Effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) on hatching of Folsomia candida (Collembola) on soil

Liang Fang,Li Zhu,Wang Zinan,Ke Xin,Wu Longhua,Christie Peter,Luo Yongming

Egg hatching of the soil collembolan Folsomia candida and the effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances were investigated. New and effective laboratory methods for egg hatching studies with soil collembolans were established. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs) have been used industrially worldwide and are persistent organic pollutants in many soils. Twenty eggs laid by synchronized adults of the collembolan Folsomia candida were added to each Petri dish containing compressed soil substrate mixed with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), heptafluorobutyric acid (PFBA), or 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (F-53B), and after 25 d of exposure the number hatched declined on average by 6.9%–49.7%, 10.3%–24.1%, and 3.4%–18.6%, respectively. PFASs delayed the peak of hatching by one day, and at different concentrations reduced the number of eggs hatched during the peak by 16.7%–30% and 23.3%–43.2% in PFOA and PFBA treatments, respectively. In the presence of F-53B the number of eggs hatched declined by 73.3% but the number of individuals increased by 29.3% at higher concentrations. The characteristics of egg hatching were stable and sensitive to PFASs, and may be suitable for use as indicators in the screening of contaminated soils for environmental risk assessment.

Presence of microplastics enhanced the toxicity of silver nanoparticles on the collembolan Folsomia candida

Ying Ding,Jin-Ting Zheng,Ya-Ning Wang,Di Wu,Dong Zhu

There is growing interest in interactions of microplastics (MPs) with other pollutants. However, there is limited understanding of the combined effects of MPs and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on nontarget soil organisms. This work aimed to examine the effects of exposure to various AgNPs' concentrations alone (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg kg −1 , 50 nm) and in combination with polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC MPs, 80−250 μm) at 0.1% concentration for 28 days on reproduction, Ag accumulation, C/N ratio, and isotopic fractionation of the standard soil fauna collembolan Folsomia candida . Results showed that compared to the AgNPs exposure alone, the presence of MPs significantly reduced reproduction by 51.4% and markedly increased Ag content in collembolans by 87.7% at 1000 mg kg −1 AgNPs, which evidenced a synergistic effect. Co-exposure to MPs and AgNPs resulted in a noticeable reduction in the C/N ratio in F. candida body tissues by 9.90% and 5.27% at 1 and 10 mg kg −1 AgNPs, respectively, showing additive and synergistic effects. Additionally, this co-exposure altered stable isotope fractionation, with the highest increments of δ 15 N by 32.3% and inhibition of δ 13 C by 2.62%, demonstrating the turnover of nutrients shift in the collembolan tissues. Collectively, this study demonstrates that con-current exposure to environmentally relevant concentration of MPs and relatively high doses of AgNPs synergistically induces toxic effects on F. candida , leading to Ag accumulation and reproduction decline. These findings imply that MPs could alter collembolans' responses to AgNPs exposure, potentially enhancing the metal ions’ bioavailability in soil environments and posing ecotoxicological threats to soil-dwelling organisms.

Ecotoxicity of Combined Polylactic Acid Microplastics and Thallium Pollution on the Functional Traits of Folsomia candida

Yuying Chen,Guoliang Xu,Zhijian Wu,Cao Hao,Chen Yang,Xiaohua Chen

Microplastics can bind with toxic metals via surface complexation and chelation, forming combined pollutants. However, research regarding the toxicological impacts of these combined pollutants on soil fauna remains limited. This study employedFolsomia candidain a 28-day incubation experiment to investigate the ecotoxicological effects of combined pollution by polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs) and thallium (Tl) on the functional traits ofFolsomia candida, including biology, morphology, and gut microbiota. The results showed that the combined effects of PLA-MPs and Tl on these functional traits were characterized by amplified toxicity and trait-specific responses. Morphological traits exhibited lower sensitivity to the pollution treatments compared to other indicators. Exposure to high-concentration PLA-MPs (10%) significantly affected mortality and fecundity, and reduced gut bacterial diversity. Conversely, low-concentration Tl (1 mg/kg) significantly inhibited body length and antenna length while increasing gut bacterial diversity. Structured equation modeling further revealed that the pollution treatments exerted significant negative effects on the functional traits ofFolsomia candida, both directly and indirectly by altering soil properties and soil microbiota. These findings provide valuable insights into the ecotoxicological effects of combined PLA-MPs and Tl pollution on soil fauna, contributing to ecological health risk assessments of microplastics and toxic metals in terrestrial ecosystems.

Trophic predator-prey relationships promote transport of microplastics compared with the single Hypoaspis aculeifer and Folsomia candida

Dong Zhu,Qing-Fang Bi,Qian Xiang,Qing-Lin Chen,Peter Christie,Xin Ke,Long-Hua Wu,Yong-Guan Zhu

Although the roles of earthworms and soil collembolans in the transport of microplastics have been studied previously, the effects of the soil biota at different trophic levels and interspecific relationships remain poorly understood. Here, we examine three soil microarthropod species to explore their effects on the transport of microplastics. The selected Folsomia candida and Hypoaspis aculeifer are extensively used model organisms, and Damaeus exspinosus is a common and abundant indigenous species in China. A model food chain (prey-collembolan and predator-mite) was structured to test the role of the predator-prey relationship in the transport of microplastics. Commercial Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles (Diameter: 80–250 μm) were selected as the test microplastics, because large amounts of PVC have persisted and accumulated in the environment. Synchronized soil microarthropods were held in plates for seven days to determine the movement of microplastics. The 5000 microplastic particles were carefully placed in the center of each plate prior to the introduction of the animals. Our results clearly show that all three microarthropod species moved and dispersed the microplastics in the plates. The 0.54%, 1.8% and 4.6% of the added microplastic particles were moved by collembolan, predatory mite and oribatid mite, respectively. Soil microarthropods (<0.2 cm) transported microplastic particles up to 9 cm. The avoidance behavior was observed in the collembolans in respect of the microplastics. The predatory -prey relationship did promote the transport of microplastics in the plates, increasing transport by 40% compared with the effects of adding single species (P < .05). Soil microarthropods commonly occur in surface soils (0–5 cm) and, due to their small body size, they can enter soil pores. Our results therefore suggest that the movement of microplastics by soil microarthropods may influence the exposure of other soil biota to microplastics and change the physical properties of soils.
