Gd(III)/Dy(III)-based coordination polymers for luminescent and magnetic properties

Beibei Zheng,Chufei Miao,Han Xu,Jiaqi Lai,Meng Li,Jumei Tian

Two isostructural lanthanide-based coordination polymers, namely, {[Gd 2 (H 2 dhtp) 3 (DMF) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]·2DMF·H 2 On ( 1 ) and {[Dy 2 (H 2 dhtp) 3 (DMF) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]·2DMF·H 2 O}n ( 2 ) (H 4 dhtp = 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) were synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental analysis. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited 3D networks and isostructures, except for the distinction of the metal ion. Magnetic measurements indicated that complex 1 exhibited the dominating contribution at low temperature of zero-field splitting for Gd(III) materials, and the complex 2 shown the depopulation of the excited excited state for Dy(III) material. The solid luminescent properties of H 4 dhtp, 1 , and 2 displayed a blue emission band, while the solution state luminescent properties all demonstrated a green emission band. The combination of luminescence sensing and magnetism in single-phase coordination polymers may offer great potential applications in smart multitasking devices.

Recyclable Amino-Phosphorylated Polyacrylonitrile Fiber for Gd(III) Adsorption in Aqueous Solution

Gang Zhang,Wenxia Ma,Yuqin Feng,Ming Yang,Zheng Fang,Yongsheng Yang,Weiyan Yin,Zehao Li

The development of rare earth adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, outstanding selectivity, and excellent reusability is important for the enrichment and recovery of rare earth elements. The adsorption of the rare earth ion Gd(III) by a phosphorylated polyacrylonitrile fiber was investigated. In this work, the adsorbent was synthesized by a simple and cost-effective grafting method using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers as the substrates. The FTIR analysis, SEM, XPS, and TGA indicated the successful synthesis of polyacrylonitrile-phosphite (PAN-Phos) fibers. To evaluate the feasibility of PAN-Phos fibers as the potential adsorbents for Gd(III) removal, a series of adsorption experiments were conducted. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model better illustrated the adsorption of Gd(III) on PAN-Phos fibers, and equilibrium adsorption was achieved within 50 min; the maximum adsorption capacity was 120.9 mg·g–1. The PAN-Phos fibers also exhibited excellent reproducibility after four adsorption cycles. In addition, the results of various analyses indicated that the adsorption mechanism of Gd(III) on PAN-Phos fibers was mainly through the synergistic complexation of secondary amine and phosphoric acid groups. It provided a practicable way for the synthesis and preparation of rare earth adsorbent materials.

Ultrafast and high-capacity adsorption of Gd(III) onto inorganic phosphorous acid modified mesoporous SBA-15

Qiang Gao,Jin-Feng Xie,Ya-Ting Shao,Chao Chen,Bo Han,Kai-Sheng Xia,Cheng-Gang Zhou

The development of rare earth adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate is one of the most important issues for enriching and recovering rare earth ions. In the present work, an inorganic phosphorous acid-modified mesoporous SBA-15 (P-SBA-15) was facilely synthesized by a simple and cost-effective post-grafting approach, and its adsorption behavior towards the rare earth ion Gd(III) was investigated. Benefiting from high specific surface area (669.7   m 2 ·g −1 ), large pore size (9.1   nm), and the presence of abundant phosphorous acid groups (1.4   mmol·g −1 ) on the surface, the P-SBA-15 exhibited an excellent performance in terms of capacity and kinetics on adsorption of Gd(III). Under optimized conditions, the adsorption capacity of P-SBA-15 towards Gd(III) was up to 1.3   mmol·g −1 at 30   °C, which is the second highest value as compared with previously reported Gd(III) adsorbents. Moreover, the adsorption of Gd(III) onto P-SBA-15 was ultrafast, achieving adsorption equilibrium within only 2   min. Test of reusability revealed that this mesoporous adsorbent could be repeatedly used several times without significant loss in binding capacity. This work not only provides a new insight into the fabrication of phosphorous acid-functionalized mesoporous silica, but also demonstrates its prospective application in adsorptive removal and/or recovery of rare earth ions.

