Aims Bacterial infection is a significant factor contributing to the deterioration of wounds, and the misuse of antibiotics has exacerbated bacterial resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a novel antibacterial strategy to replace conventional therapies. This study aims to construct a self-activated cascade reaction nanozyme, f-FeNC@GOx, which triggers a cascade reaction in the presence of glucose. This cascade reaction generates highly toxic hydroxyl radicals ( OH), thereby achieving the goal of eliminating bacteria and promoting wound healing. Material and methods In vitro antibacterial experiments, bacterial spread plate method, Live/Dead staining, and crystal violet staining were conducted to analyze the antibacterial ability and mechanism of f-FeNC@GOx. In vivo experiments, a mouse wound model was established, and H&E and Masson staining of wound tissues were performed to assess the antibacterial activity of the f-FeNC@GOx in vivo . Key findings The in vivo and in vitro experiments confirmed that f-FeNC@GOx exhibited significant antibacterial effect against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in the presence of glucose. Furthermore, it showed optimal wound healing performance in the wound models. Significance These findings suggested that f-FeNC@GOx was a novel and effective antibacterial nanomaterial, which provided a promising antibacterial strategy using nanoenzyme based cascade reaction.

Herein, a series of 3D nitrogen doped porous carbon nanomaterials (FeNC) at different pyrolysis temperature were prepared, followed by a mechanical grinding method to construct magnetically nanocomposite (FeNC/Fe 3 O 4 ) which was demonstrated for the desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in model oils. The FeNC derived from the pyrolysis of iron salt and nitrogen-doped carbon precursors possess abundant porous structure, which is highly active in the physical adsorption of aromatic sulfur derivatives. Impressively, the as-prepared FeNC-700 are evidenced to yield an excellent desulfurization efficiency (95.1% for 200 ppmw), a remarkable estimated adsorption capacity (25.08 mg S/g for 200 ppmw), and a high selectivity for DBT. Theoretical calculation revealed that the adsorption behaviors towards DBT followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, displays a better fitting coefficient based on Langmuir isotherm equation. The thermodynamics results indicate that adsorption process over FeNC-700 was spontaneous and exothermic reaction since ΔG, ΔH, ΔS, all shows negative signs. Subsequently, the FeNC-700 was mechanically mixed with 20 nm Fe 3 O 4 to produce magnetically nanocomposite (FeNC-700/Fe 3 O 4 ) for the adsorption of DBT in a simple separation process by external field and can be regenerated five runs without significant weight loss. Therefore, this strategy greatly simplifies the experimental procedure and favors the regeneration of the adsorbents.

In the pursuit of high-performance proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), obtaining durable Pt-based intermetallic catalysts with small particle sizes for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) stands as a crucial yet challenging topic. Herein, we propose an idea of catalyst design utilizing Fe-phenanthroline (Phen) complex as precursor to integrate metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) with the strong anchoring effect into carbon shells, synthesizing highly ordered and small-sized (3.59 nm) PtFe intermetallic catalyst coated with iron-nitrogen-carbon (FeNC) shells (L1 0 -PtFe@FeNC). The strong Fe-Phen interaction ensures the uniform dispersion of Fe species on Pt seeds so as to form protective shells suppressing the agglomeration and dissolution of PtFe nanoparticles (NPs) under the high-temperature annealing or harsh operational conditions. It exhibits excellent mass activity (MA) that is about five-fold increase compared to the commercial Pt/C, as well as the significantly improved MA retention after 30,000 potential cycles (68.2% vs. 45.3%). Nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) shells and pure carbon (C) shells are used as comparison to demonstrate the advantages of FeNC shells. Durability test results show that NC and C shells obviously degrade after potential cycles, while well-preserved FeNC shells guarantee catalyst stability. Theoretical calculations reveal that the strong binding between FeNC shells and the Pt surface enhances the stability of both the nanoparticles and the FeNC shells.

