Construction of S-scheme heterojunction via Cu2ZnSnS4 coupled with g-C3N4 for enhancing HER performance

Adil Raza,Azhar Ali Haidry,Zhengjun Yao,Talha Amin,Muhammad Ahsan,Razan A. Alshgari,Saikh Mohammad

It is shown that replacing non-noble metals with noble metals in photocatalytic water splitting is pivotal for increased and sustained hydrogen production. However, the challenge persists in designing and developing a cost-effective, highly active catalyst with effective carrier separation and providing sufficient H + reduction sites to enhance photocatalytic H 2 evolution efficiency. Herein, a series of S-scheme Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 /g-C 3 N 4 (CZTS/CN) heterojunction composites were prepared via the hydrothermal method, followed by comprehensive characterizations for in-depth investigation. The TEM image exhibits a clear interface, showing the heterojunction formation between CZTS and CN nanosheets. The results show that incorporating CZTS cocatalyst significantly improves CN photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and its performance is notably influenced by CZTS to CN mass ratio. Among CZTS/CN heterojunction composites, the 5% CZTS/CN heterojunction composite exhibited a significantly improved HER of 243.64 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 29.4 and 7.08 folds superior as compared to CN (8.29 μmol g −1 h −1 ) and CZTS (34.42 μmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. The mechanism study revealed that the excellent superior H 2 evolution performance resulted from the established internal electric field (IEF) in p-n heterojunction, which expedites the efficient separation and migration of photoinduced carriers coupled with the distinctive flower-like configuration of CZTS offering a substantial surface area and enough active reduction sites for photocatalysis process. This work presents a rational design and an inexpensive and efficient heterojunction photocatalysis system suitable for diverse applications.

A highly efficient and robust hybrid structure of CoNiN@NiFe LDH for overall water splitting by accelerating hydrogen evolution kinetics on NiFe LDH

Jie Wang,Guicai Lv,Cheng Wang

Hydrogen production by electrochemical overall water splitting is considered as a clean and renewable approach for greener energy. However, the efficiency of water electrolysis suffers from the sluggish kinetics and high overpotential of OER. Although NiFe LDH is regarded as a promising OER catalyst, it faces the problem of poor conductivity, resulting in the limitations of HER performance. Herein, a hybrid nano-architecture of CoNiN@NiFe LDH as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting is fabricated via in-situ electrochemically assembling hierarchical NiFe LDH nanosheets on the surface of CoNiN. CoNiN@NiFe LDH shows excellent activities for OER with the overpotentials of 227 and 291 mV to deliver the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, an alkaline electrolyzer with CoNiN@NiFe LDH as anode and cathode requires a cell voltage of 1.63 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . In addition, the excellent stability with 100 h towards overall water splitting outperforms most transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts. The superior performance is attributed to the abundant active sites, the strong electronic interaction, and the corresponding metal (oxy)hydroxides species generated by in situ surface reconstruction and phase transformation.

A “MOFs plus MOFs” strategy toward Co–Mo2N tubes for efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting

Xia Shi,Aiping Wu,Haijing Yan,Lin Zhang,Chungui Tian,Lei Wang,Honggang Fu

The rational combination of early-transition metal nitrides (ETMNs) with late-transition metals (LTMs) is a promising method for the design of highly efficient catalysts. Herein, we report the design of Co–Mo2N tubes based on a “MOFs plus MOFs” strategy for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting in 1 M KOH. The 1-D Mo-MOFs (Mo source) were prepared in large quantities by the reaction of imidazole with MoO3. ZIF-67 (Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67) (Co source) was then grown on the 1-D Mo-MOFs (Mo-based metal–organic frameworks) to obtain ZIF-67/Mo-MOFs by a solution-phase assembly method. The effective combination is due to the similarity of the ligands in the two MOFs. After nitriding, the ZIF-67 was converted into Co metal, and Mo-MOFs were converted into hollow Mo2N, thus giving a hollow Co–Mo2N hybrid with a Co outer layer on the Mo2N inner core. The ratio of Co and Mo in Co–Mo2N can be easily tuned to give optimized catalysts. The tests indicated that the combination of Co and Mo2N can significantly boost the HER performance of materials. At the current density of 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential (η10) on Co–Mo2N was only 76 mV, which is much lower than 296 mV for Mo2N derived from Mo-MOFs and 180 mV for Co–carbon from ZIF-67. The hybrid has also shown improved OER activity in comparison with Mo2N and Co; therefore, the Co–Mo2N can be used as both anode and cathode for an overall water-splitting cell with η10 of 1.576 V. The improved HER activity can be ascribed to the intimate contact between Co and Mo2N for optimized adsorption on reagents, the tube-like structure for easy mass transfer and the good conductivity of Mo2N, which is favourable for transmitting charge.

