Fe-doped H2TiO3 for rapid and efficient lithium extraction from shale gas wastewater

Yuchun Ren,Dandan Zhao,Chen Fu,Fei Zhou,Qian Wang,Yongsheng Fu,Tao Gong,Zhenglian Wu

Sustainable lithium-based energy storage and conversion systems, such as lithium-ion batteries, rely on efficient lithium extraction methods from brine sources. Traditional H 2 TiO 3 (HTO) lithium-ion sieves (LIS), though effective, face challenges in optimizing lithium adsorption efficiency and stability. Herein, we introduce a Fe-doping strategy in HTO (Fe-HTO) that artificially substitutes Ti sites, generating lattice defects and oxygen vacancies (OVs). This modification enhances lithium-ion diffusion kinetics and increases active adsorption sites, significantly improving selective lithium extraction efficiency. With Fe-HTO, the equilibrium adsorption time for lithium-ion in shale gas wastewater (SGW), with pH adjustment to 12, is reduced by 20 h compared to undoped HTO. Fe-HTO reaches an adsorption capacity of 37.20 mg/g within 4 h and retains 99.2 % of this capacity after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles at room temperature, demonstrating high structural stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations clarify that Fe doping lowers the diffusion energy barrier for lithium-ion, accelerating both lithium-ion diffusion and adsorption. Given this, the work illustrates the potential of heteroatom doping to boost adsorption kinetics, offering promising applications for rapid lithium extraction and similar resource recovery challenges.

Jing Sun,Xiaowei Li,Yuhong Huang,Guiling Luo,Duanjian Tao,Jiangtao Yu,Linlin Chen,Yanhong Chao,Wenshuai Zhu

Extraction of lithium from liquid lithium resources has become a popular research field, among which H 2 TiO 3 material has great application potential. In this work, we further explored the correlation that the hydrophilicity of H 2 TiO 3 with its adsorption performance based on the existing work. The double surfactants method was used to regulate the morphology and hydrophilic functional groups of the surface to regulate the material hydrophilia and prepare nano-sized lithium ion sieve. The effect of surfactant and preparation method on the hydrophilicity and adsorption properties of the materials were investigated. The results show that the synthesized lithium ion sieve H 2 TiO 3 -4 (HTO-4) has excellent hydrophilicity and adsorption performance reflected with the maximum adsorption capacity of 56.03 mg·g −1 . Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity loss of the material is only 3.8 % after five cycles, which shows a satisfactory cyclic stability.

Highly hydrophilic H2TiO3 ion sieve with neodymium (Nd) doping enables fast and high-efficiency Li extraction

Qing Liu,Huifang Xing,Yan Zhang,Yunze Zhao,Meng Rong,Huizhou Liu,Liangrong Yang

The metatitanic acid H 2 TiO 3 (HTO) with high selectivity shows potential in lithium extraction from salt lake brine. Nevertheless, the sluggish adsorption kinetics and unsatisfying actual adsorption capacity hinder H 2 TiO 3 industrial application. Herein, a rare earth element Nd-doped H 2 TiO 3 (Nd-HTO-1 %) was synthesized. The crystallinity, morphology, hydrophilicity, adsorption property and mechanism of Nd-HTO-1 % were systematically characterized by a series of techniques. Interestingly, Nd-doping promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, thereby increasing the density of surface hydroxyl groups and making the surface high-hydrophilic and particle size decreased. After 1 % Nd-doping, high-hydrophilic HTO was obtained with a contact angle of 16.5°. The adsorption capacity of Nd-HTO-1 % increased by 12.5 % compared with HTO, and the equilibrium time of adsorption reduced by half to 4 h. After eight cycles, Nd-HTO-1 % still showed a considerable adsorption capacity of 39.69 mg·g −1 . In the meantime, the dissolution loss of titanium is merely 0.14 %, showing excellent cycling stability. Combined with the considerable selectivity exhibiting in Qarhan salt lake brine, it demonstrates potential in utilization of Nd-doped H 2 TiO 3 for lithium extraction from salt lake brine.

