The objective of this study was to design a more effective antibacterial agent to overcome the problem of fast-growing bacterial resistance. The results showed that a Cu/H3BTC metal–organic framework (MOF) exhibited a notable antibacterial performance towards Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), and could significantly disrupt the cell membrane, resulting in the discharge of cell constituents. In addition, morphological changes were elucidated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM photographs demonstrated noticeable and apparent changes in the morphology of bacterial cells, signifying cell damage that was further confirmed via confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Furthermore, the result of agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) showed that Cu/H3BTC MOF could enter the bacterial cells by impairing cell membranes and inhibiting the synthesis of DNA. These findings indicated that the Cu/H3BTC MOF is a potent antimicrobial material that can be applied to hinder the growth of pathogenic microbes.

Converting CO2 to CO via the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is an important route to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and catalysts using copper and zinc as active components have been extensively studied for this reaction. Herein, the coordination and acid etching of trimesic acid (H3BTC) were used to assemble and regulate the Cu and ZnO components in the catalyst. First, Cu-HKUST-1 was synthesized by the self-assembly of H3BTC and copper ions, which limited the sintering and agglomeration of Cu nanoparticles in the subsequent carbonization and self-reduction process. Second, ZnO particles were etched by H3BTC to form the complex of H3BTC with Zn and to redisperse Zn species. Under the dual action of H3BTC, carbon-coated bimetal nanoparticles with a size of 2–6 nm were obtained on the fumed silica after pyrolysis at high temperature. The prepared Cu@C–ZnO/SiO2 catalyst can achieve 31.4% CO2 conversion and 99% CO selectivity in RWGS reaction in a fixed bed reactor at 400 °C and 3 MPa. Besides, we also found that the molar ratio of Cu/Zn, metal components, and the introduction order of H3BTC all affected the structure and composition of the catalyst, thus affecting the catalytic activity. This study provides an excellent strategy for the design and synthesis of catalysts containing copper and zinc components.

Herein, we report an effectual method for designing a novel form of nanozyme laccase mimic namely Cu/H3BTC, using copper ions and 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylic acid (1,3,5-H3BTC). This Cu-based metal–organic framework (MOF) was synthesized through a simple procedure of mixing of two usual reagents at room temperature. Amido Black 10B (AB-10B) was chosen as a model dye for degradation consequences. Results showed that Cu/H3BTC MOF revealed significantly higher catalytic efficacy under certain conditions like high pH, extreme temperature and high salt conditions and it has long-term storage stability, which can lead to a significant decline in catalytic activity of laccase. In addition, the degradation of AB-10B was up to 60% after ten cycles, showing good recyclability of Cu/H3BTC MOF. The UV-visible spectral changes clearly showed that Cu/H3BTC MOF is an effective laccase mimic for the degradation of azo dye AB-10B, which was degraded more easily within the time duration of 60 min. The Cu/H3BTC MOF also possessed fundamental activities like laccase with regard to oxidation of the phenolic compounds. Moreover, a technique for the quantitative detection of epinephrine by Cu/H3BTC MOF was established. These findings help to understand the laccase-like reactivity and provide a basis for the future design and application of metal-based catalysts.

Alkylphenol polyethoxylate (APEO n ) is an emerging contaminant mainly referred to nonylphenol polyethoxylate (NPEO n ) and octylphenol polyethoxylate (OPEO n ). A novel multiscale rough composite photocatalyst (CuO@Cu-H 3 BTC) with marigold-flower nanosheets and sub-micron flakes was successfully constructed for photodegradation of OPEO n and NPEO n under visible light. Several technologies (such as SEM , EDS, FTIR, XRD, XPS and EPR) were utilized to characterize the structures and properties of the as-obtained sample. The effect of OPEO n and NPEO n removal by CuO@Cu-H 3 BTC MOF and the influence of reaction conditions on the removal efficiency were explored. It was found that 96% of OPEO n and 79% of NPEO n were removed under the action of adsorption in darkness and degradation in visible light irradiation within 120 min when treating 25 mg/L OPEO n and NPEO n solution with 1.6 g/L of CuO@Cu-H 3 BTC MOF composite. The corresponding OPEO n and NPEO n removal efficiency could still achieve almost 72% and 51% after the CuO@Cu-H 3 BTC MOF was recycled five times, respectively. The degradation mechanism of APEO n investigation revealed that the free radicals and holes generated in the CuO@Cu-H 3 BTC MOF degraded APEO n , and the existence of holes was confirmed to play the major role through quenching experiment. In summary, this facile and novel CuO@Cu-H 3 BTC MOFs composite photocatalyst boosts the application platform in wastewater treatment .
