Iron phosphide/carbon (FeP/C) serving as electrocatalysts exhibit excellent activity in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. H 2 O 2 catalyzed by peroxidase (POD) is similar to the formation of new electron transfer channels and the optimization of adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates or desorption of products in ORR process. However, it is still a challenge to discover FeP/C with enhanced POD-like catalytic activity in the electrocatalytic database for biocatalysis. The discovery of FeP/carbon dots (FeP/CDs) nanozymes driven by electrocatalytic activity for enhanced POD-like ability is demonstrated. FeP/CDs derived from CDs-Fe 3+ chelates show enhanced POD-like catalytic and antibacterial activity. FeP/CDs exhibit enhanced POD-like activities with a specific activity of 31.1 U mg −1 that is double higher than that of FeP. The antibacterial ability of FeP/CDs nanozymes with enhanced POD-like activity is 98.1%. The antibacterial rate of FeP/CDs nanozymes (250 µg mL −1 ) increased by 5%, 15%, and 36% compared with FeP, Fe 2 O 3 /CDs, and Cu 3 P/CDs nanozymes, respectively. FeP/CDs nanozymes will attract more efforts to discover or screen transition metal phosphide/C nanozymes with enhanced POD-like catalytic activity for biocatalysis in the electrocatalytic database.

To solve the agglomeration of Fe and low electronic conductivity of FeP anode, a simple route through metal organic framework (MOF)-derived phosphorization has been successfully explored for in-situ encapsulation of FeP nanoparticles in porous carbon framework (FeP@C). The MOF-derived FeP@C anode can substantially inhibit the coarsening of small Fe, improve the electroconductivity and moderate the volume expansion of electrode, leading to superior rate capability and excellent cycling performance for Li-, Na- and K-ions storage. For example, the FeP@C anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 700 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 over 180 cycles for Li-ion batteries, displays a high reversible capacity of 387 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 over 100 cycles for Na-ion batteries and achieve a high reversible capacity of 163 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 over 100 cycles for K-ion batteries. The kinetic analysis , calculated diffusion coefficient and partial density of states (PDOS) results also confirmed this i n-situ carbon encapsulated strategy improves the conductivity of FeP particles facilitating the alkali-ion/electron's transportation.

Abstract Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting using BiVO 4 semiconductor photoanodes have been appealed to plenty of attentions in the past few decades. In this study, FeP was used as an active precious-metal-free cocatalyst for the first time to enhance the performance of worm-like nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanodes for PEC water splitting. Characterization results demonstrate that FeP nanoparticles were successfully deposited on surface of the pritine BiVO 4 photoanodes, and served as an noble metal-free cocatalyst for solar-driven PEC water splitting. Furthermore, a maximum photocurrent density of ~ 3.05 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs RHE could be achieved by loading moderate amount of FeP on the surface of BiVO 4 , which is about 1.6 times higher than that of the unmodified BiVO 4 . Meanwhile, the efficient suppression of surface recombination by FeP was also confirmed by the PEC measurements in Na 2 SO 3 solution. The maximum ABPE of FeP/BiVO 4 photoanodes was ~ 0.53% at 0.60 V vs RHE, indicating the potential application for overall solar-driven water splitting. Graphic Abstract

Development of non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of great significance under alkaline electrolytes for overall water splitting. In this work, CoP/FeP has been designed and constructed in situ on carbon fiber paper by using the bimetallic metal organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesis strategy. The heterogeneous CoP/FeP displays excellent catalytic activities in both HER and OER of the fully hydrolyzed semi-reaction. Remarkably, CoP/FeP is applied as the bifunctional electrode in anode and cathode to construct an overall water splitting apparatus, resulting in the low cell voltage and excellent stability. The exceptional electrocatalytic performance may be mainly attributed to the heterogeneous interface, which constructs a built-in electric field to provide electron to Co with electron-rich structure, resulting in the strong adsorption of H and weak adsorption of O 2 on Co. This study provides an effective and controllable method for the design of self-supporting bimetal phosphide catalysts.

