EFFICIENT REMOVAL OF NORFLOXACIN FROM WATER BY Fe-MOFs

Wei Fuhua,Ren Qinhui,Wang Nannan,Chen Hongliang,Zhang Yutao,Liang Zhao

The synthesis of Fe-MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) was conducted using a solution heat method, followed by characterization through XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and TG (thermogravimetry) analysis techniques. Subsequently, the Fe-MOFs were employed for norfloxacin removal. The experimental findings demonstrate that theoretical simulations of norfloxacin adsorption by Fe-MOFs involved the application of pseudo-first kinetic model, pseudo-second kinetic model, and adsorption isotherm. Chemisorption was identified as the primary mechanism observed. Notably, a maximum adsorption capacity of 197.7 mg g-1 was achieved at pH 10. These results underscore the practical feasibility of utilizing Fe-MOFs in applications related to norfloxacin adsorption.

Iodide-enhanced Co/Fe-MOFs nanozyme for sensitively colorimetric detection of H2S

Xiao-Lan Zhao,Jia-Li Liu,Fa-Ting Xie,Tong Yang,Rong Hu,Yun-Hui Yang

In this paper, a simple, rapid, and low-cost colorimetric method was designed based on Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide composite for the quantitative detection of H 2 S. It is know that iodide can improve the catalytic activity of bimetallic porous material Co/Fe-MOFs via adsorption into the framework of MOFs. Herein, we demonstrate a novel strategy to enhance the peroxidase-like activity of MOFs. Compared to horseradish peroxidase (HRP), the kinetic measurement results show that Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide exhibits excellent affinity to substrates, promoting electron transfer. Due to the synergetic effect of Co/Fe-MOFs and iodide, and rapid electron transfer process, Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide demonstrates improved peroxidase-like activity. As a proof-of-concept application, a novel, highly sensitive H 2 S colorimetric method is established with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.33 nM. In the absence of iodide, LOD is approx. 200-fold higher than that of the amplified colorimetric assay. The proposed method can also accurately detect traces of H 2 S in serum samples.

Target triggered cleavage effect of DNAzyme: Relying on Pd-Pt alloys functionalized Fe-MOFs for amplified detection of Pb2+

Yujie Yu,Chao Yu,Yazhen Niu,Jun Chen,Yilin Zhao,Yuchan Zhang,Rufei Gao,Junlin He

We designed an amplified detection strategy for the sensitive determination of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) based on a target-triggered nuclear acid cleavage of Pb 2+ -specific DNAzyme as a selectivity interface combined with Pd-Pt alloys modified Fe-MOFs (Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs) hybrids acting as the signal tag. Streptavidin modified reduced graphene oxide-tetraethylene pentamine-gold nanoparticles (rGO-TEPA-Au) served as a sensor platform for immobilizing more DNAzyme. In the presence of Pb 2+ , the substrate DNA strand can be specifically cleaved at the ribonucleotide site by DNAzyme to produce a new single-DNA on the interface. Then, the hairpin DNA with hybrid strand matched by its complement to the single-DNA was employed to modify the Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs bioconjugates for signal amplification . Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs catalyze hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to produce the electrochemical signal which was recorded by chronoamperometry . Benefiting from the Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme, the proposed method can selectively detect Pb 2+ in the presence of other metal ions . The newly designed biosensor exhibited a good linear relationship ranging from 0.005 to 1000   nmol   L −1 with a low detection limit of 2   pM (S/N = 3) for Pb 2+ . This Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme based ultrasensitive biosensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity, providing potential application for Pb 2+ detection in naturally contaminated sewage and spiked drinking water samples.

Effects and Mechanisms of Cu Species in Fe-MOFs on Fenton-Like Catalytic Activity and Stability

Mengzhen Song,Jingru Han,Yingzhi Wang,Lungang Chen,YanYan Chen,Xiaoyuan Liao

Fe-based MOFs (Fe-MOFs) are deemed promising Fenton-like catalysts due to their well-developed pores and accessible active sites. However, their inferior catalytic activity, iron leaching, and low H2O2 utilization always hinder their application as Fe-based MOF catalysts. In this work, we manipulated the structure of Fe-oxo nodes in MIL-88B(Fe) via a CuI species substitution method, affording a mixed-valence (Cu-incorporated Fe-MOFs) with highly improved Fenton-like performance. It is found that the CuI serves as a shuttle to promote transfer between FeII/FeIII, inducing the formation of a larger amount of stable FeII sites, which was proven by experimental and DFT calculation results. A linear relationship was observed for the Fenton-like performance and the amount of CuI species for the catalysts. The corresponding value of the •OH formation is 2.17 eV for Cu-incorporated MIL-88B(Fe), which is significantly lower than that of MIL-88B(Fe) (2.69 eV). Meanwhile, the enriched CuI species suppress Fe species leaching during the catalytic reaction. The Fe-ion leakage of 0.4Cu@MIL-88B is very tiny (0.01–0.03 mg/L), significantly less than that of MIL-88B (2.00–3.02 mg/L). At the same time, H2O2 utilization for 0.4Cu@ MIL-88B(Fe) is 88%, which is almost 4.4 times that of pure MIL-88B(Fe). This work provides insights into the rational design of Fe-MOFs as promising Fenton-like catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Construction of hexagonal spindle-shaped Fe-MOFs induced by cationic copolymer and its application for effective wastewater treatment

