Summary To circumvent the expensive cost of precious metal electrocatalysts, a hydrothermal method and a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method have been used to prepareNiS 2 -Ni(OH) 2 /NF-PECVD (N-PECVD) with excellent properties. After XRD, SEM, XPS, and other characterization methods, it can be seen that after the hydrothermal reaction of Ni foam (NF), 50-60 nm Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets have grown on the NF frame. The subsequent PECVD reaction produces 90 nm NiS 2 -Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets on the NF frame. The hydrogen release overpotentials in the acidic solution and alkaline solution are 90 and 95 mV ( j = 10 mA/cm 2 ), respectively. And the Tafel slopes reach 80 and 83.6 mV/dec, respectively. The chronopotential (CP) test shows that the material has good HER stability over 12 h. The results from the subsequent electric double layer capacitance and alternating current impedance (EIS) tests show that N-PECVD synthesized by PECVD has a relatively large active electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and a low electrochemical impedance. This study not only finds good inspiration for the synthesis of cheap HER catalysts but also provides a valuable reference for the synthesis of materials in other fields.
Recently, ruthenium telluride (RuTe 2 ) has received widespread attention as an effective HER catalyst. In this work, ultrafine and well-dispersed RuTe 2 nanoparticles anchored on nitrogen and boron co-doped graphene (RuTe 2 /BNG) was developed by freeze-drying and facile pyrolysis method, demonstrating a brilliant HER performance. The overpotential of RuTe 2 /BNG at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 is only 34 and 16 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH solution, respectively. More importantly, the RuTe 2 /BNG can also maintain significantly robust HER stability during long-term chronopotentiometry measurements. The outstanding HER activity of RuTe 2 /BNG should be ascribed to its properties with abundant defects, large specific surface area, high electronic conductivity and short mass transfer path. Our work offers a new path to fabricate efficient HER catalysts by homogeneously anchoring RuTe 2 on B, N co-doped graphene.

To find alternative solutions for the high cost of noble metals in the process of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, a hydrothermal method was used to in situ grow a precursor material with nanosheet (100 nm) and nanorod (100 nm) micromorphologies on the surface of a Ni foam (NF). Subsequently, phosphorylation was performed on the precursor surface by a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method to obtain a nickel-cobalt double metal phosphide with a needle-like nanoarray morphology. NiCoP-PECVD has a simple preparation method and a regular morphology, and it has excellent HER performance over a large pH range as evidenced from electrochemical tests. When the current density is 10 mA·cm -2 , the hydrogen evolution overpotentials in the acidic solution (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ) and alkaline solution (1 M KOH) are 78 mV and 80 mV, respectively. Compared with Ni 2 P-PECVD and NiCoP-CVD, the above values are significant lower. The chronopotential (CP) test showed that the material has good HER stability over 12 h. The ECSA test results show that both the Co doping and the PECVD method can help to increase the number of active sites of the material and improve its electrocatalytic activity. The above results are favorable for designing and developing low-cost, high-efficiency transition metal phosphorus catalysts.
