Heteropoly acid encapsulated into zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) cage as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for Friedel–Crafts acylation

Muhammad Ammar,Sai Jiang,Shengfu Ji

A new strategy has been developed for the encapsulation of the phosphotungstic heteropoly acid (H 3 PW 12 O 40 denoted as PTA) into zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) cage and the PTA@ZIF-67(ec) catalysts with different PTA content were prepared. The structure of the catalysts was characterized by XRD , BET, SEM, FT-IR, ICP-AES and TG. The catalytic activity and recovery properties of the catalysts for the Friedel-Crafts acylation of anisole with benzoyl chloride were evaluated. The results showed that 14.6–31.7   wt% PTA were encapsulated in the ZIF-67 cage. The PTA@ZIF-67(ec) catalysts had good catalytic activity for Friedel-Crafts acylation. The conversion of anisole can reach ~100% and the selectivity of the production can reach ~94% over 26.5   wt% PTA@ZIF-67(ec) catalyst under the reaction condition of 120   °C and 6   h. After reaction, the catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture by the centrifugation. The recovered catalyst can be reused five times and the selectivity can be kept over 90%.

Synthesis of 5-Cyano-3-(4-Chlorobutanoyl) Indole in 1-Buty-3-Methylimidazolium Chloroaluminate

Yun Xia Jiang,Hu Jin Zuo,Yong Jia Shen,Feng Ping Yi

The Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction between 5-cyanoindole and 4-chlorobutyryl chloride was conducted in ionic liquid 1-buty-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminate ([bmiCl/AlCl3), the major product was 5-cyano-3-(4-chlorobuty) indole. The structure of the product was characterized by Mass and 1H NMR spectra. When the molar ratio of AlCl3 to [bmiCl in [bmiCl/AlCl3 is at 1:1 or less, no 5-cyano-3-(4-chlorobuty) indole could be obtained. The suitable molar ratios of AlCl3 to [bmiCl in [bmiCl/AlCl3 were from 2:1 to 3:1, the yields of the major product were from 68% to 70%, respectively. When the molar ratio of [bmiCl/AlCl3 to 5-cyanoindole was less than 2:1, the acylation reaction was difficult to carry out, because 5-cyanoindole would be not totally dissolve in [bmiCl/AlCl3 under the situation.

Iron-based nanoparticles embedded in a graphitic layer of carbon architectures as stable heterogeneous Friedel–Crafts acylation catalysts

Hao Zhang,Xiaojing Song,Dianwen Hu,Wenxiang Zhang,Mingjun Jia

A series of carbon supported iron nanoparticle composites were prepared by pyrolysis of two kinds of Fe-MOF materials, Fe-diamine-dicarboxylic acid and Fe-dicarboxylic acid, and were characterized by a variety of characterization techniques. The composites pyrolyzed at higher temperatures are composed of iron-based nanoparticles (Fe3C) and porous carbon architectures with graphitic characteristics. The catalytic properties of these composites were investigated for the Friedel–Crafts acylation of aromatic compounds with acyl chlorides. Among them, Fe@NC-800, derived from the pyrolysis of Fe-diamine-dicarboxylic acid at 800 °C, exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for the acylation reactions, and could be easily recycled several times without an obvious loss in activity. The excellent catalytic performance of Fe@NC-800 should be mainly attributed to the microstructural characteristics of the active sites, in which most of the small iron-based nanoparticles are encapsulated in the graphitic layer of the carbon architecture, thus providing a suitable geometric environment for stabilizing iron species. Besides, the electronic effects exerted by the graphitic layer of porous carbon may also play a positive role in improving the catalytic activity and stability of the carbon supported iron-based catalyst for Friedel–Crafts acylation reactions.

