Enhanced high-frequency properties of FeSiCr soft magnetic composites with La-doped YIG as insulating layer

Zhihui Xu,Jing Li,Xiaoling Peng,Shan Tao,Jingcai Xu,Bo Hong,Xinqing Wang

In this study, nano-sized La-doped YIG (Y 3-x La x Fe 5 O 12 , x = 0.00, 0.03, 0.05, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.15) were prepared using a reverse co-precipitation method, which were then combined with FeSiCr powder to create a novel FeSiCr/Y 3-x La x Fe 5 O 12 soft magnetic composite (SMC). X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the successful incorporation of La into the YIG lattice. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) scans demonstrated that a uniform insulating layer of La-doped YIG was effectively coated on the FeSiCr particles. The results revealed that the Y 2.92 La 0.08 Fe 5 O 12 powders showed the highest M s of 22.334 emu/g. Furthermore, the FeSiCr/Y 3-x La x Fe 5 O 12 SMCs exhibited notable improvements both in permeability and core loss with a La doping concentration of x = 0.08 ( P cv  = 122.35 mW/cm 3 , μ e  = 51.034 at 10 mT and 500 kHz), accompanied by an enhancement of DC bias characteristics. This work optimized the magnetic properties of YIG with La doping and constructed a novel FeSiCr/La-doped YIG SMCs with enhanced high-frequency performance.

Regulation of magnetic and electrical performances in core-shell-structured FeSiCr@BaTiO3 soft magnetic composites

Rongdi Guo,Guoliang Yu,Mingmin Zhu,Yang Qiu,Guohua Wu,Haomiao Zhou

Soft magnetic composites (SMCs) are extensively used for designing and manufacturing high-performance electronic devices, such as inductors, filters, mutual inductors and chokes, owing to their high effective permeability ( μ e ) and stable magnetic properties . However, the production of SMCs that meet the demands of high resistivity, high effective permeability ( μ e ), and low core losses ( P cv ), which are required for high-frequency miniaturized electronic systems, is challenging. In this study, we improve the electromagnetic performance of SMCs by coating FeSiCr metal particles with BaTiO 3 dielectric ceramic powder at various concentrations (0.00–3.75 wt%). The micro-morphological, static magnetic, resistivity ( ρ ), and core loss ( P cv ) properties of FeSiCr@BaTiO 3 SMCs are comprehensively investigated. Energy dispersive spectroscopy elemental distribution mapping is used to confirm the formation of core-shell structures with excellent coating quality. With an increase in the BaTiO 3 dielectric powder content, the core losses, P cv (at 800 kHz, 10 mT and 25 °C), initially decrease and subsequently increase, and comprise hysteresis losses ( P h ) and eddy current losses ( P e ). Moreover, owing to the introduction of the non-magnetic-phase BaTiO 3 powder, hysteresis losses increase monotonically, whereas eddy current losses exhibit the opposite trend. The FeSiCr@BaTiO 3 SMCs with 2.25 wt% BaTiO 3 dielectric ceramic powder exhibit outstanding comprehensive electromagnetic properties with an effective permeability of μ e = 48, saturated magnetization of M s = 115 emu/g, core losses of P cv = 42 mW/cm 3 (at 800 kHz, 10 mT and 25 °C), and resistivity of ρ  = 2.74 × 10 5 Ω∙m. These state-of-the-art FeSiCr@BaTiO 3 SMCs present considerable potential for application in high-performance power devices and components.

Design and Fabrication of FeSiCr@BN Soft Magnetic Composites with Improved Thermal Management and Core Loss Performance

