A simple and sensitive method for detecting diprophylline (DPP) was developed based on the fluorescence quenching of glutathione-capped CdTe quantum dots (GSH–CdTe QDs) by using diprophylline in a KH 2 PO 4 –Na 2 HPO 4 medium. Parameters affecting the quenching efficiency, including types and pH of buffer solutions as well as temperature, reaction time, adding sequence, and interfering substances, were investigated and optimized. In optimum conditions, the calibration plot of the quenched fluorescence intensity F 0 / F with a DPP concentration range of 1.67×10 –6 mol L −1 to 1.33×10 –5 mol L −1 was linear. The detection limit (with signal to noise ratio of 3) for DPP was 2.24×10 –7 mol L −1 . The proposed method was successfully applied for detecting DPP in human serum. The recovery of the method was in the range of 87.41% to 117.94%. Finally, the possible quenching mechanism of GSH–CdTe QDs and DPP was also discussed.

We report on a simple, sensitive and regenerable fluorescent nanoprobe for Zn(II) ion. It is based on the use of glutathione capped CdTe quantum dots (GSH-CdTe Q-dots). The bright fluorescence of these Q-dots is quenched on addition of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) due to the binding of DTPA to GSH. If, however, Zn(II) is added, it will bind DTPA and detach it from the surface of the Q-dots, this resulting in the fluorescence recovery. Under optimum conditions, the intensity of the restored fluorescence is proportional to the concentration of Zn(II) in the 0.48 to 90 μmol · L −1 range, with a limit of detection of 0.14 μmol · L −1 . The nanoprobe was applied to the determination of Zn(II) in spiked tap water and river water and gave satisfactory results. The findings were also applied to design a molecular logic gate where DTPA acts as the first input to the system by quenching the fluorescence of the GSH-CdTe Q-dots. Zn(II) acts as the second input and causes the detachment of DTPA from the Q-dots and a restoration of fluorescence. This system therefore represents a new IMP (IMPLICATION) logic gate.
We describe a fluorescent nanoprobe for Zn(II) based on quantum dots, and its use in an IMP molecular logic gate. The nanoprobe was successfully applied to the determination of Zn(II) in spiked tap water and river water.

A simple and sensitive method for detecting LFO was developed based on electron transfer mechanism quenched the fluorescence of GSH-CdTe QDs. LFO, as an effective electron acceptor , is added into the QDs solution for electron transfer, the transfer of electrons from the conduction band of QDs to LFO prevents the recombination of free electrons and valence band holes of QDs, thus causing the fluorescence quenching of QDs. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the fluorescence quenching degree of QDs has a good linear relationship with the concentration of LFO within the range of 0.73–7.30 μg mL −1 , the correlation coefficient is 0.9978, and the detection limit is 1.53 ng mL −1 . In addition, the reaction mechanism and experimental conditions were investigated, and the method was successfully applied to the detection of LFO in milk and serum samples.

A novel quantum dots-based multifunctional nanovehicle (DOX-QD-PEG-FA) was designed for targeted drug delivery, fluorescent imaging, tracking, and cancer therapy, in which the GSH–CdTe quantum dots play a key role in imaging and drug delivery. To exert curative effects, the antineoplastic drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded on the GSH–CdTe quantum dots through a condensation reaction. Meanwhile, a polyethylene glycol (PEG) shell was introduced to wrap the DOX-QD, thus stabilizing the structure and preventing clearance and drug release during systemic circulation. To actively target cancer cells and prevent the nanovehicles from being absorbed by normal cells, the nanoparticles were further decorated with folic acid (FA), allowing them to target HeLa cells that express the FA receptor. The multifunctional DOX-QD-PEG-FA conjugates were simply prepared using the 'one pot' method. In vitro study demonstrated that this simple, multifunctional nanovehicle can deliver DOX to the targeted cancer cells and localize the nanoparticles. After reaching the tumor cells, the FA on the DOX-QD-PEG surface allowed folate receptor recognition and increased the drug concentration to realize a higher curative effect. This novel, multifunctional DOX-QD-PEG-FA system shows great potential for tumor imaging, targeting, and therapy.

The mitochondrial toxicity induced by GSH-CdTe Quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes was investigated. The decreases in absorbance and transmission electron microscopy images show that QDs induce the swelling of mitochondria. Results of flow cytometry indicate that QDs cause a reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). A remarkable increase in fluidity of protein regions of mitochondrial membrane is observed, whereas the lipid regions are not obviously affected. Cyclosporin A (CsA) effectively prevents the QD-induced mitochondrial swelling. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that QDs induce mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT). Moreover, with increasing QDs size, a pronounced MPT is observed. The difference between the membrane fluidity induced by QDs and Cadmium ion and the ineffective protective effects of EDTA suggests that the mitochondrial toxicity of QDs cannot be only attributed to the release of metal ion. The protective effects of HSA indicate that the interaction of QDs with pore-forming protein gives rise to the increase in membrane fluidity. This hypothesis is demonstrated by the interaction of QDs with model membranes and proteins using differential scanning calorimetry and isothermal titration microcalorimetry. In conclusion, as the size of QDs increases, the binding affinity of QDs with membrane protein increases, and therefore causes a pronounced mitochondrial damage.