Enhancing catalytic activity, durability and reducing costs are major challenges in commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Non-precious metal catalysts face durability challenges when applied to PEMFCs, while platinum (Pt)-based catalysts are hampered by their high costs and weak interactions with carbon supports, limiting their application in PEMFCs. Combining Pt-based catalysts with iron-nitrogen-carbon (FeNC) supports can improve the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. However, traditional preparation methods for FeNC supports, such as liquid-phase and hydrothermal synthesis, are cumbersome and have low yield. Here, we introduce a simple ball-milling method to synthesize FeNC with high yield that achieves a high-surface-area and uniform dispersion of Fe atoms. The FeNC support anchors PtFe nanoparticles at FeNₓ sites. This enhances support-alloy interactions and suppresses particle aggregation. The obtained catalyst denoted as PtFe/B-FeNC exhibits an exceptional mass activity of 2.57 A mgPt-1 at 0.9 V, representing a 12.2-fold increase compared to the commercial Pt/C. There is only 30 mV degradation for the catalyst after 120k cycles, indicating outstanding stability. This research paves the way for the green synthesis of PtFe/B-FeNC with high yield, facilitating the development of commercial materials for other electrochemical devices.

Aqueous zinc-iodine batteries have garnered increasing attention due to their low cost and high safety. However, their practical application is impeded by sluggish iodine redox reaction kinetics and the “shuttle effect” of polyiodides, which result in poor rate performance and limited cycled life. Here, we developed N -doped porous carbon fiber derived from Prussian blue and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a self-supporting cathode material for zinc-iodine batteries. The material demonstrates a high iodine adsorption capacity in the electrolyte solution. Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the prepared materials demonstrate good catalytic activity. Furthermore, the interconnected carbon fiber network, characterized by high conductivity and a large specific surface area, facilitates rapid electron transport and ion diffusion. Consequently, the zinc-iodine battery demonstrates outstanding rate performance (148mAh g −1 at a high current density of 10 A g −1 ) and a long cycling life of 50,000 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 72.1 %. Additionally, the battery achieves an impressive calendar life of 8 months and 23 days.

This research explores the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) in combating chemotherapy-resistant diseases. This study focuses on enhancing tumor treatment effectiveness by leveraging the synergetic effects of combining PDT and PTT through the development of Fe-nitrogen-carbon (FeNC) nanoparticles with superior photostability. These nanoparticles, functioning as photosensitizers for the combined PDT/PTT treatment, can generate both type I and type II ROS and heat upon 808 nm irradiation. Notably, the FeNC nanoparticles demonstrate an exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency (34 %), surpassing commonly used PTT photosensitizers. In vitro and in vivo experiments corroborate the efficiency of FeNC as a photosensitizer in achieving significant tumor inhibition. In conclusion, the FeNC nanoparticles present promising applicability in the synergistic PTT/PDT treatment of tumors.

The proof-of-concept of sensitive electrochemical immunoassay for the quantitative monitoring of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is reported. The assay is carried out on iron nitrogen-doped carbon (FeNC) nanozyme-modified screen-printed carbon electrode using chronoamperometry. Introduction of target HER2 can induce the sandwiched immunoreaction between anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody-coated microplate and biotinylated anti-HER2 polyclonal antibody. Thereafter, streptavidin-glucose oxidase (GOx) conjugate is bonded to the detection antibody. Upon addition of glucose, 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) is oxidized through the produced H 2 O 2 with the assistance of GOx and FeNC nanozyme. The oxidized TMB is determined via chronoamperometry. Experimental results revealed that electrochemical immunosensing system exhibited good amperometric response, and allowed the detection of target HER2 as low as 4.5 pg/mL. High specificity and long-term stability are acquired with FeNC nanozyme-based sensing strategy. Importantly, our system provides a new opportunity for protein diagnostics. Graphical Abstract

Fe–N–C has a high number of FeNx active sites and has thus been regarded as a high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, and combining Fe3C with Fe–N–C typically boosts ORR activity. However, the catalytic mechanism remains unknown, limiting further research and development. In this study, a precipitation-solvothermal process was used in conjunction with pyrolysis to produce a series of Fe–N–C catalysts derived from a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) that was composited with Fe3C. The prepared catalysts had a multiscale structure of ZIF-like carbon particles and rod-like structures, as well as bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon layers wrapped with Fe3C particles while a series of studies revealed the origin of the rod-like structures and Fe3C phase. The hierarchical structure was beneficial to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance of catalysts for ORR. The optimal sample had the highest half-wave potential of 0.878 V vs. RHE, which was higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.861 V vs. RHE). The ECSA of the optimal sample was 1.08 cm2 μg−1, with an electron transfer number close to 4, and functioning kinetics. The optimal sample exhibited high durability and methanol tolerance for the ORR. Finally, blocking different Fe active sites with coordination ions demonstrated that Fe(II) was the main active site, indicating that Fe3C primarily served as a cocatalyst to optimize the electron structure of Fe–N–C, thereby synergistically improving the ORR activity.

