Synergistic photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by Fe(II)/PMS and g-C3N5/BiVO4 S-scheme heterojunction: Mechanism and performance

Liu Ouyang,Huihu Wang,Lizhong Duan,Jingle Zhang,Shenghao Jiang,Yu Xiong,Chenhuinan Wei,Xing Xiang,Yun Zhao,Qianyu Wang

Tetracycline (TC), a widely detected aquatic pollutant, poses significant ecological risks, necessitating the development of effective remediation strategies. Photocatalytic degradation, which converts TC into harmless CO 2 and H 2 O, offers a promising eco-friendly solution. This study successfully synthesized a novel 2D/3D g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 (N-CN/BiVO 4 ) S-scheme heterojunction via a hydrothermal method. The optimized 5 % N-CN/BiVO 4 exhibited exceptional performance in activating the Fe 2+ /PMS system under visible light, achieving a 96.8 % TC removal efficiency with an apparent rate constant 4.4 times higher than that of BiVO 4 . Mechanistic studies, including ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS), confirmed the S-scheme interfacial charge transfer pathway. Furthermore, radical quenching experiments revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity originated from the synergistic contribution of multiple reactive species ( OH, SO 4 − , O 2 − , h + , and 1 O 2 ), validating both the efficient activation of Fe 2+ /PMS and the proposed S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This work presents an innovative approach for high-performance pollutant degradation by coupling an S-scheme heterojunction with the Fe 2+ /PMS activation system.

UV absorbance and electron donating capacity as surrogate parameters to indicate the abatement of micropollutants during the oxidation of Fe(II)/PMS and Mn(II)/NTA/PMS

Wen Qin,Jianshan Peng,Jingru Yang,Yang Song,Jun Ma

In this study, the relative residual UV absorbance (UV 254 ) and/or electron donating capacity (EDC) was investigated as a surrogate parameter to evaluate the abatement of micropollutants during the Fe(II)/PMS and Mn(II)/NTA/PMS processes. In the Fe(II)/PMS process, due to the generation of SO 4 •- and •OH at acidic pH, UV 254 and EDC abatement was greater at pH 5. In the Mn(II)/NTA/PMS process, UV 254 abatement was greater at pH 7 and 9, while EDC abatement was greater at pH 5 and 7. This was attributed to the fact that MnO 2 was formed at alkaline pH to remove UV 254 by coagulation, and manganese intermediates (Mn(V)) were formed at acidic pH to remove EDC via electron transfer . Due to the strong oxidation capacity of SO 4 •- , •OH and Mn(V), the abatement of micropollutants increased with increasing dosages of oxidant in different waters in both processes. In the Fe(II)/PMS and Mn(II)/NTA/PMS processes, except for nitrobenzene (∼23% and 40%, respectively), the removal of other micropollutants was greater than 70% when the oxidant dosages were greater in different waters. The linear relationship between the relative residual UV 254 , EDC and the removal of micropollutants was established in different waters, showing a one-phase or two-phase linear relationship. The differences of the slopes for one-phase linear correlation in the Fe(II)/PMS process (micropollutant-UV 254 : 0.36–2.89, micropollutant-EDC: 0.26–1.75) were less than that in the Mn(II)/NTA/PMS process (micropollutant-UV 254 : 0.40–13.16, micropollutant-EDC: 0.51–8.39). Overall, these results suggest that the relative residual UV 254 and EDC could truly reflect the removal of micropollutants during the Fe(II)/PMS and Mn(II)/NTA/PMS processes.

Importance of reagent addition order in contaminant degradation in an Fe(II)/PMS system

Ying Huang,Zhaohui Wang,Changling Fang,Wenqian Liu,Xiaoyi Lou,Jianshe Liu

Addition order of reagents in the Acid Orange 7 (AO7) degradation process was investigated by varying the concentration of Fe(II), the Fe(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) molar ratio and stepwise addition of Fe(II) and PMS. The importance of addition order of reagents was confirmed and an order of Fe(II)–PMS to improve the oxidation efficiency was recommended.

