Binderless and Oxygen Vacancies Rich FeNi/Graphitized Mesoporous Carbon/Ni Foam for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrate

Xiaotong Chen,Ting Zhang,Miao Kan,Dinggui Song,Jinping Jia,Yixin Zhao,Xufang Qian

Energy consumption and long-term stability of a cathode are two important aspects of great concern in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction. This work studied a binderless FeNi/graphitized mesoporous carbon directly formed on Ni Foam (FeNi/g-mesoC/NF, 7.3 wt % of Fe) and evaluated its electrocatalytic nitrate reduction performance. We proposed a unique structure model of FeNi/g-mesoC/NF cathode in which FeNi alloy nanoparticles were uniformly embedded in mesoporous carbon and graphitized carbon shells were coated on isolated alloy nanoparticles. Oxygen vacancies (OVs) in FeNi oxide passivating layer facilitate the conversion of NO3–-N anions on cathode. Toxic NO2–-N was almost undetected due to the synergetic effects of FeNi electrocatalysis, and the NO3–-N conversion was high in comparation with ever reported iron-based cathode. The NO3–-N conversion showed ultrahigh electrocatalytic stability during one-month-recycling test while the physiochemical properties showed negligible change for FeNi/g-mesoC/NF except the increase of OVs. The energy consumption to treat simulated underground water (50% of NO3–-N conversion) was low (0.7 kWh mol–1) for 50 mg L–1 NO3–-N. This binderless composite cathode shows great potential in electrocatalytic NO3–-N removal in underground water.

The Scalable Solid-State Synthesis of a Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi Alloy Encapsulated into a Hierarchical Porous Carbon Framework for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Xiangyun Tian,Peng Yi,Junwei Sun,Caiyun Li,Rongzhan Liu,Jian-Kun Sun

The exploration of high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for large-scale water/seawater splitting. Herein, we develop a strategy involving the in situ generation of a template and pore-former to encapsulate a Ni5P4/Ni2P heterojunction and dispersive FeNi alloy hybrid particles into a three-dimensional hierarchical porous graphitic carbon framework (labeled as Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C) via a room-temperature solid-state grinding and sodium-carbonate-assisted pyrolysis method. The synergistic effect of the components and the architecture provides a large surface area with a sufficient number of active sites and a hierarchical porous pathway for efficient electron transfer and mass diffusion. Furthermore, a graphitic carbon coating layer restrains the corrosion of alloy particles to boost the long-term durability of the catalyst. Consequently, the Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C catalyst exhibits extraordinary OER activity with a low overpotential of 242 mV (10 mA cm−2), outperforming the commercial RuO2catalyst in 1 M KOH. Meanwhile, a scale-up of the Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C catalyst created by a ball-milling method displays a similar level of activity to the above grinding method. In 1 M KOH + seawater electrolyte, Ni5P4/Ni2P–FeNi@C also displays excellent stability; it can continuously operate for 160 h with a negligible potential increase of 2 mV. This work may provide a new avenue for facile mass production of an efficient electrocatalyst for water/seawater splitting and diverse other applications. Keywords:FeNi alloy;Ni5P4/Ni2P heterojunction;solid-state grinding;in situ template;oxygen evolution reaction

Facile synthesis of FeNi nanoparticle-loaded carbon nanocomposite fibers for enhanced microwave absorption performance

Jinhu Hu,Zhengguo Jiao,Xukang Han,Jiao Liu,Mingliang Ma,Jialin Jiang,Yongbo Hou,Xingyue Wang,Chao Feng,Yong Ma

The advantages of Fe, Ni metals and one-dimensional (1D) carbon materials are combined in this study using a simple method to prepare FeNi/C nanofibers for electromagnetic microwave (EM) absorption. The prepared FeNi/C nanofibers exhibit excellent EM absorption performance under dielectric/magnetic synergistic effect. At a frequency of 13.3 GHz, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) reaches -57.15 dB, and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is as high as 4.0 GHz (12.5–16.5 GHz), with a thickness and filling rate of only 1.6 mm and 30 wt.%, respectively. Analysis shows that the EM absorption performance of FeNi/C nanofibers far exceeds that of single-component nanofibers and pure carbon fibers, and the excellent EM absorption performance is due to its unique microstructure and excellent electromagnetic properties. The FeNi alloy loaded on carbon nanofibers forms rich heterogeneous interfaces, and the three-dimensional (3D) conductive network composed of 1D carbon fibers increases the migration path of electrons. In addition, FeNi alloy, as an impedance regulation factor, strengthens the dielectricity of the carbon matrix while providing multidimensional magnetism, achieving impedance matching. This work is thought to contribute to the promotion of emerging absorbers by providing a novel strategy for the development of new 1D magnetic carbon-based high-performance EM absorbing materials.