Rui Wang,Kaixuan Li,Yang Liu,Zhaoyang Wu,Xingyi Wu,Shaogang Li,Li Liu

The optimization of FeSiCr soft magnetic composites remains a critical research area in the development of integrated molded inductors. Constructing dense insulation layers and achieving the ordered alignment of flaky magnetic powders are effective strategies to enhance their overall performance. Inspired by the structural design of fried chicken steak, this study synthesizes FeSiCr@boron nitride (BN) soft magnetic composites. By modifying with two-dimensional BN and employing magnetic field–assisted directional molding, the composites achieve orderly particle alignment and efficient insulation coating. Experimental results indicate that the thiol-modified BN (BN-s) insulation layer chemically bonded to the FeSiCr matrix, combined with the ordered alignment of flaky particles induced by magnetic orientation, substantially improves core loss performance and thermal management. The FeSiCr@BN soft magnetic composites with the optimal BN-s content of 4   wt% show a core loss of 398.5   kW/m 3 (30 mT/300   kHz), a thermal conductivity of 30.01   W·m −1 ·K −1 , a reduced operating temperature rise of 119°C, and an impressive resistivity increase from 0.08 to 10.17 Ω·m. This work presents a design strategy for soft magnetic composites, highlighting the promising applications of the prepared composites in electronic devices, power electronic systems, and smart grids.

FeSiCr soft magnetic composites with significant improvement of high-frequency magnetic properties by compositing nano-YIG ferrite insulating layer

Wanjiao Li,Jing Li,Hui Li,Feng Hu,Jingcai Xu,Bo Hong,Yunxiong Zeng,Xinqing Wang,Hongliang Ge,Xiaoling Peng

FeSiCr soft magnetic composites (SMCs) with yttrium iron garnet (YIG) coating layer were studied in this work. The YIG with nano size was synthesized by reverse co-precipitation method, which was coated on FeSiCr powders with different YIG contents. The effect of the annealing temperature on the FeSiCr/YIG SMCs was also investigated. It was found that a moderate amount of YIG ferrite could form a thin and uniform layer, resulting in significant optimizations in core loss, permeability, and DC bias characteristics. The results show that the FeSiCr/YIG SMCs with 0.75 wt% YIG exhibit the best magnetic performance ( P cv  = 131.34 mW/cm 3 , μ e  = 44.5 at 10 mT and 500 kHz). In addition, it was demonstrated that the FeSiCr/YIG SMCs with 0.75 wt% YIG presented the lowest core loss and largest permeability at the optimal annealing temperature of 500 °C. This study provides a new kind of FeSiCr/YIG SMCs which have good prospects to be used in high-frequency fields.

Method for preparing a self-stratifying epoxy/acrylic resin coating with micron-sized FeSiCr

Zhang Linbo,Hong Mu-Nai Jin,Yang Ruoyu,Jiang Xianyu,Zhou Yusheng,Zhang Tongqing,Yuan Le

This study develops and explores a self-stratifying coating system that incorporates both epoxy and acrylic resins. It examines the impact of film thickness and substrate type on self-stratification behavior, confirms predictions from the surface energy model, and identifies the surface tension gradient as the primary driving mechanism for stratification. Additionally, this research investigates the influence of FeSiCr powder on the stratification behavior of the coating. Results demonstrate that the self-stratifying coating, composed of a blend of epoxy and acrylic resins with FeSiCr powder, exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to coatings formulated solely from a mixture of epoxy resin and FeSiCr powder. SEM-EDS analysis reveals that the enhanced corrosion resistance can be attributed to the accumulation of epoxy resin and FeSiCr at the bottom of the coating, while the acrylic resin forms an effective protective layer on the surface. Furthermore, the study examines the effects of FeSiCr powder content, solvent addition, and volatilization rate on the stratified structure and appearance of the coating. The findings indicate that at relatively low FeSiCr powder content, the layered structure of the coating remains largely intact, with the powder predominantly residing within the epoxy resin layer. However, increasing the powder content compromises the self-stratification structure, leading to a rougher coating surface. It is also observed that augmenting the quantity of the xylene/butyl acetate mixture reduces pit formation on the surface, while the use of MIBK solvent results in incomplete stratification and exacerbates surface roughness.