Selective electro-oxidation of glycerol to value-added chemicals has attracted much attention both for the upgrading of biodiesel industry and the coupled electrolytic hydrogen production . Here we report Pt nanoparticles decorated, Fe- and N co-doped carbon nanotube (Pt/FeNC) catalyst for the selective electro-oxidation of glycerol to tartronate, one of the valuable chemicals used in pharmaceuticals. In a high concentrated glycerol solution of 5.0 M, the Pt/FeNC catalyst reaches the glycerol conversion of 94% and tartronate yield over 47% at 0.9 V vs. RHE, equivalent to a tartronate production rate of 1182 mmol/h/gPt, about 20 times of the highest value ever reported in a batch electrocatalytic reactor. The valence band analysis and kinetic experiments reveal that the FeNC mediates the adsorption behavior of the glycerate intermediate on Pt surface, and promotes the glycerate-to-tartronate oxidation . Moreover, the anchoring effect of FeNC ensures the stable catalytic performance for ten cycles.

The application of single-atom nanozymes in the removal of organic dye pollution by advanced oxidation process (AOPs) have been widely concerned. However, the application of single-atom nanozymes in AOPs is rarely reported. In this work, a kind of Fe-and nitrogen-codoped carbon (Fe-N-C) with peroxidase-like and laccase-like activities was prepared by calcining Fe-doped MOF, then the chiral peptides were introduced into single-atom nanozymes, and chiral single-atom nanozymes (L-Au@FeNC) were successfully prepared. The L-Au@FeNC can effectively activate PMS to degrade different kinds of organic dyes and also shows high cycle stability. In addition, the results of quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test show that 1 O 2 produced during PMS activation plays an important role in the degradation of organic dyes, and O 2 ·- , ·OH, and SO 4 ·- are also produced during PMS activation, suggesting that the degradation of selected organic dyes include radical and non-radical pathways. It should be noted that L-Au@FeNC showed higher activity than D-Au@FeNC in enzyme-like activity (laccase-like and peroxidase-like) experiment and organic dye degradation, the results of molecular docking simulation indicated that it may be due to the better binding force of L peptide to the substrate of enzyme-like reaction and organic dye than D peptide. This chiral single-atom nanozymes provide a new idea for the application of organic dye degradation and enzyme-like catalysis design.

Massive production of efficient, durable, and low-cost electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is urgently desired for the development of energy storage and conversion devices. In this study, a facile and cost-effective strategy is proposed for the scalable synthesis of atomically dispersed Fe N C derived from petroleum asphalt (Fe N C@PA) as a reinforced catalyst for ORR. The Fe N C@PA is fabricated through a layer-by-layer cladding template and subsequent pyrolysis method. Intercalating appropriate amount of petroleum asphalt not only improves the graphitic degree to reinforce the atomic Fe−N x active sites, but also increases mass yield of the catalyst (~220%) compared with the Fe N C counterpart. Serving as an ORR electrocatalyst, the optimized Fe N C@PA-1:4 provides almost a four-electron transfer pathway (3.96) and exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity with a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.90 V to the commercial Pt/C catalyst (E 1/2 = 0.86 V), as well as promoted durability and methanol tolerance in alkaline medium. Moreover, the zinc-air battery based on Fe N C@PA-1:4 cathode delivers a high power density of 166.7 mW cm −2 . This work may help the massive production of robust atomically dispersed non-noble metal catalysts for ORR and provide a new avenue for the high value-added utilization of petroleum asphalt.

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton (HEF) reaction has been considered as a promising process for real effluent treatments. However, the design of effective catalysts for simultaneous H2O2 generation and activation to achieve bifunctional catalysis for O2 toward •OH production remains a challenge. Herein, a core–shell structural Fe-based catalyst (FeNC@C), with Fe3C and FeN nanoparticles encapsulated by porous graphitic layers, was synthesized and employed in a HEF system. The FeNC@C catalyst presented a significant performance in degradation of various chlorophenols at various conditions with an extremely low level of leached iron. Electron spin resonance and radical scavenging revealed that •OH was the key reactive species and FeIV would play a role at neutral conditions. Experimental and density function theory calculation revealed the dominated role of Fe3C in H2O2 generation and the positive effect of FeNx sites on H2O2 activation to form •OH. Meanwhile, FeNC@C was proved to be less pH dependence, high stability, and well-recycled materials for practical application in wastewater purification.
