Adsorption and Reduction of Aqueous Cr by FeS-Modified Fe-Al Layered Double Hydroxide

Shuangshuang Zhang,Wenhui Zhang,Yazhen Wan

To remedy the widespread chromium (Cr) pollution in the environment, this study mainly used the ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation and precipitation methods to prepare FeS-modified Fe-Al-layered double hydroxide (FeS/LDH) composite material. The experimental results showed that FeS/LDH has higher removal efficiency of Cr in aqueous solution and stronger anti-interference ability than unmodified LDH. Under the same reaction conditions, the removal efficiency of total Cr(Cr(T)) using LDH was 34.85%, and the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 46.76%. For FeS/LDH, the removal efficiency of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) reached 99.57% and 100%, respectively. The restoration of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) by FeS/LDH satisfied the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) achieved 102.9 mg/g and 147.7 mg/g. The efficient removal of Cr by FeS/LDH was mainly based on the triple synergistic effect of anion exchange between Cr(VI) and interlayer anions, redox of Cr(VI) with Fe2+and S2−, and co-precipitation of Fe3+and Cr3+.Keywords:chromium;FeS/LDH;double reduction;anti-interference;co-precipitation

Qiang Zhang,Xiayin Yao,Jean Pierre Mwizerwa,Ning Huang,Hongli Wan,Zhen Huang,Xiaoxiong Xu

Transition metal sulfides have attracted particular interests owing to their extremely higher specific capacity and more compatible with sulfide electrolyte than lithium transition-metal oxide for all-solid-state lithium batteries. FeS nanosheets with thickness of 10   nm are synthesized by a poly (vinyl alcohol)-assisted precipitation method and further successfully employed in Li/70%Li 2 S-29%P 2 S 5 –1%P 2 O 5 /Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 /FeS all-solid-state lithium batteries. The obtained all-solid-state lithium batteries show reversible discharge capacity of 550   mAh   g −   1 after 50   cycles at current density of 0.1   A   g −   1 and exhibit superior rate performances.

Synthesis of Ultrathin FeS Nanosheets via Chemical Vapor Deposition

Lu Lv,Weikang Dong,Dian Li,Qingrong Liang,Ping Wang,Chunyu Zhao,Zhaokai Luo,Chengyu Zhang,Xiangwei Huang,Shoujun Zheng,Yuanyuan Cui,Jiadong Zhou,Yanfeng Gao

Fe-based 2D materials exhibit rich chemical compositions and structures, which may imply many unique physical properties and promising applications. However, achieving controllable preparation of ultrathin non-layered FeS crystal on SiO 2 /Si substrate remains a challenge. Herein, the influence of temperature and molecular sieves is reported on the synthesis of ultrathin FeS nanosheets with a thickness as low as 2.3 nm by molecular sieves-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The grown FeS nanosheets exhibit a non-layered hexagonal NiAs structure and belong to the P6 3 /mmc space group. The inverted symmetry broken structure is confirmed by the angle-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) test. In particular, the 2D FeS nanosheets exhibit exceptional metallic behavior, with conductivity up to 1.63 × 10 6 S m −1 at 300 K for an 8 nm thick sample, which is higher than that of reported 2D metallic materials. This work provides a significant contribution to the synthesis and characterization of 2D non-layered Fe-based materials.

Trichloroethene degradation by nanoscale CaO2 activated with Fe(II)/FeS: The role of FeS and the synergistic activation mechanism of Fe(II)/FeS

Yong Sun,Muhammad Danish,Meesam Ali,Ali Shan,Ming Li,Yanchen Lyu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui,Xueke Zang,Shuguang Lyu

