HOF-21 nanofillers incorporated mixed matrix membranes for high-performance N2/CH4 separation

Jun Ma,Jiahe Zhang,Ye Yuan,Yunqi Zhou,Shenzhen Cong,Guangyu Xing,Jixiao Wang,Zhi Wang

N 2 /CH 4 separation membranes based on N 2 preferential permeation can effectively reduce the recompression cost of CH 4 gas and show promising application prospects in the field of natural gas purification. However, the performance of N 2 /CH 4 separation membranes still needs to be improved. Here, we report a kind of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for N 2 /CH 4 separation via using HOF-21 as nanofiller and 6FDA-DAM polyimide as polymer matrix . In this work, the effects of HOF-21 loading, feed side pressure and temperature based on membrane performance were explored, and finally performance variation of the MMMs with operation time was tested. The incorporated HOF-21 nanoparticles with the most probable pore size of about 3.6 Å can significantly increase the diffusion rate of smaller N 2 molecules and enhance the N 2 /CH 4 diffusivity selectivity of the membrane. In addition, compared with polyimide, HOF-21 exhibits almost the same dynamic adsorption of N 2 and CH 4 , which can weaken the solubility of CH 4 and enhance the N 2 /CH 4 solubility selectivity of the membrane. When feed gas pressure was 0.2 MPa, the optimum membrane performance was achieved at the HOF-21 loading of 7 wt%, with N 2 permeance of 5.13 GPU and N 2 /CH 4 (50/50, vol%) selectivity of 20.52 at 298.15 K. Compared with N 2 permeation and N 2 /CH 4 selectivity of the 6FDA-DAM/PAN membrane, the MMMs increased by 67% and 54%, respectively, possessing potential applications in the field of N 2 removal in CH 4 purification.

A current-responsive HOF-functionalized micropipette sensor for highly sensitive Cu2+ detection

Liying Huang,Shiwei Xu,Yueyue Feng,Guofeng Wang,Qian Shi,Min Zhang,Ying Liu,Nannan Liu

The fluctuation of copper ion (Cu 2+ ) content is closely related to the physiological state of the human body. Developing a facile and highly selective micropipette sensor to precisely monitor Cu 2+ content has become crucial for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of diseases. Herein, we propose a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-101)-functionalized micropipette sensor, which enables highly sensitive and real-time detection of copper ions based on an ionic current-voltage response. This micropipette sensor is capable of detecting Cu 2+ in human serum with a remarkably low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.11 μM, while offering a broad dynamic detection range of 10 –1 –10 4 μM. The adsorption mechanism was elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing the coordination effect and electrostatic interactions between Cu 2+ and the -COOH groups of HOF-101. This study not only fulfills the requirements of simple and sensitive detection of Cu 2+ , but also provides a new method for HOFs to detect ions in vivo.

Lability of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework (HOF) Crystals: A Deep Insight into the Structure–Stability Relationship

Jinyue Yang,Lina Zhou,Ting Wang,Na Wang,Xin Huang,Hongxun Hao

Ever since the inception of research on hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) materials, their poor framework stability has been a persistent challenge, which has severely hampered the application of HOFs. To date, the elaborate and deep association between the structure–stability relationship of HOFs is still not well understood. In this work, a novel HOF crystal THOF-1 featuring a hexagonal pore was constructed from N1, N3, N5-tris(pyridin-3-yl) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide. Compared with the reported HOF-8, which was built from N1, N3, and N5-tris(pyridin-4-yl) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide, THOF-1 exhibited weaker stability. Specifically, THOF-1 would transform to THOF-H2O with a tightly packed crystal structure in air or could directly collapse upon solvent removal from its pores. Motivated by the striking stability discrepancy between THOF-1 and HOF-8, a series of comparison studies including Hirshfeld surface analysis, supramolecular synthon analysis, IGMH analysis, crystal energy framework analysis, and MESP analysis were carried out to rationalize this phenomenon. This work aims to give a deep insight into the structure–property relationship of HOF crystals, thereby offering valuable guidance for the rational design and fabrication of stable HOF materials.

