In this study, FeMoO 4 was applied to activate persulfate (PS, S 2 O 8 2− ) for azo dye Orange G (OG) degradation. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. FeMoO 4 showed excellent efficiency in activating PS for OG removal. More than 95% could be removed after 40 min under reaction conditions of 4 mM PS, 0.3 g L −1 FeMoO 4 and 0.2 mM OG. The effect of different parameters (PS doses, FeMoO 4 doses and pH) were evaluated. The results showed that acid condition provided higher efficiency and overdosing FeMoO 4 and PS presented a scavenging effect. Major intermediates were identified and possible degradation pathway was proposed. Recycle tests presented that FeMoO 4 had excellent recyclable stability in activating PS for OG removal. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals all occurred in the oxidation reactions and the former came first. The oxidation reaction was involved in the translation of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ occurred on the surface layer. This study revealed that the FeMoO 4 /PS system is a very promising method for degrading organic contaminants in the environment.

The mild reaction conditions, simple process, and clean raw materials make electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction to ammonia (NRR) a promising method for producing this crucial substance for human life. The proposed catalysts have been shown to reduce the reaction barrier and improve catalytic efficiency, making them an excellent choice for this process. Carbon nanotubes coated FeMoO 4 (FeMoO 4 @CNTs) nanorods are a highly efficient catalyst for fixing N 2 to NH 3 . Carbon nanotubes doped FeMoO 4 improve the efficiency of electrocatalytic NRR by increasing their active surface. A superior ammonia yield of 18.49 μg h −1 ·mg·cat −1 at −0.65 V was obtained in a 0.1 mol L −1 Na 2 SO 4 solution, with a corresponding Faraday efficiency of 16.14%. The response of the experimental system to environmental factors was also investigated. The data clearly indicates that raising the temperature does not enhance the yield of ammonia. This reaction system is optimal for neutral or alkaline environments.

The development of highly efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for seawater electrolysis is of great importance for applications. Here, an amorphous FeMoO 4 nanorod array on Ni foam is reported as a highly active OER electrocatalyst in alkaline seawater, requiring only overpotentials of 303 and 332 mV to achieve 100 and 300 mA·cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, it shows strong long-term electrochemical durability for at least 50 h.

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are abundant and cost-effective materials. However, poor conductivity and low intrinsic activity limit their application in electrolyzed water catalysts. Herein, we prepared P-FeMoO 4 in situ on nickel foam (P-FMO@NF) by phosphorylation-modified FeMoO 4 to optimize its electrocatalytic properties. Interestingly, phosphorus doping is accompanied by the generation of oxygen vacancies and surface phosphates . Oxygen vacancies accelerated Mo dissolution during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), leading to the rapid reconfiguration of P-FMO@NF to FeOOH and regulating the electronic structure of P-FMO@NF. The formation of phosphates is caused by the substitution of some molybdates with phosphates, which further increases the amount of oxygen vacancies . Hence, the OER overpotential of P-FMO@NF at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 is only 206 mV, and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential is 154 mV. It was assembled into a water splitting cell with a voltage of just 1.59 V at 10 mA cm −2 and shows excellent stability over 50 h. These excellent electrocatalytic properties are mainly attributed to the oxygen vacancies , which improve the interfacial charge transfer properties of the catalysts. This study provides new insights into phosphorus doping and offers a new perspective on the design of electrocatalysts.

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction is a more ecologically friendly alternative to the high-energy Haber-Bosch method for ammonia manufacturing, but was lack of efficient catalyst, especially in the neutral electrolyte. Inspired by the composition of biological nitrogenase with the elements of Mo, Fe and S, vulcanized FeMoO 4 was designed as the nitrogen reduction electrocatalyst, which exhibited excellent catalytic performance and stability for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in neutral media. During the NRR test, the vulcanized FeMoO 4 achieved 31.93 μg h - 1 mg cat. -1 ammonia production rate and high Faradaic efficiency (30.9%) at −0.39 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 . The results demonstrated the viability of Fe-Mo base as an electrocatalyst for NRR and laid the path for the creation of a nitrogenase-like biomimetic electrocatalysts to achieve the effective N 2 fixation.

