Developing cost-effective and efficient hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) electrocatalysts that can work stably at industrial-level current densities is of paramount importance for the scalable implementation of water electrolysis. Herein, a monolithic chainmail electrode is fabricated by embedding self-phosphorized graphitic carbon-encapsulated Co2P nanoparticles within a hierarchically porous carbon membrane matrix (Co2P@CTF) via the direct carbonization of a Co2+-cross-coupled soybean protein framework. While formulating the soybean protein framework into a hierarchically porous, mechanically strong, and conductive carbon membrane, the endogenous N and P sources enable the heteroatom doping of the carbon matrix while simultaneously yielding graphitic carbon-encapsulated Co2P nanoparticles. Such an integrated Co2P@CTF monolithic electrode exhibits remarkable alkaline water splitting performance with low overpotentials of 177.5 and 388.4 mV at 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively, with excellent stability for the HER even at 1000 mA cm−2 over 100 h and for the OER at 100 mA cm−2 for >50 h. An electrolyzer assembled using Co2P@CTF requires a cell voltage of 1.69 V at 10 mA cm−2 with a high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 16.8% when powered using a commercial silicon solar cell. This work opens a new avenue for scalable fabrication of monolithic chainmail electrodes with desirable functionalities for sustainable electrochemical energy conversion.

In recent years, there has been significant interest in transition-metal sulfides (TMSs) due to their economic affordability and excellent catalytic activity. Nevertheless, it is difficult for TMSs to achieve satisfactory performance due to problems such as low conductivity, limited catalytic activity, and inadequate stability. Therefore, a catalyst with a heterostructure constituted of a nickel–iron-layered double hydroxide, nickel sulfide, molybdenum disulfide, and cerium dioxide was designed. At the current density of 10 mA cm−2in an alkaline solution, the catalyst exhibits a HER overpotential of 116 mV. In addition, an overpotential of 235 mV@150 mA cm−2was displayed for OER. The catalyst showed a good retention rate (94.7% for HER, 98.6% for OER) after 160 h stability tests. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the following points: 1. The self-supporting three-dimensional hierarchical structure provides abundant sites, fast ion diffusion channels, and electron transfer paths, and ensures structural stability. 2. The strong interfacial electron interaction between Ni3S2/MoS2heterojunction and NiFe-LDH improves the OER reaction kinetics. 3. The Ce3+and oxygen vacancies in CeO2promote the dissociation of H2O and promote the HER reaction kinetics. This approach paves the way for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for various electrochemical applications.

The escalating global energy crisis has intensified research efforts toward developing heterogeneous structures capable of addressing the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in electrocatalysis. In this study, a novel strategy for the design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts was proposed. Uniform Ni nanolayers were successfully deposited on Nb 2 CT x /CNT hybrid supports through a combination of CVD and magnetron sputtering techniques. The resulting Ni/Nb 2 CT x /CNT@NF catalyst demonstrated exceptional electrocatalytic performance in 1 M KOH. For HER, it achieved remarkably low overpotentials of 41 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 196 mV@100 mA cm −2 . Similarly, for OER, the catalyst exhibited outstanding activity with overpotentials of 299 mV@20 mA cm −2 and 337 mV@50 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the catalyst maintained stable performance at 20 mA cm −2 for 48 h without significant degradation, highlighting its excellent long-term stability. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to several key factors: (1) The uniform distribution of Ni nanolayers enhances intrinsic conductivity and increases the density of active sites; (2) The incorporation of CNTs expands the reaction interface, facilitating charge and mass transfer; and (3) The electronic interaction between Nb 2 CT x and Ni further optimizes the catalytic kinetics.

Efficient, inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts are challenging and desperately required in order to complement the water electrolysis of noble metal catalysts. Herein, a porous nitrogen-doped carbon wrapped Co-Mo 2 C dual Mott–Schottky heterostructure has been successfully fabricated by carbonization of Co-Zn bimetal metal-organic framework (MOF) for water electrolysis. The heterostructure is found to feature with Co and Mo 2 C nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated in the highly porous leaf-like N-doped carbon nanosheet matrix. Such a thin porous dual-Mott–Schottky configuration can afford abundant surface active sites and the boosted electron transfer to promote the water splitting. As for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER), it has demonstrated fast kinetics and low overpotentials of 92 mV (HER) and 338 mV (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, the overall water splitting is stably delivered with a low cell voltage of 1.68 V at 10 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH. Density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the interface correlation is favorable to water transfer by electron and speeds up adsorption and water dissociation. The work here opens up interesting possibilities for the rational design and innovation of MOF derived Mott–Schottky electrocatalysts for highly efficient water electrolysis.