Zhang Yaping,Zhang Duoxin,He Yufeng,Wang Zeyuan,Song Pengfei,Wang Rongmin

The environment and human health are in danger due to the long-term enrichment and buildup of organic pesticides, dyes, and harmful microbes in wastewater. The development of functional materials that are efficient for treating wastewater remains a significant problem. Eco-friendly hexagonal spindle-shaped Fe-MOFs (Hs-FeMOFs) were created in this study under the influence of cationic copolymer (PMSt). The mechanism of crystal growth and development of its unique morphology were described after looking into impact factors for the ideal circumstances and being characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and other techniques. It revealed that Hs-FeMOFs possess an enormous supply of adsorption active sites, a strong electropositivity, and the nanometer tip. Then, typical organic pollutants, such as herbicides and mixed dyes, as well as biological pollutants bacteria, were chosen to assess its efficacy in wastewater treatment. It was discovered that the pendimethalin could be quickly removed in wastewater and the removal rate reached 100% within 10 min. In separation of mixed dyes, the retention rate of malachite green (MG) reached 92.3% in 5 min and with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.8 mg/mL and demonstrated strong activity due to the presence of cationic copolymers. In actual water matrix, Hs-FeMOF could also play excellent adsorption and antibacterial activity. In summary, a novel, environmentally friendly MOF material with good activity was successfully created by cationic copolymer induction. It offers a fresh approach to develop functional materials in wastewater treatment.

Analysis of microstructure properties of Ni-Fe MOFs and their influence on selective recognition of single and binary dye systems

Xu Dan,Cao Xiaolin,Zhou Jie,Lin Zhihao,Wang Jing,Han Jiatong,Chen Ge,Liu Guangyang,Xu Xiaomin,Zhang Yanguo,Xu Donghui

To address the environmental threats posed by dye pollution, it is crucial to develop adsorbents with high selectivity and adsorption capacity for the removal of chemical dye pollutants. In this study, five types of Ni/Fe-MOFs were synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method by varying the Ni/Fe molar ratio. Their physicochemical structures, surface morphologies, and compositions were characterized through a series of techniques, and their adsorption performances for different dyes were preliminarily investigated. The results demonstrated that the Ni/Fe ratio significantly affects the microstructure and adsorption performance of the MOFs. As the molar ratio of Ni/Fe increased, the structures of the five materials transformed from nanoflowers (Fe-MOFs) to nanospheres (Ni/Fe(3:1)MOFs) , and eventually to rhombic blocks (Ni-MOFs) . The specific surface area decreased from 281.3 m²/g (Fe-MOFs) to 67.11 m²/g (Ni/Fe(1:1)MOFs) and further to 0.5369 m²/g (Ni-MOFs) . XPS analysis confirmed the synergistic coordination between Ni and Fe, and FT-IR spectra revealed characteristic peaks for hydroxyl groups on the MOF surface and carboxylate ligands. XRD analysis indicated that materials with higher Ni content were more prone to ligand decomposition, which is consistent with the weight loss observed in the TG-DSC between 230 and 350 °C. The materials exhibited selective adsorption for different dyes. Under optimal conditions, the maximum adsorption capacities for Eosin Y (EY), Neutral Red (NR), and Acid Fuchsin (AF) were 54.92 mg/g (Fe-MOFs) , 636.31 mg/g (Ni-MOFs) , and 79.30 mg/g (Ni/Fe(1:1)MOFs) , respectively. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir model, while Fe-MOFs and Ni/Fe(1:1) MOFs also exhibited compatibility with the Freundlich model. The adsorption mechanism primarily involved monolayer adsorption as the dominant process, with localized multilayer adsorption, as well as chemisorption, hydrogen bonding, hydroxyl interactions, and electrostatic interactions. These MOFs demonstrated high dye removal efficiency in actual water samples and fruit and vegetable juices, exhibiting excellent reusability and anti-interference capabilities. Importantly, compared with the single system, Fe-MOFs and Ni/Fe(1:1)MOFs exhibit competitive adsorption, and Ni-MOFs exhibit synergistic adsorption in the binary system. This study confirms that by adjusting the Ni/Fe molar ratio, MOFs with high selectivity and adsorption performance for different dyes can be designed, providing new theoretical insights and technical support for environmental remediation and food safety applications.