The performance of trichloroethene (TCE) degradation was significantly improved with the addition of FeS in nanoscale calcium peroxide (nCP) environment and the enhancement of HO generation in nCP/Fe(II)/FeS system was confirmed by comparison with nCP/Fe(II) and nCP/FeS systems. The role of FeS in nCP/Fe(II)/FeS system demonstrated that the majority of reactive oxygen radicals (ROSs) was generated on the catalyst surface due to the heterogeneous reaction through FeS activated nCP in one hand, and the reductive FeS could promote TCE degradation by regenerating Fe(II) from Fe(III) in the other hand. The probe as well as scavenger test results suggested that the major ROSs was HO rather than O 2 − . Over 91.5% TCE could be degraded at the molar ratio of 2/2/4/1 of nCP/Fe(II)/FeS/TCE, in which more than 95.5% TCE was dechlorinated. The effect of surfactants on TCE degradation was evaluated. In contrast, further investigation found that BTEX removal was inhibited with the addition of FeS. In conclusion, this study revealed the well function and fundamental synergistic mechanism of FeS. Moreover, the degradation of TCE in actual groundwater confirmed that nCP/Fe(II)/FeS technique has a great advantage and potential in TCE contaminated groundwater remediation in ISCO practice.

Enhanced degradation of tetracycline by Cu(II) complexation in the FeS/sulfite system

Ying Cai,Shihao Shen,Jinhong Fan

This study applied a mineral material of FeS to activate sulfite for efficient degradation of TTC in the presence of Cu(II) based on the identified complexation mechanism through UV–Vis spectra, FTIR spectroscopy and DFT calculation . pH plays an important role in TTC degradation and the initial pH of 6 and 7 were the divide in the contributions of FeS/sulfite oxidation and complex-precipitation. TTC-Cu(II) exhibits a superior promoting effect on the TTC degradation in FeS/sulfite system due to the improvement of TTC electron transfer reactivity and Fe(II) dissolution from FeS. Moreover, the formation of Cu(I) improved the recycling of Fe(II) from Fe(III). Dissolved oxygen-dependent free radicals’ generation was confirmed, and TTC degradation was mainly attributed to SO 4 ·− and ·OH. The characterization of FeS surface through XPS, XRD , SEM-EDS, Fe(II) deactivation tests, together with the comparison of pseudo-first-order rate constants for TTC degradation by FeS and ferrous ion supported the important role of surface and dissolved Fe(II) in sulfite activation . Furthermore, reasonable degradation pathways of TTC have been proposed according to the detected products by LC-MS. This work highlights the important role of pH, DO and Cu(II) complexation in sulfite activation and TTC degradation, furnishing theoretical support for further relevant studies.

Simultaneous oxidation of roxarsone and adsorption of released arsenic by FeS-activated sulfite

Sheng Gong,Jingnan Yang,Qinyi Pan,Xuran Liu,Quan Zhang,Dongbo Wang

The conventional oxidation-adsorption methods are effective for the removal of roxarsone (ROX) but are limited by complicated operation, toxic residual oxidant and leaching of toxic metal ions. Herein, we proposed a new approach to improve ROX removal, i.e., using the FeS/sulfite system. Experimental results showed that approximately 100% of ROX (20 mg/L) was removed and more than 90% of the released inorganic arsenic (As(V) dominated) was adsorbed on FeS within 40 min. This FeS/sulfite system was a non-homogeneous activation process, and SO 4 ·− , ·OH and 1 O 2 were identified as reactive oxidizing species with their contributions to ROX degradation being 48.36%, 27.97% and 2.64%, respectively. Based on density functional theory calculations and HPLC-MS results, the degradation of ROX was achieved by C-As breaking, electrophilic addition, hydroxylation and denitrification. It was also found that the released inorganic arsenic was adsorbed through a combination of outer-sphere complexation and surface co-precipitation, and the generated arsenopyrite (FeAsS), a precursor to ecologically secure scorodite (FeAsO 4 ·2H 2 O), was served as the foundation for further inorganic arsenic mineralization. This is the first attempt to use the FeS/sulfite system for organic heavy metal removal, which proposes a prospective technique for the removal of ROX.