Designing transition metal-oxide-based bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent activity and stability for OER/HER to achieve efficient water splitting is of great importance for renewable energy technologies. Herein, a highly efficient bifunctional catalysts with oxygen-rich vacancies of nickel-decorated RuO 2 (NiRuO 2−x ) prepared by a unique one-pot glucose-blowing approach were investigated. Remarkably, the NiRuO 2−x catalysts exhibited excellent HER and OER activity at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution with only a minimum overpotential of 51 mV and 245 mV, respectively. Furthermore, the NiRuO 2−x overall water splitting exhibited an ultra-low voltage of 1.6 V to obtain 10 mA cm −2 and stability for more than 10 h. XPS measurement and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the introduction of Ni-dopant and oxygen vacancies make the d-band center to lie close to the Fermi energy level, the chemical bonds between the active site and the adsorbed oxygen intermediate state are enhanced, thereby lowering the reaction activation barriers of HER and OER. The assembly of solar-driven alkaline electrolyzers facilitate the application of the NiRuO 2−x bifunctional catalysts.

For the intrinsic limitations of CoP in alkaline water splitting (irrational electronic structure, poor conductivity, and agglomeration-caused low active site utilization), this work puts forward a bifunctional optimization strategy: "Fe-doping electronic modulation coupled with rGO support synergistic enhancement", and synthesizes the Fe-CoP@rGO composite catalyst (Fe-doped CoP nanoparticles anchored on rGO) via wet-chemical method and phosphidation. The introduction of Fe induces electron rearrangement by substituting Co atoms in CoP lattice significantly increases the proportion of highactivity Co 3+ sites and optimizes the adsorption energy barriers of *H/*OH intermediates. Meanwhile, the high conductivity of rGO constructs an efficient electron transport network, and its large specific surface area inhibits nanoparticle agglomeration through steric hindrance, enhancing the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) twice that of pure CoP.Bifunctional catalytic performance tests show that Fe-CoP@rGO achieves low overpotentials of 86.2 mV (HER) and 285 mV (OER) at 10 mA cm -2 , which are significantly superior to those of CoP@rGO. When assembled into an overall water splitting device, it only requires 1.61 V to reach 10 mA cm -2 , with no performance degradation after 24 h of continuous operation in 1 M KOH and a Faraday efficiency close to 100%. This study provides a clear structure-activity relationship and a scalable optimization pathway for designing high-performance and stable non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts through the synergistic effect of electronic structure modulation and support function enhancement

The development of single electrode with multifunctional purposes for electrochemical devices remains a symbolic challenge in recent technology. This work explores interfacially-rich transition metal nitride hybrid that consist of nickel nitride and vanadium oxynitride (VO 0.26 N 0.52 ) on robust carbon fiber (denoted CF/Ni 3 N/VON) as trifunctional electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and sodium ion batteries (SIBs). The as-prepared CF/Ni 3 N/VON exhibits low HER overpotential of 48 mV@10 mA cm −2 , OER overpotential of 287 mV@10 mA cm −2 , and sodium-ion anode storage reversible capacity of 555 mA h g −1 @0.2 C. Theoretical analyses reveal that the Ni 3 N effectively facilitates hydrogen desorption for HER, increases the electrical conductivity for OER, and promotes the Na-ion storage intercalation process, while the VON substantially elevates the water dissociation kinetics for HER, accelerates the adsorption of OH* intermediate for OER and enhances the Na-ion surface adsorption storage process. Owing to the excellent HER and OER performances of the CF/Ni 3 N/VON electrode, an overall water splitting device denoted as CF/Ni 3 N/VON//CF/Ni 3 N/VON was not only assembled showing an operating voltage of 1.63 V at current density of 10 mA cm −2 but was also successfully self-powered by the assembled CF/Ni 3 N/VON//CF/Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 flexible sodium ion battery. This work will contribute to the development of efficient and cost-effective flexible integrated electrochemical energy devices.

Introducing vacancy defects and unique morphology is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic performance of transition metal compounds. However, precisely controlling the amount of vacancy defects remains challenging. Here, we propose a facile and efficient hydrothermal accompanying an annealing method to synthesize a series of Mn-doped CoO nanomaterials with controllable oxygen vacancies and unique morphology. The oxygen vacancies amount can be precisely controlled by adjusting the Mn-doping content and is positively correlated with catalytic performance. It was found that the oxygen vacancies amount can reach up to 38.2% over the Mn-doped CoO nanomaterials, resulting in ultra-high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity (HER: 25.6 and 37 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ; OER: 301 and 322 mV at 50 mA cm −2 ) under both basic and acidic conditions, while reaching 10 mA cm −2 for an ultra-low cell voltage of only 1.52 V, which exceeds that of Pt/C/RuO 2 and all reported non-noble metal oxide catalysts. The DFT calculations reveal oxygen vacancies can optimize H* and HOO* intermediates adsorption free energy, thus improving the HER and OER performance. Interestingly, the Mn-doped CoO with rich oxygen vacancies exhibits excellent antibacterial properties in vitro of biomedicine. This work provides new ideas and methods for the rational design and precise control of vacancy defects in transition metal compounds and explores their potential application value in electrochemical water splitting and biomedical fields.