One-Pot synthesis of MWCNTs/Fe-MOFs nanocomposites for enhanced adsorption of As(V) in aqueous solution

Weiwei Li,Wenlan Ji,Murat Yılmaz,Tian C. Zhang,Shaojun Yuan

Arsenic is a toxic carcinogen, and arsenic pollution in groundwater is one of the most serious environmental problems in the world. Thus, it is an urgent problem to efficient removal of arsenic from groundwater. In this work, a novel MWCNTs/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized to improve the water stability of MIL-53(Fe) by incorporation of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using a one-pot hydrothermal method, and was then used to efficiently adsorb As(V) ions from groundwater. Adsorption experimental results demonstrated an ultrafast adsorption rate of As(V) on the MWCNTs/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposites in solution pH values of 3 to 10, and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached in circa 20 min with an adsorption capacity of 27.24 mg·g −1 in a low As(V) concentration of 10 mg·L −1 . The adsorption kinetics of As(V) on the MWCNTs/MIL-53(Fe) was found in line with the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, and was simultaneously controlled by both internal diffusion and liquid film diffusion. The adsorption isotherm data conformed to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model, indicating both physical and chemical adsorption occurred at heterogeneous interfaces. Moreover, the postulated adsorption mechanism of As(V) on MWCNTs/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposites was ascribed to hydrogen-bond interaction, electrostatic attraction and chemical complexation. Therefore, the as-prepared MWCNTs/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposites not only exhibit superior water stability and outstanding adsorption performance in removing arsenic-contaminated groundwater, but also offer a novel insight for rational preparation of water-stable MOF-based composites.

Fe-MOFs/graphene oxide-derived magnetic nanocomposite for enhanced adsorption of As(V) in aqueous solution

Wenlan Ji,Weiwei Li,Yuan Wang,Tian C. Zhang,Shaojun Yuan

The urgent need to remove arsenic from groundwater stems from the irreversible damage it causes to aquatic systems and biological health. In this study, unique magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites derived from MIL-100(Fe)/GO precursor were rationally and precisely developed by combination of solvothermal synthesis and pyrolysis methods. The optimized MIL-100(Fe)/1%GO-400 magnetic nanocomposite (where 1% and 400 represent the mass ratio of GO to MIL-100(Fe) and pyrolysis temperature, respectively) exhibited exceptional adsorption capacity for As(V) and possessed magnetic separation properties. The novel nanocomposite had complete MOF morphology and crystal structure, as well as good resistance to interference from ions and could be used effectively over a wide pH range (2–9) for adsorption of As(V). The As(V) adsorption on the nanocomposite was found to follow the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and Temkin adsorption isotherm model, as well as a spontaneous endothermic process dominated by chemisorption. The incorporation of GO and pyrolysis of the Fe-MOFs was proven to enhance the adsorption capacity of nanocomposite, water stability, and magnetic recovery ability. The adsorption mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effect of chemical complexation, hydrogen binding and electrostatic interaction. This work not only presents a feasible strategy for the development of Fe-MOFs-based derivatives, but also offers a promising approach to expanding the application of functional Fe-MOFs-based derivatives in arsenic-contaminated wastewater treatment.

Development of a pH/Cellulase Dual-Responsive Fe-MOFs Delivery System for Targeted Control of Maize Fungal Diseases

Yuanbo Li,Taiming Zhang,Yanru Ding,Yuhao Chen,Yukui Rui

The iron-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) (MIL) has gained widespread attention as a drug carrier material in agriculture. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite, MIL@A@D@C, was successfully synthesized by loading the fungicide azoxystrobin (AZOX) and immunoinducer d-cellobiose (D) onto MIL, followed by surface modification with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The loading capacity of MIL was optimized by varying solvent conditions and the mass ratio of MIL to AZOX, revealing that ethanol as the reaction solvent and a MIL: AZOX mass ratio of 1:4 resulted in the highest loading efficiency (6.73%). MIL@A@D@C exhibited pH- and cellulase-responsive controlled release behavior. In vitro antifungal assays demonstrated that MIL@A@D@C at a low concentration of 1 ppm effectively inhibited Colletotrichum graminicola (the causal agent of maize anthracnose). Foliar application experiments further confirmed that the composite formulation achieved significant inhibition at a low dosage of 10 ppm, outperforming commercial azoxystrobin products. Plant and animal safety assessments indicated that MIL@A@D@C possessed enhanced biosafety. These findings highlight the potential of MIL@A@D@C as an environmentally friendly and highly effective nanodelivery system for crop disease management.