Soft magnetic properties of nano-SiO2 coated FeNi alloy powder at high frequencies

Zhang Cong,Liu Xiansong,Kan Xucai,Feng Shuangjiu,Zhu Yong,Yang Yujie,Zhang Zongyang

Soft magnetic composites serve in electrical applications and sustainable energy supply, the magnetic flux changes in response to changes of the applied magnetic field, with energy loss. To reduce the loss, in this paper, the soft magnetic composite Fe 50 Ni 50 powder coated with nano-SiO 2 was prepared by tetraethoxysilane sol–gel method, and the microstructure of the coating was characterized. Then, soft magnetic Fe 50 Ni 50 powder cores have been prepared, and annealed with different atmospheres. The power loss is lower when the magnetic cores were annealed in a reducing hydrogen atmosphere. The lowest power loss (1390.7 mW/cm 3 , f  = 1000 kHz, B  = 50 mT, 120 °C) was obtained when the cores annealed at 730 °C in H 2 atmosphere. The results show that the eddy current loss is significantly reduced by coating SiO 2 , and the power loss is reduced about 33% in high-frequency (1 MHz and 50 mT, 25 °C). From 25 to 120 °C, the power loss at 1 MHz decreases by about 33% due to the reduction of hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. The excellent properties are very applicable for the inductors of 5G technology.

N, S co-doped carbon with embedment of FeNi alloy as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zinc-air batteries

Run Wu,Xixi Wang,Lei Ge,Zehao Zheng,Yijun Zhu,Chuan Zhou,Jinglin Yuan,Shiliang Zhu,Yuxing Gu,Wei Zhou,Zongping Shao

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have sparked great interest, but their wide-ranging applications are limited by sluggish cathode reactions (ORR and OER). In this work, a multifunctional 3D catalyst (FeNi alloy/porous carbon) was easily fabricated by introducing Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ to modulate in-situ vapor phase grown carbon nanotubes. The as-prepared catalyst FNSNC73-800 displays abundant mesoporous, massive structural defects , and multiple active sites, which greatly facilitate the transport of oxygen species and charge transfer during the reaction. Due to the excellent ORR and OER performance, FNSNC73-800 shows a narrow voltage gap (Δ E ) of 0.76 V, which is superior to recent reports. Notably, the secondary zinc-air battery with this catalyst displays a high-peak power density (210 mW cm −2 ), while maintaining an ultra-low potential gap (0.74 V) after a long-term charge-discharge cycle of 200 h. This effort presents a facile strategy for designing economical and efficient 3D catalysts for zinc-air batteries and more energy devices.

Amorphous FeNi alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in N doped carbon shell induced by laser irradiation with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for water oxidation

Zhengquan Su,Chao Zhang,Jun Liu,Changhao Liang

Tuning crystal structure of metal nanomaterials is an effective approach to optimize electrocatalytic performance. Here, we employ amorphous FeNi alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in N doped carbon shell (A-FeNi@NC) as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) via laser irradiation in H 2 O. The formation mechanism of amorphous FeNi alloy is due to the rapid heating and cooling rate result from the pulse laser. The following electrochemical measurements indicate that A-FeNi@NC displays much better OER activity compared with the conventional crystalline FeNi alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in N doped carbon shell (C-FeNi@NC). We proposed that amorphous FeNi alloy possess favorable electronic property to optimize electronic state of the external carbon shell and give rise to a higher electrocatalytic activity towards OER. The optimized electronic state of the external carbon shell commonly exists in other amorphous transition metal include FeCo, CoNi and Ni, give birth to a series of efficient electrocatalysts for OER.

