In this work, novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were developed through modification with maleic anhydride functionalized graphene oxide (MAH-GO) via interfacial polymerization (IP). First, MAH-GO was synthesized by linking MAH molecules to the electrophilic groups (C–OH) of GO nanosheets. The resulting materials were characterized in depth by FT-IR, TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. Subsequently, the MAH-GO and GO nanosheets were individually introduced into the polypiperazine-amide (PPA) active layer of TFN NF membranes via IP between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The influence of the MAH-GO or GO concentrations on the morphology and performance of TFN NF membranes was systematically investigated. Compared with TFC-blank, the TFN-MG-60 and TFN-GO-80 membranes demonstrated significantly enhanced separation performance without reduction of the salt rejection. Particularly, the water flux of TFN-MG-60 and TFN-GO-80 was found to be 49.3 L m−2 h−1 and 42.0 L m−2 h−1, respectively, corresponding to 176.7% and 150.5% of TFC-blank. Moreover, TFN-MG-60 demonstrated superior water permeability, antifouling capability and chlorine resistance to TFN-GO-80, which was attributed to the incorporation of MAH-GO nanosheets having more hydrophilic carboxyl groups. Meanwhile, TFN-MG-60 retained a high salt rejection rate of 97.6% to Na2SO4, comparable to that of TFC-blank. The MAH-GO nanosheets show great potential in developing high-performance TFN NF membranes to overcome the trade-off effect of conventional thin-film composite membranes.

In order to obtain acetone sensor with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and rapid response/recovery speed, graphene-like ZnO/graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were synthesized using the wet-chemical method with an additional calcining treatment. The GO was utilized as both the template to form the two-dimensional (2-D) nanosheets and the sensitizer to enhance the sensing properties. Sensing performances of ZnO/GO nanocomposites were studied with acetone as a target gas. The response value could reach 94 to 100 ppm acetone vapor and the recovery time could reach 4 s. The excellent sensing properties were ascribed to the synergistic effects between ZnO nanosheets and GO, which included a unique 2-D structure, large specific surface area, suitable particle size, and abundant in-plane mesopores, which contributed to the advance of novel acetone vapor sensors and could provide some references to the synthesis of 2-D graphene-like metals oxide nanosheets.Keywords:ZnO/GO nanosheets;nanocomposites;acetone gas sensors;two-dimensional structure

With the advancement of nanotechnology, various nanocomposites have been applied in the diagnostics and treatment of cancer. We synthetized FePt nanoparticles which were assembled on the surface of graphene oxide (GO). These novel FePt/GO nanosheets simultaneously act as a chemotherapy drug and enhance radiosensitivity. In this study, transmission electron microscope, dynamic light scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize surface morphology and chemical composition of FePt/GO nanosheets (NSs). Their cytotoxicity in various cancer and normal cells was evaluated by cell counting kit-8 assay, and their effects on radiosensitization were determined by colony formation assay. To explore the underlying mechanisms, we measured the intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and autophagy formation. Monodansylcadaverine-staining, Western Blotting and ultrastructure analysis were utilized to assess autophagy. The results demonstrated that FePt/GO NSs not only selectively suppressed the proliferation of cancer cells, but also increased their radiosensitization. Moreover, FePt/GO NSs induced autophagy, which might result in promoted sensibilization of radiotherapy. In conclusion, with good safety and efficacy, FePt/GO NSs are safe and effective to suppress proliferation, enhance radiosensitization and induce autophagy of human non-small cell lung cancer cells. They are potential for the treatment of lung cancer.

To suppress the high dielectric loss of graphene oxide (GO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) while still maintaining a high dielectric constant (k) near the filler percolation threshold, herein, GO nanosheets coated with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), poly(dopamine) (PDA) and tannic and Fe coordination complexes (TA-Fe), respectively, were incorporated into PVDF to investigate the effects of the three kinds of insulating interlayers on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. The results indicate that compared with pristine GO, all surface modified GO exhibit homogeneous dispersion in the matrix owing to the enhanced interface between fillers and matrix, and that the dielectric loss of the nanocomposites are significantly suppressed to rather low levels thanks to the presence of various insulating interlayers between GO nanosheets, which prevent them from direct contact, thereby remarkably reducing the leakage current and conductivity. Moreover, Activation energies for the pristine and modified GO/PVDF nanocomposites are calculated, respectively, and the introduction of insulating interlayers significantly reduces the relaxation activation energy of the nanocomposites.