An efficient Co3S4/CoP hybrid catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Wang Tingting,Wu Liqian,Xu Xiaobing,Sun Yuan,Wang Yuanqi,Zhong Wei,Du Youwei

The development of efficient, universal and inexpensive electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is central to the area of sustainable energy conversion. Considering the Co-based sulfides/phosphides have the same catalytic mechanism with the hydrogenases occurring in nature. Here, a new catalyst based on Co 3 S 4 /CoP hybrid that is comprised entirely cheap and earthabundant elements, was first synthesized via a two-step method, the Co(CO 3 ) 0.5 (OH)·0.11H 2 O precursor was prepared by a hydrothermal method, followed by phosphidation and sulphidation under Ar atmosphere simultaneously. The resulting Co 3 S 4 /CoP hybrid material possessed porous core-shell structure with a homogeneous element distribution and large electroactive surface area (~21.04 mF cm −2 ). More importantly, the nanostructured Co 3 S 4 /CoP electrode exhibits excellent HER properties in acid medium with a low onset overpotential of 34 mV, a small Tafel slope of 45 mV dec −1 , as well as a large exchange current density of 150 μA cm −2 . These results obtained in this study indicate that the Co 3 S 4 /CoP hybrid nanorod is promising replacement to the Pt-based catalysts for H 2 production. Moreover, the synthetic method presented in this work can provide an efficient way to synthesis other nanocomposites.

Design Superior Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst by Engineering Dual Active Sites for Water Dissociation and Hydrogen Desorption

Jianpo Chen,Qiuyan Jin,Yinwei Li,Yan Li,Hao Cui,Chengxin Wang

In alkaline media, the water-dissociation-related Volmer process always suppresses the hydrogen formation/desorption process, which makes it challenging to develop non-noble-metal alkaline electrocatalysts with excellent catalytic activity. Here, we proposed a two-pronged strategy to simultaneously promote the kinetic process of both water dissociation and hydrogen desorption with the Co-doped WO2/amorphous CoxW hybrid electrocatalyst. Impressively, the optimized hybrid exhibits an outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with the quite small Tafel slope of 19.77 mV dec–1 and ultralow overpotential of just 25 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in alkaline media. Both experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the top-level HER performance can be attributed to the cooperation of two different active components, in which the water molecule can easily be activated on the amorphous CoxW with low energy barrier (ΔGw = 0.46 eV), while hydrogen atoms can rapidly desorb from the Co-doped WO2 with an optimal Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH* = −0.06 eV). Also, the density functional theory calculation further confirms that the H* tends to combine with another H* via Tafel step rather than Heyrovsky step. The findings provide unique insights for the development of the state-of-the-art non-noble-metal HER electrocatalyst with a Pt-like kinetic behavior in alkaline media.

Better than Pt in all-pH media: A charge transfer modulating hydrogen adsorption in cobalt-rhodium alloy aerogel to boost hydrogen evolution

Su Yan,Xia Yang,Mengxiao Zhong,Weimo Li,Xiaojie Chen,Jiaqi Xu,Wei Chen,GuangTao Yu,Ce Wang,Xiaofeng Lu

In this study, a series of X-Rh (X = Fe, Co, Ni) alloy aerogels (AGs) are constructed via a galvanic replacement strategy. Due to the optimized electronic structure and the unique features of metal aerogel, the resultant Co AG-Rh500 electrocatalyst exhibits much better HER activity and robust stability than the benchmark commercial Pt/C catalyst in all-pH media. Theoretical result further reveals that the top sites of Co and Rh atoms in the (0   0   1) and (1   0   0) surfaces of the hybrid CoRh alloy systems can act as the active sites especially in an acidic condition, while the bridge and hollow sites on the (0   0   1) and (1   0   0) surfaces of CoRh alloy contribute a lot to the superior HER kinetics in alkaline and neutral electrolytes. Furthermore, the apparent electron transfer between Co and Rh atoms modulates the adsorption state of H*, thereby promoting the HER performance.

Hollow Rh nanoparticles with nanoporous shell as efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Jian Du,Xilong Wang,Chao Li,Xin-Yu Liu,Lin Gu,Han-Pu Liang

Studies on highly effective electrocatalysts for producing hydrogen via electrochemical water splitting is of great significance due to the increasing demand of clean and sustainable hydrogen energy economy. In this work, hollow RhCo nanoparticles with an average diameter of 21 nm were fabricated using the galvanic replacement method in a water-ice bath. Electrochemical evaluation showed that the as-synthesized electrocatalyst exhibited better performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acid condition, with a lower overpotential of 28.1 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a lower Tafel slope of 24 mV dec −1 , in comparison with commercial Rh/C. The better HER performance of the as-prepared hollow Rh nanoparticles could be attributed to the larger surface area than commercial Rh nanoparticles, which could provide more active sites and therefore improve the electrocatalytic performance.