FeNi alloy electrode assisted PMS activation strategy for degradation of trimethoprim: Charge separation mechanism and theoretical calculation

Yuanchuan Ren,Yan Hu,Nanqi Ren,Fenghui Wu,Dandan Chen,Xuejun Zhu,Qiang Niu

FeNi binary metal alloy anchored foam carbon composite electrode was successfully constructed by electrodeposition self-assembly strategy (FeNi@CF). FeNi with heterogeneous structure serves as a charge transfer bridge, promoting charge separation. The degradation efficiency of TMP within 20 min was 98.15 % (k = 0.1935 min −1 ). The contribution of active components to TMP degradation follows the order of SO 4 − · (63.22 %)>·OH (39.55 %)>·O 2 – (9.33 %)> 1 O 2 (5.27 %), which is consistent with the proposed charge separation mechanism. DFT calculations show that the introduction of FeNi alloy can disrupt the sp2 hybrid structure of carbon in graphite electrodes, resulting in the formation of nucleophilic and electrophilic atomic centers on their surfaces, reducing the steric hindrance of PMS adsorption (E ads  = −3.28 eV), enhancing the adsorption strength of PMS, increasing the area of active centers, and improving the activation efficiency of PMS. The free radical quenching and intermediate identification experiments further confirmed the mechanism and pathway of TMP degradation. In addition, FeNi@CF has good repeatability and stability, making it suitable for treating pollutants in various water matrices. This work is expected to provide ideas for risk assessment of various toxic and persistent organic pollutants in drinking water and wastewater.

FeNi alloys supported on nitrogen-enriched carbon nanospheres as efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zinc-air battery

Tao Yu,Shan Su,Yiting Che,Chunfeng Meng,Hu Zhou,Shitan Yan,KABENGA Patrick Ranson,Ting Bian,Aihua Yuan

The development of high-performance transition metal catalysts to replace precious metal catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) reactions is essential and challenging. Rational embedding of transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) into nitrogen-enriched carbon frameworks to obtain bifunctional catalysts is a well-established approach. Here, we have successfully prepared an integrated electrocatalyst consisting of nitrogen-enriched porous carbon nanospheres and FeNi alloy NPs (P-FeNi/NC) by carbonizing the Hofmann-type FeNi metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) coated with polydopamine (PDA). Benefiting from the abundant ORR-active pyridinic-N species and OER-active FeNi alloy NPs, large surface area, and porous carbon framework, P-FeNi/NC-900 demonstrates a competitive ORR/OER activity (E 1/2  = 0.85 V, E j=10 mA cm-2  = 1.62 V). When applied as the air electrode, the discharging specific capacity normalized to the mass of consumed Zn is 817.2 mAh g −1 at 10 mA cm −2 and the corresponding maximum power density is 164 mW cm −2 . Integration of nitrogen-enriched carbon framework and bimetallic alloys provides a new avenue for the rational preparation of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis for high-efficiency energy conversion and storage devices.

Revolutionizing Zn-Air batteries with chainmail catalysts: Ultrathin carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloys on N-doped graphene for enhanced oxygen electrocatalysis

Yibo Guo,Yuanyuan Xue,Zhen Zhou

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) pose significant challenges for the viability of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Developing efficient, cost-effective, stable, and dual-purpose oxygen electrocatalysts remains a formidable hurdle. In this study, we successfully synthesized a highly promising chainmail catalyst named FeNi@NC, comprising ultrathin carbon shells encapsulating FeNi alloy nanoparticles on N-doped graphene-like nanosheets . The strong synergistic effects between FeNi alloys and N-doped carbon shells result in outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity, particularly in alkaline media. Consequently, Zn-air batteries incorporating FeNi@NC as the catalyst demonstrate exceptional performance, operating reliably at high power density with extended lifespan. Furthermore, computational analyses provided further confirmation of the catalytic activity and revealed that the electron transfer from FeNi alloy nanoparticles to the carbon shells activates the carbon surface , leading to enhanced catalytic performance. This research not only sheds light on the rational design and synthesis of heteroatom-doped carbon materials supporting the growth-constrained transition metal alloys but also offers a practical solution for advancing the application of Zn-air batteries.

