The pyrolytic reforming of toluene to hydrogen and CNTs over the commercial and self-prepared Al 2 O 3 loaded with Fe through the impregnation method is investigated in a fixed bed reactor under the temperature from 600 °C to 800 °C. The physicochemical properties of Fe–Al 2 O 3 catalysts and Al 2 O 3 supports were characterized by XPS, H 2 -TPR, HRTEM and H 2 -pulse chemisorption . The reforming process over the catalyst of Fe loaded on self-prepared Al 2 O 3 gives the excellent H 2 yield of 27.8 mmol/(g-Fe) and graphite yield of 82.6 wt%, which is much higher than those from that over the catalyst of Fe loaded on the commercial Al 2 O 3 . It is evidenced by H 2 -pulse chemisorption that 5.1 % of Fe 0+ dispersion over the commercial Al 2 O 3 with mainly-exposed (110) facet while 11.2 % of Fe 0+ dispersion over self-prepared Al 2 O 3 with mainly-exposed (111) facet were obtained. The adsorption energy of iron cluster (Fe 4 ) with Al 2 O 3 (111) facet was estimated to be −14.5 eV through the DFT simulation, which is notably higher than that of iron cluster (Fe 4 ) with Al 2 O 3 (110) facet as −9.1 eV. With regard to the MD simulation along with XRD analysis of the Fe 3 C crystallite , Fe 0+ particles can be prominently molten at the high Fe 0+ dispersion over Al 2 O 3 facet, promoting the carbon solubility for the assembly of multi-wall CNTs without the deposition of unwanted amorphous carbon .

This research presents a regulation strategy of constructing a heterogeneous bilayer catalyst of Fe and Al2O3, namely, Fe–Al2O3, through interfacial interaction and particle nucleation, in order to modulate the size and catalytic activity of Fe sites and achieve the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Through temperature control, the noncatalytically active Fe2O3 clusters on the surface of Al2O3 are exposed, inducing multiple nucleation of Fe clusters on its surface. Under the synergistic effect of the confinement at the Fe–Al2O3 interface, the fabrication of small Fe nanoparticles is accomplished. The results indicate that the catalytically active Fe nanoparticles have a diameter of approximately 10 nm, and the grown CNTs have a diameter of approximately 15 nm. Based on the systematic characterization results, the nonactive Fe2O3 clusters confined by strong interfacial interaction induce multiple nucleation of Fe on their surface during multiple loading processes, facilitating the formation of nanoparticles. Additionally, the strong interaction between Al2O3 and Fe induces the formation of FeAl4O8, thereby enhancing the thermal stability of the nanoparticles. In conclusion, the targeted regulation of the interfacial interaction of the catalyst active sites offers guidance for the low-cost and large-scale preparation of small nanoparticle catalyst particles.

In this study, a series of high-efficient catalyst, Co–Fe/Al 2 O 3 , were synthesized via the sol-gel method for low-temperature phenol steam reforming (PSR). The optimized catalyst, 15Co–2Fe/Al 2 O 3 , exhibited a remarkable phenol conversion of 95.3%, a H 2 yield of 92.1% at 450 °C, GHSV = 7500 h −1 and a steam-to-carbon (S/C) ratio of 10. Furthermore, the catalyst activity was maintained for 660 min before a gradual decline was observed. The NH 3 -TPD analysis revealed that the addition of Fe enhanced the surface acidity of the catalyst, providing more active sites for phenol adsorption and activation. This study aims to address the challenges associated with high reaction temperatures and poor catalyst stability in PSR. Various characterization techniques have been employed to investigate the reaction mechanisms of bimetallic catalysts in low-temperature PSR.

Ni-Fe bimetallic catalysts demonstrate high catalytic activity and strong resistance to deactivation during biomass steam reforming (BSR). However, their activation and reaction with steam (H 2 O) are complex, and a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms is crucial for enhancing catalyst stability. This study systematically investigates the influence of H 2 O on the deactivation mechanisms of Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 catalysts, focusing on its dual role in modulating carbon deposition patterns and triggering metal particle sintering. Our experimental results reveal a paradoxical effect of steam: the introduction of H 2 O reduces the total amount of carbon deposits, it promotes the formation of structurally disordered carbon. Crucially, this disordered carbon is identified as the primary driver of catalyst deactivation. It not only physically blocks active sites but also accelerates the sintering of metal particles, leading to profound alterations of the catalyst’s surface architecture and a consequent loss of performance. Combining experimental results and DFT calculations, we reveal the energy barriers for carbon evolution and correlate them with catalytic stability. These insights provide a theoretical foundation for improving the deactivation resistance of the catalyst, controlling the structural type of carbon deposits, and optimizing the anti-sintering performance of the etallic catalysts.

This study demonstrates an innovative approach for green and efficient hydrogen production from seawater, utilizing Cu–Fe/Al 2 O 3 catalysts coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. The catalytic performance was systematically evaluated under varying voltages and Cu/Fe ratios in a DBD reactor to optimize hydrogen production efficiency. Subsequent investigations focused on humidity and gas flow rate effects using the optimal catalyst (Cu/Fe/Al 2 O 3 = 2:1:9). Multimodal characterization (XRD, XPS, FTIR, OES) combined with DFT calculations revealed the mechanistic role of Cu–Fe/Al 2 O 3 in plasma-driven hydrogen generation. The synergistic interaction between Fe and Cu enhanced hydroxyl/hydrogen radical generation through improved adsorption, thereby boosting hydrogen evolution efficiency and yield. The optimized system achieved a maximum hydrogen yield of 7.4 g/kWh at 3 kV operating voltage, 3 L/min argon flow, and 100% relative humidity, establishing an energy-efficient pathway for sustainable hydrogen production from seawater. In this work, efficient Fenton strategy have been proposed for degradation of shale gas fracturing flow-back wastewater using the spherical Fe/Al 2 O 3 supported catalyst. Prior to actual fracturing fluid treatment, the typical model wastewaters such as p -nitrophenol and polyacrylamide were employed to evaluate the catalytic properties of prepared catalyst, and then Fenton treatment of the shale gas fracturing flow-back wastewater was performed on the self-assembled catalytic degradation reactor for continuous flow purification. Results showed that under the conditions of 0.25 mol L −1 impregnating concentration, pH 4, 50 g L −1 catalyst and 0.75 mL L −1 30% H 2 O 2 , the removal efficiency of p -nitrophenol and polyacrylamide reached 74% and 61%, respectively, while the COD removal of fracturing flow-back fluid was approximately 48% with the residual 88 mg L −1 COD, meeting the emission standards of the integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB 8978-1996, COD < 100 mg L −1 ). This work offers new alternatives for Fenton treatment of real wastewater by efficient and low-cost supported catalysts.
