Carbonized resin with Fe&Co bimetal for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade atrazine

Liwei Yang,Yin Wei,Yaqi Peng,Yang Liu,Zhou Shu,Yansong Wang,Qingli Meng,Chuanliang Zhao,Hongmei Zhao,Fashan Yang,Bo Lai

Aiming at realizing heavy metal recycling and resource utilization, a carbon-based bimetallic material (Fe 1 Co 2 @C) was fabricated via calcining cationic resin exchanged with Fe and Co cations. It exhibited superior peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance to degrade atrazine (ATZ) compared with the monometallic materials (Fe@C and Co@C). Fe 1 Co 2 @C/PMS performed high degradation of 5 mg/L ATZ with the reaction rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.0869 min −1 within 30 min of reaction time. The effects of catalyst loading, PMS dosage, initial pH, and the presence of inorganic ions (NO 3 − , SO 4 2− Cl − , and HCO 3 − ) and natural organic matters (NOMs) were also investigated in this work. According to the radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), hydroxyl radical ( • OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 • − ) were identified to be the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for the ATZ degradation, especially • OH. What’s more, reaction mechanism of Fe 1 Co 2 @C was demonstrated that −(C− SO 3 ) x  − Co(II) and the synergy between Fe and Co on the surface could both promote the heterogeneous redox cycles of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) to activate PMS. Based on the detection results of intermediates by LC-MS, possible degradation pathways of ATZ included dealkylation, dichlorination, hydroxylation, and deamination-hydroxylation processes were proposed. This research not only provides new insights of PMS activation by carbon-based bimetallic catalyst for water treatment, but also proposes a new way for reusing the waste saturated cation resin waste with heavy metal.

Fe-Co bimetallic MOF-derived carbon directly application as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Jingchuan Guo,Yan Gao,Xuankai Cao,Xing Rong,Shidan Chi,Guolan Fan,Lei Zhang,Guohong Tian,Xudong Zhao

Hydrogen energy has attracted widespread attention as a high-energy–density, sustainable and clean energy source. Hydrogen production by electrolysis of water is a simple and efficient method of hydrogen production. However, most of the currently widely used commercial catalysts are expensive precious metals and their oxides. Therefore, it is necessary to develop low-cost, efficient and stable catalysts to promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry. Metal organic framework (MOF), as a new type of porous, high surface area material, has great potential in catalysis. Bimetallic MOF materials can further improve the catalytic activity of MOF materials as electrocatalysts by adjusting metal sites. In this paper, different proportions of Fe-Co bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the Fe-Co bimetallic carbon materials prepared by carbonization at high temperature were used as OER electrocatalyst, and the microstructure and electrochemical performance of the materials were analyzed and evaluated through microscopic mechanism characterization and electrochemical characterization. The test results show that Fe-Co bimetallic carbon materials have excellent electrocatalytic performance, Fe 2 Co/C and RuO 2 have the smallest high-frequency semicircles, and have the smallest internal charge transfer resistance. This indicates that Fe 2 Co/C has similar conductivity to RuO 2 . When the current density is 10 mA·cm −2 , Fe 2 Co/C has an overpotential of 335 mV, and when the current density is 50 mA·cm −2 , Fe 2 Co/C has an overpotential of 382 mV, and the oxygen evolution performance of Fe 2 Co/C is better than that of commercial precious metal catalyst RuO 2 at high current density. At the same time, its Tafel slope is only 58.8 mV·dec −1 , which is lower than that of RuO 2 catalyst, and it has a faster charge transfer rate. After CV cycles and 12 h of electrolysis by continuous chronoamperometry electrolysis, it exhibited excellent electrocatalytic stability.

High efficiency removal OBS using a novel Fe-Co co-modified biochar activated peroxymonosulfate: Synergistic effects of Fe and Co

Xiaolin Shi,Guo Yang,Bo Xing,Caiyi Jiang,Hangdao Qin,Min Li,Fuping Zhang,Yi Wang,Dongzheng Wang,Xingyong Liu

