The use of degradable chelating agents to facilitate phytoextraction is a promising low-cost method for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, there are few studies on how plants and soils respond to the chelating agents. In this study, the responses of French marigold ( Tagetes patula L.) and soil cadmium (Cd) to the chelator tetrasodium glutamate (GLDA) was investigated in a 180 d field trial. Five GLDA treatments (0, 292.5, 585, 1170, and 2340 kg hm −2 ) were carried out in a Cd-contaminated soil (0.47 mg kg −1 ) under French marigold plantation. The results showed that the application of GLDA promoted the transformation of other forms of Cd in soil to exchangeable state, and the exchangeable Cd and Fe–Mn oxide bound state increased by 42.13% and 32.97% ( p < 0.05), respectively. The cell wall Cd accumulations significantly increased 9.39% ( p < 0.05) and the percentages of soluble fractions increased by 460.33% ( p < 0.05). Furthermore, increases occurred in soil pH, as well as DOC and DTPA-Cd contents with increasing the total amount of GLDA. The composite application of GLDA (2340 kg hm −2 ) with French marigold reduced the total soil Cd content by 7.59% compared with the soil background. Altogether, results of this study suggested that the application of GLDA can effectively activate soil Cd and enhance the capability of French marigold for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

The effect of N , N -bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic acid (GLDA) on the removal of organic pollutants by Fe(II)-mediated periodate (PI) advanced oxidation process at neutral pH was investigated, in which N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N ′-phenyl- p -phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) was used as the model pollutant. The results showed that the Fe(II)-GLDA complex formed by mixing GLDA with Fe(II) in a 1:1 ratio reacted with PI can degrade 6PPD-Q effectively. The presence of GLDA alters the redox potential of Fe(II)/Fe(III), which allows for a better utilization of Fe(II) under the synergistic effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Based on quenching experiments, sulfoxide probe transformation and electron spin resonance (ESR) signals, the reactive species that play a major role in this process are Fe IV O and IO 3 . The degradation products of 6PPD-Q were detected by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and two possible degradation pathways were proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The toxicity of 6PPD-Q was found to be effectively reduced after degradation by Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) software analysis and zebrafish experiments. This study provides some fundamental insights for the removal of organic pollutants by GLDA-enhanced Fe(II)/PI system under neutral conditions.

Washing is one of the most practical remediation methods for heavy metals contaminated soil, however, conventional washing agents always cause soil acidification and salinization and bring about other negative impacts on soil microbes and plants. This study selected glutamate-N,N-diacetic (GLDA) and polyaspartic (PASP) as biodegradable chelators to remove Cd, Pb and Zn from contaminated farmland soil. The residual metals’ leachability , bioaccessibility , environmental risk and the properties of the soil were investigated after the polluted soil was washed with GLDA and PASP. Results showed that 93.8% of Cd, 87.9% of Pb and 91.9% of Zn were washed out when the concentration of GLDA was 50 mmol/L, pH was 5.5, S/L ratio was 1:10 and contact time was 90 min. Meanwhile, compared with the original soil, the leachability and bioaccessibility of the residual metals were decreased and the stability was increased after washing by GLDA or PASP. The environmental risks of metals were decreased as well by decreasing their bioaccessible concentrations. Moreover, the activity of the soil enzyme was improved after leaching. To sum up, this study provided a theoretical and scientific basis for the treatment of soil heavy metals pollution with biodegradable chelator.

N,N bis(carboxymethyl)- l -glutamate (GLDA) is an eco-friendly chelating agent that effectively extracts multivalent metal ions from waste activated sludge (WAS) flocs, which could potentially alter their structure. However, the effect of GLDA on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from WAS is not well known. Here, we demonstrate that pretreatment with GLDA at a concentration of 200 mmol per kg VSS results in a significant increase of 142 % in extractable extracellular polymeric substances and enhances the total VFAs yield by 64 % compared to untreated samples. We reveal GLDA's capability to mobilize organic-binding multivalent metal ions within sludge flocs. Specifically, post-pretreatment analyses showed the release of 69.1 mg L −1 of Ca and 109.8 mg L −1 of Fe ions from the flocs, leading to a more relaxed floc structure and a reduced apparent activation energy (10.6 versus 20 kJ mol −1 ) for WAS solubilization. Molecular dynamic simulations further demonstrate GLDA's preferential binding to Fe 3+ and Ca 2+ over Mg 2+ . Our study suggests that GLDA pretreatment causes minimal disruption to reactor stability, thereby indicating the stability of microbial community composition. GLDA has emerged as a viable pretreatment agent for enhancing volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge.

This study investigated the efficacy of GLDA (C9H9NNa4O8) for the remediation of moderately Cd-contaminated soil (total Cd, 0.47 mg/kg). A 50-day pot experiment was carried out with T. patula (Tagetes patula L.) subjected to five GLDA treatments (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 mmol/kg). The GLDA doses were administered in two equal parts, with a 15-day time interval between them. Our results indicated that GLDA treatments significantly increased the Cd content in the aboveground and root of T. patula, as well as soil pH and soil DTPA-Cd content compared with the control treatment (CK) (P < 0.05). Under 2 mmol/kg, an average reduction of 9.85% occurred in soil Cd content compared with the CK. Furthermore, GLDA enhanced the transformation of residual and organic-bound Cd into exchangeable and iron-manganese oxide forms. At concentrations of 0 and 0.25 mmol/kg, GLDA increased the richness of soil bacterial communities, whereas inhibition occurred at higher application rates (1 and 2 mmol/kg). The Chao1 and Shannon indices of 1 and 0.5 mmol/kg significantly increased by 29.9% and 7.98%, respectively, compared with the CK (P < 0.05). Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexia, and Myxococcota were the dominant bacterial phyla in Cd remediation by T. patula induced by GLDA, reflecting their high tolerance to Cd contamination. Altogether, this study elucidates how GLDA enhances Cd remediation through its impacts on soil Cd mobility/fractionation and soil microbial composition, presenting a novel and sustainable/ecofriendly phytoremediation strategy for moderately Cd-contaminated soils.

This work demonstrated a novel N , N -bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic acid (GLDA) modified visible (vis) light assisted Fenton–like system which could effectively removal ciprofloxacin (CIP) at neutral pH. The removal rate of CIP in the GLDA/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 /vis system was 97.9% within 120 min and was approximately twice as high as that in the Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 /vis system. GLDA could significantly accelerate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle under visible light irradiation. Radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that 74.2% of the Fe(II) in the GLDA/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 /vis system originated from the ligand–to–metal charge transfer reaction between Fe(III) and GLDA. The hydroxyl radical was the dominant species for CIP degradation. H 2 O 2 utilization kinetic modeling exhibited that 90.1% of H 2 O 2 was used for CIP mineralization. The effects of experimental parameters and coexisting substances on the removal of CIP in the Fe(III)/GLDA/H 2 O 2 /vis system were investigated in detail. The intermediate products of CIP were explored via the high–performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
