Considering that pesticide residues cause significant harm to health and the environment, it is crucial and urgent to fabricate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high sensitivity to detect pesticide residues. In this study, a three-layer structure of multifunctional Fe3O4/GO/Ag nanoparticles (NPs) as an active substrate for SERS was fabricated and comprehensively characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), elemental mapping, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The active substrate was used to detect thiram pesticide through SERS. Combined with the synergistic effect, Ag NPs and graphene oxide (GO) possessed high-density and ordered hot spots to enhance the electromagnetic field; therefore, signal amplification and fascinating sensitivity were achieved. The lowest concentration of thiram for clear presentation of the peak was 10−12 mol L−1. There was a satisfactory linear relationship, ranging from 10−10 to 10−4 mol L−1, with a low limit of detection, high sensitivity, satisfactory enhancement factor (EF), stability, and repeatability. In addition, Fe3O4/GO/Ag was successfully applied to identify pesticide residues in a practical sample. Furthermore, the enhancement mechanism, including electromagnetic enhancement and chemical reinforcement, is discussed in detail. Fe3O4/GO/Ag is a potential active substrate for SERS and can be applied for rapid detection in the food industry, environmental fields and biomedicine with fascinating sensitivity.

Dressings play a crucial role in the management of burn wound. In this study, the cotton bandage was modified with the Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) / graphite oxide/nano silver (PNIPAM/GO-Ag) hydrogel to obtain a novel dressing (PNIPAM/GO-Ag/COT). The healing effect of the PNIPAM/GO-Ag/COT dressing on deep second-degree burn wounds in rats and the changes of related inflammatory factors were explored and analyzed systematically. The deep second-degree burn model was established by the steam scald method in Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats. The granulation tissue, collagen deposition, the expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) of the wound were evaluated by means of the HE staining, Masson staining, ELISA, and immunohistochemistry methods. The results showed that, compared with the blank group (rats without the dressing treatment), the PNIPAM/GO-Ag/COT dressing reduced the expression of TNF-α by approximately 18 % and promoted the bFGF expression in wound tissue. Compared to the control group (rats with the gauze treatment), the wound healing rate in the PNIPAM/GO-Ag/COT dressing group was 58 % on the 14th day, with an increase of 30 %. These results demonstrated that the PNIPAM/GO-Ag/COT dressing primarily promoted burn wound healing by reducing inflammatory reactions, promoting collagen deposition, and enhancing the expression of bFGF.

The composite substrate composed of precious metal, semiconductor and graphene has not only high sensitivity and uniform Raman signal but also stable chemical properties, which is one of the important topics in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this paper, a sandwich SERS substrate based on tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) is designed and fabricated. The substrate has high sensitivity, stable performance and high quantification capability. The composite substrate can achieve a high sensitivity Raman detection of crystal violet (CV) with a detection limit of 10−11 M and an enhancement factor of 1.5 × 109. This is the result of the synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement, in which the chemical enhancement is the cooperative charge transfer in the system composed of probe molecules, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Ta2O5, and the electromagnetic enhancement comes from the strong local surface plasmon resonance between the adjacent AgNPs. After exposing the composite substrate to the air for one month, the Raman signal did not weaken, indicating that the performance of the composite substrate is stable. In addition, there is an excellent linear relationship between the intensity of Raman characteristic peak and the concentration of probe molecules, which proves that the composite substrate has high quantification capability. In practical application, the composite SERS substrate can be used to detect harmful malachite green quickly and sensitively and has a broad application prospect in the field of food safety and chemical analysis.

In this study, a novel magnetic composite (Fe3O4@CS/GO/Ag) modified with chitosan (CS), graphene oxide (GO) and Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) was successfully prepared as an efficient adsorbent for detection of rhodamine B (RB) combined with a fluorescence technique. The properties of the magnetic composite were confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The components of Fe3O4@CS/GO/Ag endowed it with excellent extraction performance and convenient operation. The main parameters affecting extraction and desorption efficiency were all investigated systematically. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the proposed method showed linear ranges (0.2–6.0 μg L−1) with R2 = 0.9992. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) were 0.05 and 0.2 μg L−1 (n = 3), respectively. Fe3O4@CS/GO/Ag exhibited outstanding extraction efficiency for RB, compared with CS-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@CS) and GO-modified Fe3O4@CS (Fe3O4@CS/GO). The applicability of the proposed method was investigated by analyzing four real samples (waste water, soft drink, shampoo, and red pencil) and the spiked recoveries ranged between 94% and 97% with RSD ranging from 3% to 6%, which showed that the proposed method had satisfactory practicability and operability.

To mitigate biofouling and maintain the properties of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrodialysis (ED) processes, conferring specialized functional coatings onto surfaces has proven effective in reducing susceptibility to biofouling. In this research, AEM substrates were synthesized using the conventional chemical assembly method, involving the reaction of 1-butylimidazole (BIm) with commercially available bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO). Subsequently, a synergistic anti-biofouling system comprising graphene oxide (GO) and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) co-mingled casting-solution was formulated into a 2-μm coating through spraying onto the AEM surface. Exceptional static antibacterial activity of this system towards prevalent Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. aureus ) bacteria due to contact killing mechanisms. The dynamic anti-biofilm capability of post-electrodialysis AEM was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing consistent efficacy. Notably, the enhancement of anti-biofouling properties was achieved without compromising separation efficiency, as the coating solution shares the same composition as the substrate membrane. Crucially, the co-sprayed coating technique on the AEM surface overcomes the conventional “trade-off phenomenon” between performance and stability. This approach to fabricating anti-biofouling AEMs is believed to provide valuable insights for further optimization and application, thereby facilitating their deployment in water treatment and related fields.