Developing efficient, stable, and cost-effective electrocatalysts is essential for advancing sustainable water splitting and renewable energy technologies. Here, we report the design of a novel salt-flower-shaped FeP–CoP catalyst, leveraging its unique morphology and synergistic composition for enhanced bifunctional electrocatalysis. The catalyst showed outstanding performance in both hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER), achieving low overpotentials of 105 mV and 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for HER and OER, respectively, with Tafel slopes of 106.73 and 93.27 mV dec−1. The exceptional catalytic performance is attributed to the optimized phosphorization process, which enhances active site density, and the synergistic interaction between FeP and CoP, facilitating efficient charge transfer. This study highlights the potential of low-cost, earth-abundant metal-based catalysts for sustainable hydrogen and oxygen production, paving the way for scalable water-splitting technologies.

Thermal annealing is usually employed for performance enhancement of catalysts while the reason is still unclear. Herein, performance improvement of a promising Pd/FeP system via thermal annealing to provide enhanced active sites, as a proof of concept, was demonstrated for the formic acid oxidation reaction. Two kinds of active sites of Pd and Pd@FeP were indicated in Pd/FeP catalyst by the well-recognized CO stripping technique; the low active/unstable Pd sites could be transformed into more active Pd@FeP sites via thermal annealing and electrochemical reduction. The best catalytic activity of annealed Pd/FeP catalyst was 1.6 times of fresh Pd/FeP and 2.8 times of Pd/C catalysts. A maximum catalytic efficiency increased by 65 % was revealed owing to the Pd@FeP active sites formation; as high as 55 % of the initial current was maintained after the accelerated stability test for 1000 cycles. The result helps understand the thermal annealing effect on electro-catalyst performance improvement.

Radiation-induced graft polymerization is introduced to effectively fabricate proton exchange membrane based on 12.5 μm fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) film. The graft side chains penetrate FEP film and distribute inside the bulk matrix evenly. The membranes exhibit hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase-separated morphology as well as good thermal stability . The influences of irradiation parameters on the membrane property are investigated and the resulting membranes (named FEP-g-PSSA) exhibit excellent physicochemical properties . Membrane with 27.48% degree of graft and 130.1 mS cm −1 proton conductivity is employed for fuel cell performance measurement. Under optimized operate conditions (80 °C, 75% relative humidity), the power density could reach up to 0.896 W cm −2 , inspiring for fuel cell application . The mass-transport-controlled polarization of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) based on FEP-g-PSSA membrane is higher than Nafion® 211 within the whole current density range and the gap is widening with increasing current density. At 2.0 A cm −2 , the mass transfer polarization of FEP-g-PSSA reaches up to 0.204 V, far higher than Nafion® 211 (0.084 V). By promoting the compatibility between the ionomer in the catalyst layer and FEP-g-PSSA membrane and optimizing the membrane/catalyst layer/gas diffusion layer interfaces , the fuel cell performance could be significantly enhanced, making the FEP-g-PSSA membranes promising in fuel cell application.

Starting with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a facile process was demonstrated toward the synthesis of porous FeP nanocubes. Herein, Prussian blue nanocubes were used as iron-based MOFs precursors, and converted into FeP nanocubes through the thermal phosphidation reaction. Then, the FeP nanocubes were exploited as a peroxidase mimetic, which not only has the advantages of low cost, high stability, and easy preparation, but also follows Michaelis–Menten behaviors and shows strong affinity to substrates. On the basis of high catalytic activity of FeP nanocubes, a rapid, and convenient approach was developed for the colorimetric detection of H 2 O 2 from 2 μM to 130 μM and with a detection limit of 0.62 μM. The good catalytic activity and high stability make the porous FeP nanocubes a useful catalyst for a wide range of potential applications in catalysis and biotechnology.

We develop a method to prepare hollow FeP/Fe3O4 hybrid nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which could be used as highly active and efficient electrocatalysts. The Fe@Fe3O4/CNT hybrids were first synthesized by annealing the CNTs adsorbed with Fe(NO3)3, followed by controlled phosphorization treatment. They exhibit an outstanding catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a low overpotential of 229 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, a high turnover frequency value of 0.35 s–1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, and an ultralow Tafel slope of 27.6 mV dec–1, which is much better than that of FeP/Fe3O4, FeP/CNTs, Fe3O4/CNTs, and the commercial RuO2 electrocatalyst. More importantly, the Tafel slope is much lower than most non-noble metal-based OER electrocatalysts reported in the previous literature studies as far as we know. The excellent OER performance benefits from the electron transfer from Fe3O4 to FeP confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, together with good conductivity of CNTs. This hybrid structure supported on conductive CNTs may offer an efficient method to design earth-abundant and low-cost electrocatalysts for OER in practical applications.

