Rare-earth-doped upconverison luminescent (UCL) materials have wide application prospects in the field of nanoptoelectronics technology. However, achieving highly efficient UCL materials is still a big challenge due to the serious nonradiative energy loss in the host materials. In this research, Gd 2 (WO 4 ) 3 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ inverse opal photonic crystals (IOPCs) were prepared using a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) template-assisted method, and the effects of modulations of the IOPC structure on UC emission properties of Er 3+ were investigated systemically. As a result, the emission intensity of 2 H 11/2 - 4 I 15/2 in IOPC was found to be suppressed 37.4%, and the radiative lifetimes of 4 S 3/2 - 4 I 15/2 were prolonged 1.55 times. The effects of the doping concentration on the reciprocal of fluorescence lifetimes of 4 S 3/2 - 4 I 15/2 between the IOPC and the reference (REF) samples showed that the cross-energy transfer (CET) rate and the electronic transition rate were greatly inhibited, which could be due to the effect of the modulation of the effective index on the radiative transition rate and on the decrease of nonradiative transition rate caused by periodic thin-walled structure of IOPC. The power-dependent UC emission properties validated the supposition that the IOPC structure could be effectively suppressed the local thermal effect and thermal quenching. This research presents a further step in the exploration of the new kind of UCL materials with high luminous efficiency.

Rare earth ion-doped fluoride upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), emerging as a novel class of probes and drug carriers, exhibit superior promise for bio-applications in diagnostics and treatment on account of their strong luminescence, fine biocompatibility, and high drug loading. However, the fine control and manipulation of particle size and the distribution of rare earth ion-doped oxides has remained an insurmountable challenge to date. In this work, we construct and synthesize silica-coated Gd2(WO4)3:Yb3+/Ho3+ nanoparticles by one-pot co-precipitation, with uniform distribution (∼130 nm) and enhanced yellow fluorescence. Particularly, the nanoparticles not only possess outstanding temperature sensing performance at biological temperatures in water by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method, but also allow a further serviceable contrast effect in vitro and in vivo based on the prominent T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) signal of Gd3+. Compared with cisplatin and platinum(IV) (DSP), the Gd2(WO4)3@SiO2 nanoparticles functionalized with DSP (Gd2(WO4)3@SiO2-Pt-PEG) exert higher lethality against CT26 cells and significantly inhibit the growth of tumors at the same concentration of Pt. This effect occurs through the greater level of cell endocytosis. The lethality value of the latter is 10 times higher than the former after the same length of time according to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) results. In short, the monodisperse and strongly fluorescent Gd2(WO4)3@SiO2-Pt-PEG nanoparticles are endowed with dual-mode imaging, temperature sensing and anticancer functions, which provide a significant guide for synthesis and bio-application of lanthanide ion-doped oxides.

Multimodal temperature sensing minimizes environmental interference through cross-validation by integrating both upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) modalities and exploiting differences in the thermal responses of emissive transitions in a single activator center. Er 3+ -doped Gd 2 (WO 4 ) 3 phosphors were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. This material nables multimodal self-calibrating temperature sensing based on both DC and UC luminescence and exhibits excellent resistance to thermal quenching. Notably, under 360 nm excitation (DC mode), the 530 nm emission maintained 96% of its intensity from 313 to 493 K, and under 980 nm excitation (UC mode) it remained within ±5% from 313 to 573 K. Additionally, the 824 nm emission (under 980 nm excitation) exhibited a 3.37-fold enhancement from 313 to 573 K, attributed to thermally activated cross-relaxation (CR). We also explored a multimodal self-calibrating temperature sensing system using fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) techniques, employing the I 530 /I 551 ratio in the DC mode and the I 824 /I 551 ratio in the UC mode. Notably, the I 824 /I 551 ratio achieved a maximum relative sensitivity (S r ) of 2.21% K -1 at 313 K. A dual-mode temperature fusion platform was developed by integrating DC and UC channels. In this scheme, the multimodal FIR strategy synergistically minimizes systematic errors through cross-validation while enhancing reliability by combining thermal-quenching resistance and thermally activated emission. This work establishes a novel dual-mode material system framework for high-accuracy optical thermometry.

The new systems of the (Gd 0.95- x Dy 0.05 Tb x ) 2 (WO 4 ) 3 ( x = 0–0.1) and (Gd 0.95- y Dy 0.05 Eu y ) 2 (WO 4 ) 3 ( y = 0–0.2) phosphors have been successfully obtained using the hydrothermal method at 900 °C in this work. The crystal structure, morphology, PL/PLE spectra, fluorescence and decay analysis have been studied in detail via the combined techniques of XRD , FE-SEM, PLE/PL spectra and decay kinetic. The phase-pure of the (Gd 0.95- x Dy 0.05 Tb x ) 2 (WO 4 ) 3 and (Gd 0.95- y Dy 0.05 Eu y ) 2 (WO 4 ) 3 with good dispersions have been formed at the lower sintering temperature of 900 °C. Under 273 nm and 270 nm excitation (the 6 P 7/2 → 8 S 7/2 transitions of Gd 3+ ), the Gd 2 (WO 4 ) 3 :Dy 3+ /Tb 3+ and Gd 2 (WO 4 ) 3 :Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphors exhibit both Dy 3+ (yellow, at 574 nm) and Tb 3+ (green, at 547 nm) as well as Dy 3+ (yellow, at 574 nm) and Eu 3+ (red, at 616 nm) emissions, respectively. The presences of WO 4 2- , Gd 3+ and Dy 3+ excitation bands on the PLE spectra by monitoring the Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ emissions directly provide an evidence of energy transfer of WO 4 2- →Tb 3+ , Gd 3+ →Tb 3+ and Dy 3+ →Tb 3+ , as well as WO 4 2- →Eu 3+ , Gd 3+ →Eu 3+ and Dy 3+ →Eu 3+ , respectively. The quenching concentrations of both two systems are determined to be 7 at% ( x = 0.07 for Tb 3+ ) and 10 at% ( y = 0.10 for Eu 3+ ), and the quenching mechanisms of both two systems are mainly due to the Tb 3+ -Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ -Eu 3+ energy transfers, respectively. The color-tunable emission can be achieved though adjusting the relative content ratios of Dy 3+ /Tb 3+ or Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ , which has been verified by the CIE chromaticity coordinates analysis. The energy transfer efficiencies of Dy 3+ →Tb 3+ and Dy 3+ →Eu 3+ have been calculated, and the energy transfer mechanisms have been analyzed in detail. The (Gd 0.95- x Dy 0.05 Tb x ) 2 (WO 4 ) 3 and (Gd 0.95- y Dy 0.05 Eu y ) 2 (WO 4 ) 3 phosphors with color-tunable emission may have a potential application for w-LEDs.