Spray-drying assisted layer-structured H2TiO3 ion sieve synthesis and lithium adsorption performance

Minxia Liu,Dang Wu,Dongling Qin,Gang Yang

A spray-drying assisted solid-state method to prepare spherical layer-structured H 2 TiO 3 ion sieve (LSTIS) particles is reported herein. The effects of synthesis parameters (calcination temperature, calcination time, and the lithium-titanium molar ratio) on adsorption–desorption performance (the delithiation ratio, titanium dissolution loss, and the adsorption capacity) were investigated. The as-prepared LSTIS exhibited an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 30.08 mg·g −1 (average of 25.85 mg·g −1 over 5 cycles) and ultra-low titanium dissolution loss of less than 0.12% (average of 0.086% over 5 cycles). The LSTIS showed excellent selectivity toward Li + in Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ coexisting saline solutions where its adsorption capacity reached 27.45 mg·g −1 and the separation factors of Li + over the coexisting cations exceeded 100. The data suggests that the LSTIS is promising to competitively enrich Li + from saline solutions.

Recovery of lithium from brine with different degrees of mineralization by resorcinol/urea–formaldehyde foam-supported H2TiO3

Xuezhen Wang,Xiaotong Jiang,Junmin Wu,Kaiyu Zhao,Yafei Guo,Tianlong Deng,Xiaoping Yu

With the development of new energy industry, the extraction of lithium from liquid minerals has attracted extensive attention. Herein, a novel phenolic resin-supported H 2 TiO 3 foam (RF/UF-HTO) was developed for Li + recovery from aqueous solutions. It was found that when the thermosetting phenolic resin was modified with urea and then foamed by petroleum ether with boiling points of 60 ∼ 90 °C under the assistance of 1.5% Tween 80 + 3% sodium dodecyl sulfate, the material presented a porous 3D network structure with a high specific surface area and porosity. The maximum adsorption capacity of the material reached 52.41 mg·g −1 . The adsorption rate was controlled by the particle diffusion, and the adsorption was proven to be an endothermic process by the microcalorimetry. The material exhibited high adsorption performance for low-concentration Li + in geothermal water with a low degree of mineralization. The adsorption capacity reached 21.50 mg·g −1 after only 6 h, and the attenuation of adsorption capacity was only 1.96 mg·g −1 after 10 cycles. Because of the high Mg 2+ concentration and high degree of mineralization, the adsorption capacity for Li + in salt lake brine was low. This problem was successfully solved by regeneration with Ba(OH) 2 , by which the adsorption capacity was enhanced from 0.54 to 20.72 mg·g −1 . Even for the fixed-bed adsorption, the adsorption capacity still reached 8.5 mg·g −1 . Based on these excellent properties, the material and method developed in this work can be used for Li + recovery from brine with different degrees of mineralization and composition.

Inorganic porous carbon as the supporter of H2TiO3 via in-situ polymerization synchronous conversion for lithium recovery from aqueous solutions

Junmin Wu,Wenxing Wang,Wenzhe Chen,Can Liu,Tianlong Deng,Xiaoping Yu

The extraction of lithium from liquid minerals, such as salt lake brines and underground brines, has garnered extensive interest due to its eco-friendly and cost-effective properties. However, the effectiveness of this method is constrained by the stability and capacity of the materials. Herein, a new-type inorganic carbon-supported H 2 TiO 3 adsorbent was developed by a novel in-situ polymerization synchronous conversion strategy. It was found that when resorcinol and formaldehyde containing Li 2 CO 3 and TiO 2 were polymerized in-situ and then calcined at 973.15 K, the resin was successfully carbonized to obtain the carbon supporter with a low degree of disorder, and the Li 2 CO 3 and TiO 2 in the supporter were synchronously converted into Li 2 TiO 3 and uniformly dispersed in the carbon matrix. Because of the large specific surface area and strong hydrophilicity of the carbon supporter, the material exhibited a maximum Li + adsorption capacity of 52.14 mg·g −1 , which was far higher than that of inorganic composite materials reported at present. Even the equilibrium adsorption capacity for Li + at a low concentration of 29.26 mg·L −1 reached 28.51 mg·g −1 . Following adsorption, the Li + in the material was easily eluted by 0.25 mol·L −1 HCl, and the elution rate was more than 90 % within 2 h. Dynamic adsorption using a fixed-bed was also performed at 298.15 and 343.15 K, and the adsorption capacity for the same concentration of Li + was 7.08 and 9.44 mg·g −1 , respectively. Because of the high capacity for low-concentration Li + and the promoting effect of temperature on adsorption, the material is well-suited for recovering Li + from liquid resources, particularly from geothermal water with high temperatures and low Li + concentrations.