Rational fabrication of a new ionic imprinted carboxymethyl chitosan-based sponge for efficient selective adsorption of Gd(III)

Enli Liu,Junyou Shi,Xue Lin,Wenbiao Xu,Liyun Feng,Yuanzhi Hong

The selective recovery of Gd(III) from wastewater is very meaningful for the prospective development of economics and the environment. To overcome disadvantages of poor adsorption capacity, low selectivity and complex preparation process in conventional adsorbents, herein a new ionic imprinted carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) sponge functionalized by hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI) with a 3D network structure (PEI-CMC-IIS) was successfully prepared and applied in the selective adsorption of Gd(III). The PEI-CMC-IIS is endowed with lots of amino groups due to the combination of biomass CMC with highly branched PEI, which is helpful for the adsorption of Gd(III). The imprinting sites are located at the surface of channels in PEI-CMC-IIS, which can achieve the adsorption specificity to Gd(III) and improve adsorption capacity. It is found that the maximum adsorption capacity of PEI-CMC-IIS is 38.64 mg g−1 at pH = 7. Meanwhile, the selectivity tests suggest that the PEI-CMC-IIS presents preferential adsorption for Gd(III) with a distribution coefficient of 437.5 mL g−1. Furthermore, the PEI-CMC-IIS displays excellent reusing and regeneration ability. Our findings will bring about potential application in fabrication of other high-efficiency adsorbents for selective adsorption of Gd(III).

Evaluation of Ce(III) and Gd(III) adsorption from aqueous solution using CTS-g-(AA-co-SS)/ISC hybrid hydrogel adsorbent

Feng WANG,Wenbo WANG,Yongfeng ZHU,Aiqin WANG

CTS- g -(AA- co -SS)/ISC hybrid hydrogel adsorbent with crosslinked network structure and superior adsorption performance for rare-earth metal ions was successfully synthesized in aqueous solution by a simple one-step free-radical grafting polymerization reaction among acrylic acid (AA), sodium p -styrenesulfonate (SS) and chitosan (CTS) using illite/smectite clay (ISC) as the inorganic additive. The structure of the as-prepared CTS- g -(AA- co -SS)/ISC hydrogel adsorbent was characterized, and the reaction parameters such as AA/SS molar ratio and ISC content were optimized, and the effects of pH values, initial concentration and contact time on the adsorption performance for Ce(III) and Gd(III) were systematically evaluated. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacities of the hydrogel adsorbent toward Ce(III) and Gd(III) reached 174.05 and 223.79 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption quickly achieved equilibrium within 15–20 min. The adsorbed Ce(III) and Gd(III) could be easily desorbed for recovery, and the used adsorbent was able to be regenerated for reuse. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the regenerated adsorbent could still retain the adsorption capacities that were close to the initial value. The adsorption process was well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic mode and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the chemical complexation between ions and –COO – was mainly responsible for the high adsorption capacity. As a whole, the hybrid hydrogel adsorbent was potential to be used for the adsorption and recovery of Ce(III) and Gd(III) from water.

Lifeng Yao,Shengzu Zhang,Ruobing Wang,Lei Zhang,Yi Wang,Weiyan Yin

Efficient treatment of complex rare earth (RE) smelting wastewater has drawn great attention due to its potential environmental toxicity and the high demand of RE in modern technologies . However, it is still a challenge to achieve the simultaneous recovering RE and separating oil from wastewater. This study makes the first attempt to fabricate a versatile membrane, namely H-UiO-66-PF2, by loading 2-hydroxyphosphono acetic acid functionalized UiO-66 on polyester fabric through one-pot reaction strategy, and reports for the first time the simultaneous separation of oil/water mixtures and recovery of Gd(III). The H-UiO-66-PF2 exhibits standout oil/water separation performance with water flux up to 126,300 L·m −2 ·h −1 and separation efficiency above 99.8 %. Besides, the maximum adsorption capacity of H-UiO-66-PF2 for Gd(III) is reached 156.5 mg/g, adsorption equilibrium time is within 60 min. Moreover, the H-UiO-66-PF2 possesses high stability and recyclability , even after 20 cycles, separation efficiency and flux are 98.9 % and 105,200 L·m −2 ·h −1 , respectively. Most notably, in addition to the separation of oil/water emulsion, complete Gd(III) capture is achieved from wastewater through filtration process . Therefore, this work provides a new design strategy to fabricate the composite membrane with great prospects for sophisticated smelting wastewater cleanup.