Efficient SERS substrate HOF@Au synergistically CHA-mediated double-end DNA walker as high-efficient signal amplification strategy to achieve ultra-sensitive detection of roxithromycin

Yi He,Xiaoyu Yang,Shunbi Xie,Runzi Zhang,Yao Liu,Mengjun Wang

Roxithromycin (ROX) is an effective antibiotic, but its prolonged administration may lead to hepatotoxicity and other side effects. To address this concern, the present study introduced a novel strategy that integrated a CHA-mediated dual-end DNA walker with hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) combined with Au nanoparticles (NPs) as efficient SERS substrates, enabling highly sensitive detection of ROX in food. Notably, HOF possessed a large specific surface area and strong adsorption properties that making it excellent platforms for the in-situ synthesis of abundant Au NPs and contributed to robust and uniform SERS signals. When ROX was present, it can trigger the activation of CHA and resulting the formation of a dual-end DNAzyme structure. Meanwhile, under the catalytic action of Mg 2+ , DNAzyme initiated the DNA walker mechanism and generated a substantial amount of Output DNA. Moreover, the Au@4-NTP@Ag core-shell structure generated numerous SERS “hot spots” and combined with the signal-amplifying capability of HOF@Au, leading to a remarkable improvement in SERS sensitivity. Based on this mechanism, the developed sensor employs a “signal-on” strategy for ultra-sensitive detection of ROX, achieving a detection range from 1.0 × 10 −6 to 1.0 × 10 −13  mol/L with a detection limit of 3.72 × 10 −14  mol/L. Furthermore, the method had been successfully applied to the detection of ROX in real food samples, including milk and honey, offering a promising and innovative framework for the development of next-generation SERS biosensors. This approach demonstrated significant potential for highly selective and sensitive antibiotic monitoring in food safety applications.

Self-powered molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical sensor based on Ppy/QD/HOF heterojunction for the detection of bisphenol A

Yukun Yang,Xiaoyi Zhang,Xiaomin Wang,Xu Jing,Ligang Yu,Baoqing Bai,Tao Bo,Jinhua Zhang,Hailong Qian,Ying Gu

As an emerging porous material, hydrogen-bonded organic framework materials (HOFs) still pose application challenges. In this work, the designed type “I + II” heterojunction extracted hot electrons from HOFs using quantum dots (QDs) and polypyrrole (Ppy), improving the stability and photoelectrochemical performance of materials. In addition to serving as a potential well, electropolymerized Ppy was used as a recognition element for bisphenol A (BPA), and a novel self-powered molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (MIP–PEC) sensor was designed. The sensing platform showed a linear relationship from 1 × 10 −10 to 1 × 10 −7 mol∙L −1 and from 1 × 10 −7 to 1 mol∙L −1 with an acceptable detection limit of 4.2 × 10 −11 mol∙L −1 . This is the first application of HOFs in constructing MIP–PEC sensors and a new attempt to improve the stability of HOFs for the application of porous crystal materials in the sensing field.

Sequential construction of HOF-on-HOF architectures via stepwise hemin immobilization toward enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Huijun Li,Wenjie Liu,Zhouqing Xu,Junjun Sun,Jianliang Cao,Yan Wang

