Heteroatoms-doped carbon materials have recently emerged as effective catalysts for various chemical and electrochemical reactions. The free of metals especially noble metals reduces cost and eliminates issues like sintering or leaching of metals at elevated temperatures in solvents. In this work, selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is for the first time achieved over simple nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) catalysts. At optimal reaction conditions, a 91% yield of DMF is obtained with excellent catalyst stability. Extensive characterization, including extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS), model reactions, basic data science analysis, and DFT calculations suggest that ppm of Fe in particular FeN 3 sites formed in pyrolysis, rather than non-metallic elements, drive key steps such as H 2 activation and deoxygenation of –OH during HMF HDO.

Modulating the electronic environment of single-atom metal catalysts is a promising yet challenging strategy to optimize their catalytic performance. Herein, electron-rich Ru single atoms were successfully confined within a CoOx matrix (Ru0.6CoOx) through a simple manual grinding-reduction strategy. The resulting Ru0.6CoOx catalyst demonstrated exceptional catalytic activity for the hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), affording a nearly quantitative DMF yield with an impressive DMF productivity of 210.2 molDMF·mol–1Ru·h–1 at 160 °C. This productivity outperforms most of the noble metal-based catalysts for DMF production. Notably, Ru0.6CoOx also enabled the efficient conversion of HMF to DMF at a low reaction temperature of 120 °C or using a concentrated HMF solution (up to 20 wt %). Experimental studies combined with density functional theory calculations (DFT) revealed that the electronic interaction between the Ru species and CoOx generates electron-rich Ru single atoms, which serve as active sites to boost the H2 activation. Furthermore, the introduction of single Ru atoms was shown to increase the acidity of Ru0.6CoOx, thereby facilitating the cleavage of the C–OH bond during HMF hydrogenolysis. The boosted H2 activation ability and improved acidity of Ru0.6CoOx contribute significantly to its outstanding catalytic performance. This work provides valuable insights into the preparation of electron-rich single-atom metal catalysts for the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived chemicals.

Catalytic reduction of N -nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was investigated over γ-Al 2 O 3 supported bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts (3%(Pd x Ni 1−x )). NDMA could be reduced to dimethylamine over 3%(Pd 0.8 Ni 0.2 ) with a metal-loading-normalized pseudo-first-order rate constant of 836 ± 21 L g me −1 h −1 . Characterization results showed that the reducibility of PdO (or NiO) was improved by addition of Ni (or Pd) in 3%(Pd x Ni 1−x ); Pd-Ni ensembles were formed in 3%(Pd x Ni 1−x ) and there was an electronic transfer from Pd to Ni; metal dispersion was affected by the formation of Pd-Ni ensembles and a volcano curve of metal dispersion via Pd/Ni ratio was observed. The activity profiles demonstrated that TOF had a significant positive relationship with metal dispersion of 3%(Pd x Ni 1−x ), indicating high metal dispersion favor NDMA reduction. NDMA reduction over 3%(Pd 0.8 Ni 0.2 ) catalyst could be described by Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, reflecting an adsorption controlled reduction mechanism. The reduction mechanism of NDMA over 3%(Pd 0.8 Ni 0.2 ) catalyst was proposed to be that H 2 was activated by Pd, and H spillover from Pd to Ni/NiO reduced NDMA though N-N cleavage.

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an indispensable approach to produce renewable biofuels and value-added chemicals using natural biomass and its derivatives. 2,5-Dimethylfuran (DMF) is considered to be a very promising liquid biofuel, and it can be fabricated by HDO of the biomass derivative 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Herein, a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst, Co/HAP(Ce), was fabricated by anchoring highly dispersed Co on Ce-doped hydroxyapatite (HAP(Ce)). Co/HAP(Ce) displayed excellent HDO catalytic activity to convert HMF to DMF, and 99% HMF conversion and 96% DMF selectivity can be obtained under 150 °C, 2 MPa H2 conditions for 5 h. Density functional theory calculations revealed that H2 can be more easily activated by Co/HAP(Ce). Systematic studies confirmed that the high activity of Co/HAP(Ce) can be ascribed to the desired acid–alkali properties, highly dispersed cobalt species and strong metal–support interactions. This research provides a cost effective approach for designing efficient catalysts for HDO of biomass and its derivatives.
