Multi-strategy synergy enhances the HER catalytic activity of transition metal phosphides in wide pH

Shisheng Yuan,Tong He,Chengyuan Wang,Guoqing Huang,Zhuo GUO

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis, but its practical application is hindered by high energy barriers and the cost of noble metal catalysts. This study presents a highly efficient NiCoP nanocrystal catalyst supported on nitrogen and sulfur co-doped reduced graphene oxide (NSrGO). The NiCoP/NSrGO catalyst combines optimized electronic structure via cationic alloying with the enhanced dispersion of active sites and superior conductivity provided by the NSrGO substrate. The resulting catalyst demonstrates excellent HER performance, achieving current densities of 10 mA cm-2 with overpotentials of 115 mV, 236 mV, and 283 mV in acidic, alkaline, and alkalized seawater electrolytes, respectively. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that alloying can effectively balance hydrogen adsorption desorption and improve water dissociation kinetics. Additionally, the catalyst maintains long-term stability in seawater electrolysis, making it a promising candidate for scalable hydrogen production.

Volcanic Relationship Between Hydrogen Binding Energy and Acidic Hydrogen Evolution in Single-Atom Alloy Catalysts

Huimin Zhang,LinKe Guo,Jiaqi Liu,Xiaoyan Guo,Yanxin Ning,Xuning Wang,Dong Cao,Daojian Cheng

Generally fabricating single-atom alloys (SAAs) remains a major challenge. Herein, a SAAs library of PdM 1 (M = Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Pb, and Bi) is constructed and uncovered a volcano-type relationship between hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and hydrogen binding energy (HBE). Remarkably, PdPt 1 SAAs, located at the top of the volcano plot, only require 10 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and exhibit 32.9 times higher intrinsic activity than commercial Pt/C in acidic condition. Moreover, PdPt 1 SAAs assembled in the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer can maintain superior durability over 1000 h under the industrial current density of 1500 mA cm −2 . In situ spectroscopy measurements show PdPt 1 SAAs with moderate HBE display the fastest hydrogen adsorption and desorption kinetics in the SAAs library. Further theoretical calculations reveal PdPt 1 SAAs exhibit a moderate d -band center value, which leads to an optimal Pt─H bond strength and thus significantly lowers the Tafel step barrier during acidic HER. Finally, this approach is extended to prepare the other five additional binary, ternary, and high-entropy Pd-based SAAs.

Layered MoS2@graphene functionalized with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots as an enhanced electrochemical hydrogen evolution catalyst

Tong Guo,Lina Wang,Sen Sun,Yan Wang,Xiaoling Chen,Kangning Zhang,Dongxia Zhang,Zhonghua Xue,Xibin Zhou

A novel three-dimensional (3D) layered MoS 2 @graphene functionalized with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (MoS 2 @N-GQDs-GR) composites as an enhanced electrochemical hydrogen evolution catalyst. The few layered MoS 2 nanoflowers supported on N-GQDs-GR surface were elaborately fabricated by one-pot hydrothermal method, which MoS 2 and N-GQDs-GR exist in a bonding manner of Mo-N. In addition, due to the layered MoS 2 sheet edge exposes more hydrogen evolution active sites and N-GQDs-GR have high conductivity, the composites exhibit prominent electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential 99 mV, a small Tafel slope 49.3 mV/dec. Therefore, that the current work will develop HER catalysts may replace Pt.

β-Mo2C nanoparticles/carbon nanotubes Mott-Schottky nanoarray on carbon cloth as freestanding cathodes for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuanghui Zeng,Xiangqun Zeng,Lan Jiang,Zhao Ding,Jiao-Jing Shao,Jie Zhao

s Developing efficient non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is urgently required for the large-scale electrolysis of water. Mo 2 C shows excellent HER catalytic activity. The construction of heterostructures by combining Mo 2 C and carbonaceous materials provides an effective strategy to modulate the electronic structure and hydrogen adsorption ability of molybdenum carbide . The β-Mo 2 C nanoparticles bundled on semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a Mott-Schottky heterojunction has been prepared in situ on the carbon cloth via a facile solvothermal and annealing process. Contributing to the synergistic effect of β-Mo 2 C and CNTs, the synthesized Mo 2 C/CNTs@CC electrode exhibits greatly enhanced HER catalytic activity with an overpotential of 123 mV to achieve a current density of −10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 51 mV dec −1 , and excellent durability. DFT calculations indicate that the CNTs donate electrons to β-Mo 2 C to enhance the coupling interfaces within β-Mo 2 C and CNTs and modify the electronic structure, resulting in a lower reaction barrier in the Volmer step and faster HER activities. This work provides a synthetic route to Mott-Schottky heterostructure Mo 2 C/CNTs with excellent HER catalytic activity.
