N 2 /CH 4 separation membranes based on N 2 preferential permeation can effectively reduce the recompression cost of CH 4 gas and show promising application prospects in the field of natural gas purification. However, the performance of N 2 /CH 4 separation membranes still needs to be improved. Here, we report a kind of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for N 2 /CH 4 separation via using HOF-21 as nanofiller and 6FDA-DAM polyimide as polymer matrix . In this work, the effects of HOF-21 loading, feed side pressure and temperature based on membrane performance were explored, and finally performance variation of the MMMs with operation time was tested. The incorporated HOF-21 nanoparticles with the most probable pore size of about 3.6 Å can significantly increase the diffusion rate of smaller N 2 molecules and enhance the N 2 /CH 4 diffusivity selectivity of the membrane. In addition, compared with polyimide, HOF-21 exhibits almost the same dynamic adsorption of N 2 and CH 4 , which can weaken the solubility of CH 4 and enhance the N 2 /CH 4 solubility selectivity of the membrane. When feed gas pressure was 0.2 MPa, the optimum membrane performance was achieved at the HOF-21 loading of 7 wt%, with N 2 permeance of 5.13 GPU and N 2 /CH 4 (50/50, vol%) selectivity of 20.52 at 298.15 K. Compared with N 2 permeation and N 2 /CH 4 selectivity of the 6FDA-DAM/PAN membrane, the MMMs increased by 67% and 54%, respectively, possessing potential applications in the field of N 2 removal in CH 4 purification.

For the first time, the hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs)-based mixed-matrix membranes were designed for CO2 separation
A size-controllable method for synthesis of HOF-21 nanoparticles was proposed via diethylamine-modulated framework assembly process
The HOF-21 mixed-matrix membranes exhibited outstanding separation performance with PCO2 of ~ 800 Barrer, and SCO2/CH4 of ~ 40, SCO2/N2 of ~ 60, surpassing the 2008 Robosen upper bound.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF) possess desirable properties such as intrinsic, modifiable, and uniform pore structures, making them highly promising materials for molecular separation. However, their application in membrane technology remains underexplored. This study successfully fabricated a novel interlayered thin-film nanocomposite (ITFN) membrane, using HOF material as the intermediate layer. The HOF-21 interlayer facilitated hydrogen bonding with piperazine, retarding amine monomer diffusion and resulting in a thinner, denser polyamide (PA) selective layer. The interconnected, uniformly sized pores of the HOF-21 nanoparticles yielded ultra-thin ITFN membranes with a highly ordered three-dimensional porous architecture. The study demonstrates that the new ITFN membranes are successfully prepared, and the PA layer of the membrane presents a wrinkled structure, and the cross-linking enhancement results in the improvement of the membrane performance. Consequently, the ITFN membrane demonstrates a high water flux (36.44 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ), coupled with a large Na 2 SO 4 rejection rate (97.06 %). The study establishes a foundation for advancing HOF membranes in liquid-phase molecular separation, thereby broadening the potential applicability of HOF materials across diverse domains.

The development of ethanol dehydration membranes with superior separation performance and long-term stability is an essential objective for pervaporation. HOF-21 with pore size of 3.6 Å could make way for water transportation while rejecting ethanol molecules. Here, amine-modulated HOF-21 (HOF-21-a) was proposed to dope into the sodium alginate (SA) separation layer on the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate for ethanol dehydration. Molecular simulation results confirmed the superior water permeance of the HOF-21-a membrane. To enhance the interfacial bonding strength, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and catechol (CT) were coated onto the PAN substrate and crosslinked to form a robust network between the top separation layer and the support layer. The novel HOF-21-a@SA/M-PAN membrane, incorporating a hydrogen-bonded organic framework, was designed for efficient ethanol dehydration. Experimental results demonstrated that the prepared composite membrane exhibited excellent separation performance at a PEI/CT mass ratio of 1:1 and a HOF-21-a loading of 1.0 wt%. Specifically, the permeate flux increased significantly from 606 g·m −2 ·h −1 to 2389 g·m −2 ·h −1 with the separation factor improved from 153 to 2267 at 75 °C. Additionally, the composite membrane demonstrated outstanding long-term stability. The newly developed membrane offers a promising solution for organic solvent dehydration.

This work investigates the novel application of a metal-complex hydrogen-bonded framework HOF-21 as an intelligent, chloride-responsive material for superior corrosion protection. A cost-effective and streamlined synthesis of HOF-21 was developed using rapid stirring at ambient conditions, offering a practical alternative to conventional static interfacial method. When embedded in epoxy coatings on copper substrates, HOF-21 significantly enhances anti-corrosion performance, outperforming traditional materials like ZnAl-LDHs. The protection mechanism is tripartite: effective chloride ion capture, reinforcement of the coating’s mechanical properties, and active protection. Experimental analyses, including kinetic and isotherm model fitting, confirm the exceptional chloride adsorption capacity, best described by pseudo-second-order and Temkin models. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations elucidate the atomic-level mechanism, revealing that a unique hydrogen-bonded cage structure facilitates chloride sequestration. Furthermore, MD simulations demonstrate strong epoxy-HOF-21 compatibility and the formation of an interlocked structure that enhances mechanical cohesion. The active protection is attributed to the ion-exchange of fluorosilicate anions with chlorides. This work establishes M-HOFs as a versatile platform for chloride capture and provides a universal strategy for designing active-intelligent anticorrosion coatings.
