Morphology, mechanical and thermal properties of HNBR/AEM blends

Jiang Jian-Liang,Yang Xiao,Zhao Dongqi,Feng Ya-kai

Blending is an economical and feasible method to improve the properties of polymers. To improve the mechanical properties of ethylene acrylate rubber (AEM), a series of hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR)/AEM blends were prepared. The mechanical, thermal properties and compatibility of HNBR/AEM blends were investigated in detail. Carbon black filled HNBR/AEM blends exhibited excellent mechanical properties as well as good resistance to high and low temperature. The reactivity of HNBR was higher than that of AEM at a high temperature (180 °C) in air. The crosslinking reaction was more likely to occur in HNBR rubber, while it is not easy to remove small molecules at high temperature. The degradation temperature ( T d5% ) of AEM (350 °C) was lower than that of HNBR (390 °C), while the hot-air ageing tests indicate that the retention of tensile strength of AEM (95%) was much higher than that of HNBR (58%). HNBR/AEM blends were compatible within the full range of formulations, and have been mutually validated by SEM, dynamic mechanical analysis and mechanical property models of HNBR/AEM blends.

Fabrication and mechanical properties of γ-ray radiation vulcanized hnbr with high recovery after compression

Pei Dai,Anren Cheng,Xuena Zhao,Yang Jiao,Yongjun Lu,Liancai Wang,Xinmiao Zeng

This article focused on the effect of radiation vulcanization on the mechanical properties and the aging resistance performance in hot oil of the hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR). The effect of absorbed dose on micromorphology, mechanical properties and thermal stability of radiation vulcanized HNBR (RV-HNBR) was investigated. The fractured surface of the HNBR systems was inspected in scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM investigation showed that the cross-linked structure was more complete by the γ-ray radiation than heat vulcanization. A study of the compression permanent set property and tensile property of γ-ray radiation vulcanized HNBR was presented. Compared with heat vulcanized HNBR (HV-HNBR), RV-HNBR exhibited outstanding compression recovery performance after immersed in IRM 903 oil at 150 °C for 24 h. The compression-resilience property and the dimensional stability were improved with the absorbed dose increasing. When the absorbed dose was 250 kGy, the compression permanent was 40.1%. The good resistance to hot oil bring radiation vulcanized HNBR to meet many of the most stringent sealing application requirements.

Modification Study of High-Temperature Resistant Rubber Based on Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber (HNBR) / Polymide1212 (PA1212) Blend

Chenjun Zhang,Xi Zhang,Xiaodan Liu,Yiheng Li,Xiaoqi Wang,Xu Jin,Man Shen,Lanqiong Zhang

Specialty engineering rubber has been put forward with more stringent requirements. In this paper, the material properties and reinforcing effects of several fillers were investigated, and polyamide was selected as the target reinforcing material to modify hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) in order to improve the temperature resistance of the system. It was concluded that the mechanical properties of PA1212/HNBR system were better than those of PC/HNBR system at 120°C. The optimum PA1212 additive amount was determined through the mechanical property test and dispersion state observation of the blended system, which proved that the PA1212 reinforcing system significantly improved the heat resistance and mechanical properties of HNBR. The modified HNBR has excellent tensile strength and elasticity, which effectively improves the reliability and service life of the sealing equipment under high temperature conditions, and provides experimental references and theoretical basis for the research and development of high-temperature resistant rubber.

An Elastomeric Lithium-Conducting Interlayer for High-Performance LATP-Based Lithium Metal Batteries

Zhisong Geng,Yingqi Sun,Qing Zhang,Shao-Peng Shen,Liang Zhang,Jin-Chi Zheng,Yuan Luo,Yongzheng Shi,Zhe Chen

In response to the critical challenges of interfacial impedance and volumetric changes in Li (1+x) Al x Ti (2‑x) (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP)-based lithium metal batteries, an elastomeric lithium-conducting interlayer fabricates from fluorinated hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (F-HNBR) matrix is introduced herein. Owing to the vulcanization, vapor-phase fluorination, and plasticization processes, the lithium-conducting interlayer exhibits a high elasticity of 423%, exceptional fatigue resistance (10 000 compression cycles), superior ionic conductivity of 6.3 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , and favorable lithiophilicity, rendering it an ideal buffer layer. By integrating the F-HNBR interlayer, the LATP-based lithium symmetric cells demonstrate an extended cycle life of up to 1600 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and can also endure deep charge/discharge cycles (0.5 mAh cm −2 ) for the same duration. Furthermore, the corresponding lithium metal full cells achieve 500 cycles at 0.5 C with 98.3% capacity retention and enable a high-mass-loading cathode of 11.1 mg cm −2 to operate at room temperature.

Study on Aging Mechanism of HNBR Vulcanizate in High Temperature Oil and Water Environment

Junan Lu,Xuliang Zhang,Jianglin Chen,Tianguo Xia,Jin Tao,Haobo Yu

Rubber is a crucial sealing material in the petroleum industry. Due to increasingly stringent industrial development, safety performance requirements are becoming extremely high, resulting in higher oil resistance requirements for rubber. HNBR exhibits good heat resistance, high tensile strength, tear strength, and excellent wear resistance. However, a certain degree of aging will also occur in the actual service process, which will affect the service life of rubber. In order to explore the factors affecting the aging behavior of HNBR vulcanizates in an oil–water environment at 150 °C, HNBR vulcanizates were aged in an independent environment. IR (Infrared) spectroscopy analysis (FTIR), crosslinking density analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) testing were used to characterize the microstructural and morphological changes in HNBR vulcanizates before and after aging. The aging mechanism of HNBR vulcanizates in different environments was obtained. Since factors such as rubber fillers remained constant throughout the experimental process, the influence of formulation variables on aging was disregarded.

