenge in the flotation separation of fine cassiterite from calcium-containing gangue minerals, particularly calcite, by developing a Fe 3 + -CMC depressant system. Micro-flotation tests demonstrated that this system significantly improved separation efficiency: compared to using CMC alone, the SnO 2 recovery increased by 54.23–85.79 % (at a grade of 85.63 %), while the calcite recovery was depressed to 11.66 % (a reduction of 3.36 percentage points). The mechanism was systematically elucidated through contact angle measurements, solution chemistry calculations, surface characterization (Zeta potential, FTIR, XPS, AFM), and theoretical simulations (MD, DFT). The results indicate that Fe³ ⁺ mainly exists as Fe(OH)₃ in the pulp, which adsorbs on the cassiterite surface via hydroxyl groups and on the calcite surface through oxygen sites in CO₃²⁻. CMC consumes Fe³ ⁺ adsorbed on the cassiterite surface, while Fe³ ⁺ on the calcite surface provides additional adsorption sites for CMC, thereby enhancing its selective coverage. The stable Fe(OH)₃-CMC configuration promotes multilayer adsorption, effectively increasing cassiterite recovery while depressing calcite. This strategy, leveraging the synergistic effect of metal ion pretreatment and an organic depressant, offers a feasible approach for the efficient beneficiation of complex tin ores.