A facile sequential crystallization strategy is developed to fabricate isostructural HOF-on-HOF architectures with periodic interfacial lattice contrast. • Spatially stepwise immobilization of hemin across core and shell regions extends visible-light harvesting and provides reversible Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox sites. • The optimized LPFC-1@hemin@NPFC-1@hemin catalyst achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 2345.1 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm), 1.84-fold higher than pristine LPFC-1. • The synergistic effect of interfacial charge regulation and hemin sensitization opens a new avenue for high-performance HOF-based photocatalyst design. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have emerged as promising photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production, yet their performance suffers from intrinsically poor visible-light absorption and sluggish photogenerated carrier transfer kinetics. To address these issues, we herein report a facile sequential crystallization strategy to construct isostructural HOF-on-HOF materials, wherein a periodic interfacial lattice contrast spontaneously forms at the core-shell boundary. Moreover, this kind of structure further enables stepwise immobilization of hemin molecules in both the core and shell domains via hydrogen bonding and π···π stacking interactions. Benefiting from the synergistic effects between periodic interfacial lattice contrast and hemin immobilization, the optimal LPFC-1@hemin@NPFC-1@hemin (large-sized pyrene-based hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, denoted as LPFC-1, nano-sized pyrene-based hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, denoted as NPFC-1) catalyst exhibits an exceptional photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 2345.1 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light irradiation (≥ 420 nm), which is 1.84 times higher than that of pristine LPFC-1. This work not only establishes a robust strategy to construct continuous HOF crystalline layers on preformed HOF crystals, but also presents an efficient route for stepwise hemin immobilization toward boosted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. A stepwise layered growth strategy constructs well-defined HOF-on-HOF materials and achieves spatial immobilization of hemin for superior photocatalytic hydrogen generation. A lanthanide-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework for real-time visual and ratiometric fluorescence monitoring of histamine in seafood

Yafei Chen,Huiying Mi,Haiyan Li,Jie Wen,Shangqing Zhang,Ronghuan He,Mingli Chen

The smart design of luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) as multi-functional optical sensors is of great significance for the development of advanced materials. In this context, we designed and synthesized a fluorescence probe (Eu-HOF/DPA) with the characteristics of dual emissions at 452 nm and 616 nm. The histamine introduction increased the system pH, enhancing the energy transfer efficiency from pH-sensitive antenna ligand DPA to Eu 3+ . This resulted in an intensified emission of Eu 3+ at 616 nm while the emission from ligand at 452 nm remained constant, enabling ratiometric fluorescence sensing and visual detection for histamine. Furthermore, a composite membrane was fabricated by embedding the probe onto a flexible substrate, which can be integrated with a smartphone for real-time monitoring the freshness of shrimp and crabs.

High-performance thin film composite nanofiltration membranes with HOF-21 interlayer

Jian Wang,Hang Xu,Ao Wang,Mingmei Ding,Tianlong Hu,Jingjun Wang,Yang Pan

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF) possess desirable properties such as intrinsic, modifiable, and uniform pore structures, making them highly promising materials for molecular separation. However, their application in membrane technology remains underexplored. This study successfully fabricated a novel interlayered thin-film nanocomposite (ITFN) membrane, using HOF material as the intermediate layer. The HOF-21 interlayer facilitated hydrogen bonding with piperazine, retarding amine monomer diffusion and resulting in a thinner, denser polyamide (PA) selective layer. The interconnected, uniformly sized pores of the HOF-21 nanoparticles yielded ultra-thin ITFN membranes with a highly ordered three-dimensional porous architecture. The study demonstrates that the new ITFN membranes are successfully prepared, and the PA layer of the membrane presents a wrinkled structure, and the cross-linking enhancement results in the improvement of the membrane performance. Consequently, the ITFN membrane demonstrates a high water flux (36.44 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ), coupled with a large Na 2 SO 4 rejection rate (97.06 %). The study establishes a foundation for advancing HOF membranes in liquid-phase molecular separation, thereby broadening the potential applicability of HOF materials across diverse domains.