Titanium-based lithium ion sieve adsorbent H2TiO3 with enhanced Li+ adsorption properties by magnetic Fe doping

Qihui Wang,Xingyu Yang,Changwen Li,Chenyu Zhao,Yujie Huang,Shuqi Qiu,Yaru Qin,Chenglong Shi

The titanium-based lithium ion sieve adsorbent H 2 TiO 3 (HTO), known for its structural stability and high adsorption capacity, emerges as a highly promising material. Nonetheless, its precursor, the Li 2 TiO 3 powder (LTO), synthesized via the high-temperature solid-phase method, tends to agglomerate and poses challenges in separation. This agglomeration compromises the adsorption sites and, consequently, its adsorption capacity. To counter this, we employed a strategy of doping LTO with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as a Fe source, aiming to mitigate the agglomeration issue. Subsequently, Fe-doped H 2 TiO 3 (HFTO) was obtained by acid washing and used to adsorb lithium ions from an aqueous solution. Experimental results revealed that HFTO's equilibrium adsorption capacity for lithium in LiCl solution peaked at 34.27 mg/g. Moreover, even after five cycles of adsorption–desorption, HFTO maintained an adsorption capacity exceeding 32.00 mg/g. Investigations into HFTO's adsorption mechanism, utilizing Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR, and XPS , uncovered that the adsorption of Li + by HFTO occurs through the dissociation of O–H bonds and the subsequent formation of O-Li bonds.

Synthesis of H2TiO3-PVC lithium-ion sieves via an antisolvent method and its adsorption performance

Zhen Yang,Ying Li,Peihua Ma

H 2 TiO 3 is the most promising and highly selective lithium-ion sieve. In this study, HTO-PVC- x ( x  = 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30) lithium-ion sieves were prepared via an antisolvent method using PVC as the matrix. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that Li 2 TiO 3 was preferentially indexed to a C 2/ c monoclinic structure. LTO-PVC- x had a spherical size of 300 μm and an enormous specific surface area. The morphology and size of HTO-PVC- x obtained by HCl elution were consistent with those of LTO-PVC- x , indicating good separation and recycling properties. HTO-PVC-15 had a higher adsorption performance and adsorption capacity at a lower initial Li + concentration. The adsorption behaviour of HTO-PVC-15 is in accordance with the Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order model, which belongs to the chemical adsorption process . It reached 96% of its equilibrium adsorption capacity within 2 h. Simultaneously, it maintained high adsorption selectivity and cycling performance and a low Ti 4+ dissolution rate. Thus, HTO-PVC-15 has immense potential to be used for salt lake brine adsorption applications.

Surface-Modified H2TiO3 for Enhanced Lithium Ion Adsorption: Dispersion Optimization and Regulation of Interfacial Mass Transfer Resistance

Ya-Jing Hao,Yu-Xin Xie,Ye Wang,Xiao-Jing Guo,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Wan-Zhong Lang

The lithium adsorption capacity of layered H2TiO3 (HTO) is constrained by particle aggregation, which results in substantial interfacial mass transfer resistance. This study employs phenylphosphonic acid (BPA) to modify HTO, achieving dual optimization of dispersion stability and adsorption kinetics. BPA grafting was confirmed (via P–O–Ti covalent bonds) and likely introduced steric and electrostatic repulsion and decreased the surface energy. Sedimentation tests showed that BPA-modified HTO (HTO-BPA) exhibited reduced particle aggregation, leading to faster Li+ adsorption equilibrium (5 h vs 13 h for HTO) and a higher capacity (54.58 mg·g–1 compared to 47.23 mg·g–1 for HTO). HTO-BPA also demonstrated reduced acid dependency during desorption, maintaining Ti dissolution below 2% over eight cycles. This work provides a scalable strategy for designing efficient lithium-ion sieves, critical for sustainable resource recovery.

