This paper systematically analyzed the effects of Fe(II) ions on the cassiterite surface to promote the adsorption of salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA). The interaction behavior and mechanisms re investigated using micro-flotation experiments, adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The micro-flotation tests revealed that the Fe(II) ions had a strong activation effect on the cassiterite, and the recovery reached the maximum at pH values of 7–8. The results of the adsorption experiment showed that the adsorption capacity of SHA on the mineral surface significantly improved after Fe (II) ion activation; this result was confirmed by the zeta potential test. In addition, the zeta potential results indicated that the positively charged Fe species absorbed on the cassiterite surface led to positive changes in the mineral surface potential and an increase in the number of active sites, thereby increasing the SHA adsorption. The XPS and FTIR results demonstrated that the Fe(II) ions activated the cassiterite through the interaction of terminal oxygen atoms with Fe species on the cassiterite surfaces, and redox reactions and displacement reactions occurred between Fe 2+ and Sn 4+ . SHA was chemisorbed on the cassiterite surface, allowing the anions to react readily with the Fe species to form Fe-SHA complexes. Therefore, the Fe(II) ion-activated cassiterite surfaces enhanced the strength and stability of the SHA chemisorption. Based on the results, an adsorption model of the Fe(II) ion-activated cassiterite surface in the SHA system was established.

“Turn-off” fluorescent sensors for Cr(VI) have been fabricated based on organic polymer-capped gold nanoparticles. The fluorescence intensity, as well as the response behavior of the sensors, is dependent on the pH values of buffer solution and dilution amounts of the sensors. When diluted 50 times with pH 2.0 buffer solution, the sensors show good linear responses toward Cr(VI) at concentrations between 2.8–5.9 μM and 5.9–29 μM. The calculated detection limit is 0.63 μM (S/N=3). The interference study and real sample assays exhibit satisfying selectivity and reliability results. Furthermore, the quenched intensity of fluorescence could be recovered by Fe(II) ion, which provides a potential method to detect Fe(II) ions. The quenching and recovering mechanisms have also been investigated. It is suggested that the quenching mechanism is based on the combined effects of internal electron transfer and the inner filter effect. Finally, the recovering mechanism is based on the redox reactions between the Cr(VI) and Fe(II) ions.

Due to the negligible bacterial resistance , chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is a promising treatment for bacterial infection. However, it is severely impeded by the constant body temperature, shortage of Fe(Ⅱ) ions and insufficient H 2 O 2 level in infected tissue. To enhance the therapeutic efficiency of CDT, improved strategies are urgently needed to tackle these problems. Herein, we exploited an infection microenvironment-responsive nanotherapeutics for near-infrared (NIR)/dihydroartemisinin (DHA) dual-augmented antibacterial CDT. The convenient encapsulation of DHA-loaded α-Fe 2 O 3 nanorods with metal-polyphenol networks (MPN) led to the generation of an antibacterial nanoagent Fe 2 O 3 @ [email protected] (FDM). Afterwards, its photothermal and peroxidase-like activities were intensively studied. Furthermore, the bactericidal efficacy of FDM was evaluated through both in vitro and in vivo antibacterial assays. Firstly, FDM showed both satisfactory photothermal and NIR/DHA dual-augmented peroxidase-like activities. Besides, it exhibited a pH-responsive release behavior of both Fe(Ⅱ) ions and DHA. Moreover, it presented tannic acid-mediated bacterial adhesion effect. In vitro experiments demonstrated that FDM could achieve a satisfactory efficiency against both planktonic bacteria and biofilms . In vivo assays illustrated both the extraordinary synergistic antibacterial effect and efficient anti-inflammatory ability of FDM. The outcomes indicated that the exploited antibacterial agent could offer new insight on developing intelligent nanotherapeutics for clinical use in the future. Statement of significance The antibacterial efficiency of chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is seriously limited by the constant body temperature, shortage of Fe(Ⅱ) ions and insufficient H 2 O 2 level at the mildly acidic inflammatory microenvironment. To address these issues, we have developed a pH-responsive nanoagent (Fe 2 O 3 @ [email protected] ) for near-infrared (NIR)/dihydroartemisinin (DHA) dual-augmented CDT. Through the NIR-induced photothermal effect of exterior Fe(Ⅲ)/tannic acid complex, the increased local temperature led to a photothermal enhanced CDT. Besides, a continuous supply of Fe(Ⅱ) ions could be achieved by tannic acid-mediated Fe(Ⅲ) reduction. Moreover, DHA was adopted as a substitute for H 2 O 2 to initiate DHA-mediated CDT. Both in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated its outstanding bactericidal efficiency. Therefore, the developed nanotherapeutics could be a promising candidate for clinical trials .

Using multifunctional nanocomposites for multiple therapeutic approaches has emerged as an innovative cancer treatment strategy. Chemotherapy and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) have many benefits for cancer therapy, in which have great significance to develop nanocomposites that enable chemotherapy/CDT combined treatment. Herein, in situ co-precipitation method was used to load curcumin (Cur) into layered double hydroxide (LDH). Then, the Cur/LDH was assembled with carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) through electrostatic adsorption. Acidic microenvironment–responsive nanocomposite (Cur/LDH/CNQDs) was constructed and used for tumor treatment. The as-synthesized Cur/LDH/CNQDs exhibits good biocompatibility and chemodynamic properties. In addition, the releases of Fe(II) ions (78%) and Cur (85%) are accelerated under acidic pH conditions that mimic the tumor microenvironment. The results show that the combination of chemotherapy and CDT can enhance its tumor-killing ability compared with single therapy. In essence, Cur/LDH/CNQDs shows a good effect in combined chemotherapy/CDT treatment of tumor cells and provide a promising alternative for combined tumor therapy.