Adsorption of mercury (II) from aqueous solutions using FeS and pyrite: A comparative study

Yue Sun,Dan Lv,Jiasheng Zhou,Xiaoxin Zhou,Zimo Lou,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

In this study, a comparative evaluation of synthetic FeS and natural pyrite was performed to investigate their adsorptive potentials toward Hg(II) in aqueous system. Characterization analyses such as BET, SEM and TEM suggested that FeS had porous structures with abundant active sites, while pyrite with a hard and smooth surface relied mainly on surface adsorption to immobilize Hg(II). Results of batch tests revealed that FeS offered much greater Hg(II) maximum adsorption capacity (769.2 mg/g) as compared to pyrite (9.9 mg/g). Both iron sulfides showed high removal efficiency (>96%) with the initial Hg(II) concentration (1 mg/L) at pH = 7.0 ± 0.1, and the effluent could meet the permissible effluent concentration (<50 μg/L). Condition experiments (such as pH, co-ions) proved that the adaptive capacity of FeS was significantly higher than that of pyrite. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model was better able to illustrate the sorption kinetics on both FeS and pyrite (R 2  ≥ 0.9992). XRD and XPS analyses supported that precipitation, ion exchange and surface complexation were main reaction mechanisms involved in the adsorption process. In addition, it was also revealed that the structural changes of FeS before and after adsorption was much larger than pyrite. Findings from this study suggest FeS is a promising candidate for treatment of high-concentration Hg(II)-containing wastewater (<20 mg/L), while pyrite can be applied as a long-term adsorbing material in the immobilization of wastewater containing low Hg(II) concentration (<1 mg/L) due to its cost-effective property and local availability.

Yolk-shell Fe/FeS@SiO2 particles with enhanced dispersibility, transportability and degradation of TBBPA

Luyao Ren,Liangzhong Li,Shuai Chen,Hui Li,Yongdi Liu,Liyang Zhou,Su Guo,YunJiang Yu

In this study, Fe/FeS@SiO 2 yolk-shell particles (Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs) were synthesized, characterized, and applied to tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) removal in simulated groundwater. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer Emmett Teller results revealed that Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs possess special structures, including active cores, mesoporous networks, shells, hollow cavities and a large surface area (85 m 2 /g vs. 8 m 2 /g) compared to Fe/FeS. The mobility of the synthesized particles in porous media was simulated with sand column experiments. Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs showed a much better transportability (83.02% of particles successfully transported through the column) than Fe/FeS particles (only 1.68%), related to the better suspension stability and much lower particle surface charge (−22.7 mV vs. −7.6 mV) at neutral pH. Improved TBBPA reduction performance in synthetic solution was observed for Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs over bare Fe/FeS. The transformation pathway of TBBPA was studied in detail, revealing the formation of tri-BBPA, di-BBPA, mono-BBPA and BPA as the main products. In brief, thanks to the hollow mesoporous silica spheres (HMSS) coated on the surface of Fe/FeS particles, Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs showed an enhanced dispersibility, transportability and degradation of TBBPA in simulated groundwater. The results in this study proved that Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs are a promising material for in situ remediation of TBBPA in soil and groundwater.

Boosting the covalency of FeS via a built-in electric field in FeS/MnS heterojunctions for durable oxygen electrocatalysis in zinc-air batteries

Kexin Wei,Fan Yang,Yang Sun,Chunhui Yu,Junpu An,Kaiyi Chen,Shijia Li,Jiabao Guo,Yongfeng Li

The development of efficient and low-cost non-precious metal bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts remains a critical challenge for advancing zinc-air batteries. In this study, we designed and synthesized three-dimensional carbon nanofiber catalysts integrated with sulfur- and nitrogen-doped carbon anchoring FeS/MnS heterostructures, leveraging an interfacial engineering approach. Originating from this strategy, the optimized FeS/MnS@CNFs shows a higher half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.88 V for ORR and a lower overpotential (E j=10 ) of 230 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for OER. The theoretical studies elucidate that the significant work function difference (0.43 eV) between FeS and MnS induces a built-in electric field at their heterointerface. This field drives electron transfer from MnS to FeS, which consequently strengthens the covalency of Fe S bonds and significantly enhances the adsorption capability for the *OOH intermediate species. When employed as the air-cathode catalyst, the FeS/MnS@CNFs-based zinc-air battery achieved a remarkable peak power density of 223 mW cm −2 and maintained stable operation for over 280 h at 10 mA cm −2 . Further theoretical modeling of the heterostructure elucidated that the built-in electric field modulates Fe S bond energies through electronic rearrangement, providing a fundamental explanation for the enhanced oxygen electrocatalytic performance and improved structural stability.

