Reptiles, the most diverse taxon of terrestrial vertebrates, might be particularly vulnerable to soil pollution. Reptiles especially lizards have been rarely evaluated in ecotoxicological studies, and there is a very limited report for effects of soil pesticide contaminants on lizards. In this study, male and female lizards ( Eremias argus ) were exposed to Glufosinate-ammonium (GLA) and l - Glufosinate-ammonium (L-GLA) for 60 days. Slower sprint speed, higher frequency of turning back and reduced brain index were observed in treatment groups. The accumulation of GLA in the brain of lizard was higher than that of L-GLA. Moreover, the activities of neurotoxicity-related enzymes and biomarkers of oxidative stress were also investigated. In summary, the neurotoxic effects of lizards have been observed after exposure to GLA and L-GLA. Based on the result of the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR), males were more sensitive to contaminants than females. On the other hand, the neurotoxic pathways by GLA and L-GLA triggered were slightly different: GLA mainly acted on glutamine synthetase (GS), acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and Catalase (CAT) and L-GLA aimed at AchE, Na + /K + -ATPase, Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Malondialdehyde (MDA). In summary, the accumulation of GLA and L-GLA in lizard's brain induced neurotoxicity by altering the levels of enzymes related to nervous system and antioxidant activity and further resulted in the decrease of brain index and locomotor performance.

Background: Glufosinate ammonium (GLA) is a widely used herbicide, yet potential neurodevelopmental risks related to paternal exposure before conception remain insufficiently defined. Methods: In this study, adult male C57BL/6J mice received GLA at 0.2 mg/kg·day for 10 consecutive weeks and were then mated with unexposed females to generate F1 offspring. Offspring growth was monitored, and neurobehavior was assessed at 5 weeks of age. Results: In behavioral tests, female offspring showed reduced social novelty preference in the three-chamber test and impaired spatial learning and memory in the Morris water maze test, while open field, elevated plus maze, and rotarod performance were not altered. Male offspring showed no clear group differences in these memory-related endpoints. Golgi staining revealed reduced dendritic complexity and spine density in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Glial markers were elevated, and neuronal marker changes showed region-dependent shifts. TUNEL staining indicated increased apoptosis during embryonic development and persistent apoptotic signals in the juvenile prefrontal cortex, accompanied by cytokine imbalance with increased IL-1β and decreased IL-10 in the hippocampus. Conclusion: These results suggest that paternal preconception GLA exposure is associated with selective memory-related behavioral deficits in juvenile offspring and with convergent glial, inflammatory, and apoptosis-related brain changes. These findings support the consideration of paternal exposure in developmental risk assessment frameworks.

Glufosinate-ammonium (GLA) is a widely used herbicide, but less research has been done on its harmful effects on non-target organisms, especially aquatic organisms. In this study, 600 adult zebrafish were exposed to different concentration of GLA (0, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L) for 7 days, and the livers were dissected on the eighth day to examine the changes in liver structure, function, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and Nrf2 pathway, and finally to clarify the mechanism of GLA induced liver injury in zebrafish. The levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, inflammatory factors (IL-6 and TNF-α), and caspase-3 gradually increased, while the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and glutathione peroxidase gradually decreased with the increase of GLA concentration. The Nrf2 pathway was activated at low concentrations (1.25–5 mg/L) and significantly inhibited at high concentrations (10 and 20 mg/L). These results suggested that GLA could cause oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in zebrafish liver. Therefore, GLA can cause liver injury in zebrafish, and at high concentrations, the inhibition of Nrf2 pathway is one of the important causes of liver injury.

Glufosinate-ammonium (GLA) is a spectrum herbicide that is widely used in agriculture. The toxic effects of GLA on plants and mammals have been extensively studied; however, little is known about its effects on reptiles. In this study, male lizards ( Eremias argus ) were exposed to GLA contaminated soil for 60 days. Physical conditions, organ coefficients, antioxidant enzyme activity , tissue distribution, histopathological damage, steroid hormones levels, and related gene expression of sex steroids were evaluated. In contrast to unexposed control lizards, the body mass index of the GLA group was decreased, which elucidated that GLA adversely affected the physical condition of E. argus . Changes in antioxidant enzyme activities in response to elevated malondialdehyde levels in lizard testis indicated that testes were strongly affected by oxidative damage, and the increased testis index was associated with severe testis lesions. Moreover, alterations of plasma sex hormone levels and related gene expression levels of sex steroids were also observed, and the mechanism underlying the induction of reproductive toxicity was clarified. The activity of glutamine synthetase was severely inhibited in the liver of the GLA exposure group. Based on the results of liver index and histopathology examinations, the hepatotoxicity effect of GLA was confirmed.

Aims This study aimed to elucidate the biochemical and metabolic mechanisms underlying glufosinate-ammonium-induced neurotoxicity, with a focus on brain metabolic disturbances. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered glufosinate-ammonium by intragastric gavage, with saline-treated animals serving as controls. Neuropathological changes and cognitive performance were assessed at 2 and 6 days post-exposure. Oxidative stress and energy metabolism were evaluated by measuring plasma antioxidant indices, and brain levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH/GSSG), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In addition, untargeted LC-MS/MS-based metabolomics of brain tissue was conducted to characterize exposure-related metabolic perturbations. Results Histopathological examination revealed marked brain injury on day 2 post-exposure, characterized by neuronal necrosis, apoptosis, and severe mitochondrial disruption. Although pathological severity was attenuated by day 6, residual cellular damage remained evident. Behavioral testing revealed significant impairments in spatial learning and memory in the glufosinate-ammonium-exposed group. Biochemical analyses revealed disrupted oxidative stress and energy metabolism, reflected by altered levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH/GSSG), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in brain tissue. Metabolomic analysis revealed pronounced alterations in brain metabolic profiles, involving pathways related to oxidative stress, energy metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. Early-stage disturbances were dominated by alterations in glutamate and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle-related metabolites, whereas later-stage changes primarily involved taurine and hypotaurine metabolism. Conclusion Following glufosinate-ammonium exposure, rats exhibited neurological dysfunction and cognitive impairment, accompanied by metabolic disturbances in brain tissue, particularly in oxidative stress, energy metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. These findings provide mechanistic insight into glufosinate-ammonium-induced neurotoxicity and highlight the critical role of metabolic dysregulation.

