Construction of dual active sites on diatomic metal (FeCo−N/C-x) catalysts for enhanced Fenton-like catalysis

Zhendong Zhao,Wenjun Zhou,Daohui Lin,Lizhong Zhu,Baoshan Xing,Zhiqi Liu

High metal loading of single-atom catalysts enables excellent catalytic activity, but possibly causes serious aggregation problem. Herein, a series of diatomic FeCo−N/C-x (x represents metal content) were skillfully designed and applied to improve the catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward degrading organic micropollutants. The unprecedented dual active sites, referring to Fe(N 3 )−Co(N 3 ) moiety and FeCo alloy, are constructed on the obtained FeCo−N/C-x, thereby exhibiting significantly greater performance toward degrading aqueous phenol (e.g., 0.316 min −1 for FeCo−N/C-3) via PMS activation, compared with those of traditional single-atom Co−N/C (0.011 min −1 ) and Fe−N/C (0.018 min −1 ). Combined experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate the independent functions of dual active sites, in which Fe(N 3 )−Co(N 3 ) and FeCo alloy can decrease the energy barrier of O−O bond cleaving resulting in the formation of high-valent FeCo O reactive species and singlet oxygen, respectively. This study opens up a new platform toward constructing dual active sites for enhanced Fenton-like catalytic activity.

Coupling Fe-Co atomic pair to promote the selective reduction of nitroaromatics under mild conditions

Li Gong,Leben Qiu,Xiaoqian Xing,Jieyun Zhu,Mengzhi Lu,Feier Dong,Yan Yu,Weiting Yu

Selectively reducing nitroaromatics into aromatic amines will not only remove nitroaromatic pollutants in waste effluents to reduce environmental risks, but also yield important feedstocks for chemical industrial manufactures. In this study, a FeCo-co-embedded N-doped Carbon (FeCo-N-C) catalyst with Fe-Co atomic pair has been identified with favorable activity, superior selectivity , excellent reusability, as well as outstanding performance in the treatment of real water. The combined results from theoretical study and experimental tests indicate that the improved catalytic performance of FeCo-N-C is owing to the narrowed band gap and electron delocalization caused by the Fe-Co atomic pair which can improve electron transport in its catalytic reaction. The results of isotope experiments and H* quenching experiments confirm that H 2 O is the source of hydrogen in catalytic reduction of PNP. FeCo-N-C is identified as a superior catalyst to replace multitudinous currently used noble-metal catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of nitroaromatics in wastewater treatment .

Engineering hierarchical pores in FeCo-N-C catalysts to construct advanced cathode catalyst layers for AEMFCs with alleviated water management

Chaoqi Han,Ming Chen,Wenwen Shi,Ruimin Ding,Junliang Zhang,Xi Yin

Water (H 2 O) management limitations within the cathode catalyst layer (CCL), particularly for precious-metal-free metal/nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts, severely constrain the performance of anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). To address this challenge, we implement precision pore-structure engineering at the catalyst-intrinsic level. Three hierarchically porous FeCo-N-C catalysts were synthesized, enabling the fabrication of CCLs with tailored pore architectures. The CCL prepared from the macroporous-open catalyst (o-CCL) exhibits an optimized pore structure, characterized by a restructured distribution of hydrophilic hierarchical pores along with a high porosity of 54.7% and a low tortuosity of 1.61. Simulations and experimental measurements collectively confirm that the optimized o-CCL achieves improved H 2 O distribution, enhanced gas-liquid flow velocity, and reduced oxygen (O 2 ) transport resistance. These structural advantages collectively lead to a notable improvement in AEMFC performance. The o-CCL, with an electrode area of 5 cm 2 , achieves peak power densities of 684 mW cm −2 in H 2 /air and 1153 mW cm −2 in H 2 /O 2 . This study demonstrates that pore-structure engineering at the catalyst particle level offers a viable strategy to alleviate the H 2 O-O 2 transport conflict in AEMFCs and improve overall cell performance.

Protecting Saccharomyces cerevisiae Cells with Nanozymes to Increase Alcohol Production

Cailin Qiao,Xinrou Wang,Yuwei Gao,Yi Ma,Huibo Luo,Suyi Zhang,Danqun Huo,Changjun Hou

A method was proposed to enhance the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells and increase the alcohol yield. This strategy utilized nanozymes, specifically FeCo-Prussian blue analogue nanoparticles (FeCo-PBA NPs), FeCo-N-C, CoSO porous nanocubes (CoSO PNCs), and FeN3P-single-atom nanozymes (FeN3P-SAzyme), to mimic the antioxidant enzymes. When subjected to H2O2 stress, the nanozymes significantly stimulated cell growth and effectively reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), as evidenced by the decrease in the malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Additionally, the decline in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity within the fermentation environment suggested that nanozymes provided protection against cell membrane damage caused by H2O2. This protective effect can be attributed to their inhibitory impact on ROS production. Further results demonstrated that 50 μg mL–1 of nanozymes led to an increase in the ethanol yield and total alcohol yield in S. cerevisiae. This approach held great potential for enhancing alcohol production efficiency in the S. cerevisiae industrial fermentation process.

Bimetal- and nitrogen-codoped spherical porous carbon with efficient catalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media

Dong Xiang,Xiangjie Bo,Xiaohui Gao,Cheng Du,Ping Li,Liande Zhu,Wei Chen

Nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts have been intensively investigated, but how to keep a balance between their sustainability and competitive performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is still a big challenge for energy applications. In this work, a type of bimetal- and nitrogen-codoped mesoporous carbon electrocatalyst (FeCo-N/C-800) was successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method , followed by a calcination process at 800 °C in nitrogen atmosphere and an acid-etching process. The obtained FeCo-N/C-800 can act as a high-performance ORR catalyst with high onset and half-wave potentials (0.94 and 0.85 V), a large limiting current density (5.94 mA cm −2 ) and a four-electron reaction process in 0.1 M KOH solution, which can be comparable with commercial Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, the FeCo-N/C-800 exhibited superior long-term durability and high methanol tolerance. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of the FeCo-N/C-800 can be ascribed to the mesoporous structure (bimodal pores system), the synergetic interaction of the multiple ORR active sites, suitable N-doping level and the highly conductive carbon matrix. These structural features can promote efficiently the mass and electron transfer , provide abundant active sites for the adsorption and reaction of oxygen molecules, and thus improve the reaction kinetics. The present study not only provides a strategy for the synthesis of carbon-based electrocatalyst with high ORR catalytic activity and stability, but also demonstrates that the bimetal- and nitrogen-codoped carbon materials could be a class of competitive candidate for non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.