Corrosion behavior and microwave absorption properties of FeSiCr magnetic alloys in acidic saline environments

Xianyu Jiang,Yuchi Dong,Kai Zheng,Ruoyu Yang,Xiang Zhang,Linbo Zhang

Magnetic alloy powders combining corrosion resistance and microwave absorption capability are highly desirable for harsh-environment applications; however, the coupling between corrosion evolution and electromagnetic performance remains poorly understood. Herein, the corrosion behavior, microstructural evolution, and microwave absorption performance of FeSiCr powders were systematically investigated during a 30-day exposure in an acidic saline (5 wt% NaCl, pH = 3). The results reveal a three-stage corrosion process driven by selective oxidation. In Stage 1, preferential oxidation of Cr and Si forms a protective oxide layer that suppresses Fe corrosion and improves impedance matching, enabling D12-FeSiCr to achieve an optimal RL min of −51.75 dB and a maximum RCS reduction of 28.1 dB m 2 , outperforming the pristine D0-FeSiCr sample (−48.82 dB). In Stage 2, depletion of surface Cr and Si accelerates Fe oxidation and corrosion kinetics, while the porous iron oxides weaken magnetic properties but introduce additional dielectric polarization loss, leading to only slight deterioration in microwave absorption performance. In Stage 3, a stable corrosion layer slows further corrosion; however, reduced magnetic loss and degraded impedance matching ultimately results in inferior absorption performance. This work reveals the intrinsic coupling between corrosion behavior and electromagnetic properties, providing fundamental insights for environmentally robust microwave absorber design.

Fabrication of high-performance FeSiCr-based soft magnetic composites using thermal decomposition of salt compounds

Huaqin Huang,Rui Wang,Kaixuan Li,Bing Dai,Zhaoyang Wu,Peisheng Lyu

Optimising solid-phase reactions at the interface between an iron-based soft magnetic powder matrix and an inorganic oxide ceramic insulating layer in soft magnetic composites is an effective method to overcome the inverse relationship between magnetic conductivity and energy losses in these materials. However, solid-phase reactions at the interface are currently based on using highly reactive aluminium within iron-based soft magnetic powders. Herein, an interface reaction between ZnSO 4 and FeSiCr was successfully conducted to afford formation of FeSiCr-based soft magnetic composites, which are characterised by a three-layer structure comprising FeSiCr, a Si and Cr-rich layer and a ZnO·SiO 2 ·Cr 2 O 3 composite insulating layer. Thermal decomposition of ZnSO 4 releases O 2 , which induces the migration of Cr and Si atoms from the FeSi 3.7 Cr 4.5 soft magnetic powder matrix towards the interface and their subsequent reaction; this increases the magnetic phase content and enhances the crystalline structure order of the powder matrix. Furthermore, the ZnO·SiO 2 ·Cr 2 O 3 composite insulating layer effectively insulated the FeSiCr soft magnetic powder matrix. The resulting FeSiCr-based soft magnetic composite materials with the ZnO·SiO 2 ·Cr 2 O 3 composite insulating layer exhibit low core losses (58.5 kW/m 3 ), high magnetic permeability (39.1) and high saturation magnetisation (166.5 emu/g), indicating they are an ideal choice for high-performance electromagnetic components. The proposed innovative strategy of oxygen release through the thermal decomposition of salt compounds affords an insulating coating on soft magnetic composite materials fabricated based on interfacial solid-phase reactions.

Effect of Annealing Atmosphere on the Microstructure and High-Frequency Magnetic Properties of FeSiCr Soft Magnetic Composites

Chijiawen Fang,Jie Zhang,Jianwei Zheng,Dongsheng Shi,Wenjin Wu,Jingwu Zheng,Liang Qiao,Wei Cai,Yao Ying,Juan Li,Jing Yu,Akihisa Inoue,Shenglei Che