Hydrogenation of olefinic bonds in nitrile butadiene rubber on single-atom Pd1/CeO2−x catalysts with ultrahigh mass activity and stability

Jiaxin He,Zhi-Hao Zhao,JinJin Li,Zhipeng Ren,Ruyi Jiang,Jichao Zhang,Jian Zhang

As pivotal high-performance elastomers, hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) was commonly manufactured by selective hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR). Nevertheless, the high cost and poor stability of current noble metal-based catalysts seriously limit their large-scale applications. Herein, we report single-atom Pd supported by oxygen vacancies-rich CeO 2−x nanorods (Pd 1 /CeO 2−x ) as a novel catalyst for selectively hydrogenating the NBR. As a result of strong interaction between single-atom Pd and CeO 2−x support, the electrophilicity of Pd sites, and the nucleophilicity of olefinic bonds in NBR, the Pd 1 /CeO 2−x show a very high hydrogenated degree of 97.6 %, an unprecedentedly high Pd mass activity of 93.9 g NBR  g Pd −1 h −1 , and outstanding cycling stability, which considerably outperform those for previously reported catalysts. Therefore, this work will promote the low-cost manufacture of HNBR and the exploration of single-atom catalysts for selective hydrogenation.

Interfacial Curing Kinetics and Compatibilization Behavior of NR/HNBR/ENR Blends: Morphology, Viscoelasticity, and Network Structure

Yihao Fan,Qingyun Zhao,Mengyan Li,Xiaoxue Liao,Zhongjun Dai,Yanfang Zhao,Hongchi Tian,Rentong Yu

The development of high-performance elastomers that reconcile the conflicting requirements of cryogenic flexibility, oil resistance, and dynamic durability remains a formidable challenge. Here, we investigate interfacial compatibilization and vulcanization kinetics in natural rubber/hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (NR/HNBR) blends using epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) as a compatibilizer. We demonstrate that the vulcanization kinetics and properties of these immiscible constituents are governed not only by thermodynamic compatibility but, more critically, by the kinetically driven migration of curatives (sulfur and accelerators) across the phase boundaries. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) show that ENR refines the phase morphology and improves interfacial compatibility. Upon incorporating 8 phr ENR into an NR/HNBR (80/20) blend, the interfacial roughness (Rq) decreases from 379 to 282 nm, accompanied by a reduction in ΔTg from ∼49 °C to ∼42 °C. Rheological and kinetic analyses reveal a synergistic acceleration in binary NR/HNBR compounds, which is consistent with kinetically heterogeneous curing associated with curative redistribution during the early stages of vulcanization. In addition, ENR is inferred to influence curative partitioning at the NR/HNBR interphase and to attenuate kinetic heterogeneity, as suggested by the evolution of the Kamal-Sourour cure-rate profile from bimodal toward quasi-single-peak behavior.

Synthesis of Low Temperature Resistant Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber Based on Esterification Reaction

Lin Wang,Yanqiang Ni,Xin Qi,Liqun Zhang,Dongmei Yue

Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber (HNBR) is widely used in aerospace, petroleum exploration and other fields because of its excellent performances. However, there remains a challenge of balancing the oil resistance and the low temperature resistance for HNBR. In this work, a series of grafted carboxyl nitrile rubber (XNBR) was prepared by the esterification reaction between active functional groups (–COOH) of XNBR and alkanols of different molecular chain lengths (C8H17OH, C12H25OH, C16H33OH, C18H37OH) or Methoxypolyethylene glycols (MPEG) of different molecular weights (Mn = 350, 750, 1000). The structure and low temperature resistance of as-obtained grafted polymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR),1H-NMR and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of grafted XNBR were significantly decreased. MPEG grafted polymers with better low temperature resistance were then selected for hydrogenation. As-prepared hydrogenated XNBR grafted with MPEG-1000 (HXNBR-g-1000) showed the lowest Tgof −29.8 °C and the best low temperature resistance. This work provides a novel and simple preparation method for low temperature resistant HNBR, which might be used potentially in extremely cold environments. Keywords:hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR);grafting;low temperature resistance

Molecular Insights Into the Barrier and Reinforcement Mechanisms of HNBR/SWCNT Composites: A Combined Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

Ke Yang,Longjun Cheng,Hongxing Zhang,Chao Yu,Qionghai Chen,Qingli Cheng

To develop high-performance sealing materials for harsh high-temperature and high-pressure oil-gas environments in tank breather valves, this study incorporated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR). The systematic investigation of SWCNT content (0–2 phr) revealed that at a critical 2 phr loading, SWCNTs can significantly accelerate vulcanization (t90 reduced by 12.6%), enhancing crosslink density (17.7%) and modulus (141%), while reducing gas permeability by over 50% and suppressing oil-swelling (18%) and thermal-oxidative aging (99.4% tear strength retention). Molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the mechanism: strong interfacial interaction (~128 eV) restricts polymer chain motion (MSD reduced 36%), fundamentally inhibiting molecular diffusion (oil diffusion coefficient reduced > 60%). This work provides critical formulation and theoretical guidance for designing extreme-environment rubber seals. Highlights SWCNT enhances mechanical properties and reduces gas permeability of rubber. SWCNT suppresses oil swelling and aging for ensuring long-term seal stability. SWCNT-HNBR interactions restrict polymer-chain mobility and entanglements.