Metal-air batteries require the exploration of affordable electrocatalysts with exceptional catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). One of the powerful ways to develop highly active and robust oxygen electrocatalysts is to load transition metal compounds onto a highly porous carbon aerogel . Here, we report a cell wall nanoengineering strategy to transform natural balsa wood into a wood-derived carbon aerogel (WCA), following by loading FeP nanoparticles inside the hierarchical N, P-doped WCA for ORR electrocatalysts. Wood nanotechnology is applied to manipulate the microstructure of the porous carbon aerogel with low-tortuosity, multichannel, and aligned pore, which benefits to the electron transportation for boosting the ORR. Under 0.1 M KOH conditions, the initial potential, half wave potential and limit current of FeP@N,P-WCA are 0.95 V, 0.84 V, and 5.20 mA cm −2 respectively, which are much higher than that of untreated wood and comparable to commercial Pt/C. The aqueous Zn-air batteries assembled with this catalyst exhibit a remarkable specific capacity of 775.5 mA h g −1 and better charge-discharge cycling stability. The excellent electrocatalytic activity demonstrated by FeP@N,P-WCA for ORR is attributed to the inherent tri-pathway (lumen, pit, and ray cell) porous structure of wood, the high conductivity and specific surface area of WCA (584.2 m 2 g −1 ), and the highly dispersed FeP nanoparticles . This work provides a structural design concept for achieving high electrocatalytic biobased WCA reactors by combining wood nanotechnology and electrocatalysts chemistry for energy storage and conversion .

Owing to its high electrochemical ability, the FeP is envisioned to be the potential electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI) with enhanced performance. However, it suffers from poor cycling stability due to the active redox reaction. In this work, a facile approach has been designed to prepare the mesoporous shuttle-like FeP using MIL-88 as the template. The porous shuttle-like structure not only alleviates the volume expansion of FeP during the desalination/salination process but also promotes ion diffusion dynamics by providing convenient ion diffusion channels. As a result, the FeP electrode has demonstrated a high desalting capacity of 79.09 mg g−1 at 1.2 V. Further, it proves the superior capacitance retention, which maintained 84% of the initial capacity after the cycling. Based on post-characterization, a possible electrosorption mechanism of FeP has been proposed.

Graphical A CoP−FeP heterostructure catalyst with abundant P vacancies (Vp−CoP−FeP/NF) on nickel foam is constructed through impregnation and phosphorization. It demonstrates excellent hydrogen evolution performance and has practical application prospects in high-current overall water splitting. The catalyst‘s unique hierarchical nanosheet structure, plentiful P vacancies and synergistic effect of CoP and FeP accelerate HER kinetics, resulting in its superior performance. The development of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high performance under large current density is still a challenge. Introducing P vacancies in heterostructure is an appealing strategy to enhance HER kinetics. This study investigates a CoP−FeP heterostructure catalyst with abundant P vacancies (Vp−CoP−FeP/NF) on nickel foam (NF), which was prepared using dipping and phosphating treatment. The optimized Vp−CoP−FeP catalyst exerted prominent HER catalytic capability, requiring an ultra-low overpotential (58 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 ) and displaying robust durability (50 h @ 200 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated superior overall water splitting activity as cathode, demanding only cell voltage of 1.76 V at 200 mA cm −2 , outperforming Pt/C/NF (−) || RuO 2 /NF (+) . The catalyst‘s outstanding performance can be attributed to the hierarchical structure of porous nanosheets, abundant P vacancies, and synergistic effect between CoP and FeP components, which promote water dissociation and H* adsorption and desorption, thereby synergically accelerating HER kinetics and enhancing HER activity. This study demonstrates the potential of HER catalysts with phosphorus-rich vacancies that can work under industrial-scale current density, highlighting the importance of developing durable and efficient catalysts for hydrogen production.