Fluorine-containing wastewater seriously threatens human health due to the wide application of sodium p -perfluorous nonenoxybenzenesulfonate (OBS). Herein, a novel Fe-Co bimetallic biochar (Fe-Co@BC) with abundant pore structure, functional groups and quickly electron transfer capability was prepared using hydrothermal method. Meanwhile, Fe-Co@BC-Ⅰ exhibited a superior catalytic capacity for degradation of OBS in PMS system, and the removal efficiency of OBS reached to 94.1 % within 60 min. After three cycles, the removal efficiency of OBS still up to 80 % and the Fe-Co had almost no leaching (Fe: 0.006 mg/L; Co: 0.023 mg/L). Further mechanistic insights were verified that high catalytic capacity and stability ascribed to the synergistic effects of Fe and Co, where Fe-Co mutual interaction promoted the formation of Fe 2+ and Co 2+ and accelerated electron transfer of catalyst. In addition, the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) proved that the degradation of OBS can be mainly ascribed to indirect oxidation of SO 4 −• , O 2 −• and •OH, and the possible degradation pathway of OBS was proposed in the Fe-Co@BC/PMS system. This study provides an insight into bimetallic prepared and activation PMS degradation fluorinated wastewater.

Selective Conversion of Stearic Acid over Phosphoric Acid-Activated Biochar Anchored Fe–Co Bimetallic Catalysts

Yongdie Zhao,Xiaohao Liu,Rui Diao,Dongxu Yan,Fenglei Qi,Peiyong Ma

Selective hydrogenation of fatty acids is an important method for the preparation of long-chain alkanes and fatty alcohols. Herein, a series of bimetallic catalysts with different Fe/Co ratios were prepared by using phosphoric acid-activated biochar as a support. The anchoring effect of P-containing functional groups in the support greatly improves the sintering resistance of the metals. The conversion pathway of stearic acid (SA) can be regulated by controlling Fe doping and the reduction temperature. The reduction of Fe1Co3/PAC at 400 °C can selectively regulate the hydrodeoxygenation pathway of SA. At 250 °C and 4 MPa, SA was almost completely converted to long-chain alkanes. Mechanism study shows that Fe doping increases the hydrogenation site CoO and dehydration site Fe–O–P in catalysts. However, by further increasing the reduction temperature, the metal phosphides formed in the catalyst can significantly enhance the dehydrogenation of octadecanol and decarbonylation of octadecaldehyde.

Preparation of Fe/Co bimetallic oxide loaded hydrophobic & catalytic bifunctional membrane and its catalytic performance in sulfite oxidation

Lijuan Feng,Jie Liu,Shizhao Wang,Yingying Zhao,Fei Li,Xiaofu Guo,Junsheng Yuan

Sulfite oxidation is critical for the stable operation of desulfurization process and the treatment & recovery of desulfurization by-products. The Fe and Co oxides modified super hydrophobic layer was prepared on tubular ceramic membranes using hydrothermal synthesis and surface modifications to realize the combination of the membrane catalysis and membrane aeration. These two oxides were approximately two-layer distributed on the membrane surface, among which the Fe 2 O 3 located in the bottom layer and the Co 3 O 4 located in the upper layer. The catalytic rate of the bifunctional membrane was about 5.8 times than that of the original ceramic membrane, which was decreased with the increasing of Fe/Co ratio and declined after an initial rise with the increase of urea and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The conjoint effect of Fe and Co could improve the catalytic performance and reduce the dissolution loss of catalyzer. The oxidation rate tended to be constant after a 15 % decrease in 7 times experiments.

Catalytic activation of PS/PMS over Fe-Co bimetallic oxides for phenol oxidation under alkaline conditions

Cong Wang,Jingyu Zhao,Congmei Chen,Ping Na

In this study, we compared the differences between bimetallic oxides FeCo 2 O 4 catalyzing the oxidation of phenol by peroxydisulfate (PS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under near neutral and alkaline conditions. Phenol could be completely oxidized and removed in both PMS and PS systems. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that there was a synergistic mechanism between Co and Fe on the catalyst surface. Although the PMS-FeCo 2 O 4 system reached the fastest reaction rate of 1.5 × 10 −1 min −1 , it showed a higher oxidants consumption and more residual total organic carbon (TOC) (36%) in solutions after reactions. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis showed that sulfate radical (SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) played important roles in the oxidation of phenol in PMS system. While in the PS-FeCo 2 O 4 system, in addition to free radical reactions, the non-radical mechanisms between PS and the catalyst surface played a major role in phenol oxidation, and the soluble organic matter in the PS system could be completely removed. Thus, PS has a better application prospect in the treatment of phenol. This discovery has certain guiding significance for catalyst modification and doping to improve catalyst activity and the choice of oxidant.