Pivotal roles of MoS2 in boosting catalytic degradation of aqueous organic pollutants by Fe(II)/PMS

Bo Sheng,Fei Yang,Yihao Wang,Zhaohui Wang,Qian Li,Yaoguang Guo,Xiaoyi Lou,Jianshe Liu

Despite the success of Fe(II)/peroxymonsulfate (PMS) process in detoxifying organic pollutants, its intrinsic drawback of sluggish Fe(III) conversion to Fe(II) limits its large-scale practical application. Here we report that commercial MoS 2 , a common metal sulfide, can be used to unlock this kinetic constrain. Addition of MoS 2 greatly accelerates the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), decomposition of PMS, and thus results in enhanced degradation efficiency of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) (>95%) and other biorefractory halogenated organic compounds within 30 min. Mass spectroscopy data indicate that TCP can be destructed into low-molecular-weight organic acids, manifesting its powerful oxidation capacity of MoS 2 -assisted Fe(II)/PMS process. Once the Fe(III) in aqueous solution is stabilized by its organic or inorganic ligands, the boosting effects of MoS 2 are largely inhibited and less than 80% of TCP is degraded. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals are identified as the dominant reactive oxidants in the MoS 2 /Fe(II)/PMS process by radical scavenging tests. The unsaturated S on the fresh MoS 2 surface and the exposed Mo(IV) sites are supposed to react with PMS and Fe(III) in the aqueous solution, respectively. No iron oxides and Mo oxides are detected in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurement, indicating the accelerated Fe(II)/PMS process mainly occurs in the homogeneous solution. MoS 2 exhibits excellent recyclability and sustainable reactivity for the degradation of TCP after 5 consecutive runs. Overall, the present study provides a novel strategy to overcome the rate-limiting step of Fe(III)/Fe(II) that is commonly challenging Fe-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and enable Fe(II)/PMS as efficient as typical Co(II)/PMS.

Ferrous-activated peroxymonosulfate oxidation of antimicrobial agent sulfaquinoxaline and structurally related compounds in aqueous solution: kinetics, products, and transformation pathways

Ji Yuefei,Wang Lu,Jiang Mengdi,Yang Yan,Yang Peizeng,Lu Junhe,Ferronato Corinne,Chovelon Jean-Marc

Sulfaquinoxaline (SQX) is a coccidiostatic drug widely used in poultry and swine production and has been frequently detected in various environmental compartments such as surface water, groundwater, soils, and sediments. In the present study, degradation of SQX by ferrous ion-activated peroxymonosulfate oxidation process (Fe(II)/PMS), a promising in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technique, was systematically investigated. Experimental results showed that Fe(II)/PMS process appeared to be more efficient for SQX removal relative to Fe(II)/persulfate process (Fe(II)/PS). An optimal Fe(II):PMS molar ratio of 1:1 was found to be necessary for efficient removal of SQX. Increasing the solution pH hampered the degradation of SQX, and no enhancement in SQX degradation was observed when chelating agents S,S′ -ethylenediamine- N,N′ -disuccinic acid (EDDS) and citrate were present. The presence of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA), as a representative of aquatic natural organic matter (NOM), could inhibit the degradation of SQX. SQX was more susceptible to Fe(II)/PMS oxidation in comparison to its substructural analog 2-amino-quinoxaline (2-AQ) and other sulfonamides, i.e., sulfapyridine (SPD) and sulfadiazine (SDZ). Transformation products of SQX were enriched by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and identified by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). On the basis of the TPs identified, detailed reaction pathways for SQX degradation including sulfonamide bond cleavage, SO 2 extrusion, and aniline moiety oxidation were proposed. Our contribution may provide some useful information for better understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of SQX degradation by sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

Effects of acid, acid-ZVI/PMS, Fe(II)/PMS and ZVI/PMS conditioning on the wastewater activated sludge (WAS) dewaterability and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)