Persistent weed growing in herbicide-resistant maize and soybean fields is controlled increasingly by glyphosate (GLY) and glufosinate-ammonium (GLU). There is increasing concern that consumers may be exposed to herbicide residues . A Total of 224 samples involved supervised trials and market sampling were carried out. And the levels of GLY and GLU were determined in maize and soybean samples by UPLC−MS/MS method. The residues of GLY and GLU were at a low level in all samples and ranged from <0.04 to 0.29 mg/kg and <0.04 to 0.91 mg/kg, respectively. Deterministic and probabilistic models were used to assess the dietary risk, and the highest risk quotient (RQ) values of GLY and GLU were 2.24 × 10 −4 and 3.27 × 10 −2 , respectively. The RQs of GLU are significantly higher than that of GLY. Risk assessment results showed that GLY and GLU residues should not pose serious health risks to Chinese consumers.

The combined effects of imidacloprid (ICD) and glufosinate-ammonium (GLAM) on submerged plants and epiphytic microbial community remains unclear, despite the frequent co-occurrence of these pesticides in aquatic environments. In this study, a 24-day experiment was conducted to examine changes in water quality, plant physiology, and epiphytic microbial communities in Hydrilla verticillate -dominated wetlands under ICD alone or together with GLAM. Results showed that GLAM+ICD induced greater oxidative stress and a stronger antioxidant response in H. verticillata compared ICD alone, demonstrating that the mixtures exacerbated ecotoxicological effects on plant. Compared to ICD, many micro-biomarkers were obtained in ICD+GLAM, including Bacteroidota, Comamonadaceae, Proteobacteria and Cocconeis . Redundancy analysis indicated that the ICD concentration was correlated positively to Stigeoclonium, Closterium and Cocconeis , but negatively related with Oedogonium and Chloromonas , GLAM is opposite to ICD. More complex interkingdom interactions among bacteria and eukaryotes were observed in high concentration MIX treatment group compared to others. Co-occurrence networks analysis further demonstrated that GLAM and ICD changed microbial interactions within epiphytic biofilm, and impaired the stability and function of the microbial communities . These results underscore that the combined presence of ICD and GLAM poses a significant ecological risk to Hydrilla verticillate- biofilm system in agricultural regions.

In the context of global warming , an important issue is that many pesticides become more toxic, putting non-target organisms at higher risk of pesticide exposure. Eremias argus (a native Chinese lizard) was selected as animal model in this study. As a kind of poikilothermic vertebrate, E.argus is sensitive to temperature change. The experimental design [(with or without L-Glufosinate-ammonium (L-GLA) pollution × two temperatures (25 and 30 °C)] was used in this study for 90 days to identify the chronic effects of the pesticide–temperature interaction on the lizards’ neuroendocrine-regulated reproduction. Survival rate, body weight, clutch characteristics, testicular histopathology , the content of neurotransmitters and related enzyme activity , the level of sex steroid, the expression of Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), antioxidant system, the accumulation and degradation of L-GLA were examined. Results showed that L-GLA disrupt reproduction of lizards through hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad (HPG) axis. In addition, temperature can not only change the environmental behavior of pesticides, but also alter the physiological characteristics of lizards. Thus, our results emphasized that temperature is an essential abiotic factor that should not be overlooked in ecotoxicological studies.

Glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium are non-selective, broad spectrum herbicides for controlling grasses in agriculture and forestry. Rapid and sensitive analytical methods for effective monitoring and subsequent risk control of glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium and their metabolites in crops are not available. In this paper, an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, and their metabolites in maize and soybean by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was established. The seven compounds were well separated on an anion exchange analytical column within 10 min, with the mean recoveries of the target compounds ranging from 78.2 to 110.9%. The method showed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9819) with a limit of quantification for glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, and their metabolites of 0.01 mg kg−1 in both maize and soybean. The method simplifies and expedites the sample preparation procedures, overcomes the traditional disadvantages including derivatization, weak retention, and low sensitivity, and has been successfully validated in actual maize and soybean samples.

The tea shrub is grown in long-standing orchards, an environment that is suitable for persistent weed growth, which is increasingly controlled by herbicides. Therefore, there is increasing concern that tea consumers may be exposed to herbicide residues. In this study, the levels of glufosinate-ammonium (GLU), glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine; PMG], and its metabolite aminomethyl phosphoric acid (AMPA) were determined in tea samples by HPLC–MS/MS using several current purification methods and a new method that we developed herein. The matrix effect of our proposed method was between -27.3 and 27.7%, which was lower than that in other methods, indicating that this method effectively reduced the interference of tea matrix in the mass spectrometry process. This method was used to determine the levels of PMG, GLU, and AMPA in 780 samples, including six traditional Chinese teas (green tea, black tea, oolong tea, dark tea, white tea, and yellow tea) and a floral tea, from 14 provinces of China. Probability estimates showed that the 95th percentile risk entropy values of the three pesticide residues were far below the acceptable risk level. The risk assessment results showed that exposure to PMG, GLU, and AMPA caused by drinking tea beverages poses no significant risk to human health.