Fe-Co Co-Doped 1D@2D Carbon-Based Composite as an Efficient Catalyst for Zn–Air Batteries

Ziwei Deng,Wei Liu,Junyuan Zhang,Shuli Bai,Changyu Liu,Mengchen Zhang,Chao Peng,Xiaolong Xu,Jianbo Jia

A Fe-Co dual-metal co-doped N containing the carbon composite (FeCo-HNC) was prepared by adjusting the ratio of iron to cobalt as well as the pyrolysis temperature with the assistance of functionalized silica template. Fe1Co-HNC, which was formed with 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D carbon nanosheets including a rich mesoporous structure, exhibited outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activities. The ORR half-wave potential is 0.86 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), and the OER overpotential is 0.76 V at 10 mA cm−2with the Fe1Co-HNC catalyst. It also displayed superior performance in zinc–air batteries. This method provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of efficient transition metal-based carbon catalysts.

Fe, Co bimetal activated N-doped graphitic carbon layers as noble metal-free electrocatalysts for high-performance oxygen reduction reaction

Ce Han,Xiangjie Bo,Jian Liu,Mian Li,Ming Zhou,Liping Guo

In this work, a novel catalyst in form of Fe, Co bimetallic alloy activated N-doped graphitic carbon layers (NC/Fe 10-x Co x ) without metal core is rationally fabricated through a simple pyrolysis method and applied for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis. The NC/Fe 10-x Co x catalysts have exhibited superior electrocatalytic ORR performance comparable to commercial Pt/C via a four-electron pathway under the same loading in alkaline media with outstanding durability and complete methanol tolerance. The improvement of ORR performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe, Co bimetallic activation on nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon layers, rich pore structure and uniformly dispersed dopants in the carbon matrix.

Improvement of heterogeneous electro-Fenton oxidation of dimethyl phthalate by embedding Fe/Co bimetallic active sites into waste wine lees biochar

Shenbao Qu,Wenpei Guo,HongDi Mou,Ruyi Wang,Man Wei,Xia Hu

Phthalates (PAEs) are frequently detected in the water environment and pose a severe threat to the ecosystem and human health. Electro-Fenton technology is regarded as an effective approach to degrade PAEs; however, the preparation of inexpensive and efficient cathode materials has restricted its further application. In this study, Fe/Co bimetallic sites were incorporated into solid waste wine lees to synthesize highly active heterogeneous catalyst, and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) was chosen as the target pollutant to investigate the activity of the catalyst. Both the degradation of DMP and the removal of total organic carbon (TOC), the performance of Fe/Co co-modified biochar (FeCo@NOPC) is superior to that of Fe (Co) alone (Fe@NOPC/Co@NOPC) and modified biochar (NOPC). Under neutral conditions. Within 5 h, the DMP removal rate reached 89 % and TOC was reduced by approximately 40 %. The mechanism study reveals that the degradation of DMP is mainly attributed to the OH generated by the cathode, and the anodic oxidation and cathode adsorption only play minor roles. Finally, the degradation path of DMP was analyzed by LC-MS technique. This study offers a novel way to utilize solid waste and reduce the cost of heterogeneous electro-Fenton system.

Engineering the d-Orbital Electronic Delocalization of Atomic Fe–Co Dual-Metal Sites through Fe3C Nanoparticle Integration to Enhance Oxygen Reduction

Zizai Ma,Zihao Wan,Shuaili Zhao,Jinping Li,Jianping Du,Xiaoguang Wang

Bimetallic single-atom catalysts have garnered considerable interest in the field of the oxygen reduction reaction due to their unique electronic configurations and synergistic catalytic effects. However, precise modulation of d-orbital electron distribution at single-atom sites and comprehensive elucidation of the underlying catalytic mechanisms continue to present significant challenges. Herein, the FeCo(mlm)–N–C catalyst, integrating atomically dispersed Fe–Co dual-metal sites and Fe3C nanoparticles, was synthesized by using an encapsulation and ligand exchange strategy. Comprehensive analyses and theoretical simulations reveal that the incorporation of Fe3C nanoparticles induces significant d-orbital electron delocalization at the Fe active sites. This tailored electronic configuration effectively modulates Fe d–O p hybridization between the Fe active sites and adsorbed OH*. Consequently, it optimizes the occupancies of bonding and antibonding orbitals, thereby accelerating OH* desorption. This mechanism enables FeCo(mlm)–N–C to exhibit excellent catalytic performance and remarkable stability in both acidic and alkaline environments, while demonstrating superior activity in zinc-air batteries and proton exchange membrane fuel cells. This work not only presents a highly efficient non-noble metal electrocatalyst but also provides valuable insights into the rational development of advanced transition metal–nitrogen–carbon catalysts for energy-related applications.