Customization of FeNi alloy nanosheet arrays inserted with biomass-derived carbon templates for boosted electromagnetic wave absorption

Yang Xuanqi,Wang Honghan,Chen Jing,An Qingda,Xiao Zuoyi,Hao Jingai,Zhai Shangru,Sheng Junye

Electromagnetic wave (EMW)-absorbing materials have considerable capacity in the military field and the prevention of EMW radiation from harming human health. However, obtaining lightweight, high-performance, and broadband EMW-absorbing material remains an overwhelming challenge. Creating dielectric/magnetic composites with customized structures is a strategy with great promise for the development of high-performance EMW-absorbing materials. Using layered double hydroxides as the precursors of bimetallic alloys and combining them with porous biomass-derived carbon materials is a potential way for constructing multi-interface heterostructures as efficient EMW-absorbing materials because they have synergistic losses, low costs, abundant resources, and light weights. Here, FeNi alloy nanosheet array/ Lycopodium spore-derived carbon (FeNi/LSC) was prepared through a simple hydrothermal and carbonization method. FeNi/LSC presents ideal EMW-absorbing performance by benefiting from the FeNi alloy nanosheet array, sponge-like structure, capability for impedance matching, and improved dielectric/magnetic losses. As expected, FeNi/LSC exhibited the minimum reflection loss of −58.3 dB at 1.5 mm with 20wt% filler content and a widely effective absorption bandwidth of 4.92 GHz. FeNi/LSC composites with effective EMW-absorbing performance provide new insights into the customization of biomass-derived composites as high-performance and lightweight broadband EMW-absorbing materials.

A rational design of FeNi alloy nanoparticles and carbonate-decorated perovskite as a highly active and coke-resistant anode for solid oxide fuel cells

Shuo Zhai,Heping Xie,Bin Chen,Meng Ni

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a kind of clean and efficient device to convert chemical energy in fuels into electricity. However, since anodes with high catalytic activity and carbon tolerance are still underdeveloped, the consequent serious performance degradation of the cells under operational conditions significantly confines their commercial applications. Here we propose a new strategy to remove carbon deposition by in-situ formation of alkali metal carbonate on the anode surface. A multi-phase composite anode, which is composed of an orthorhombic single perovskite main phase, a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) layered perovskite second phase, and an in-situ exsolved FeNi alloy minor phase, is developed by one-step reduction of La 0.65 Li 0.05 Sr 0.3 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (LLSFN 0.05 ) at a high temperature. The deficiencies of the RP phase and A-site caused by Li dopant would increase oxygen bulk diffusion, and FeNi nanoparticles would boost the catalytic activity. Moreover, when dealing with carbon fuel, lithium carbonate can be synthesized on the anode surface, serving as a good oxygen ion conductor and an efficient catalyst for coke removal by gasification. A single cell with our reduced LLSFN 0.05 anode exhibited maximum power densities of 596, 467, and 424 mW cm −2 at 750 ℃ with H 2 , CO, and wet C 2 H 6 as the fuel, respectively. In addition, the cells could have a long-term stable operation for over 80 h using CO as the fuel at 200 mA cm −2 . This study provides a new material design strategy to develop a highly active and coke-resistant anode.

Efficient electrocatalytic urea synthesis from CO2 and nitrate over the scale-up produced FeNi alloy-decorated nanoporous carbon

Zuo-Shu Sun,Xue-Yan Xiang,Qiu-Ping Zhao,Zhao Tang,Shi-Yi Jiang,Tong-Bu Lu,Zhi-Ming Zhang,Baifan Wang,Hua-Qing Yin

Electrocatalytic urea synthesis provides a favorable strategy for conventional energy-consuming urea synthesis, but achieving large-scale catalyst synthesis with high catalytic efficiency remains challenging. Herein, we developed a simple method for the preparation of a series of FeNi-alloy-based catalysts, named FeNi@ n C- T ( n represents the content of nanoporous carbon as 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 g and T = 900, 950, 1000 or 1100 °C), for highly performed urea synthesis via NO 3 − and CO 2 co-reduction. The FeNi@7C-1000 achieved a high urea yield of 1041.33 mmol h −1 g FeNi −1 with a Faradaic efficiency of 15.56% at –1.2 V vs . RHE. Moreover, the scale-up synthesized FeNi@7C-950-S (over 140 g per batch) was achieved with its high catalytic performance and high stability maintained. Mechanism investigation illuminated that the Ni and Fe sites catalyze and stabilize the key *CO and *N intermediates and minimize the C–N coupling reaction barriers for highly efficient urea synthesis.