Promoting the hydrogen evolution performance of 1T-MoSe2-Se: Optimizing the two-dimensional structure of MoSe2 by layered double hydroxide limited growth

Chao Yu,Zhanfang Cao,Shuang Chen,Shuai Wang,Hong Zhong

Designing of catalysts with high activity and earth abundance which can further enhance the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance so as to improve the hydrogen production efficiency. In this paper, we synthesized 1T-MoSe 2 -Se/MgAl-LDH composites by in-situ hydrothermal reduction method. The high proportion 1T phase (73.73%) of ultra-thin layer 1T-MoSe 2 -Se was obtained by acid dissolution operation, which can be ascribed to the limiting growth effect of MgAl-LDH. Compared to Pure MoSe 2 , it dramatically improved HER catalytic activity. the optimal 1T-MoSe 2 -Se (24 h) exhibits superior HER performance with a small overpotential (122 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 ) and Tafel slope (54 mV dec −1 ) as well as excellent electrochemical stability. The introduction of Se can promote the conductivity of 1T-MoSe 2 -Se catalyst. Moreover, the best electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance can be exhibited synergistically only when the optimal match between MoSe 2 and Se is achieved, which are confirmed by XPS analysis and HER test results.

Tailoring Fe-doped Co3O4 Nanoparticles via Ultrasonic Cell Disruption: Mechanistic Insights and High-Performance Alkaline HER Electrocatalysts

Mutian Zhang,Ziying Ji,Shijie Pan,Xiang Liu,Wei Zheng,Jiajia Wang,Guobing Ying

In this study, Fe-doped Co3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized using a hydrothermal method followed by ultrasonic cell disruption to enhance the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. Through a dual-modification strategy combining elemental doping and morphology engineering, structural characterizations confirmed that Fe doping induces lattice distortions and optimizes the electronic structure, while ultrasonic cell disruption effectively reduces particle size to ~50 nm and increases active site density. The 10Fe-Co3O4 Ultrasonicated Nanoparticles (UNPs) catalyst showed remarkable HER performance, with overpotentials of 210.7 mV and 264.0 mV at 10 and 100 mA/cm2, respectively, and a Tafel slope of 75.2 mV/dec in 1 M KOH. DFT calculations indicate that Fe doping improves water adsorption, lowers energy barriers in the Volmer and Heyrovsky steps, and shifts the d-band center, thereby accelerating HER kinetics. The 10Fe-Co3O4 UNPs catalyst also demonstrated excellent durability, maintaining stable performance over 24 hours under high current densities. This work highlights the potential of Fe-doped Co3O4 as a cost-effective, high-efficiency, non-noble metal-based catalyst for HER, providing valuable insights into catalyst design and advancing sustainable hydrogen production technologies.

Improved Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Performance of Dealloying Fe75−xCoxSi12.5B12.5 Electrocatalyst

Si-Cheng Zhong,Zhe Cui,Jia Li,Guang-Run Tian,Zhong-Hong Zhou,Hong-Fei Jiao,Jie-Fu Xiong,Li-Chen Wang,Jun Xiang,Fu-Fa Wu,Rong-Da Zhao

The electrocatalytic performance of a Fe65Co10Si12.5B12.5Fe-based compounds toward alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is enhanced by dealloying. The dealloying process produced a large number of nanosheets on the surface of NS-Fe65Co10Si12.5B12.5, which greatly increased the specific surface area of the electrode. When the dealloying time is 3 h, the overpotential of NS-Fe65Co10Si12.5B12.5is only 175.1 mV at 1.0 M KOH and 10 mA cm−2, while under the same conditions, the overpotential of Fe65Co10Si12.5B12.5is 215 mV, which is reduced. In addition, dealloying treated electrodes also show better HER performance than un-dealloying treated electrodes. With the increase in Co doping amount, the overpotential of the hydrogen evolution reaction decreases, and the hydrogen evolution activity is the best when the addition amount of Co is 10%. This work not only provides a basic understanding of the relationship between surface activity and the dealloying of HER catalysts, but also paves a new way for doping transition metal elements in Fe-based electrocatalysts working in alkaline media.

Host dependent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Ni/TiO2 composites

Peng Zhou,Shuhua Wang,Guangyao Zhai,Xingshuai Lv,Yuanyuan Liu,Zeyan Wang,Peng Wang,Zhaoke Zheng,Hefeng Cheng,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang

Ni/TiO2 as a classic system has been widely studied in the traditional catalysis field including the water-gas shift reaction and selective oxidation/hydrogenation. However, in terms of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), there is still a lack of systematic research on the actual synergistic promotion effect on the performance, and the influence of the host material on the electronic interaction between Ni and TiO2 is still unclear. Herein, we synthesized a series of Ni/TiO2 composites with different forms and tested the relevant HER performance. The results show that Ni/TiO2 exhibits much better HER performance than pure Ni and there is one type of electronic interaction between Ni and TiO2 in the composite with different forms, that is, electrons transfer from Ni to TiO2. However, the interaction strength is host dependent, and the composite with Ni as the host displays the strongest interaction, and therefore the best HER performance (46 mV at 10 mA cm−2).
