Separation and purification of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water nanoemulsions is a great environmental challenge. Membrane-based separation strategies are more effective over conventional methods in the treatment of nanoemulsion waste water. In this paper, we construct a superhydrophilic membrane by coating a thin photothermal-responsive iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Fe-TCPP) nanofibrous metal organic framework (MOF) selective layer on a macroporous polyethersulfone membrane. The as-prepared membrane exhibits high separation performance of oil-in-water nanoemulsions with permeance of 46.4 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1 and separation efficiency of 99%. It also demonstrates nice anti-oil/ionic-fouling property, good recyclability, and desirable stability. The high separation performance is accredited to the superhydrophilicity, highly charged surface, and nanometer pore sizes of the Fe-TCPP nanofibrous membrane. Due to the unique photothermal property of Fe-TCPP nanofibers, the permeance can be enhanced more than 50% by visible light without deteriorating the rejection. This photo-stimuli MOF-based thin-layer membrane offers great potential for the generation of point-of-use water treatment devices.

In this work, we synthesized Fe-Tcpp@ICG(ICG, Indocyanine green) with light stimuli-response through 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Fe-Tcpp) loaded ICG by electrostatic adsorption. The morphology and properties of Fe-Tcpp and Fe-Tcpp@ICG were characterised by ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analyzer and transmission electron microscope , respectively. A non-enzymatic photoelectrochemical sensor based on Fe-Tcpp@ICG was constructed to quantitatively detect hydrogen peroxide in tumor microenvironment . Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of detecting hydrogen peroxide was 0.01–50 mmol/L with detection limit of 0.2 μmol/L (S/N = 3). This sensor proposed a simple, fast, sensitive and label-free method for the detection of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, the results also showed that the Fe-Tcpp@ICG can catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to generate singlet oxygen, which can kill tumor cells. These indicated that this material was expected to be used for detecting hydrogen peroxide and inhibition of tumor cell growth.

The slow conversion of Fe(Ⅱ)/Fe(III) cycle was largely limited the degradation efficiency of many photo-Fenton systems. Herein, four Fe-MOFs nanorods (namely Fe-TCPP-1, Fe-TCPP-2, Fe-TCPP-3, Fe-TCPP-4) with decreasing length-diameter ratios were synthesized in a household microwave oven, using photosensitizer porphyrin and iron ions with Fenton activity as building blocks. Among them, the Fe-TCPP-3 exhibited high photogenerated electron-hole ( e − - h + ) separation efficiency and largest pore structure , endowing Fe-TCPP-3 with superior photo-Fenton property. In addition, Fe-TCPP-3 based photo-Fenton system was applied to efficiently degrade antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) under neutral condition, due to the continuously generated reactive species ( h + , e − , OH · , O 2 ·– , 1 O 2 ) in Fe-TCPP-3 under visible-light irradiation. With irradiation for 30 min, the degradation efficiency of the system could reach about 73 %, which was about 26-fold towards the system without light irradiation . This study paved a way to modulating the photo-Fenton activity of MOF-based catalysts.