Annealing is a critical step in the fabrication of soft magnetic composites (SMCs), and precise coordination of annealing atmosphere and temperature is essential for optimizing their performance. In this study, FeSiCr SMCs were annealed under three different atmospheres (air, nitrogen, and argon) across a range of temperatures, and the effects of the annealing atmosphere on their microstructure and soft magnetic properties were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that annealing in an inert atmosphere, particularly argon, within the temperature range of 450–750 °C, yields superior magnetic properties compared with air annealing. After annealing under argon at 550 °C, the effective magnetic permeability (μe) reached 47.5, and the power loss (Pcv) was 1457.3 kW/m3at 1000 kHz and 30 mT. These improvements are primarily attributed to effective stress relaxation and the substantial retention of the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) insulating layer. With further increases in annealing temperature, the magnetic properties deteriorate rapidly due to the complete decomposition of PVB and the formation of conductive chromium carbides. Under such conditions, air annealing exhibits distinct advantages. Selective oxidation of FeSiCr occurs, leading to the formation of a dense chromium oxide insulating layer that enhances magnetic performance (after annealing at 850 °C,μe= 47.9,Pcv= 1632.0 kW/m3). Moreover, the mechanical properties were significantly improved, with the radial crush strength increasing from 22.36 N in the unannealed state to 330 N after annealing. These results indicate that the comprehensive performance of SMCs can be effectively tailored through the appropriate selection of annealing atmosphere and temperature, providing valuable guidance for the design and optimization of high-performance SMCs.

Green chemistry approach enables ultra-broad microwave absorption and high corrosion resistance in traditional FeSiCr electromagnetic wave absorbers

Chaowen Deng,Qiubei Ye,Yang Xu,Benqiang Wang,Fei Zhang,Huying Yan,Tong Li,Tingdong Zhou

Facing increasingly severe electromagnetic pollution and equipment corrosion issues, the development of absorptive materials that combine highly efficient broadband microwave absorption with good environmental stability is of growing importance. Traditional FeSiCr alloys, despite their favorable magnetic loss characteristics, suffer from inherent drawbacks, including impedance mismatch, a narrow effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ), and susceptibility to corrosion, which significantly limit their practical applications. In this study, a new carbonitriding process based on a green chemical method was adopted. Melamine (C 3 H 6 N 6 ) was used as a carbon and nitrogen source, and carbonitriding FeSiCr was prepared by the solid solution of C and N on the basis of traditional alloying FeSiCr. The incorporation of C and N effectively optimizes the dielectric properties of FeSiCr, improves impedance matching, and introduces multiple loss mechanisms, thereby enhancing the electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) performance, particularly in terms of bandwidth. As a result, carbonitrided FeSiCr exhibits pronounced reflection loss and absorption capability. The FeSiCr sample treated with 0.2 mol C 3 H 6 N 6 achieves a minimum reflection loss of −54.14 dB at a thickness of 1.5 mm, along with an EAB of 8.01 GHz at 1.7 mm, covering nearly the entire X and Ku bands. Radar cross section (RCS) simulations further confirm the effective microwave absorption performance of carbonitrided FeSiCr. Moreover, carbonitrided FeSiCr shows markedly improved corrosion resistance. When the C 3 H 6 N 6 dosage is 0.2 mol, the corrosion potential reaches 1.17 V, while the corrosion current density decreases to 8.62 × 10 −11 A/cm 2 , indicating good stability in corrosive environments. This study highlights the promising application potential of carbonitriding for microwave absorption.

Metasurface-regulated X-band absorption of atmospheric plasma-sprayed FeSiCr/CaO-B2O3-SiO2 composite coatings for high-temperature radar stealth

Xin Wang,Yao Luo,Chen Zhang,Xin Li,Qi Li,Jianliang Xie

To meet the need for ultrathin high-temperature radar-stealth coatings with effective X-band absorption, a metasurface-regulated FeSiCr/CaO-B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (FSC/CBS) composite coating was designed. FSC/CBS coatings with different FSC contents were fabricated by atmospheric plasma spraying to examine the effects of absorber loading on particle state, microstructure, electromagnetic parameters, and high-temperature absorption. Increasing FSC content raised the in-flight particle temperature and promoted FSC spreading and flattening, causing the absorbing phase to evolve from isolated particles to lamellar structures and locally connected conductive networks. These structural features enhanced interfacial polarization and conduction loss, whereas excessive FSC aggregation suppressed the effective magnetic response through demagnetization and skin-effect shielding, degrading impedance matching. The 1-mm-thick 40FSC/CBS coating showed stable Ku-band absorption at 600 °C, with reflection loss below −5 dB over 11.7-18.0 GHz. After metasurface loading, its effective absorption band was regulated to 8.0-13.78 GHz, covering the entire X band, and the cavity radar cross section was reduced by 12.17 dBsm.

