Catalytic combustion is considered as an efficient and economic technology to remove VOCs, and Al-ZSM-5 zeolite supported palladium catalysts (Pd/Al-ZSM-5) with good performances in this kind of reactions have been reported. In this work, it is found that Fe-ZSM-5 supported palladium catalyst (Pd/Fe-ZSM-5) exhibit higher catalytic activity in toluene combustion than the Pd/Al-ZSM-5, which is strongly related to more Pd 0 active species and higher concentration of absorbed oxygen species of Pd/Fe-ZSM-5 than those of Pd/Al-ZSM-5. More importantly, Pd/Fe-ZSM-5 has a good catalyst life and water-resistant ability, which should be potentially significant for practical applications in environment protection.

A unique zeolite catalyst, Fe doped ZSM-5 microsphere assembled by uniform nanorod-like crystals with hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized and applied for the adsorption and degradation of trace chlorobenzene (CB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The organic ferric salts as the precursors, ethylene glycol as a chelating/reducing agent and the dynamic two-stage temperature-varied hydrothermal technique, together made the synthesized hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 nanorods assembled microspheres (FZ-CA-5EG) to be characterized by abundant highly dispersed and valency-controlled framework Fe 3+/2+ species. As a result of these features, the FZ-CA-5EG showed excellent ability of adsorption and degradation efficiency of CB, and enhanced durability due to negligible leaching of framework Fe species. Moreover, the hydroxyl radicals were determined as the main the reactive oxygen species of CB oxidation degradation, and a possible adsorption-oxidation degradation pathway was proposed.

Zeolite products synthesized from mineral materials are receiving widespread attention, while there are few reports on the introduction of heteroatom metals from minerals into zeolites. Herein, the effects of different silicon sources, hydrothermal reaction time and the amount of template on the crystallisation of Fe-ZSM-5 were investigated. The morphology and structure of ZSM-5 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The catalysis of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by Fe-ZSM-5 was then carried out to evaluate its enzyme-like catalytic performance as a type of nanozyme catalyst. The results showed that Fe-ZSM-5 exhibited peroxidase-like activity, oxidizing TMB into a colored substance in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Kinetic analysis implied that, compared with natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP), Fe-ZSM-5 peroxidase mimics exhibit inferior affinity and enzymatic catalytic velocity towards the TMB substrate. However, it exhibited excellent stability under extreme pH, temperature, and ionic strength conditions. This work provides a possible reference for the construction of functional nanozymes using natural mineral resources.

Solid waste fly ash can encroach on land, contaminate the environment, and jeopardize human health. An alkali fusion method combined with a hydrothermal method was adopted to prepare fly ash-derived ZSM-5 molecular sieves, and a series of Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts were also prepared to test their catalytic performance in NO oxidation with H2O2. Moreover, the characteristics of catalysts synthesized by fly ash, as well as the relationship between the structure and the catalytic activity, were analyzed in detail through multiple characterization approaches. The results gave important insights into the active sites of catalytic oxidation. They concluded that 10% Fe/ZSM-5 had the best catalytic activity in which Fe sites and Brønsted acid sites collectively provided the catalytic functionality, and 92% NO removal efficiency was obtained achieved under optimal experimental conditions. This work provided a new way for recycling fly ash and developing low-cost catalysts for NO removal.

Hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites were directly synthesized from a zeolitic synthesis system in the presence of a silane coupling agent 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The structure and morphology of the hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 synthesized with different amount of GPTMS were characterized by XRD , SEM, TEM , and N 2 adsorption-desorption techniques. UV–vis and NH 3 -TPD were used to investigate the state of iron species and acidity, respectively. The steaming activated hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 were used as catalysts in the direct oxidation of benzene to phenol (BTOP) with N 2 O as oxidant, showing an improved performance in terms of both activity and stability compared to Fe-ZSM-5 synthesized in the absence of GPTMS. A comparison study on the n -butane uptakes in Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites indicated the internal mass-transfer limitations of the hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites were significantly improved.