The synergistic coupling of different metal species endows mixed transition metal oxides (MTMOs) as electrode materials for supercapacitors with multiple redox reaction pathways and enhances the electronic conductivity. In this study, three MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 electrode materials were derived from the precursor PMo 12 @MIL-101(Fe) by pyrolysis at 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C under an O 2 atmosphere. The precursor was composed of polyoxomolybdate (H 3 PMo 12 O 40 , PMo 12 ) and Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101(Fe). The structural characteristics of the three obtained MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 composites were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, and N 2 adsorption measurement. Then, the effects of the pyrolysis preparation temperature for the MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 composites on the energy storage performance of the supercapacitor electrode were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. Among three electrodes, the specific capacitance of 339.6 F g −1 of the obtained MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 (700 °C) electrode was the highest compared to 291.2 F g −1 of MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 (600 °C) and 209.7 F g −1 of MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 (800 °C) at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 in 1.0 M NaOH electrolyte. As a result, the different pyrolysis preparation temperatures can alter the atomic microelectronic state and geometric configuration of the MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 , which can construct a high-density Fe–Mo bimetallic multicatalytic active site, thus affecting the activity of the composites. The excellent pseudo-supercapacitance response of the MoO 2 @FeMoO 4 (700 °C) electrode can be ascribed to its larger S BET and greater number of voids, which can generate more Fe–Mo bimetallic active sites and facilitate the electrolyte diffusion, indicating high energy conversion efficiency for potential application in supercapacitors.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate \(({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ - )\) and nitride \(({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_2}^ - )\) to ammonia (NH 3 ) is of wide interest as a promising alternative to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch route for mitigating the vast energy consumption and the accompanied carbon dioxide emission, as well as benefiting for the relevant sewage treatment. However, exploring an efficient and low-cost catalyst with high atomic utilization that can effectively facilitate the slow multi-electron transfer process remains a grand challenge. Herein, we present an efficient hydrogenation of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ - /{\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_2}^ - \) species to NH 3 in both alkaline and neutral environments over the Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 derived hybrid electrocatalyst with the metallic Fe site on FeMoO 4 (Fe/FeMoO 4 ). The Mo ingredient can play a synergistically positive role in further promoting the NH 3 production on Fe. As a result, Fe/FeMoO 4 behaves well in the electrochemical NH 3 generation from \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_2}^ - \) with a maximum NH 3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.53% and 87.68% in alkaline and neutral electrolyte, corresponding to the NH 3 yield rate of 640.68 and 302.56 \({\rm{mg}} \cdot {{\rm{h}}^{ - 1}} \cdot {\rm{m}}{{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{cat}}.}}^{ - 1}\) , respectively, which outperforms the Fe and Mo counterpart and other similar catalyst, showing the robust catalytic capacity of each active site.

The investigation about the mechanism of crystal plane regulation on the generation of oxygen vacancies remains a challenge. In this paper, BiOBr/FeMoO 4 composites were synthesized by precise control of crystal plane growth, and it exhibited the enhanced concentration of oxygen vacancies due to lower formation energy of oxygen vacancies. The composite performs higher photo-Fenton-like ability for degrading oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). Structural analyses and theoretical calculations reveal that crystal plane regulation induces significant changes in oxygen vacancy concentration. The BiOBr/FeMoO 4 /peroxydisulphate (PDS) /light system, which dominated by the non-radical pathway, degraded 96.8 % ± 1.0 % of OTC within 30 min. The activation mechanism of the system and the degradation pathway of OTC were elucidated. The intermediates in the degradation process of OTC were evaluated using liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS), toxicity evaluation software tool (T.E.S.T) and soybean germination experiments. This work offers novel insights into the pivotal role of crystal plane directional regulation in the quantitative generation of oxygen vacancies.

Early and accessible detection of tumor biomarkers requires robust colorimetric readouts that can operate in complex matrices. We report flower-like hierarchical FeMoO 4 nanoparticles functioning as a peroxidase-like nanozyme and enable a cascade immunoassay for carcinoembryonic antigen. The nanoparticles were obtained by a solvothermal route and exhibit a single crystalline FeMoO 4 phase with uniform Fe, Mo, and O distributions, mixed Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ states, and a measurable fraction of surface non-lattice oxygen species (O_ads, including hydroxyl-related oxygen and adsorbed/weakly bound oxygen). These features support efficient H 2 O 2 activation and TMB oxidation. FeMoO 4 was integrated with a glucose oxidase (GOx)-based enzyme signal reporter, in which GOx and the detection antibody (Ab2) were co-immobilized on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to form GOx-AuNP-Ab2 conjugate. In a sandwich immunoassay format, the captured enzyme-labeled conjugate generates H 2 O 2 in proportion to the antigen concentration, which is subsequently converted by FeMoO 4 into a stable colorimetric signal at 652 nm. Reaction conditions were optimized for both the chromogenic branch and the enzymatic branch, and kinetic analysis gave Michaelis-Menten behavior with K m values of 0.78 mM for H 2 O 2 and 0.40 mM for TMB. Radical scavenging identified superoxide and hydroxyl radicals as the main active species, with singlet oxygen as a minor contributor. The CEA assay achieved a linear range of 0.1 to 60 ng mL −1 and a limit of detection of 63 pg mL −1 , with a one month retention of 93% of the initial absorbance. Results for six clinical serum samples showed good agreement with a commercial ELISA at the 95% confidence level, and one CEA-negative serum was included as a negative control. These findings establish FeMoO 4 as a stable and manufacturable nanozyme platform for colorimetric immunoassays.