Synthesizing defects free, mechanically robust, thin polyamide (PA) selective layer with sufficient channels for boosted permeance/selectivity of the thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are the central issues which impede the lab-made nanoseparation membranes commercialization. In this work, a new approach is developed to synthesize thin PA layer by light-driven interfacial-polymerization (IP) via photothermal effect from Fe-TCPP metal organic frameworks (MOFs) nanofibers inter-layer. The Fe-TCPP nanofibers convert the illuminating visible light into heat (high local temperature) and provide to PA polymerization, ultimately synthesizing robust, thin, hydrophilic PA selective layer. After removing the Fe-TCPP nanofibers layer from the prepared thin PA film with Fe-TCPP nanofibers (TFN) NF membrane, the PA of the thin-film composite (TFC) NF membrane is enforced enough to sustain high pressure of 8 bars. The resulted TFC NF membrane shows boosted methanol and acetonitrile permeances of 120 and 160 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 with 97% rejection to acid fuchsin dye. The nanofiltration membranes show stable separation performance in both organic and aqueous mediums and have potential for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) and dye-wasted water nanoseparation. This photothermal-driven interfacial-polymerization will open doors for typical TFC nanofiltration/reverse osmosis membranes.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) based Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have promising advantages in the separation of dyes and salts to purify the industrial polluted water. Herein, we report the synthesis of porphyrinic, porous and ultra-fast photothermal sensitive iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) (Fe-TCPP) MOFs nanofibers and the corresponding thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes by facile interfacial polymerization (IP). The Fe-TCPP nanofibers based TFN membrane enhances the pure water permeance to 28.1 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ( i.e., 3.5-fold higher than thin film composite (TFC)) by providing continuous hydrophilic flow pathways to permeate. The Fe-TCPP nanofibers contribute to the surface of TFN membrane, resulting not only fast permeation, but also ultra-high rejection of dyes i.e., 97.2%, 98.3% and 99.1% for Indocyanine Green, Brilliant Blue-R and Direct Red-80, respectively. Additionally, the TFN membrane also demonstrates 23–43 % salts rejection. Due to the ultra-fast photothermal responsive nature of Fe-TCPP nanofibers (88.4 °C increased temperature in 2 sec photo exposure), the water permeation of TFN NF membrane increases 30 % with 0.5 min under visible light-irradiation. This photo-induced ON/OFF separation is switchable. The enhanced permeation, high dyes rejection and photo-modulated ON/OFF nano-separation opens a new avenue for TCPP-based MOFs in the water purification technologies.

Fe–porphyrin/g-C3N4composites have emerged as promising visible-light photocatalysts, but their performance remains limited by inefficient charge separation and low reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield. Here, iron–tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Fe–TCPP) was coupled with g-C3N4nanotubes (CNNTs) via a facile self-assembly strategy, creating a morphology-coordinated system. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, FTIR, SEM/TEM, BET, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance, PL, XPS, and EPR) confirmed the structural integrity, electronic coupling, and ROS generation capability of the composites. Fe–TCPP incorporation narrowed the bandgap from 2.78 to 2.56 eV, prolonged the average carrier lifetime from 6.3 to 7.5 ns, and significantly enhanced the generation of •OH and1O2. The optimized 1 wt% Fe–TCPP@CNNTs achieved complete Rhodamine B degradation within 30 min under visible light, with the highest two-stage apparent rate constants (k1= 0.0964 min−1, k2= 0.328 min−1). In addition, the hybrids retained over 90% activity after six consecutive runs, confirming their stability and recyclability. The synergistic effect of Fe–N coordination and nanotubular architecture thus promotes light harvesting, charge separation, and ROS utilization, offering a promising design principle for high-performance photocatalysts in environmental remediation.

The management of multibacterial infections remains clinically challenging in the care and treatment of chronic diabetic wounds. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a promising approach to addressing bacterial infections. However, the limited target specificity and internalization properties of traditional photosensitizers (PSs) toward Gram-negative bacteria pose significant challenges to their antibacterial efficacy. In this study, we designed an iron heme–mimetic PS (MnO2@Fe-TCPP(Zn)) based on the iron dependence of bacteria that can be assimilated by bacteria and retained in different bacteria strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and which shows high PDT antibacterial efficacy. For accelerated wound healing after antibacterial treatment, MnO2@Fe-TCPP(Zn) was loaded into a zwitterionic hydrogel with biocompatibility and antifouling properties to form a nanocomposite antibacterial hydrogel (PSB-MnO2@Fe-TCPP(Zn)). In the multibacterial infectious diabetic mouse wound model, the PSB-MnO2@Fe-TCPP(Zn) hydrogel dressing rapidly promoted skin regeneration by effectively inhibiting bacterial infections, eliminating inflammation, and promoting angiogenesis. This study provides an avenue for developing broad-spectrum antibacterial nanomaterials for combating the antibiotic resistance crisis and promoting the healing of complex bacterially infected wounds.