Insights into the novel application of Fe-MOFs in ultrasound-assisted heterogeneous Fenton system: Efficiency, kinetics and mechanism

Nannan Geng,Wei Chen,Hang Xu,Mingmei Ding,Tao Lin,Qiangshun Wu,Lei Zhang

In this work, as a new strategy, ultrasound/H 2 O 2 /MOF system was firstly applied by environmental-benign Fe-MOFs (MIL-53, MIL-88B and MIL-101) for tetracycline hydrochloride removal. The synthetic   Fe-MOFs were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, XPS, N 2 sorption-desorption isotherms and CO-FTIR. MIL-88B demonstrated the best catalytic performance because of its highest amount of Lewis acid sites. Influencing factors, contrast experiment, and corresponding dynamics were carried out to obtain the best experimental conditions and reaction system. Under optimal conditions ([Tetracycline   hydrochloride] = 10 mg/L, [MIL-88B] = 0.3 g/L, [H 2 O 2 ] = 44 mM, [ultrasound power] = 60 W, and pH = 5.0), the-first-order kinetic rate constant k was calculated to be 0.226 min −1 , higher than the simple combination of the ultrasound system (0.004) and MIL-88B/H 2 O 2 system (0.163), indicating the importance of synergistic effect between ultrasound and Fenton reaction. EPR test and quenching experiment proved that ·OH is mainly responsible for tetracycline hydrochloride removal. The major reaction path is the adsorption and decomposition of H 2 O 2 by coordinative unsaturated iron sites on Fe-MOF, but it is not the only path. The direct decomposition of H 2 O 2 and the cavitation effect caused by ultrasound also contribute to the generation of OH.

Enhanced activation of PMS via Fe-MOFs-derives@BC for efficient removal of dyes: Complementary between radical and nonradical pathways

Mingjun Xie,Yuying Han,Na Wang,Zixuan Huang,Congting Sun

The efficient elimination of recalcitrant synthetic dyes from complex waters remains a pressing challenge for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, an Fe-MOFs-derives@BC composite was fabricated by anchoring MIL-101(Fe) crystals onto rice-straw biochar followed by high-temperature carbonization. XRD, SEM and XPS confirm the formation of a crystal–amorphous hybrid in which residual MIL-101(Fe) nanocrystallites are embedded within a conductive carbon matrix rich in oxygen vacancies. The composite rapidly activates PMS via a synergistic Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle and carbon-facilitated electron transfer, generating SO₄• − , •OH, and 1 O₂ to driving Rhodamine B (RhB) and Malachite Green (MG) degradation. Under optimal conditions (0.1 g L −1 catalyst, 0.1 g L −1 PMS), >90% RhB and MG were removed within 15 min across deionised, groundwater, lake and river matrices; even in the most complex river water, 90% removal is achieved in 10 min. When Fe-MOFs-derives@BC is immobilised in a poly (vinylidene fluoride) membrane, a continuous-flow micro-reactor maintains >90% removal over 600 min with negligible flux decline and undetectable Fe leaching. This hybrid radical/non-radical pathway, broad matrix tolerance and long-term membrane stability position Fe MOFs-derives@BC/PMS as a robust, scalable platform for advanced wastewater treatment.

Bimetallic Eu/Fe-MOFs ratiometric fluorescent nanoenzyme for selective cholesterol detection in biological serum: Synthesis, characterization, mechanism and DFT calculations

Jun Yao,Zhuang Xie,Xiang Zeng,Li Wang,Tingting Yue

Cholesterol is one of the most significant indicators to assess health status. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have a unique luminescence mechanism, which makes it possess tremendous potential in biomonitoring. Thus, on the basic of intramolecular charge transfer theory and quenching effect, the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) doped by europium was constructed to respond to the cholesterol in serum. The charge transfer direction and the sensing mechanism of fluorescent probe were explained in detail by cross-corroboration of experiment and calculation. The possible sensing mechanism was explained at the molecular level with density functional theory (DFT). With the excitation of 350 nm, the emission peaks at 458 nm and 615 nm which corrsponded to MIL-53(Fe) and Eu centers, appeared enhancement and quenching respectively. To investigate the emission law, the density of states and partial density of states were used to explain the internal electron migration of the probe and the possible sensing mechanism. The results showed the electron transfer efficiency of MIL-53(Fe) was enhanced after Eu 3+ doping, which brought a remarkable improvement in response sensitivity. Meanwhile, the higher energy possessed by the excited state of Eu will lead to the capture of its own electrons by hydrogen peroxide, thus reducing the number of electrons returned to the ground states of Eu and eventually leading to the fluorescence quenching of 615 nm. We anticipate the proposed research is to be an emerging method in cholesterol determination and have further development in all walks of life.