Enzyme-HOF Hybrid Particles Composite Hydrogel Dressing for Diabetic Wound Healing

Zerong Hou,Chunyang Zhang,Haibo Wang,Fulin Huai,Dongzhi Yang,Lin Qiu,Jun Nie,Guiping Ma

Diabetic wounds (DWs) face challenges from persistent hyperglycemia, bacterial infection, and abnormal pH levels, which collectively impede healing. Traditional treatments, such as antibiotics and debridement, often show limitations such as drug resistance, pain, or high cost. To address this issue, a hybrid particle is developed based on in situ encapsulating glucose oxidase (GOx) in hydrogen-bonded organic framework HOF-101, enabling enzyme immobilization under mild conditions while preserving catalytic activity. The particle is formed through hydrogen bonding-triggered self-assembly and polydopamine coating and subsequently incorporated into a dual-network hydrogel matrix. The resulting composite hydrogel achieves efficient pH reduction and H 2 O 2 generation by consuming glucose, while exhibiting tunable photothermal responses under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, thus enabling local microenvironment modulation and synergistic antibacterial effects. In addition, the hydrogel demonstrates favorable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. These results suggest its great potential for application in DW healing.

Ultrarapid Electrosynthesis of HOF-102 Enables Multiscale Removal of Uremic Toxins

Qiqi Wang,Yang He,Xia Feng,Yiping Zhao,Li Chen

Current hemodialysis with chronic kidney disease (CKD) struggles with toxin removal efficiency and adsorbent biocompatibility. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer metal-free chemical stability, tunable pore size distribution, and abundant surface functional groups, making them promising candidates for miniature artificial kidney development and toxin removal applications. However, the efficient and scalable synthesis of HOFs has proven to be challenging. Here, we report that HOF-102 can be synthesized electrochemically within 60 min at room temperature, achieving a 95% yield on a gram scale. The resulting HOF-102 exhibits exceptional crystallinity and a high BET surface area (2431 m2 g–1), enabling efficient capture of toxin molecules across various size ranges. HOF-102 demonstrates superior adsorption capacities for urea, lysozyme, and bilirubin (137, 124, and 195 mg g–1, respectively) through complementary mechanisms: hydrogen bonding for small molecules, size-selective capture for proteins, and π–π stacking for aromatic toxins. More importantly, HOF-102 exhibits outstanding biocompatibility and high selectivity. This rapid, scalable synthesis and outstanding performance of HOF-102 meet crucial biocompatibility requirement for wearable artificial kidneys and personalized dialysis systems.

Self-assembling heterostructured MOF@HOF nanozyme for ultrasensitive α-amylase activity detection

Nana Li,Hao Shen,Mengdi Hao,Wanqiu Huang,Ying Han,Fan Yang,Shaoning Yu

α-Amylase not only has a wide range of applications in the food industry (especially baking, alcoholic beverage manufacturing and sugar production), but also serves as a core enzyme in the human digestive system, serving as an important parameter in the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases. Nevertheless, current methods still face challenges of numerous reagents, complex operation process, high cost and unsatisfactory sensitivity, restricting their utilization in on-field detection. Thus, the development of facile, low-cost, and sensitive strategies to monitor α-amylase activity is desperately required. Herein, we report the fabrication of a hybrid nanozyme through the in situ assembly of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) onto an amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF). The enhanced substrate channels and introduced affinity groups significantly improved the biocatalytic performance of the hybrid nanozyme NMOF@DHOF, leading to a strengthened colorimetric signal. Leveraging its high activity and stability, an ultrasensitive colorimetric platform was developed for the rapid detection of α-amylase activity. The assay platform utilized the interaction between α-amylase and starch-cross-linked NMOF@DHOF (NMOF@DHOF@Starch), where α-amylase hydrolyzed starch and led to the aggregation of nanoclusters, resulting in a weakening of the peroxidase activity. The proposed colorimetric strategy produced a linear response over a relevant range of α-amylase levels (1–30 U·L −1 ) with a low detection limit (0.68 U·L −1 ) and significant specificity. The platform's sensitivity and applicability were validated for α-amylase detection in complex matrices, including fermentation samples and human serum. This work establishes a novel biosensing platform design framework with significant potential to advance rapid analysis of α-amylase in both fermentation process monitoring and clinical disease diagnostics. Through facile replacement of particular crosslinking agents, the proposed platform is able to be utilized to quantify the activity of other types of enzymes, offering a beneficial guideline for the establishment of other enzyme analysis systems.
