In light of the promising merits of large surface area, uniform pore size, and tunable functional groups, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential to be utilized for adsorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, three Fe-based MOFs, MIL-100(Fe), MIL-101(Fe), and MIL-53(Fe), were synthesized systematically and used to adsorb a typical VOC, toluene. Static adsorption, dynamic breakthrough curves , and adsorption kinetics were conducted to assess the adsorption performance. Additionally, the surface functional groups, pore structure, and morphology were systematically characterized by means of XRD , SEM, XPS, FTIR and N 2 adsorption-desorption analyses to reveal the cause of the difference in adsorption of these Fe-based MOFs. The results revealed that the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of 663 mg/g was achieved by MIL-100(Fe) with the highest specific surface area and pore volume. The dynamic adsorption of toluene on MIL-100(Fe) was in accordance with the pseudo-first order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model. The formed π-π stacking interaction between organic ligands and the benzene ring in the MIL-100(Fe) cluster is the primary adsorption mechanism based on XPS analysis. Moreover, MIL-100(Fe) was easily regenerated via microwave irradiation with a negligible adsorption capacity decrease after three cycles. This work highlights the feasibility of hierarchical porous Fe-based MOFs as toluene adsorbents and promotes the application of MOFs in the field of pollution control .

Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show high activity toward the activation of peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in wastewater treatment. However, there is a phenomenon of Fe ion dissolution in the Fe-based MOFs’ active PDS system, and the reasons and influencing factors that cause Fe ion dissolution are poorly understood. In this study, we synthesized four types of Fe-based MOFs and confirmed their crystal structure through characterization. All types of Fe-based MOFs were found to activate PDS and form sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ), which effectively remove OMPs in wastewater. During the process of Fe-based MOFs activating PDS for CIP removal, activated species, oxidant reagent, and pH negatively impact the stability performance of the MOFs’ structure. The coordination bond between Fe atom and O atom can be attacked by water molecules, free radicals, and H + , causing damage to the crystal structure of MOFs. Additionally, Fe (II)-MOFs exhibit the best stability performance, due to the enhanced bond energy of the coordination bond in MOFs by the F ligands. This study summarizes the influencing factors of Fe-based MOFs’ damage during PDS activation processes, providing new insights for the future development of Fe-based MOFs.

In this work, a Fe-based metal organic frameworks (MIL-88A) has been synthesized through a hydrothermal method and adopted as a high-efficiency catalyst for photocatalysis (PC) coupled with sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) under visible light irradiation. The effects of MIL-88A/persulfate (PS) molar ratio, initial solution pH and catalyst dosage were studied. The results indicated that the combining of the photocatalysis and SR-AOPs could remarkably enhance TC degradation and 200 mg/L 100 mL TC could be degraded completely at 0.25 g/L MIL-88A, unadjusted pH value and 4 mM PS in 80 mins. The results of scavenging experiments and ESR analysis demonstrated that SO 4 − • and •O 2– radicals were the predominant radicals for the TC degradation. The significant improvement of degradation rate in MIL-88A/PS/Vis process is attributed to the following two factors: (1) as a photocatalyst, MIL-88A could be excited by visible light, therefore photogenerated electrons (e − ) on the conduction band (CB) of MIL-88A could be trapped by PS to generate SO 4 − • radicals. In this process, PS acted as an electron acceptor and the electron/hole recombination was suppressed leading to the enhanced photocatalyst efficiency; (2) The PS can be activated not only by photoelectrons but also Fe (III) in MIL-88A leads to the generation of SO 4 − • radicals more rapidly and easily. A possible mechanism and degradation pathway for TC was proposed based on the trapping/ESR experiments and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. This work proposed a new idea and method in combining two oxidation processes in degradation of organic pollutants thus could be potentially used in environmental purification.

Controlling the spatial confinement effect and highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles (NPs) can help to improve applicability in catalysis, energy conversion, and separation. However, the nonspatial confinement effect, agglomeration of Pd NPs of catalyst and harsh reaction conditions have become the urgent problems to be solved in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Herein, we report the first application of a new MOFs@COFs by using core with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) and shell with covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for loading Pd NPs. The quickly formation of a transition state, the highly dispersed Pd NPs and the advancedly spatial confinement effect were achieved by coupling Fe base synergistic active components, electron-oriented anchoring with controlling pore scale, respectively. Most notably, as a proof-of-concept application, the high catalytic activity of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Pd@COFs( 3 + 3 ) in catalysis is elucidated for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction by the broad scope of the reactants and the preeminent yields of the products, together with excellent stability and recoverability. With this strategy, the mechanism of Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction was verified by examining the catalytic activity. We hope that our approach can further facilitate the study of the design and use of functional MOFs@Pd@COFs materials.

Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) for tumors due to their unique Fenton-like effects and porous and biodegradable nature. The adsorption and transport of small molecule drugs by their structure has attracted much attention. Herein, MnO2@NH2-MIL101(Fe)@Ce6-F127 nanoparticles (MNMCF NPs) were synthesized using a facile solvothermal strategy. The small molecule photosensitizer Ce6 was adsorbed by MOFs to improve the biocompatibility of Ce6 and give it high bioavailability when injected intravenously. When the MNMCF NPs reached the tumor site, Fe-based MOFs exhibited Fenton-like properties, producing ˙OH and showing CDT effects. MnO2 could specifically respond to produce O2 in a tumor microenvironment, thereby improving the tumor hypoxia state and enhancing the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) by Ce6. Both the in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the MNMCF-guided CDT/PDT combination therapy could effectively ablate tumors without the drawbacks of poor tolerability and potential long-term side effects. Therefore, the prepared MNMCF NPs can be used as promising candidates for synergistic CDT/PDT tumor therapy.
