Electrocatalytic N 2 reduction provides an attractive alternative to Haber-Bosch process for artificial NH 3 synthesis. The difficulty of suppressing competing proton reduction, however, largely impedes its practical use. Herein, we design a hydrophobic octadecanethiol-modified Fe 3 P nanoarrays supported on carbon paper (C18@Fe 3 P/CP) to effectively repel water, concentrate N 2 , and enhance N 2 -to-NH 3 conversion. Such catalyst achieves an NH 3 yield of 1.80 × 10 −10 mol·s −1 ·cm −2 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.22% in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 , outperforming the non-modified Fe 3 P/CP (2.16 × 10 −11 mol·s −1 ·cm −2 , 0.9%) counterpart. Significantly, C18@Fe 3 P/CP renders steady N 2 -fixing activity/selectivity in cycling test and exhibits durability for at least 25 h. First-principles calculations suggest that the surface electronic structure and chemical activity of Fe 3 P can be well tuned by the thiol modification, which facilitates N 2 electroreduction activity and catalytic formation of NH 3 .

Graphical Nanoporous Co-doped Fe 3 P prepared by dealloying is used as electrocatalyst for nitrate reduction. Due to the electronic structure regulation caused by Co doping, the Co-doped Fe 3 P exhibits high ammonia yield rate of 24.56 mg h −1 cm − 2 with Faradaic efficiency of 91.45%. Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) offers a sustainable avenue for mitigating nitrate pollution and enabling decentralized ammonia production. However, achieving high efficiency and selectivity remains challenging due to the sluggish multielectron transfer kinetics. Herein, we report a nanoporous Co-Fe 3 P catalyst featuring cobalt-doped iron phosphide frameworks that modulate the d band center, thereby optimizing intermediate binding and enhancing catalytic performance. The catalyst delivers a high ammonia yield rate of 24.56 mg h −1 cm − 2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 91.45% at −0.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in alkaline media. In situ infrared spectroscopy identifies key intermediates, such as NH 2 OH, NO 2 − , and NH 2 , indicative of an associative pathway. Furthermore, when integrated into a Zn–NO 3 − battery, the Co-Fe 3 P cathode enables a high-power density of 15.83 mW cm − 2 with excellent Faradaic efficiency and cycling stability.

Developing transition metal-based catalysts is a feasible approach to decrease the cost of fuel cells. In this paper, we synthesized a worm-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulated Fe 3 P and Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 alloy based catalysts (FP/FM@CNTs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by calcination method. The precursor for the calcination was prepared by hydrothermal method. The CNTs encapsulation structure was confirmed by SEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS and EDS tests. The electrocatalytic performances for ORR of the catalyst were examined in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte by using CV, LSV, Tafel, EIS, RDE and RRDE tests. The obtained results presented that the half-wave potential(E 1/2 ) of FP/FM@CNTs catalyzed ORR was 0.892 V (vs. RHE), the maximum current intensity and the Tafel slope of FP/FM@CNTs catalyzed ORR were superior to that of the Pt/C catalyst. The density function theory calculation ascertained that the encapsulated Fe 3 P made the carbon atoms in surface layer CNT in negative electron state that could transfer electrons easily to oxygen molecular and promote the ORR happening. On the other hand, the CNTs encapsulation structure protected the Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 alloy and Fe 3 P from the directly contact with electrolyte and other reactants, which assured the long-term operational stability of the catalysts. The content of this paper presents a novel approach for designing high-performance catalysts.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous and highly persistent in soil. Owing to the potential adverse effects of peroxides to soil ecosystems, oxidant-free advanced oxidation process (AOP) is highly demanded for PAHs remediation. We utilize the composites of phosphatized sludge biochars and core/shell Fe 3 P@Fe (PSL-Fe 3 P/Fe) as catalysts to decompose PAHs in soil. In a wide range of soil moisture, pyrene, benzo[ a ]anthracene, benzo[ a ]pyrene, indeno[1,2,3- cd ]pyrene, and dibenzo[ a , h ]anthracene are efficiently degraded by PSL-Fe 3 P/Fe within 6 h. For the first time, we find that reactive oxygen species resulting from internal micro-electrolysis (IME) of biochars (cathode) and Fe 3 P@Fe (anode) are sufficient for PAHs degradation. Strong adsorption, excellent electrical conductivity, high potential difference between Fe 3 P@Fe anode and biochars cathode, and acid-microenvironment provided by P 2 O 5 component trigger the remarkable reactivity of PSL-Fe 3 P/Fe. The environmental-benign PSL-Fe 3 P/Fe can eliminate the phytotoxicity of high-level of PAHs (200 mg/kg), recover soil microbial diversity, and promote the growth of lettuce Lactuca sativa .

With the increasing global interest in renewable energy, hydrogen production through water electrolysis has emerged as a promising method for clean energy generation. However, the efficiency of water splitting, particularly in acidic conditions, is limited by the need for high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, Co-doped Fe 3 P/N-doped carbon composites have been prepared fast by microwave assistance with enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The doping of Co facilitated the transfer of electrons from Fe to Co, modified the electronic structure of metal active sites, thereby enhancing catalyst performance. The optimized Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 P x @NC catalyst exhibited superior HER and OER activity, with low overpotentials (91 and 251 mV for HER and OER, respectively) and Tafel slopes (60.3 and 55.3 mV/dec for HER and OER, respectively), and demonstrated excellent stability. In addition, the catalyst showed competitive performance in a two-electrode system for overall water splitting, achieving a high current density at low voltage. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of metal phosphides and nitrogen-doped carbon, providing an efficient and cost-effective approach to bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting applications with high performance and durability.