Highly efficient removal of aqueous Hg(II) by FeS micro-flakes

Mingling Xiao,Xiaofang Lai,Jun He,Jiahao Huang,Zhenhua Tang,Ruiwen Wu,Jikang Jian

FeS (mackinawite) is known to be effective in the sorption of aqueous Hg(II). However, FeS nanoparticles are apt to aggregate and easy to be oxidized, which limits their wide applications. Here, we have synthesized FeS micro-flakes which can be uniformly dispersed in water without aggregation. Owing to the good stability and dispersibility, FeS micro-flakes exhibit high efficiency in the removal of Hg(II) from water. The sorption of Hg(II) on the FeS micro-flakes is more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, indicating that the sorption of Hg(II) is mainly monolayer sorption dominated by chemical sorption. The maximum sorption capacity is 2680 mg/g at pH 5.6 and 30 °C, significantly higher than those of FeS nanoparticles and other Hg(II) scavengers. The pH studies indicate that FeS (0.31 g/L) can effectively remove >97.6 % of 200 mg/L Hg(II) in the pH range of 2–12 at 30 °C. Powder X-ray diffraction, elemental and sorption analyses suggest that Hg(II) is removed via chemical precipitation and surface adsorption. This study demonstrates the potential and viability of FeS micro-flakes for efficient removal of aqueous Hg(II).

Degradation of the β-blocker propranolol by sulfite activation using FeS

Yiqun Chen,Yang Tong,Yingwen Xue,Zizheng Liu,Min Tang,Li-Zhi Huang,Senlin Shao,Zheng Fang

A new advanced oxidation process, FeS-activated sulfite system, was firstly established to degrade β-blockers in water at near neutral pH. By choosing propranolol (PRO) as a model compound, the experimental conditions including FeS and sulfite doses, initial pH, dissolved oxygen, and co-existed components were investigated. Up to 95% of PRO was eliminated after 20 min reaction with FeS and sulfite doses being 20 mg/L and 1 mM, respectively, at initial pH 6.0. The PRO removal was pH-dependent with an optimal pH of 6.0, and the dissolved oxygen was essential. The presence of Cl − , HCO 3 − and humic acid could inhibit the FeS/sulfite process to different degrees. Radical scavenging experiment and electron spin resonance technology indicate that SO 4 − played a predominant role in PRO removal. The possible degradation pathway was subsequently inferred in terms of the detected products. The leached iron from FeS actually induced the activation of sulfite, rather than the structural Fe(II/III). Five other organic contaminants including metoprolol, fluoxetine, estriol, aniline, and p-chlorobenzoic acid could also be effectively degraded. In contrast with persulfate and peroxymonosulfate, the introducing of sulfite to FeS achieved much higher removal performance of PRO. Our study suggests a novel promising process of FeS/sulfite for water treatment.

Multicomponent synergistic flower-like FeS/hollow C fiber for tunable and efficient microwave absorption

Xiaolin Lan,Ran Wang,Wenbo Liu,Zhanhua Huang,Pengyang Deng,Zhijiang Wang

Selecting suitable components and microstructure are effective way to design intense coupling of wave impedance and electromagnetic dissipation capacity in the field of electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption materials. Herein, we propose the construction of a novel composite composed of carbon fibers derived from biomass serve as a skeleton to support the loaded with flower-like FeS (FeS/hollow C). The unique microstructure creates the generation of abundant heterogeneous interfaces, impedance matching and multiple loss mechanism, allowing for synergistic effect of dielectric loss and magnetic loss, thereby promoting their EM absorbing properties. The FeS/hollow C absorber exhibited excellent EM wave absorption performance, with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.20 GHz, and a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −65 dB with the thickness of 2.2 mm. The study provides a new strategy for constructing composite absorbers with ingenious structures, which is significant for the preparation, development, and functional application of biomass-based materials.
