In response to the growing demand for clean, green, and sustainable energy sources, the development of cost-effective and durable high-activity overall water splitting electrocatalysts is urgently needed. In this study, the heterogeneous structure formed by the combination of FeCoNiP and FeNi-LDH was homogeneously dispersed onto CuO nanowires generated by in-situ oxidation of copper foam as a substrate using an electrodeposition method. This multilevel structure exhibits excellent bifunctional properties as an electrode material in alkaline solutions, for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) only 206 mV and 147 mV overpotentials are needed to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm −2 respectively. Full water electrolysis is thus enabled to take place at such a low cell voltage as 1.64 V to reach the current density of 100 mA cm −2 , which exhibits a long-term stability of 30 h. These improved electrocatalytic performances stem from the construction of multilevel structures. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that strong electron transfer occurs between heterogeneous structures, thus facilitating the OER and HER process. The dispersion of CuO nanowires not only increases the electrochemically active surface areas but also improves the overall hydrophilic and aerophobic properties. This work highlights the positive effect of multilevel structure in the design of more efficient electrocatalysts and provides a reference for the preparation of other low-cost, high-activity bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Iron group metal phosphides (IMPs) are one of the most promising substitutes for non-noble electrocatalysts in overall water splitting. In this work, an electrocatalyst system consisting of different vertically aligned heteroatom-doped graphene arrays (X-rGO, X = N, P, B, O, S) integrated with FeCoNiP nanoparticles (FeCoNiP@X-rGO, X = N, P, B, O, S) is prepared for overall water splitting. The unique vertical structure and the synergistic effect between the P in P-rGO and the P in FeCoNiP leads to the excellent electrocatalytic performance of FeCoNiP@P-rGO by exhibiting low overpotentials (121 and 216 mV) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction in 1 m KOH and 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 , respectively. As well as a low overpotential (354 mV) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the oxygen evolution reaction in 1.0 m KOH. The FeCoNiP@P-rGO electrocatalyst exhibits an outstanding durability toward overall water splitting in alkaline electrolytes, and excellent Faraday efficiency (about 92%) as well. This work provides an insight in proper tuning and the development of appropriate substrates for IMPs and other transition metal compounds toward cost-effective and high efficiency electrocatalysts for water splitting reactions.

Abstract Self-supported non-noble metal based bifunctional electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability in a wide pH range are highly essential for the production of hydrogen and oxygen, remains a great challenge. Herein, a bifunctional electrocatalyst is synthesized via electroless plating of FeCoNiP nanoparticles on self-supported phosphorus-doped vertically aligned graphene arrays (FeCoNiP/P-VG). FeCoNiP/P-VG exhibits an exceptionally high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a wide pH range, with an overpotential of 81 and 141 mV for HER, and 240 and 409 mV for OER, in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 respectively, at current density of 10 mA. It also performs quite low Tafel slope value of 40 mV·dec −1 for HER and 69 mV·dec −1 for OER in 1.0 M KOH. More importantly, it shows prominent stability in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. This study may open a new avenue for the design and fabrication of self-supported bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting. Graphic Abstract

Engineering the electronic structure via heterojunction construction and morphological control effectively advances electrocatalysis. A dendritic porous FeCoNiP@HEAs Mott-Schottky heterojunction is fabricated by electrodeposition as bifunctional catalysts. The heterojunction modulates the electronic structure, optimizing the adsorption energy of reaction intermediates. The superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic surface minimizes bubble adhesion, while the dendritic tip architecture enriches electrolyte-active site contact. Consequently, the FeCoNiP@HEAs electrode exhibits outstanding activity and durability. In alkaline electrolyte, overpotentials for OER and HER are only 205 mV and 152 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. The two-electrode cell achieves stable overall water splitting at 1.66 V for 60 h at 100 mA cm −2 . XPS confirms that the heterojunction effectively regulates the interfacial electronic structure, with stronger modulation for phosphide/HEA composites than for phosphide/ternary alloy counterparts. High-valent metal ions further enhance performance. DFT calculations verify the Mott-Schottky heterojunction, which optimizes d-band center, reduces adsorption energy, accelerates interfacial electron transfer, and boosts catalytic activity.

Exploration of electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability, facile scale-up and low cost is one of the most crucial issues for water splitting. Ternary FeCoNi phosphides were obtained by electrodeposition of FeCoNi hydroxides on copper foam (CF) via cyclic voltammetry and followed by low-temperature phosphorization. Benefiting from synergistic effects between simultaneous presence of multi-metallic active centers and three-dimensional substrate of copper foam, FeCoNiP/CF exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 48 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 228 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH solution, and its Tafel slopes are respectively 93.46 and 87.84 mV dec −1 for HER and OER, indicating outstanding electrocatalytic activity as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. An electrolyzer assembled by this catalyst demonstrates cell voltages of 1.52 and 2.08 V at current densities of 10 and 200 mA cm −2 , respectively. Remarkably, the durability of FeCoNiP/CF measured by chronoamperometry test can maintain 96.4% after 120 h, indicating excellently long-term stability. The performances of FeCoNiP/CF are much better than those of FeCoNiP powder catalyst obtained by hydrothermal-phosphorization and other bimetallic phosphides, due to its uniquely grass-like morphology and synergetic effects of various metallic active centers. This research can provide an effective strategy of mass production of electrodes with prominent catalytic activity and stability for overall water splitting reaction.

Although extensive research has explored modulating the built-in electric field (BIEF) and interfacial dipole electric field (IDEF) individually, a strategy leveraging their synergistic interplay for bidirectional electron regulation remains scarcely explored. Herein, a bifunctional FeCoNiP/P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (FeCoNiP/PCN) heterojunction was constructed and confirmed by TEM analysis. XPS and DFT analyses confirmed the co-existence of synergistic dual electric fields: a BIEF directed from PCN to FeCoNiP and an oppositely oriented IDEF, which cooperatively establish a bidirectional charge-transfer channel. This unique dual-field configuration drove highly efficient spatial charge separation, as evidenced by significantly quenched photoluminescence (PL), diminished charge-transfer resistance (EIS), and a markedly enhanced photocurrent response. The synergistic electric fields enabled bidirectional electron flow, thus enabling the simultaneous photooxidation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and its selective reduction to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The optimized FeCoNiP/PCN heterojunction showed significantly enhanced catalytic performance, achieving a 91 % degradation of 4-NP within 1.5 h with a rate constant 4 times and 25 times higher than pristine PCN and FeCoNiP, respectively. Moreover, it exhibited bifunctional performance, reducing 100 mg/L 4-NP nearly completely to 4-AP within only 4 min. The superior performance is primarily attributed to the synergistic interplay between the BIEF and IDEF, which efficiently lowers energy barriers and orchestrates directional electron transfer, as elucidated by combined experiments and theory. This study proposes a feasible strategy to regulate bidirectional electron flow via synergistic dual electric fields in heterojunctions, which opens a new avenue for designing high-performance bifunctional catalysts to tackle complex environmental issues.