Imaging-Guided and Light-Triggered Chemo-/Photodynamic/Photothermal Therapy Based on Gd (III) Chelated Mesoporous Silica Hybrid Spheres

Dan Yang,Guixin Yang,Shili Gai,Fei He,Ruichan Lv,Yunlu Dai,Piaoping Yang

Exploring a combined anticancer therapeutic strategy to overcome the limitations of a single mode and pursue higher therapeutic efficiency is highly promising in both fundamental and clinical investigations. Herein, a theranostic nanoplatform based on mesoporous silica, which is functionalized by hybrid nanosphere photosensitizer Chlorin e6 (Ce6), photothermal agent carbon dots (CDs), and imaging agent Gd (III) ions has been rationally designed and fabricated. A thermo/pH-coupling sensitive polymer (P(NIPAm-co-MAA)) coated on a composite acted as a key “gatekeeper” to control drug release at the appropriate time and location. Upon light irradiation, two-mode synergistic therapeutic effect of photodynamic and photothermal therapy can be achieved by photoactive Ce6 and CDs. Meanwhile, the CDs loaded in the channels of mesoporous silica hybrid spheres can also play a role in handling the “gatekeeper” polymer to control the drug release process. Combined with the thermo/pH-sensitive drug release-induced controllable chemotherapy, this platform shows synergistic therapeutic efficacy better than any single/dual therapy, which is confirmed with evidence from in vivo and in vitro assays. Considering the chelated Gd3+ simultaneously introduced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) properties, this multifunctional platform should have excellent potential in the imaging-guided cancer therapy field.

Dynamic monitoring soft tissue healing via visualized Gd-crosslinked double network MRI microspheres

Chen Tongtong,Cai Zhengwei,Zhao Xinxin,Wei Gang,Wang Hanqi,Bo Tingting,Zhou Yan,Cui Wenguo,Lu Yong

By integrating magnetic resonance-visible components with scaffold materials, hydrogel microspheres (HMs) become visible under magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), allowing for non-invasive, continuous, and dynamic monitoring of the distribution, degradation, and relationship of the HMs with local tissues. However, when these visualization components are physically blended into the HMs, it reduces their relaxation rate and specificity under MRI, weakening the efficacy of real-time dynamic monitoring. To achieve MRI-guided in vivo monitoring of HMs with tissue repair functionality, we utilized airflow control and photo-crosslinking methods to prepare alginate-gelatin-based dual-network hydrogel microspheres (G-AlgMA HMs) using gadolinium ions (Gd (III)), a paramagnetic MRI contrast agent, as the crosslinker. When the network of G-AlgMA HMs degrades, the cleavage of covalent bonds causes the release of Gd (III), continuously altering the arrangement and movement characteristics of surrounding water molecules. This change in local transverse and longitudinal relaxation times results in variations in MRI signal values, thus enabling MRI-guided in vivo monitoring of the HMs. Additionally, in vivo data show that the degradation and release of polypeptide (K 2 (SL) 6 K 2 (KK)) from G-AlgMA HMs promote local vascular regeneration and soft tissue repair. Overall, G-AlgMA HMs enable non-invasive, dynamic in vivo monitoring of biomaterial degradation and tissue regeneration through MRI, which is significant for understanding material degradation mechanisms, evaluating biocompatibility, and optimizing material design.

Gd(III)-induced Supramolecular Hydrogelation with Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Performance for Enzyme Detection

Hua Yongquan,Pu Guojuan,Ou Caiwen,Zhang Xiaoli,Wang Ling,Sun Jiangtao,Yang Zhimou,Chen Minsheng

Here we report a supramolecular hydrogel based on Gd(III)-peptide complexes with dramatically enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) performance. The hydrogelations were formed by adding Gd(III) ion to the nanofiber dispersion of self-assembling peptides naphthalene-Gly-Phe-Phe-Tyr-Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp (Nap-GFFYGRGD) or naphthalene-Gly-Phe-Phe-Tyr-Gly-Arg-Gly-Glu (Nap-GFFYGRGE). We further showed that, by adjusting the molar ratio between Gd(III) and the corresponding peptide, the mechanical property of resulting gels could be fine-tuned. The longitudinal relaxivity (r 1 ) of the Nap-GFFYGRGE-Gd(III) was 58.9 mM −1  S −1 , which to our knowledge is the highest value for such peptide-Gd(III) complexes so far. Such an enhancement of r 1 value could be applied for enzyme detection in aqueous solutions and cell lysates.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation-assisted adsorption of Gd (III) using phosphorylated nanocellulose composite hydrogel membranes

