Optical assay using B-doped core–shell Fe@BC nanozyme for determination of alanine aminotransferase

Tian Dazhi,Xiang Wen,Wang Hao,Jiang Wentao,Li Ting,Yang Minghui

B-doped core–shell Fe@BC nanozyme was synthesized. The peroxidase (POD) like activity of Fe@BC nanozyme was studied and utilized for detecting the activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT). In the presence of ALT as well as ALT co-substrates l -alanine and α-ketoglutarate, l -glutamate is generated. The following catalytic oxidation of l -glutamate by glutamate oxidase leads to the generation of H 2 O 2 . The POD-like activity of Fe@BC can oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to oxTMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 , generating a blue-colored compound. Through the detection of the amount of H 2 O 2 generated, ALT activity can be determined through measuring the absorbance intensity variation at 450 nm. The limit of detection of the assay is 4 U/L, with a linear range from 10 to 1000 U/L. For human serum samples, the ALT levels determined by our assay are comparable to those determined by the hospital with a correlation coefficient of 0.991, demonstrating the reliability of our assay results. Uranyl separation from wastewater on the porous Fe-BC synthesized through coupling carbothermal reduction and ZnCl2 activation

Yirou Bai,Yu Chen,Ping Xue,Lei Wang,Zenghui Diao,Gang Song,Diyun Chen,Lingjun Kong

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been widely reported to attract uranium (U(VI)) from wastewater through surface adsorption and reduction. However, surface oxidation and agglomeration of nZVI significantly limited the application of nZVI in removing U(VI) from wastewater. In this study, a novel porous nZVI/BC composite (Fe 1 Zn 3 -BC(900)) was synthesized via a one-step process coupling carbothermal reduction and ZnCl 2 activation. In this process, ferric chloride and zinc chloride were employed as the Fe and Zn precursors, while starch was utilized as the biochar precursor. Zn and Fe were formed in the carbothermal reduction process. The Zn was sacrificed through evaporation to increase the porosity, providing sufficient inner space for well-dispersing the nZVI, what could be wrapped and protected by the porous carbon. Besides, the galvanic cell between the nZVI-C interface was formed, accelerating the electron transfer for reduction of U(VI) into U(IV). As expected, the Fe 1 Zn 3 -BC(900) performed a high efficiency of 94.3% for separating the U(VI) in an initial concentration of 10 mg/L within 30 min, confirming the positive effect of ZnCl 2 sacrifice on enhancing separation of U(VI) onto the Fe 1 Zn 3 -BC(900). The high uranium removal efficiency can be attributed to the fact that the enhanced porosity resulting from Zn evaporation facilitates U(VI) adsorption. The reduction of U(VI) is further facilitated by the high dispersion of nZVI and the formation of Fe/C galvanic cell. Therefore, this work has developed a promising method to address the agglomeration of nZVI in the separation of U(VI) from wastewater, which provides a new idea for the subsequent efficient uranium removal.

Rapid immobilization of arsenic in contaminated soils by microwave irradiation combined with magnetic biochar: Microwave-induced electron transfer for oxidation and immobilization of arsenic (III)

Dengcai Zhang,Junhao Lin,Juan Luo,Shichang Sun,Xi Zhang,Rui Ma,Juan Peng,Fei Ji,Shuaifei Zheng,Zhen Tian,Ning Ma

Biochar with adjustable redox activity is an effective strategy for immobilization of excess arsenic (As(III)) contaminated soil. However, biochar exhibits limitations in terms of electron transfer efficiency and immobilization efficiency due to insufficient activation energy. In this study, As(III) in the soil was rapidly immobilized by adding magnetic biochar (Fe-BC) and introducing microwave irradiation energy to enhance electron transport efficiency. The results showed that the pore structure and iron species (ZVI, Fe 3 O 4 ) loaded onto the biochar could be modulated by controlling the temperature and time of microwave pyrolysis, which enhanced the microwave absorption capacity and the immobilization performance of As. After adding Fe-BC (10 wt%) and treating with microwave irradiation for 3 h, the content of As(III) in the soil was reduced to 54.56 %. Compared with the conventional heating treatment, the percentage of stabilized As (residual form) increased by 11.21 %. The localized hot spots formed through the absorption of microwave energy by biochar promote the formation of arsenic-containing mineral crystals (FeAsO 4 and Fe 3 AsO 7 ), thus enhancing the immobilization efficiency. In addition, microwave-induced electron transfer facilitated the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) by surface quinone and carbonyl groups on the Fe-BC. Density functional theory calculation further proved that the surface groups of the Fe-BC had a stronger electron-withdrawing ability under microwave irradiation, thereby promoting the adsorption and immobilization of As(III). This work provided a new perspective on the technology of rapid remediation of heavy metals contaminated soil using biochar.

Magnetic spent coffee biochar (Fe-BC) activated peroxymonosulfate system for humic acid removal from water and membrane fouling mitigation

Yatong Li,Xinbo Zhang,Huu Hao Ngo,Wenshan Guo,Dan Zhang,Huizhong Wang,Tianwei Long

Applying membrane technology to water purification has been done for several decades now and is widespread. However, membrane fouling is a serious problem and continues to limit the success of membrane processes. In this study, magnetic biochar (Fe-BC) was prepared using easily available spent coffee grounds to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as a UF membrane pretreatment strategy. Results showed that the average removal rates of humic acid (HA, 10 mg/L) were 55.23 % and 73.55 %, at the Fe-BC dosage of 300 mg/L and PMS dosage of 300 mg/L and 900 mg/L, respectively. The Fe-BC/PMS pretreatment significantly reduced the total (44 %) and reversible (61 %) UF membrane fouling after five filtration cycles at a relatively high flux of 200 L/m 2 ·h, and the Fe-BC and PMS dosage of 100 mg/L. Modeling fit results indicated that pretreatment shifted complete blocking to standard blocking. Therefore, stopping HA-induced membrane fouling could be possible if the load is reduced and complete blocking alleviated.
