Using carbonized hybrid FeNPs@ZIF-8 for the sustained release of doxorubicin hydrochloride

Yaling Ye,Longwei Yin,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Controlling the slow release of drugs in carriers and reducing environmental pollution and damage from antibiotics is important and challenging research. In this paper, a novel composite material of carbonized FeNPs@ZIF-8 (C-Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8) was used to load and release doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). Compared with conventional ZIFs materials, greatly enhancing the magnetic properties , drug loading capacity and controlled drug release of the carrier agent. Interestingly, by establishing a dual stimulus response system with environmental factors of pH and temperature, results showed release rate of 61.6 % at a pH of 3 and a temperature of 37 °C. In addition, the SEM-EDS results showed that the surface of C-Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 was partially broken but maintained a stable morphology before and after release. Meanwhile the nitrogen absorption desorption curve (BET) and hysteresis loop reveal that C-Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 can maintain a large specific surface area and a magnetization intensity of 12.4 emu g −1 after release. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), on the other hand, reveal the presence of partial ligand and hydrogen bond breaks during the release of DOX from DOX-loaded C-Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8. Finally, the release of DOX from C-Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 at different pH and temperature is consistent with the Higuch and Bhaskas models, where the latter dominates and proposes a release mechanism. Therefore, the magnetic composite C-Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 in this study has great potential for DOX to effectively control drug release and targeted cancer therapy.

New insights on removal mechanism of 17α-estradiol based on adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation by FeNPs/rGO

Longjie Liu,Jiajiang Lin,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Wastewater from sewage treatment plants containing 17α-estradiol (αE 2 ) has a high potential to cause environmental and human toxicity. Integration of adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation is one of the potential approaches to enhance αE 2 removal. In this study, one-step biosynthesized iron nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (FeNPs/rGO) by tea extract was successfully used for αE 2 removal. The results showed that the removal of αE 2 by FeNPs/rGO increased to 56.1%, being only 25.4% and 45.4% for rGO and FeNPs, respectively, indicating that both adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation enhanced the removal of αE 2 , where was confirmed by HPLC-UV. To understand the removal mechanism, characterizations, including ESR, SEM, EDS, FTIR and XPS were used to elucidate the specific roles of rGO and FeNPs in the adsorption and oxidation of αE 2 , and results showed that αE 2 was adsorbed as a monolayer on the surface of rGO via π–π bond interactions and that FeNPs underwent reactions with H 2 O 2 to generate ·OH for αE 2 degradation. Thereafter, a αE 2 degradation pathway was proposed via identification of degradation products (e.g., C 18 H 22 O 3 ) by HPLC-MS. Moreover, the removal of αE 2 by FeNPs/rGO conformed to the Langmuir isotherm with pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics and pseudo-second-order degradation kinetics. Based on these evidences, the removal of αE 2 by FeNPs/rGO was presented.

FeNPs@Co3O4 hollow nanocages hybrids as effective peroxidase mimics for glucose biosensing

Jia Zhao,Wenfei Dong,Xiaodan Zhang,Hongxiang Chai,Yuming Huang

Constructing hollow mesoporous nanostructures for dispersing catalytically active sites has attracted growing interest. Here, for the first time, Co 3 O 4 hollow nanocages (Co 3 O 4 HNCs) derived from ZIF-67 were prepared for loading iron nanoparticles (FeNPs), resulting in FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 hollow nanocages (FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 HNCs). FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 HNCs were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and FT-IR. The FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 HNCs composites could catalyze the oxidation of TMB into blue product by H 2 O 2 , showing better peroxidase-like activity than FeNPs and Co 3 O 4 HNCs. Notably, kinetic studies indicated that FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 HNCs behaved an excellent affinity to H 2 O 2 with K m value of 0.019 mM, which was 195 times lower than that of HRP. On this basis, a facile colorimetric biosensing method was established to detect glucose. The linear range was 0.5–30 μM, and the limit of detection was 0.05 μM. The proposed sensor was successfully used to determine glucose in human serum samples. The highly catalytic performance of FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 HNCs is attributed to its porous hollow structure, which is beneficial for dispersion of in situ formed FeNPs and for reducing the agglomeration. Further, the FeNPs@Co 3 O 4 HNCs catalysts with porous character provide an essential way to expose active sites as far as possible to the substrate and increase the catalytic active sites.