Ruijuan Fu,Cai Zhang,Laihong Geng,Rui Jiao,Hanxue Sun,Jiyan Li,Weidong Liang,An Li

Solar interfacial evaporation was coupled with Gd 3+ enrichment and adsorption. • CPM achieved a high evaporation rate of 2.29 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 kW m −2 irradiation. • The membrane showed good salt tolerance and self-cleaning capability. • Phosphate and carboxyl groups enabled selective Gd 3+ capture via Gd O coordination. Efficient purification and resource recovery from wastewater containing low concentrations of rare-earth ions remain challenging for conventional treatment technologies. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has emerged as a sustainable and promising approach for wastewater treatment. However, its potential for rare-earth ion enrichment and recovery remains largely unexplored. Herein, we developed a phosphorylated nanocellulose/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite hydrogel membrane (CPM) as the multifunctional photothermal material for solar-driven interfacial evaporation-assisted Gd (III) removal and recovery from wastewater. In CPM, multi-walled carbon nanotubes endow the membrane with broadband light absorption and efficient photothermal conversion capability, while phosphorylated nanocellulose and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose jointly construct the hydrophilic layered hydrogel network rich in oxygen-containing coordination sites, including phosphate, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups, which serve as effective Gd (III)-binding sites. Under one-sun illumination, the CPM evaporator achieved an apparent photothermal conversion efficiency exceeding 120%, a stable water evaporation rate of 2.2 kg m −2  h −1 , and a maximum Gd (III) adsorption capacity of approximately 80 mg g −1 . Moreover, solar irradiation accelerated the adsorption kinetics by driving the interfacial enrichment of Gd (III). This work integrates interfacial evaporation, rare-earth ion enrichment, and in situ adsorption, offering a promising route for the purification and resource recovery of low-concentration rare-earth-containing wastewater. Synthesis, Stability, and Relaxivity Measurement of Gd (III) Complexes of DOTA Ligands Derived from Amino Acids

Yuhuan Zhao,Yuhe Yang,Xiaorui Ru,Xiaobo Wang,Chunxi Li,Jiangyan Tang,Yun Zhang,Sanhu Gou,Hui Liu,Jingman Ni

To enhance the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), numerous novel contrast agents have been developed, with peptide modification emerging as a promising strategy. The versatility of peptides renders them particularly useful molecules for the fabrication of new molecule. However, the influence of peptide side chain modification on the imaging performance of contrast agents has not been fully explored in existing studies. Herein, we employed XK (ε-DOTA-Gd) X as a Gd-DOTA-peptide template and the X molecule underwent amino acid block substitution. Six Gd-DOTA-peptide complexes were synthesized and their properties, such as relaxivity, biostability, and biocompatibility, were measured and in vitro MRI assays were carried out. The results demonstrated that the Gd-DOTA-peptides exhibited low hemolysis rates and cytotoxicity. In plasma, the half-lives of the Gd-DOTA-peptide contrast agents exceeded 5 h. Relaxation experiments revealed that the Gd-DOTA-peptide achieved a slightly higher relaxation rate compared with the commercial agent Dotarem. Therefore, the amino acid modularize modification on the gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents were effective and worthy of further investigation.

Efficient and selective recovery of Gd(III) via polyethyleneimine modification of lanthanum-based metal–organic frameworks

Wenhao Li,Lijinhong Huang,Bin Xiao,Xiaoguang Duan,Haike Li,Lang Li,Wanfu Huang

With the development of the economy and the increasing demand for environmental protection, the efficient and selective recovery of Gd(III) from actual wastewater is of critical importance. In this work, lanthanum-based metal–organic framework (LaBDC) materials were prepared by a hydrothermal method, and then polyethyleneimine (PEI) and LaBDC were combined by an impregnation method to form a novel LaBDC@ x PEI composite. The prepared materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Experiments show that LaBDC@50%PEI has the highest adsorption capacity (181.77 mg/g) among lanthanum-based MOFs with different PEI loadings at pH = 5.5, which is about 5.1 times that of bare LaBDC. The adsorption isotherm analysis shows that LaBDC@50%PEI follows the Langmuir model. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of LaBDC@50%PEI follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process is chemical adsorption. It is worth noting that LaBDC@50%PEI maintains good adsorption performance and stability after three recycling tests, and exhibits excellent selectivity in cation interference experiments. Overall, the LaBDC@50%PEI composites possess good stability and hold great promises in rapid recovery of Gd(III) from practical aqueous environments.