Monitoring the level of heparin in clinical matrices is significant because of its pivotal role in preventing thrombosis. Compared to traditional single-signal sensors, multi-signal ratiometric detection can provide anti-interference results especially in complicated environments. However, fabricating an easy-to-operation, low-cost and robust sensor for the ratiometric detection of heparin still remains challenging. Here we propose a novel nanosensor for the ratiometric multicolor sensing of heparin with high performance. The sensor is based on the specific electrostatic interaction between the target and a positively charged species generated from nanozyme catalysis. FeMoO 4 nanorods are explored as an oxidase mimic for the first time, showing a high activity at neutral pH to catalyze the colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation to blue TMBox with an absorbance at 652 nm. Heparin can induce the rapid aggregation of the produced TMBox intermediate with rich positive charges due to their strong electrostatic interaction, leading to the formation of a purple Heparin-TMBox complex providing a signal at 565 nm. With the increase of heparin, the color changes from blue to indigo and further purple, enabling the multicolor sensing of the target. As a result, ultrasensitive determination of heparin was obtained with a very low detection limit. The fabricated nanosensor could differentiate heparin from complex species with no interferences, and it provided reliable analytical results for heparin in both serum and plasma. With robust performance, low cost and facile fabrication, the sensor holds great potential in monitoring heparin for clinical applications.

Graphical A high-performance heterogeneous N-doped FeMoO 4 -Mo 2 N electrocatalyst was synthesized and applied as HER electrocatalyst in alkaline freshwater and alkaline seawater. Benefiting from the individual properties of both N-doped FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N, the optimized FeMoO 4 -Mo 2 N electrocatalyst requires low overpotentials of 23 and 29 mV to afford 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH freshwater and seawater electrolytes, respectively. Durable and efficient Fe-based electrocatalysts in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis is highly desirable but persists a significant challenge. Herein, we report a durable and robust heterogenous nitrogen-doped FeMoO 4 /Mo 2 N rod-shaped catalyst on nickel foam (denoted NF@FMO/MN) affording hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) low overpotentials of 23/29 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 112/159 mV@100 mA cm −2 in both alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, respectively. These results are significantly superior to the pristine FeMoO 4 catalyst. Theoretical calculations consistently reveals that the combination of N-FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N effectively reduces water activation energy barrier, modulates the sluggish water-dissociation kinetics and accelerates the hydrogen adsorption process for efficient HER. The enhanced HER performance of the as-designed NF@FMO/MN catalyst is attributed to the in situ hetero-interfacial engineering between N-doped FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N. This present work nurtures the progress of FeMo-based electrocatalysts in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis.

Environmental-friendly recovery of critical metals from solid wastes directly for new energy materials received lots of concerns. In this paper, the FeMoO 4 (FMO) materials for new energy storage materials are directly prepared from spent hydrogenation catalysts by “low temperature sodium roasting-water leaching” process. The leaching rates after roasting of main metal element Mo, Al and Ni from wastes are: 91.8 %, 1.7 % and 0.1 %, respectively, then the leachate was directly generated Al-doped FMO materials (Mo/Al = 50:1). As for the application of lithium ion battery anode, the specific capacity is 363.5 mAh/g after 200 cycles, 55 % improvement compared with bare FMO. The tunable phase transformation by roasting temperature regulation is the core to achieve the selective water leaching of Mo, and the intrinsic mechanism have been investigated by calculation and experiments. Finally, the economic evaluation of the whole process shows that for every 1 kg of spent catalyst processed and made into FMO, a profit of $20.8 can be obtained, indicating promising economic benefits. This process provides an environmental technology route for the development of new energy industries under carbon neutrality goals.