The traditional treatment processes for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal generally suffered several disadvantages, such as secondary air-pollutants. To overcome these issues, wet scrubber coupled with heterogeneous UV/Fenton was developed for gaseous VOCs (i.e. toluene) removal. ZSM-5 supported iron oxide (Fe/ZSM-5) was prepared as a multifunctional catalyst for activation of H 2 O 2 and enhancement of gas-liquid mass transfer. Toluene was removed efficiently by this coupled process with the removal efficiency of 85% during 120 min. Many intermediates were detected in the solution by GC-MS while no intermediates were observed in the outlet gas, suggesting that wet scrubber coupled with heterogeneous UV/Fenton could significantly reduce secondary air pollutants . The possible mechanism of toluene oxidation was proposed including the physical adsorption by Fe/ZSM-5 and OH oxidation. This study provides an environmentally benign and highly efficient chemical scrubbing process for gaseous VOCs removal.

Despite the exceptional fire-suppressant capabilities of ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agents, additional work is essential to improve their overall fire-extinguishing performance. In this investigation, we explored the utility of Fe 3+ loaded ZSM-5 zeolite in enhancing the firefighting capabilities of ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agents. The loading of transition metal ions Fe 3+ onto the ZSM-5 zeolite was achieved through the ion solution exchange method. Interestingly, the loading of Fe element on Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite displayed a pattern of initial increase followed by decrease as the ion exchange time lengthened. Furthermore, the loading of Fe element on Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite was found to be influenced positively by the initial molar concentration of Fe 3+ and pH levels. Impressively, under specific working conditions, the prepared Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite demonstrated a substantial Fe element loading of 5.82 %. Incorporation of ZSM-5 zeolite resulted in a 10.01 % enhancement in the fire-extinguishing efficiency of the ultrafine dry powder compared to undoped samples. Moreover, the incorporation of Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite has resulted in an enhancement of fire extinguishing efficiency by 20.45 % (S3), 24.20 % (S4), and 29.04 % (S5) in comparison to S1. These findings contribute to the understanding that the incorporation of Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite significantly enhances the fire extinguishing performance of ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agents, with extinguishing efficiency improving with increased Fe element loading.

Methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) was a promising technology for the synthesis of high value-added aromatics through natural gas. Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts were widely used in MDA reaction. However, its catalytic mechanism remained ambiguous. In this work, a novel one-pot strategy was developed for the preparation of Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts, which can delicately control the iron species and acidic property of Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. In-situ DRIFTS and DFT calculation demonstrated that MDA followed a bifunctional mechanism and the second C–H bond breaking process of CH 4 was the rate-determining step, where methane underwent coupling and dehydrogenation at the iron active sites to generate intermediate species (ethylene), and Brønsted acid sites played a key role in determining the selectivity of aromatics. Moreover, CO-pulse chemisorption revealed the quantitative synergistic effect between metal active sites and Brønsted acid sites. Catalysts with highly dispersed iron oxide and proper density of Brønsted acid sites exhibited the best catalytic performance. This study elucidated the catalytic roles of iron species and Brønsted acid sites in Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts in MDA and provided guidance for the future development of highly active MDA catalysts.

In this paper, a series of Fe-based catalysts with Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) as supports were synthesized using the sol–gel method to obtain the Fe/ZSM-5, Mn-Fe/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were examined and characterized via catalytic activity testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results showed that the Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst had the best catalytic performance compared with the other catalysts. In addition, Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 all exhibited excellent stability as well as good tolerance to SO 2 & H 2 O under the experimental conditions. Further characterization results showed that with co-doping of Cu and Mn, the amount of Mn 4+ , Cu + , Fe 3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen (O β ) on the surface of Fe/ZSM-5 increased, promoting the catalytic performance. The DRIFT studies revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism on the surface of the Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst. The Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst is a good candidate for NH 3 -SCR both in high reactivity and outstanding stability.