Lithium octanoate assisted sol–gel route to improve hydrophilicity of H2TiO3 for enhanced lithium extraction

Bin Dong,Huiru Zhou,Yushi Liu,Huiqiu Zhang,Yihan Yang,Xin Long,Changchun Zhou

The addition of surfactants during synthesis enhances the hydrophilicity of the lithium adsorbent H 2 TiO 3 (HTO), thereby facilitating lithium extraction. In this work, lithium octanoate (C 7 H 15 COOLi) was used as a raw material to prepare the precursor Li 2 TiO 3 (LTO), in which it also acted as a surfactant to assist the sol–gel process. The optimal calcination temperature was determined based on powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and equilibrium adsorption capacity ( Q e ) of Li + . The corresponding sample HTO-2 was examined by contact angle measurement, whose water contact angle was much smaller than that of HTO-0 synthesized from lithium acetate (CH 3 COOLi). The enhanced hydrophilicity improved the interaction between HTO-2 and hydrated Li + complexes, resulting in the increased Q e for HTO-2 compared to HTO-0. The adsorption of Li + by HTO-2 was well described by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and Q e only showed a slightly decrease after ten cycles. Moreover, its excellent adsorption selectivity for Li + was demonstrated in simulated desalination brine. This work reveals the dual role of C 7 H 15 COOLi and the critical role of hydrophilicity in enhancing lithium extraction.

A novel Co-doped H2TiO3 spinning composite for efficient lithium recovery from alkaline lithium precipitation mother liquor

Kaiyu Zhao,Jing Li,Jiyu Yuan,Xiaoping Yu,Yafei Guo,Zhenzhen Jiang,Mingli Li,Ji Duo,Tianlong Deng

The efficient recovery of lithium from the alkaline mother liquor with high Na/Li ratios after Li 2 CO 3 precipitation by adsorption has received extensive attention. However, synthesizing composite adsorbents with excellent adsorption capacity and rate still faces huge challenges. In this work, we synthesized a novel Co-doped Li 2 TiO 3 lithium ion sieve (LTO-1/32Co) using the calcination method. After converting to Co-doped H 2 TiO 3 (HTO-1/32Co) by pickling, the adsorption capacity of the material was 1.4 times higher than that of conventional H 2 TiO 3 . To realize the industrial application of the powdered HTO-1/32Co, it was coated with polysulfone (PSF) by the wet spinning method. The saturated adsorption capacity of the material could reach 60.79 mg·g −1 , which was at the forefront of reported composite adsorbents. When the adsorbent was applied for lithium recovery from lithium precipitation mother liquor, the adsorption capacity could reach 40.12 mg·g −1 , and the equilibrium time was only 50 min. The elution rate of Li + could be maintained at 90.56 % with the dissolution loss of Ti no more than 0.43 % after six cycles. The developed fibrous composite adsorbent exhibits excellent adsorption/desorption performance and cyclic stability, making it a competitive candidate for efficient lithium recovery from lithium precipitation mother liquor and other lithium-rich alkaline brine resources.

Beyond Ion Exchange: Unraveling the Complexity of Lithium-Ion Adsorption on H2TiO3

Binda Lu,Xinyang Wang,Yufang Zhang,Qiankun Wang,Feng Jiang,Wanran Lin,Lingfei Liu,Peiyuan Ye,Wang Lu,Zhouguang Lu,Zhenghe Xu

Layered titanium acid (H2TiO3 or HTO) has been extensively utilized as a lithium-ion sieve in studies on lithium extraction from salt lake brines. However, the actual lithium uptake by layered HTO, commonly known through an ion exchange mechanism, is much lower than the theoretical value. The hypothesis is that there is a clear need to further elucidate the mechanism of lithium-ion adsorption for the purpose of guiding the design of a lithium ion sieve (LIS). In this study, lithium adsorption on layered HTO as a function of pH was investigated to gain deeper insight into its underlying adsorption mechanism. Lithium adsorption was found to increase significantly with pH, in particular, at pH 14. To comprehend this strong pH dependency, thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) techniques were used to analyze the state of HTO layers before and after lithium adsorption. Surprisingly, HTO surfaces at pH 14 exhibited fewer hydration layers and a higher abundance of hydroxyl groups compared with values at lower pH values. Characterization of HTO before and after lithium adsorption using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed an anatase type of TiO2 in HTO at pH 14. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) measurements showed a significant alteration in the configuration of hydroxyl groups within HTO layers after Li+ adsorption at pH 14, distinguishing it from the behavior observed at other pH values. These findings demonstrate that lithium adsorption occurs predominantly through LiOH molecules, which displace interlayer water molecules. The results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations align well with our experimental findings. This research provides a more profound understanding of lithium adsorption in multilayer LIS materials and a scientific basis for the design of innovative multilayer structures for the extraction of lithium from salt lake brines.