It is greatly significant to remove organic dyes and antibiotics in water because they are extremely harmful for human health and environment. In this work, we successfully developed magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /GO/Ag composite microspheres, using Fe 3 O 4 microspheres as cores to wrap graphene oxide (GO) interlayer and further in situ depositing silver nanoparticles onto GO layer. The microspheres were characterized by SEM, XRD , XPS and Raman spectroscopy . As compared to Fe 3 O 4 /Ag microspheres, Fe 3 O 4 /GO/Ag composite microspheres displayed higher activity for SERS detection, and also catalytic reaction due to the synergistic interaction of GO nanosheets and Ag nanoparticles. Subsequently, the Fe 3 O 4 /GO/Ag composite microspheres were employed to quantitatively detect aromatic molecules, methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution, showing the limit of detection was low down to 10 −9 M and the correlation coefficients (R 2 ) of the linear relationship between SERS intensities and logarithmic concentrations was high up to 0.91. Moreover, the Fe 3 O 4 /GO/Ag composite microspheres as catalysts completely degraded methylene blue and ciprofloxacin in 12 min with the presence of NaBH 4 . Finally, Fe 3 O 4 /GO/Ag composite microspheres were utilized to effectively follow the degradation reaction process of MB by SERS. Taken together, Fe 3 O 4 /GO/Ag composite microspheres present SERS application potentials in terms of trace and quantitative detection of chemicals, and in-situ monitoring catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

The engineering of multifunctional plasmonic interfaces on flexible substrates is paramount for advanced molecular sensing. In this study, a high-performance, hierarchical bimetallic SERS substrate, featuring an Ag NWs/PDDA/GO/Ag NCs sandwich architecture, was fabricated on cellulose filter paper via a facile electrostatic self-assembly strategy. By employing poly(diallyl dimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as a molecular linker to regulate interfacial charges, we achieved the sequential, high-density loading of 1D silver nanowires (Ag NWs), 2D graphene oxide (GO), and 0D silver nano cubes (Ag NCs).Physicochemical characterizations revealed that the ultrathin GO layer functions as a dielectric nano spacer, which effectively facilitates vertical plasmonic coupling between the bimetallic components to generate high-density 3D “hotspots” while simultaneously serving as a passivation barrier against metallic oxidation. The synergy of electromagnetic enhancement (EM) from the hierarchical sandwich structure and chemical enhancement (CM) via interfacial charge transfer resulted in an exceptional enhancement factor of 2.82 × 10 6 .The engineered substrate enabled the ultra-sensitive detection of paraquat with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 -10 M. Furthermore, it demonstrated remarkable matrix-robustness for the in situ analysis of pesticide residues in untreated tea broth, maintaining high signal reproducibility (RSD < 7%). This work provides a versatile interfacial engineering strategy for the controllable assembly of heterogeneous nanostructures, paving the way for high-performance, field-deployable surface-sensitive applications in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Noble-metal nanoparticles (NPs) especially prepared from gold and silver have been combined on the surface of graphene to obtain graphene-based nanocomposites for novel functions in enhanced performance in bio-imaging, cancer detection and therapy. However, little is known about their cellular uptake, especially the intracellular quantity which plays a critical role in determining their functions and safety. Therefore, we prepared covalently conjugated GO/Au and GO/Ag composites by immobilizing Au and Ag nanoparticles on GO sheets pre-functionalized with disulfide bonds, respectively. The cellular uptake of these composites was quantitatively studied by means of an ion beam microscope (IBM) to determine the metal content in human lung cancer cells (A549 cells) and liver hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2 cells). The cell uptake was also studied by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which is one of the most sensitive techniques being applied to cell suspensions, for comparison. Toxicity, one of the consequences of cellular uptake of GO based composites, was studied as well. The potential toxicity mechanism was also suggested based on the results of intracellular quantification of the nanomaterials.

Most ultrafiltration (UF) membranes can hardly remove organic pollutants with low molecular weight, like Bisphenol A (BPA). This study effectively addressed the issue by immobilizing the GO-Ag nano-sheet catalyst within the finger-like pores of a polymer UF membrane using bottom cross-flow filtration. The catalytic membrane operated under a low pressure of 0.2 MPa and achieved a remarkable water flux of 368 L/(m 2 ·h). By filtering aqueous substrates with BPA and humic acid (HA), the UF membrane could effectively reject most of the high molecular weight HA (>90.8%). The BPA entered the membrane pores could be effectively decomposed (>99.4%) by the free radicals generated by the peroxydisulfate(PDS)/GO-Ag system. Also, the catalytic membrane exhibits significantly enhanced BPA degradation kinetics, up to 19.6 times higher than those of conventional suspension-based methods. Moreover, the GO-Ag catalytic membrane demonstrates excellent reusability, maintaining almost constant flux after multiple cycles with a flux recovery rate (FRR) of 90.1%. This is attributed to the in-situ degradation of pollutants attached to the membrane by the free radicals. In addition, it is proved that the GO-Ag catalytic membranes show significant antibacterial abilities. In summary, the GO-Ag/PES catalytic membrane offered significant advantages, such as a convenient fabrication process and the integration of membrane separation and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in a single step, eliminating pollutants quickly, saving catalysts and oxidants, and minimizing membrane fouling.