Heterogeneous Fenton oxidation using traditional catalysts with H 2 O 2 for the degradation of 1,4-dioxane (1,4-DX) still presents challenge. In this study, we explored the potential of Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites (Fe-zeolite) with three Si/Al ratios (25, 100, 300) as heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the removal of 1,4-DX from aqueous solution. Fe 2 O 3 or ZSM-5 alone provided ineffective in degrading 1,4-DX when combined with H 2 O 2 . However, the efficient removal of 1,4-DX using H 2 O 2 was observed when Fe 2 O 3 was loaded on ZSM-5. Notably, the Brønsted acid sites of Fe-zeolite played a crucial role during the degradation of 1,4-DX. Fe-zeolites, in combination with H 2 O 2 , effectively removed 1,4-DX via a combination of adsorption and oxidation. Initially, Fe-zeolites demonstrated excellent affinity for 1,4-DX, achieving adsorption equilibrium rapidly in about 10 min, followed by effective catalytic oxidative degradation. Among the Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts, Fe-ZSM-5 (25) exhibited the highest catalytic activity and degraded 1,4-DX the fastest. We identified hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for 1,4-DX degradation, with superoxide anions (HO 2 · /O 2 · − ) mainly converting into 1 O 2 and ·OH. The degradation primarily occurred at the Fe-zeolite interface, with the degradation rate constants proportional to the amount of Brønsted acid sites on the Fe-zeolite. Fe-zeolites were effective over a wide working pH range, with alkaline pH conditions favoring 1,4-DX degradation. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the selection of suitable catalysts for effective removal of 1,4-DX using a heterogeneous Fenton technology.

Structured Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite supported on silicon carbide (SiC) foam catalyst was develop and applied as the packed foam bed catalytic reactor (FBCR) to the liquid phase catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol under flow conditions. Fe catalysts were uniformly incorporated into ZSM-5 coatings using chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Fluid flow analysis of FBCR was performed by varying liquid flow rate, showing the transition of reactor type from the plug flow reactor to the continuous stirred tank reactor at about 1 ml min −1 . Systematic investigation of CWPO within Fe-ZSM-5/SiC FBCRs identified the optimum condition of operating the FBCR (80 mm bed length) as at 60 °C and 1 ml min −1 with the turnover frequency (TOF) of 95 h −1 for phenol degradation (apparent activation energy = 3.4 kJ mol −1 ) and total organic carbon (TOC) conversion of 45.5%. It was believed that the enhanced macromixing promoted by cellular foam supports was accountable for the observed catalytic performance. The longevity of FBCR under flow conditions was also assessed, showing its good stability over 24 h, as well as the potential for practical adoption.

Under the dual pressures of oil depletion and low-carbon transition, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) technology offers a viable option for producing high value-added lower (C 2 -C 4 ) hydrocarbons from non-oil sources. However, conventional Fe-based catalysts often suffer from deactivation due to carbon deposition and sintering. Here, we report a unique Fe-ZSM-5 catalyst synthesized by doping Fe into ZSM-5, which demonstrates excellent FTS catalytic performance. During high-temperature template removal, Fe species migrated from the zeolite framework to form highly dispersed FeO x clusters (∼2 nm). Upon treatment by syngas, these FeO x clusters aggregate to form uniformly small-sized Fe 5 C 2 @C core-shell particles distributed on ZSM-5 support. The confinement effect of the inter-crystalline structure effectively prevents the sintering of Fe 5 C 2 . The smaller Fe 5 C 2 particles exhibit controlled CO dissociation, reducing the concentration of activated carbon species (C*), and the carbon shells (∼6.5 nm) limit the departure of C*, effectively suppressing carbon deposition. This unique structure enables stable catalytic activity for over 100 hours with maintained product selectivity. The Fe-ZSM-5 catalyst achieved a C 2 -C 4 hydrocarbons selectivity of 54.52 %, nearing the 56 % theoretical limit of the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution. Additionally, the hydrophobic carbon shell prevents excessive oxidation of Fe 5 C 2 , reducing CO 2 selectivity by ∼56 % compared to conventional Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts, significantly enhancing atomic utilization efficiency and aligning with the principles of green development.
