Multi-signal sensors possess immense potential for point-of-care testing, yet their widespread adoption is hindered by reliance on complex nanomaterial synthesis or fragile enzymatic systems. Herein, we propose a “six-in-one” multi-mode sensor for rapid iodide ion (I - ) detection, leveraging only three commercially available reagents: chloroplatinic acid (H 2 PtCl 6 ), hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The core innovation lies in a dynamic “on-off-on” oxidation triggered by target I - ions as follows: H 2 PtCl 6 with strong oxidative capacity directly oxidizes TMB to its two-electron product (TMB 2+ ) (“On” State). CTAB coordinates with H 2 PtCl 6 thereby blocking its surface and completely inhibiting TMB oxidation (“Off” State). I - selectively displaces CTAB via competitive coordination, partially restoring H 2 PtCl 6 ’s oxidation activity to generate the one-electron product (TMBox) (“Reactivation” State). Remarkably, the resulting TMBox exhibits six distinct signal outputs including visual and fluorescent color, absorbance, fluorescence, temperature, and electrical current. Compared to conventional single- or dual-mode methods, our six-mode approach improves reliability of detection results. This “magic cube” signals enables dual-mode qualitative analysis and four-mode quantitative detection, achieving a nanomolar-level detection limit for I - detection. Critically, multi-mode sensor operates via one-step mixing without requiring nanomaterials, enzymes, or specialized equipment. We further demonstrate its utility in detecting I - in biological (urine, serum), food (iodized salt) and environmental (Yellow River water, tap water) samples with recovery rates of 96.3% - 110.0%. Statistical analysis demonstrated excellent reproducibility with relative standard deviations <3.1% across repeated measurements. This work redefines the paradigm of multi-mode sensing, offering a cost-effective, field-deployable solution for environmental monitoring and clinical diagnostics.

Many alloy catalysts have been developed for methanol electro-oxidation, but most synthetic methods are complicated. Herein, PtCo alloy catalysts supported on N-doped carbon sheets (PtCo/NCS) are successfully prepared by a simple pyrolysis of graphene oxide/ZIF-67/H 2 PtCl 6 composites at different temperatures (700, 800, 900 °C) under a gas flow of H 2 /Ar, in which ZIF-67 is served as Co and N sources. SEM, TEM , XRD , XPS and electrochemical characterization are employed to study as-prepared catalysts. In acidic methanol solution, the area-specific activity (1.25 mA cm −2 Pt) of PtCo alloy catalyst obtained at 800 °C (PtCo/NCS-800) is 2.6 times of commercial Pt/C (0.48 mA cm −2 Pt), and the area-specific activity of PtCo/NCS-800 is 3.5 times of Pt/C after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, an improved CO-tolerance of Pt is confirmed. The electronic effect and synergistic effect of metallic elements are responsible for outstanding performance of as-prepared catalysts. This work provides a simple approach to obtain high performance alloy catalysts.

Conformal deposition of Pt-dots arrays on polyhedral Pd nanocrystals can enhance Pt catalytic properties and reduce its loading. Herein, a simple method for the fabrication of Pd@Pt core–shell nanodot arrays (Pd@PtNAs) heterostructures via reducing H2PtCl6 and Na2PdCl4 by l-ascorbic acid in an aqueous solution with cetylpyridinium chloride and KBr is reported. The Pt nanodots arrays with a small size (about 3 nm in diameter) were dispersed on the surface of Pd decahedra. Such ultrasmall size Pt dots arrays can effectively increase the proportion of low-coordination Pt atoms. Compared with commercially available Pt/C catalysts, the Pd@PtNAs show obvious improvement in catalytic performance applied to oxygen reduction reaction. The mass activity (0.20 A/mgPt) of the obtained Pd@PtNAs with 36.9 wt % Pt shows 2.2 times relative to Pt/C catalyst (0.09 A/mgPt) for ORR. What’s more, the Pd@PtNAs with 36.9 wt % Pt exhibited highly stable property and mass activity with only 11% loss after 10 000 testing cycle.

While numerous single atoms stabilized by support surfaces have been reported, the synthesis of in-situ reduced discrete metal atoms weakly coordinated and stabilized in liquid media is a more challenging goal. We report the genesis of mononuclear electron deficient Pt 1 (0) by reducing H 2 PtCl 6 in liquid polydimethylsiloxane-polyethylene glycol (PDMS-PEG) (Pt 1 @PDMS-PEG). UV–Vis, far-IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies evidence the reduction of H 2 PtCl 6 . CO infrared, and 195 Pt and 13 C NMR spectroscopies provide strong evidence of Pt 1 (0), existing as a pseudo-octahedral structure of (R 1 OR 2 ) 2 Pt(0)Cl 2 H 2 (R 1 and R 2 are H, C, or Si groups accordingly). The weakly coordinated (R 1 OR 2 ) 2 Pt(0)Cl 2 H 2 structure and electron deficient Pt 1 (0) have been validated by comparing experimental and DFT calculated 195 Pt NMR spectra. The H + in protic state and the Cl − together resemble HCl as the weak coordination. Neutralization by a base causes the formation of Pt nanoparticles. The Pt 1 @PDMS-PEG shows ultrahigh activity in olefin hydrosilylation with excellent terminal adducts selectivity.