Selective oxidation of rare metal oxide insulation layers on particle substrates for optimizing the performance of FeSiCr-based soft magnetic composites

Huaqin Huang,Jian Wang,Zhenghao Cui,Zihan Gao,Zhenyi Huang,Zhaoyang Wu

This study introduces an approach to fabricating soft magnetic composites (SMCs) that effectively address core loss while maintaining high magnetic conductivity. During the sintering process in a water vapor environment, the CeO 2 insulation layer facilitates the selective oxidation of Si while simultaneously impeding the outward diffusion of Fe and Cr. Consequently, a CeO 2 ·SiO 2 composite insulation layer forms within the FeSiCr-based SMCs. The FeSiCr-based SMCs with the CeO 2 ·SiO 2 composite insulation layer achieve a saturation magnetization of 153.1 emu/g, which is 10.9% lower than that of FeSi 3.7 Cr 4.5 compacts, and exhibits a deterioration rate lower than previously reported values. Moreover, the permeability of the FeSiCr-based SMCs remains highly stable, demonstrating outstanding insulation characteristics. The total core loss and core loss separation results further corroborate that incorporating a CeO 2 ·SiO 2 composite insulation layer leads to a more pronounced reduction in interparticle eddy current loss than using a CeO 2 insulating layer alone. This performance enhancement can be attributed to the selective oxidation of a rare metal oxide insulation layer on a ferromagnetic metal particle substrate, a technique applied to SMCs for the first time. These findings hold significant implications for the design of high-performance SMCs in miniaturized and lightweight electromagnetic devices.

Mechanism of the Synergistic Control Strategy of Interfacial Reaction and Particle Size on the Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of FeSiCr Soft Magnetic Powder Cores

Jia Jixiang,Wang Haiwei,Yang Guang,Lu Zhihao,Wang Rui,Wu Zhaoyang

Preparing insulating layers via interfacial solid-phase reactions is regarded as one of the most effective strategies for enhancing the magnetic performance of soft magnetic powder cores (SMPCs). However, mismatches in lattice structures between the insulating layer and the magnetic powder can cause cracking in the insulating layer, thereby compromising the stability and performance of SMPCs under operational conditions. This study presents a refined method for preparing insulating layers based on solid-phase reactions, utilizing the thermal decomposition of salt compounds in combination with powders of differing particle sizes: 99.4  μ m (S1) and 8.9  μ m (S2). Initially, the FeSiCr(S1+S2)/ZnSO 4 composite powder was synthesized through a hydrothermal method. Subsequently, FeSiCr(S1+S2)-based SMPCs with a SiO 2 @Cr 2 O 3 @ZnO (SCZ) composite insulating layer were successfully prepared by a combination of heat treatment and cold pressing. Then, we investigated the effect of varying powder ratios of different particle sizes on the microstructure and magnetic performances of FeSiCr(S1+S2)/SCZ SMPCs, and the results revealed that ZnSO 4 decomposes into solid-phase ZnO and gaseous SO 2 and O 2 during heat treatment. Among these, O 2 triggers the solid-phase reaction, causing non-magnetic Si and Cr atoms from the soft magnetic powder to migrate to the surface, leading to the formation of a composite insulating layer. The smaller FeSiCr(S2) powder fills gaps within the SMPCs and provides more sites for ZnSO 4 decomposition and insulating layer formation. This process allows for the uniform growth of an insulating layer on the surface of the magnetic powder, thereby reducing the lattice mismatch while simultaneously increasing the magnetic phase content. The optimal magnetic performance was achieved at a powder ratio of 60:40 wt% (S1:S2), with maximum saturation magnetization (172.9 emu/g), magnetic permeability (31.3 at 10 mT, 500 kHz) and low core loss (465.62 kW/m 3 at 30 mT, 200 kHz). These findings suggest that the optimized SMPCs are promising candidates for high-performance electromagnetic components. Graphical