The investigation of highly efficient metal–organic framework (MOF) electrocatalysts represents a pivotal challenge in enhancing the overall efficiency of water electrolysis. In this study, we present a co-liganding method based on molecular regulation, in which succinic (s.a), adipic (a.a), and decanedioic (d.a) acids are employed to modify the original ligand H 2 BDC-based bimetallic NiFe-MOF to obtain dual-ligand NiFe-MOF electrocatalysts with excellent OER and HER performance (NiFe-MOF s.a, NiFe-MOF a.a, and NiFe-MOF d.a). Notably, NiFe-MOF d.a performs the best, particularly in 1 M KOH solution, with an OER overpotential of 242 mV and an HER overpotential of 116 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and it demonstrates excellent stability under alkaline conditions, outperforming several recently reported Fe/Co/Ni-based catalysts. Bader charge and Mulliken charge calculations alongside experimental characterization data indicate that long-chain dicarboxylate ligands can influence the morphology, oxygen vacancy formation, and electronic structure of NiFe-MOFs. XPS and XRD analyses after the OER reveal that the four NiFe-MOFs undergo structural reorganization, with NiFe-MOF d.a having more unsaturated metal sites and more oxygen vacancies, promoting greater conversion of the MOF to NiOOH and FeOOH, which is beneficial for improving the OER performance. The density of states (DOS) results from DFT calculations demonstrate that the d-band center of NiFe-MOF d.a is relatively low, indicating that the adsorption energy of H* is reduced, which can promote the release of H 2 . Furthermore, the hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* ) values of the Fe and Ni active sites within NiFe-MOF d.a are closer to zero, thus accelerating the HER kinetics. This work paves new pathways for realizing dual-ligand MOFs.

Searching for highly efficient, stable and non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) is crucial to renewable-energy conversion systems. Cobalt phosphosulfide (CoPS) is regarded as a promising electrocatalyst for the HER in acid solution. Nonetheless, there are no studies of its HER and OER activity in basic solution. Herein, we engineer a novel and highly efficient water splitting electrocatalyst of ultrafine CoPS nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in N, P, and S tri-doped porous carbon (CoPS@NPS-C) through metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and commercial carbon black (XC-72) as precursors. The abundant and evenly distributed metals of MOFs form ultrafine CoPS NPs, and the rich N organic ligands of MOFs and XC-72 are shaped into the NPS-C to protect CoPS NPs leading to long-term stability in water-splitting applications. Meanwhile, the strong interaction between CoPS and NPS-C in this special structure not only ensures the high activity of the HER in acid solution and the OER in alkaline solution, but also maintains good HER performance in alkaline solution. The results display that the novel structure electrocatalyst of CoPS@NPS-C has great potential in water-splitting applications.

Slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water electrolysis limits hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. Urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a lower thermodynamic potential (0.37 V vs. RHE) than OER, offers an energy-saving alternative. Designing robust, multifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation by water electrolysis remains challenging. In this work, a universal two-stage solvothermal strategy was developed to synthesize α/β-FeOOH-based self-supported hierarchical structure catalysts on arbitrary metal substrates, evading polymeric binders. FeOOH/Fe achieves exceptional HER performance, while FeOOH/Ni delivers superior OER/UOR activity, exhibiting extremely-low UOR kinetics with a 12.24 mV·dec −1 Tafel slope. Asymmetric FeOOH/Ni (+)||FeOOH/Fe (−) electrolyzer requires ultralow voltages of 1.799 V (1.0 M KOH), 1.888 V (seawater/1.0 M KOH), and 1.627 V (0.33 M urea/1.0 M KOH) to drive 300 mA cm −2 , surpassing most similar systems. It maintains >9 Faraday efficiency over 100-h at ≥ 300 mA cm −2 , demonstrating industrial-grade stability. The catalysts’ accessible active sites, accelerated charge transfer, rapid kinetics, and superhydrophilicity synergistically enable rapid mass/electron transport and durable operation. This work provides a scalable platform for binder-free electrocatalysts, advancing practical hydrogen production through urea-assisted electrolysis and seawater utilization.