What are the different biomolecules involved in the selective recovery of REEs from mining wastewater using FeNPs synthesized from two plant extracts?

Xinmiao Xu,Zhenjun Zhang,Xiulan Weng,Zuliang Chen

Extracting rare earth elements (REEs) from wastewater is crucial for saving the environment, sustainable use of natural resources and economic growth. Reported here is a simple, low cost and one-step synthesis of Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs) based on two plant extracts having the ability to recover REEs. The synthesis of FeNPs using Excoecaria cochinchinensis leaves extract (Ec-FeNPs) exhibited high selectivity for heavy rare earth due to unique biomolecules, achieving separation coefficients (K d ) of 3.16 × 10 3 –4.04 × 10 6  mL/g and recovery efficiencies ranging from 71.7 to 100 %. Conversely, the synthesis of FeNPs using Pinus massoniana lamb extract (PML-FeNPs) revealed poorer REE recovery efficiencies of 7.2–86.7 %. To understand the differences between Ec-FeNPs and PML-FeNPs in terms of selectivity and efficiency, LC-QTOF-MS served to analyze the biomolecules differences of two plant extracts. In addition, various types of characterization were carried out to identify the different functional groups encapsulated on the surface of FeNPs. These results reveal the source of the difference in the selectivity of Ec-FeNPs and PML-FeNPs for REEs. Furthermore, during DFT calculations, it was found that biomolecules with varying affinities for the surface of FeNPs interact with each other, leading to the formation of structures that exhibit high reactivity towards REEs. Finally, incorporating Spearman correlation analysis demonstrates that the selective removal efficiency of REEs was closely linked to surface complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic adsorption. Consequently, this work strongly highlights the potential for the practical application of novel adsorbents in this field.

A portable smartphone platform with FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme for visual and on-site sensing of F− and Al3+ in tea

Yanyang Wang,Shanshan Gao,Gege Yang,Wenyi Zhu,Ying Lu,Mengyuan Tan,Yuancheng Peng,Hua Yang,Chunxia Song

A portable platform for the visual determination of F− and Al3+ was developed by combining FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme and a smartphone. The FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme with excellent peroxidase activity was synthesized through the in situ growth of Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs) on graphite-phase carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4), which could catalyze H2O2 to oxidize TMB to blue oxide (oxTMB). The peroxidase activity of the FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme could be inhibited by F−, and then restored by Al3+ because of the coordination reaction between Fe3+/Al3+ and F−. Furthermore, the solution color could be dynamically manipulated by changing the concentrations of F− and Al3+. Under optimal conditions, the developed method gave low detection limits of 2.43 nM for F− and 7.66 μM for Al3+. The cooperation of nano-enzyme and smartphone has greatly shortened the detection time and reduced the cost of detection, providing a new strategy for the on-site and convenient detection of F− and Al3+ in tea, and showed significant application potential in food safety evaluation.

Green rGO/FeNPs nanocomposites activated peroxydisulfate for the removal of mixed 17β-estradiol and estriol

Longjie Liu,Zeyang Lu,Wanling Cai,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Reduced graphene oxide/iron nanoparticles (rGO/FeNPs) synthesized by the chemical method have been used in Fenton oxidation of organic contaminants , yet little is known about biosynthesized rGO/FeNPs using green tea extract (GT) as how to activate persulfate in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes . In this study, rGO/FeNPs were used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for 17β-estradiol (βE 2 ) and estriol (E 3 ) removal. The rGO/FeNPs-PDS system removed 83.6% of βE 2 and 62.5% of E 3 within 240 min, which was confirmed by a combination of adsorption and degradation via both radical and non-radical pathways. Four main reactive species in βE 2 and E 3 degradation were observed, i.e., hydroxyl radical (·OH), sulfate radical (SO 4 ·− ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and electron transfer , with the respective contributions of ·OH (32.9 and 34.7%), SO 4 ·− (16.1 and 19.7%), 1 O 2 (12.2 and 14.1%) and electron transfer (8.0 and 7.2%). Analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and electrochemical measurements all indicated that beside the well-known role of Fe, C O from rGO through the generation of ·OH, SO 4 ·− , 1 O 2 and electron transfer, as well as GT through electron transfer also participated in the activation of PDS. Finally, the degradation pathways of βE 2 /E 3 were proposed. Overall, this study provides a new insight into the biosynthesis of rGO/FeNPs to activate PDS for the oxidation of mixed emerging contaminants .