Xiaoyang Fan,Yili Wang,Daxin Zhang,Yajie Guo,Shihui Gao,Enrui Li,Huaili Zheng

The effects of four conditioning approaches: Acid, Acid-zero-valent iron (ZVI)/peroxydisulfate (PMS), Fe(II)/PMS and ZVI/PMS, on wastewater activated sludge (WAS) dewatering and organics distribution in supernatant and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) layers were investigated. The highest reduction in bound water and the most WAS destruction was achieved by Acid-ZVI/PMS, and the optimum conditions were pH 3, ZVI dosage 0.15 g/g dry solid (DS), oxone dosage 0.07 g/g DS and reaction time 10.6 min with the reductions in capillary suction time (CST) and water content (Wc) as 19.67% and 8.49%, respectively. Four conditioning approaches could result in TOC increase in EPS layers and supernatant, and protein (PN) content in tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS). After conditioning, organics in EPS layers could migrate to supernatant. Polysaccharide (PS) was easier to migrate to supernatant than PN. In addition, Acid, Acid-ZVI/PMS or Fe(II)/PMS conditioning promoted the release of some polysaccharides containing ring vibrations v P O, v C-O-C, v C-O-P functional groups from TB-EPS. ESR spectra proved that both radicals of SO 4 - · and ·OH contributed to dewatering and organics transformation and migration. CST value of WAS positively correlated with the ratios of PN/PS in LB-EPS and total EPS, while it negatively correlated with TOC, PN content and PS content in TB-EPS, as well as PS content in supernatant and LB-EPS. BWC negatively correlated to zeta potential and TOC value, PN content, and HA content in supernatant.

Comparative study of Fe(II)/sulfite, Fe(II)/PDS and Fe(II)/PMS for p-arsanilic acid treatment: Efficient organic arsenic degradation and contrasting total arsenic removal

Yuan Gao,Yun Luo,Zhao Pan,Zhu Zeng,Wenxia Fan,Jingyu Hu,Zhong Zhang,Jinxing Ma,Yang Zhou,Jun Ma

As a widely used feed additives, p-arsanilic acid (p-AsA) frequently detected in the environment poses serious threats to aquatic ecology and water security due to its potential in releasing more toxic inorganic arsenic. In this work, the efficiency of Fe(II)/sulfite, Fe(II)/PDS and Fe(II)/PMS systems in p-AsA degradation and simultaneous arsenic removal was comparatively investigated for the first time. Efficient p-AsA abatement was achieved in theses Fe-based systems, while notable discrepancy in total arsenic removal was observed under identical acidic condition. By using chemical probing method, quenching experiments, isotopically labeled water experiments, p-AsA degradation was ascribed to the combined contribution of high-valent Fe(IV) and SO 4 •− in these Fe(II)-based system. In particular, the relative contribution of Fe(IV) and SO 4 •− in the Fe(II)/sulfite system was highly dependent on the molar ratio of [Fe(II)] and [sulfite]. Negligible arsenic removal was observed in the Fe(II)/sulfite and Fe(II)/PDS systems, while ∼80% arsenic was removed in the Fe(II)/PMS system under identical acidic condition. This interesting phenomenon was due to that ferric precipitation only occurred in the Fe(II)/PMS system. As(V) was further removed via adsorption onto the iron precipitate or the formation of ferric arsenate-sulfate compounds, which was confirmed by particle diameter measurements, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Through tuning solution pH, complete removal of total arsenic could achieve in all three systems. Among these three Fe-based technologies, the hybrid oxidation-coagulation Fe(II)/PMS system demonstrated potential superiority for arsenic immobilization by not requiring pH adjustment for coagulation and facilitating the in-situ generation of ferric arsenate-sulfate compounds with comparably low solubility levels like scorodite. These findings would deepen the understanding of these three Fe-based Fenton-like technologies for decontamination in water treatment.