Enhanced electromagnetic loss of polybenzoxazole copolymerized with etched multiwalled carbon nanotube via direct Friedel–Crafts acylation

Yong Chen,Jun Qian,Xin Teng,Kan Zhang,Qixin Zhuang,Zhewen Han

Etched multiwalled carbon nanotube (EMCNT) was prepared via an in situ reaction between Si and MCNT induced by the reaction between Na and I2. Subsequently, EMCNTs was subjected to a copolymerization reaction with 4,6-diaminoresorcinol salt (DAR·2HCl) and terephthalic acid (TA) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) by Friedel–Crafts acylation reaction without any acid treatment or modification. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO)/EMCNT nanocomposites were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The scanning electronic microscope (SEM) images indicated that the EMCNTs can disperse in PBO matrix uniformly without agglomeration. And the electromagnetic properties of the obtained PBO/EMCNT nanocomposites characterized by vector network analyzer (VNA) showed that the introduced PBO/EMCNT composites exhibited a greater enhancement in dielectric loss and magnetic loss than PBO.

An efficient and green pathway for continuous Friedel-Crafts acylation over α-Fe2O3 and CaCO3 nanoparticles prepared in the microreactors

Zheng Fang,Wei He,Tao Tu,Niuniu Lv,Chuanhong Qiu,Xin Li,Ning Zhu,Li Wan,Kai Guo

α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were prepared by using a continuous precipitation method with a valve assisted micromixer in the presence of iron (III) sulfate and ammonia water. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Meanwhile, CaCO 3 nanoparticles were synthesized in a tube-in-tube flow reactor AF-2400. The acylation process catalyzed by modified lipophilic α-Fe 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 nanoparticles in the flow reactor were systematically investigated. Under the optimal conditions, a yield of 97.8% was obtained. Addition of CaCO 3 nanoparticles resulted in higher catalytic efficiency compared with pure modified α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. Moreover, this novel acylation also worked well for other substrates.

Carbon-wrapped Fe–Ni bimetallic nanoparticle-catalyzed Friedel–Crafts acylation for green synthesis of aromatic ketones

Hao Zhang,Xiaojing Song,Hao Sun,Zhenyu Lei,Shouxin Bao,Chen Zhao,Dianwen Hu,Wenxiang Zhang,Jingyao Liu,Mingjun Jia

Developing highly efficient and durable eco-friendly heterogeneous catalysts for the Friedel–Crafts acylation (FCA) reaction has been a long-term and significant target, yet remains a great challenge. Herein, a series of Fe–Ni alloy nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated inside N-doped carbon spheres (FexNi1−x@NC) was rationally fabricated by pyrolyzing the Fe–Ni bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (BMOFs-FexNi1−x) to this end. Various characterization results demonstrated that FeNi alloy NPs (25 nm) covered by a thin carbon shell (5 nm) were uniformly distributed throughout the entire carbon-based composite. A number of oxidized metal species (Fe3+, Ni2+) are present on the surface of the inner bimetallic core, which should be the main source of catalytically active centers of the carbon-wrapped metal NP catalysts. The composition-optimized Fe0.8Ni0.2@NC with relatively higher positive surface charges exhibited the highest catalytic activity and excellent stability for the acylation of aromatic compounds with acyl chlorides. The density functional theory calculations revealed that the catalytic activity of the FexNi1−x@NC catalysts could arise from the electron transfer, i.e., from the outermost layer of the carbon shell to the inner positively charged Fe-based metal NPs, which can lead to a positive charge distribution (by acting as weak Lewis acid sites) on the external surface of the carbon-encapsulated metal NP catalysts. In this case, the external carbon shell can function as ‘chainmail’ to transfer the Lewis acidity (positive charge), and also to protect the inner metal core from the destructive reaction environment, thus resulting in the formation of highly efficient and durable FCA catalysts.

Selective Friedel–Crafts Acylation Reactions of 2-Arylphenoxyacetic Acids: A Simple and Efficient Methodology to Synthesize Dibenzoxepine and Arylcoumaranone Derivatives

Jialin Wang,Jiaqi Liu,Hao Lan,Wenyi Chu,Zhizhong Sun

Intramolecular Friedel–Crafts acylation reactions of 2-arylphenoxyacetic acids are accomplished using trifluoroacetic anhydride or trifluoromethanesulfonic acid at 0 °C or room temperature. Depending on the reaction conditions, dibenzoxepines or arylcoumaranones are obtained in good yields and with high selectivities (83–100%). Plausible mechanistic pathways for the selective formation of the different reaction products are discussed.