Removal mechanism of Sb(V) by a hybrid ZIF-8@FeNPs and used for treatment of mining wastewater

Chao Xue,Qu Zhang,Wenpeng Li,Gary Ownes,Zuliang Chen

The removal of antimonate (Sb(V)) species from wastewaters has become a growing concern due to their known genotoxicity and carcinogenicity. In this paper, a hybrid ZIF-8@FeNPs material was synthesized from Zeolite Imidazole Framework-8 (ZIF-8) and zero-valent iron nanoparticles ( n ZVI) and subsequently used to remove Sb(V) from aqueous solution. Characterization indicated that ZIF-8@FeNPs were successfully synthesized and that the valence state of Sb(V) did not change during the removal process, where adsorption of Sb(V) was facilitated by the high specific surface area and porosity of the hybrid. Advanced characterization also showed that Zn-OH and iron oxides were adsorbed on the material after complexation with Sb(V). Kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic modeling indicated that the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, via multilayer adsorption which was spontaneous and endothermic. A Sb(V) removal mechanism based on adsorption was proposed. In mining wastewater containing 1.121 mg·L −1 Sb(V), 89.7 % could be removed by the material. During repeated reuse of ZIF-8@FeNPs for the removal of 1 mg·L −1 Sb(V) through four successive cycles, the removal efficiency was still relatively high (39.1 %) after the fourth cycle indicating good potential for practical applications. In addition, ZIF-8@FeNPs also exhibited magnetic properties, which demonstrated that Sb(V) could be easily recovered from wastewater post removal by ZIF-8@FeNPs.

An antibody-free sensing strategy based on FeNPs@Pt and thiol-Michael addition: Visual detection of acrylamide in food

Liu Yang,Baoshan He,Ming Lu,Zhengyong Liang,Yao Liu,Wenjie Ren,Yiwei Xu

The core–shell FeNPs@Pt shows excellent catalytic activity and stability. • Selective detection via thiol–Michael addition without enzymes or aptamers. • The color development is rapid and convenient, taking only 150 s to complete. • The suppression–recovery mechanism amplifies the signal and enhances sensitivity. In this study, we propose an innovative Acrylamide (AA) detection platform based on platinum-coated magnetic iron nanoparticles (FeNPs@Pt). The introduction of a platinum shell not only preserves the intrinsic catalytic properties of FeNPs but also significantly enhances their structural stability and catalytic activity. Compared with traditional antibody–aptamer-based detection methods, this platform employs a thiol–Michael addition reaction combined with a nanocatalyst-mediated cascade colorimetric process. This approach overcomes key limitations of antibody–aptamer technologies, such as high cost and operational complexity, enabling rapid and low-cost detection of AA. The mechanism involves a specific Michael addition reaction between AA and 2,2′-(ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol (EDT), which mitigates the inhibitory effect of EDT on the catalytic activity of FeNPs@Pt. Subsequently, the addition of 3,3′-dimethylbenzidine (TMB) triggers a colorimetric reaction within 150 s, rendering the result visible to the naked eye. This sensing platform exhibits a linear response over the range of 1–200 μM, with a detection limit as low as 0.63 μM. Notably, the FeNPs@Pt–EDT–TMB-based colorimetric detection platform not only provides an efficient and low-cost method for acrylamide detection but also offers an innovative solution for on-site food safety monitoring, demonstrating significant application potential. A self-assembled FeNPs/metal polyphenol structured superhydrophilic PVDF membrane with capability to activate PMS for efficient oil-water separation

Yinan Chen,Qi Peng,Chengwen Song,Yuanlu Xu,Zaijin You,Xinfei Fan

Despite the membrane technology as an efficient method for treating emulsified oily wastewater, the issue of membrane fouling remains an enormous challenge during extended operation. Hence, a unique self-assembled method was proposed to clean membrane fouling for oil/water (O/W) separation, where the tannic acid/iron (TA/Fe) coating layer improved hydrophilicity and doped with iron nanoparticles to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing of the irreversible oil fouling. The TA/Fe coating, which contained phenolic hydroxyl groups, rendered the modified membrane superhydrophilic and underwater oleophobic properties to resist membrane surface oil droplets. The iron nanoparticles/TA/polyvinylidene fluoride (FeNPs/TA/PVDF) achieved notable permeation flux of 1571.13 L m −2 h −1 and 1490 L m −2 h −1 in O/W mixture and oil-in-water emulsion (liquid paraffin as oil phase), respectively. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited a distinguished oil removal rate, surpassing 98 % for various emulsions (e.g. N-hexane, isooctane, soybean oil). Notably, in the pollution and cyclic experiments, the regeneration water flux of FeNPs/TA/PVDF increased from 71.7 % of pristine PVDF to 91.5 % after final modification, which proved the enhancement of the membrane anti-oil-fouling capability through the deposition of the hydrophilic coating. Moreover, after catalytic cleaning, the water permeation flux of FeNPs/TA/PVDF could reach approximately 90 % of its original value. Obviously, we observed that FeNPs/TA/PVDF exhibited a high regenerative capacity during the PMS-assisted catalytic cleaning process, where the radical and nonradical pathways coexisted. Generally, the research offered a simple approach to creating functional membranes suitable for efficient O/W separation.

Recovery and removal of rare earth elements from mine wastewater using synthesized bio-nanoparticles derived from Bacillus cereus

Qiuting Yan,Yalin Yang,Wei Chen,Xiulan Weng,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

The efficient removal and recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mine wastewater is highly desirable due to the increasing public demands to both protect the environment and recover valuable REEs resources. In this study, bio-nanoparticles ( BC @FeNPs-EPS), which combined extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) were synthesized via Bacillus cereus and used to remove REEs such as Eu(III) from mine wastewaters. The removal efficiency of BC @FeNPs-EPS (90.2%) was consistently higher than the removal efficiencies of the three constituent components alone, FeNPs (85%), Free cell (67%) and EPS (10%) exhibited. SEM and XPS analysis indicated the existence of substantial organic capping agents derived from microorganisms on the FeNPs, where comparison of FTIR spectra before and after exposure to Eu(III) showed changes in both wavenumber and peak intensity of these various organic functional groups suggesting the formation of surface complexes with Eu(III), whereas Zeta potential measurements of the material also supported electrostatic interactions between Eu(III) and BC @FeNPs-EPS. Adsorption kinetics almost perfectly correlated with the non-linear pseudo-second-order model. Collectively, these results indicated that the removal mechanism for Eu(III) by BC @FeNPs-EPS involved both surface complexation and ion exchange and the additive effect removal of Eu(III) by FeNPs, Free cell and EPS. In addition, the practical removal efficiency of a range of REEs from real mine wastewaters by BC @FeNPs-EPS was consistently high being 88% for Eu(III), 89% for Tb(III) and 89% for Ce(III). The material produced was also highly reusable, maintaining a high Eu(III) removal rate (69%) even after 5 consecutive removal cycles.

Microbial synthesized iron nanoparticles after recovering rare earth elements used for removing arsenic in mine groundwater

Qiuting Yan,Zhenjun Zhang,Zuliang Chen

Recycling rare earth elements (REEs) from secondary sources such as mine wastewater has emerged as a sustainable economic strategy. In this study, microbial synthesized iron nanoparticles after the recovery of rare earth elements (FeNPs/REEs) have been used as an environmentally friendly material to remove arsenic from mine groundwater. The removal efficiencies of As(III) and As(V) were 94.5% and 96.0%, respectively, compared to that of As(III) (44.5%) and As(V) (66.5%) using only FeNPs. Indicated here is that the efficiency of FeNPs/REEs in removing arsenic was better than those of FeNPs. IC-AFS and XPS analysis showed that As(III) was partially oxidized to As(V) during the adsorption process via electron transfer. Electrochemical and BET indicated that FeNPs/REEs not only helped to expose more active sites but also the catalytic activity was enhanced. Meanwhile SEM-Mapping and FTIR demonstrated that arsenic was adsorbed onto the surface of FeNPs/REEs through complexation and ion exchange. Furthermore, Zeta potential analysis revealed electrostatic interactions between arsenic and FeNPs/REEs at pH = 6.0. Thus, the key physicochemical properties for the removal of As(III) and As(V) by FeNPs/REEs were statistically analyzed via Pearson correlation analysis, in order to understand the removal mechanism of arsenic involving surface complexation, oxidation, electrostatic and ion exchange. Finally, efficiency was consistently high in removing arsenic from mine groundwater using FeNPs/REEs with As (73.0%), Pb (76.0%), and Fe (36.0%). This study generates a new insight into FeNPs/REEs used in groundwater remediation.
